Giving Thanks Day 5 I am so grateful for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I have mountains of good memories and 1000s of photos. I’m grateful that zoos today are not the zoo’s of my childhood- AZA accreditation means adhering to the strictest of care standards. I’m grateful for our zoo’s conservation projects which help animals in the wild. I’m grateful for the educational and preservation opportunities. And especially, I am thankful for the recreation! And friends- both human and animal. It’s America’s only mountain zoo, has the friendliest staff and you know, some special beasties.

Giving Thanks Day 4: Get Outside! I’m so grateful for the National and State Park systems, to be able to take in all the great glory of the natural, cultural and historic sites. The Western US just has acres of unspoiled lands- to lose or find yourself in. And I’m so damn grateful to have been able to visit so many of these places.... and to see the photos my friends bring back from them too.

Giving Thanks Day 3 My phone made this movie for me, it stars Hawkeye, my feline companion, and Abby, whom I still miss very much. I’m so grateful for all the animal friends I’ve had in my life: Buckwheat and Spearmint the cats, Schnitzel the doxxie, all the Salukis, the horses Mico and Shawna, Cheyenne my good dog, Quoyley (and Jake), & Abby my bestest dog. It’s so special to have those bonds. I’m grateful for the fine dogs I’ve had the pleasure of sitting, too. 🐶

Giving Thanks - Day 1 From now until Sunday, I'm going to post about stuff I'm grateful to have in my life. So, we begin with.... mom! Margaret Stoddard turned 95 this month, for which I am most grateful. I'm super grateful for her intelligence and style, for all the fun trips she went out of her way for us to take, come hell or high water, and that she instilled a love of lifelong learning in me. She grew up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression, enlisted in the Navy during WWII, and jetted out to California in the late 60s to work on defense contracts with ITT and then the DOD. She put herself through college while raising me as a single mom. My fondest memories of growing up were all the trips to the beaches of SoCal, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, museums, all the zoos and lots of long car trips that were never dull (and always Baskin Robbins on the way home). I admire her persistence... and am grateful to and for her.

Conserve elephants. They hold a scientific mirror up to humans - In praise of pachyderms
"Dr Wittemyer argues that, human beings aside, no species on Earth has a more complex society than that of elephants. And elephant society does indeed have parallels with the way humans lived before the invention of agriculture." (I know, from the Economist, no less, not exactly a left wing propaganda rag)

Is Trophy Hunting Helping Save African Elephants?
The Dept of Fish & Wildlife has released a Q&A pdf (that in turn links the the full report) on why they are reversing the ban on imported elephant parts (um, severed heads) in Zimbabwe, a politically unstable country ruled by the despot Mugabe for decades who just today was removed in a coup (or quasi-coup) by the army (who can't be trusted either) and who knows what happens next. I just read both PDFs and they laid out their argument very well that trophy hunting can enhance conservation through well managed programs, but I am still thinking 3 things: 1) it is not probable that Zimbabwe has well managed programs of any kind given the corruption and instability, 2) These are elephants! A highly social, intelligent animal that lives in ~family~ groups and who are a keystone species! In fact, I could barely get through two paragraphs before I started thinking of the elephants I have come to know, seeing their faces and hearing their purring sounds... or the wild elephants I saw on foot in South African many years ago, 3) How did it come to happen that the SCI (Safari Club Intl), a trophy hunting organization who has donated $ to Zinke (head of Dept of Interior, who runs the FWS), issued the press release on this policy reversal before the FWS did? You can read the FWS Q&A here: http://ift.tt/1WxbWZF and click the linked article for a rebuttal:

Trump to allow imports of African elephant trophies | TheHill
This is the last thing that needs to happen if we care about conserving elephant populations in the wild. What a disappointment. It even contradicts what FWS has on their website at this moment. I expect them to change this page soon, given the reversal of policy that happened today - http://ift.tt/2rVdWO0 There is _no_valid science that backs the claim that hunting helps preserve this species - the facts are that elephant numbers in Zimbabwe (one of the countries where the ban is now lifted) are down & that hunters tend to take the healthiest stock (think survival of the... weakest? how is that good for the gene pool).

Wow, I so remember this day from 3 years ago. I was up at the zoo with a ton of fresh snow and I was like one of 3 guests in the park that day. I was the only one at the Hippo happening. Anthony the keeper said to me, ‘Hey I’ve seen you here before, want to feed the hippos?’ That was my first defining moment and it worked to hook me on our zoo. 😉 I popped a cabbage in each girly hippo mouth with a few odds and ends of scraps.

Chris Hurst upsets Del. Joseph Yost in New River Valley race | Politics | roanoke.com
Chris's girlfriend was fatally shot on live TV (news anchor Alison Parker - 2015)... and he ran on an anti-gun violence campaign against NRA backed Yost. It also looks as though the VA House of Delegates will turn blue tonight, a feat no one, absolutely no one, saw coming. I'll chalk that up to a good effort to GOTV on down ballot races.. something to bear in mind for 2018.

Wind Cave bison to roam in distant prairie | News | rapidcityjournal.com
I got to see some of the Bison herd at Wind Cave while I was there last month and this is a good story about their herd management. This herd contains pure Bison DNA - not diluted with cattle - and this herd at Wind Cave was reintroduced into the park from stock obtained from the Bronx Zoo in the 1910s. Now some from this herd are being sent to other conservation areas to re-populate other areas. Bison were all but wiped out in the early 20th Century. That we have managed to restore Bison to wild areas is one of the most striking examples of the role that zoos can play in conservation of threatened animals. Our zoo participates in the Black Footed Ferret breeding and re-introduction program and many of our ferrets have gone on to be reintroduced to Wind Cave and other areas in South Dakota. Yay.

National Park Service - PEPC - National Park Service Proposes Targeted Fee Increases at Parks to Address Maintenance Backlog
A proposal to raise the entrance fees to $70 during peak season for 17 National Parks is on the table (this more than doubled many of the existing fees for these parks). National Parks are for the benefit of all Americans, not just those with high disposal incomes. The maintenance backlog could be better handled in the Federal budget, not through entrance fees. The proposal arrives at a time when this administration wants to cut the National Park Service budget by roughly $400 million and its staff by about 1,200. The NPS is opening a comment period and that link is below. Add your voice if you like. There have been times in my life that a day trip to Yosemite or Rocky Mountain would have been unthinkable at $70. Sure, it’s good for a week, but some of these parks are close to big cities and people only stay a day anyway. I buy an annual parks pass for $80/year - & they don’t plan to change that yet - that pass is always a bargain. Honestly, given the popularity of these particular parks and that it’s only going up in peak season, I wonder if it’s supposed to deter visitation? Here are the 17 parks affected: Acadia, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Denali, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Joshua Tree, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Shenandoah, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion.
