I am sorry to see The Awl closing shop. They were a fine web magazine. So many fine, brave, independent websites have arisen over the years, calling our attention to new ideas and new voices, enriching the web and our lives. So few have survived. Thank you for your service.

How Big Is That Box? Understanding Sizing In CSS Layout — Smashing Magazine
“A key feature of Flexbox and Grid Layout is that they can deal with distributing available space between, around and inside grid and flex items. Quite often this just works, and we get the result we were hoping for without trying very hard. ... Sometimes, however, you might wonder why something ends up the size that it is. Or, you might want to do something different to the default behavior. To do so, you need to know something of how the underlying algorithms figure out how to distribute space.”

Has #MeToo gone too far, or not far enough? The answer is both | Laura Kipnis | Opinion | The Guardian
“To the extent that women’s bodies are still treated as public property by men, whether that means groping us or deciding what we can do with our uteruses, women do not have civic equality. To miss that point is to miss the political importance and the political lineage of #MeToo: the latest step in a centuries long political struggle for women to simply control our own bodies.”

New studies show we may be able to tell how a person feels better by hearing them than seeing them - The Washington Post
A new study by Michael Kraus of the Yale University School of Management has found that our sense of hearing may be even stronger than our sight when it comes to accurately detecting emotion. Kraus found that we are more accurate when we hear someone’s voice than when we look only at their facial expressions, or see their face and hear their voice. In other words, you may be able to sense someone’s emotional state even better over the phone than in person.

New York’s Attorney General in Battle With Trump - The New York Times
By moving to sue the Federal Communications Commission over net neutrality this month, his office took its 100th legal or administrative action against the Trump administration and congressional Republicans. His lawyers have challenged Mr. Trump’s first, second and third travel bans and sued over such diverse matters as a rollback in birth control coverage and a weakening of pollution standards. “We try and protect New Yorkers from those who would do them harm,” Mr. Schneiderman said during a recent interview in his Manhattan office. “The biggest threat to New Yorkers right now is the federal government, so we’re responding to it.”

The key to successfully working remotely: stop trying to find out if your colleagues are “available” or not. “Truth is, there are hardly any good reasons to know if someone’s available or away at any given moment. If you truly need something from someone, ask them. If they respond, then you have what you needed. If they don’t, it’s not because they’re ignoring you — it’s because they’re busy. Respect that! Assume people are focused on their own work.”

A11y Rules Podcast Episode 21 - Interview with Jeffrey Zeldman - Part 1 | Nicolas Steenhout on Patreon
A11y Rules Podcast Episode 21 - Interview with Jeffrey Zeldman - Part 1 Nic: Hey, Jeffrey, we're talking about web accessibility this morning. There's about two billion different definitions of the word. How would you define it? Jeffrey: Right. I would go back to web standards principles like progressive enhancement which say, the web is genius because it allows everyone access to content and to interactivity. And I would say that an accessible site is one that allows anyone, regardless of native physical ability, regardless of temporary physical ability, regardless of device used, or browser, or phone used, to access content. Doesn't mean they have an identical experience. Obviously someone who can't hear isn't going to hear, someone who can't see isn't going to see. Someone using a really old browser may have a simplified layout. But everyone can get to the content, everyone can do what the website promises to let them do. Because basically we've had interactivity since HTML1. Right?
