CSS Flexbox Is Entirely Logical (Almost) / Paul Robert Lloyd
Vertical centering? Easy. Equal height columns? By default. While Flexbox may not be suitable for every situation, it solves a great number. And with CSS Grids just around the corner, web layout nirvana feels pretty damn close.

Why mobile first is outdated — Inside Intercom — Medium
Whoa. “Mobile first,” contrary to this author’s view, was never about the device, always about content and experience. And design—including mobile-first design—is always about the job the customer is doing, never about the device she is using. Despite those major reservations, there’s some good stuff in this piece. (You just have to wade through the bad parts to get to it.)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation wants the ability to break into smartphones and computers for investigations. The Pentagon and intelligence officials worry that the same techniques could be used by foreign powers or hackers to drain data from phones used by the United States government, and that countries like China will demand the same access provided to American law enforcement officials. ... A law “written in an atmosphere of anger or grief,” he said, is “not likely to be the right answer.” Later he drove home the point, saying “it would be better to work this out rather than have a law written.” And throughout his talk, Mr. Carter made it clear that he is more interested in securing data than prying into it.

Here Are the Fastest Growing Social Networks You Need to Join
Fascinating analysis of the rise and fall of various social media—who uses which, and why. Two of the best tools that reveal the Internet popularity of anything at all [are] Google Trends and Google Adword tools. An example I often provide of this is how the Google Trends chart provides a perfect timeline of the rise and fall of MySpace. This textbook “life-cycle” chart is an important chart to keep in mind as we analyze the trends of today’s most popular social networks and social IM tools. Let’s see where today’s social networks are in their own “life-cycle.”
