I’m going to be honest: I’ve had a hell of a time getting my head around React. More than any other technology I’ve touched over the last 10 years of my career, I just haven’t had it click for me. It’s very frustrating as I really want to learn it, and it’s clear the library has legs.

Brad Frost is the author of “development is design,” “atomic design,” and several other books, articles, and tweets that have helped illuminate my path to becoming a design engineer. He and many other design focused front-end developers I know describe feelings of being behind by the framework train.

Frost’s article in particular begs some questions such as, how repeatable is the design engineering career path if one of its shining stars struggles to keep up with the engineering?; how much can developer ergonomics be improved so that people can spend more time learning JavaScript and universal engineering principles and less time with build tooling, state containers, and proprietary markup syntax?; and finally, is it sufficient for anyone to just know HTML, CSS, and a little bit of jQuery on top anymore?
