Tail Or No Tail, This Tigress Is Thriving | WBUR's The Wild Life
"This means a second litter in wild for Zolushka, the pioneering tigress, who was rescued in 2012 as an orphan, rehabilitated, returned to the wild (minus a length of a frostbitten tail), and, in 2015, became the first rehabbed Amur tiger to give birth in the wild." I actually teared up when I read this, because it's amazing enough that this tigress was saved as a cub from sure death, but that she could actually be released back into the wild and give birth to two litters in the wild? In an area of Russia where tigers had been extirpated? :)

5 Reasons to Not Visit National Parks During a Government Shutdown | Resource Travel
Keeping National Parks open during this Fed’l shutdown is wildly irresponsible. We’ve never done it because there’s too much at stake. I say this as a citizen who 1) couldn’t get into Ft Funston to walk my dogs during the ‘95 shutdown and 2) had my bags packed at the Grand Canyon in ‘16 when they threatened a shutdown. I know it’s inconvenient.. but it’s justifiable. I follow over a dozen NPs on FB and tonight every single one of them is posting whatever blurb the Dept of Interior wrote to let people know that parks may be open but there are NO NPS services available. The linked article makes a good case for just staying out of them until the shutdown ends. I’ve seen for myself what foolish visitors can do, from approaching wild bison or elk (and then getting injured) to running into trouble on a trail and needing to be rescued (yea, that was me once!) to trashing campgrounds and trails. Tragedy of the Commons and all. If you do go, be part of the solution. Document vandalism. Pack out other people’s garbage and your own. Help protect our resources, heritage & wildlife, if you must make that trip. I know some local folks plan to be guardians at RMNP this week... just be guardians, not vigilantes, and stay safe out there!

"According to recent research by biologists at the University of California–Santa Cruz, mountain lions fear humans as much as we fear them—and our presence in their habitat can seriously affect their feeding behavior, increasing how much prey they kill." /random Sidenote: when I toured UCSC for grad school, we had to delay our meeting because there was a wild mountain lion who wandered into the PoliSci bldg early that morning and wouldn't leave. skerred kitty.

We Can Conserve Elephants Without Hunting Them
Dan Ashe, president of the AZA, released a statement today on elephant trophy hunting that is worth a read. My take on reading his words: The Endangered Species Act allows for conservation hunting of endangered species (except not species endangered in the US!), so it's time to get that Act revised such that it does not allow for conservation hunting of any species listed as endangered or threatened, period, which would end the import of trophies from Africa to this country, period, full stop. Do read the whole thing for yourself. He closes with: "Sixty-two AZA member zoos care for elephants. They work, tirelessly, giving exceptional and respectful care for these magnificent animals, and providing millions of visitors the opportunity to encounter them, each year. Across our entire membership, more than 200 million visitors will see elephants, and other animals, in the coming year, including giant panda, penguin, manta ray, Komodo dragon, dolphin, gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutan, which we are helping to save from extinction, without trophy hunting. The argument that we need to hunt endangered animals, like elephants, to conserve them, is old and tired. If you haven’t been lately, visit one of these great zoos or aquariums. Spend some time with elephants and other endangered animals, and draw your own conclusions."

A Straussian national security strategy - The Washington Post
I've been following Prof Drezner for well over a decade and this is an intriguing opinion piece he's written for the WaPo today. But I think his argument is a stretch. W's foreign policy was Straussian. All the people he had around him advising him on foreign policy were Straussian. We went into Iraq to satisfy the neoconservative (Straussian) urge for regime change (I almost just went off on a deficit tangent but next time, maybe). I also doubt that trump has Straussian ideologues surrounding him. I think this is just an inchoate stab at piecing together ideas from stump speeches: all sound and fury, signifying nothing. If anything, this 'policy' is something derived from Derrida. "To pretend, I actually do the thing: I have therefore only pretended to pretend."

Best map I've seen of the Thomas Fire yet (frequently updated). Impressed that the SB Zoo got a few animals (Condors among them) down to the LA Zoo yesterday, because the thing about Santa Barbara is that the 101 is your only way south, through Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. And that was all a mess yesterday.

Giving Thanks Day 5 I am so grateful for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I have mountains of good memories and 1000s of photos. I’m grateful that zoos today are not the zoo’s of my childhood- AZA accreditation means adhering to the strictest of care standards. I’m grateful for our zoo’s conservation projects which help animals in the wild. I’m grateful for the educational and preservation opportunities. And especially, I am thankful for the recreation! And friends- both human and animal. It’s America’s only mountain zoo, has the friendliest staff and you know, some special beasties.

Giving Thanks - Day 1 From now until Sunday, I'm going to post about stuff I'm grateful to have in my life. So, we begin with.... mom! Margaret Stoddard turned 95 this month, for which I am most grateful. I'm super grateful for her intelligence and style, for all the fun trips she went out of her way for us to take, come hell or high water, and that she instilled a love of lifelong learning in me. She grew up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression, enlisted in the Navy during WWII, and jetted out to California in the late 60s to work on defense contracts with ITT and then the DOD. She put herself through college while raising me as a single mom. My fondest memories of growing up were all the trips to the beaches of SoCal, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, museums, all the zoos and lots of long car trips that were never dull (and always Baskin Robbins on the way home). I admire her persistence... and am grateful to and for her.

Conserve elephants. They hold a scientific mirror up to humans - In praise of pachyderms
"Dr Wittemyer argues that, human beings aside, no species on Earth has a more complex society than that of elephants. And elephant society does indeed have parallels with the way humans lived before the invention of agriculture." (I know, from the Economist, no less, not exactly a left wing propaganda rag)

Is Trophy Hunting Helping Save African Elephants?
The Dept of Fish & Wildlife has released a Q&A pdf (that in turn links the the full report) on why they are reversing the ban on imported elephant parts (um, severed heads) in Zimbabwe, a politically unstable country ruled by the despot Mugabe for decades who just today was removed in a coup (or quasi-coup) by the army (who can't be trusted either) and who knows what happens next. I just read both PDFs and they laid out their argument very well that trophy hunting can enhance conservation through well managed programs, but I am still thinking 3 things: 1) it is not probable that Zimbabwe has well managed programs of any kind given the corruption and instability, 2) These are elephants! A highly social, intelligent animal that lives in ~family~ groups and who are a keystone species! In fact, I could barely get through two paragraphs before I started thinking of the elephants I have come to know, seeing their faces and hearing their purring sounds... or the wild elephants I saw on foot in South African many years ago, 3) How did it come to happen that the SCI (Safari Club Intl), a trophy hunting organization who has donated $ to Zinke (head of Dept of Interior, who runs the FWS), issued the press release on this policy reversal before the FWS did? You can read the FWS Q&A here: http://ift.tt/1WxbWZF and click the linked article for a rebuttal:

Trump to allow imports of African elephant trophies | TheHill
This is the last thing that needs to happen if we care about conserving elephant populations in the wild. What a disappointment. It even contradicts what FWS has on their website at this moment. I expect them to change this page soon, given the reversal of policy that happened today - http://ift.tt/2rVdWO0 There is _no_valid science that backs the claim that hunting helps preserve this species - the facts are that elephant numbers in Zimbabwe (one of the countries where the ban is now lifted) are down & that hunters tend to take the healthiest stock (think survival of the... weakest? how is that good for the gene pool).

Wow, I so remember this day from 3 years ago. I was up at the zoo with a ton of fresh snow and I was like one of 3 guests in the park that day. I was the only one at the Hippo happening. Anthony the keeper said to me, ‘Hey I’ve seen you here before, want to feed the hippos?’ That was my first defining moment and it worked to hook me on our zoo. 😉 I popped a cabbage in each girly hippo mouth with a few odds and ends of scraps.
