A Mentor is Nice. A Sponsor is Better, but Don’t Forget about Your Tribe
Even with this wonderful experience, both as a CEO and a lawyer, sponsorship and mentorship have often eluded me. I don’t know if it is because of my gender or the color of my skin, but I have not allowed this to determine my success. Instead, I have allowed it to fuel me. These circumstances have ultimately created a situation where I have had to rely on what many people referred to as their tribe.

Your tribe is the people that you went to school with, that work side-by-side with you, or the people that have/and or are currently facing the same challenges professionally as you. Often times they are not senior to you and you won’t be having closed-door meetings with them. But what you can count on them for, is to give you brutally honest advice, and meet with you on a moment’s notice.

Who Designed The Costumes For JAY-Z's "Family Feud?" Ayanna James Is Behind Your Fave 'Insecure' Looks
The Jamaican-born designer who grew up in South Florida got her start in the industry as most do, assisting on small shoots in Los Angeles and blogging about fashion in her spare time. James then moved her way up the ranks by styling celebs like Usher, Carmelo Anthony, and Issa Rae herself. And it's that connection with Rae that gave her a life-changing opportunity.

The Year I Decided That My Voice Mattered
That changed this year. 2015 was the year that I decided that I was worth listening to. That I could be so bold as to think that someone would want to read what I wrote, that someone would care about my take. If I thought someone was worth a 1,800 word profile, I would trust that instinct and go for it. I would stop questioning myself. I would take up all the space (and try to stop apologizing for doing s0).

Men Just Don’t Trust Women. And This Is A Problem
But you know what I don’t really trust? What I’ve never actually trusted with any women I’ve been with? Her feelings.

So how do we remedy this? And can it even be remedied? I don’t know. This distrust of women’s feelings is so ingrained, so commonplace that I’m not even sure we (men) realize it exists. I can do one thing, though. The next time my wife tells me how upset she is about something I’m not sure she should be that upset about, trust her.

Kelly Diels - I usually work with leaders and creatives who are women or gender non-conforming and who might also have other marginalized identities.
And pretty much all of us struggle with a fear of public visibility.

People like Milo Yiannopoulos and his mob grow their influence not by creating something of value or contributing their talents, but by targeting us for harassment, doxxing, threats, and public humiliation.

Why I'm Skipping The Women's March on Washington [OPINION]
On one hand, I think of Tamika Mallory (former executive director of National Action Network), Carmen Perez (executive director The Gathering for Justice), and Linda Sarsour (executive director of the Arab American Association of New York) as living and breathing superheroes. They are the closest our shared home of New York City has to Wonder Woman, Storm and Misty Knight.

The tragedy of small expectations (and the trap of false dreams)
Expectations are not guarantees. Positive thinking doesn't guarantee results, all it offers is something better than negative thinking. | It's easy to manipulate the language of expectations and turn it into a bootstrapping, you're-on-your-own sort of abandonment. But expectation is contagious. Expectation comes from our culture. And most of all, expectation depends on support—persistent, generous support to create a place where leaping can occur. There are limits all around us, stereotypes, unlevel playing fields, systemic challenges where there should be support instead. A quiet but intensely corrosive impact these injustices create is in the minds of the disenfranchised, in their perception of what is possible.

If we can help just one person refuse to accept false limits, we've made a contribution. If we can give people the education, the tools and the access they need to reach their goals, we've made a difference. And if we can help erase the systemic stories, traditions and policies that push entire groups of people to insist on less, we've changed the world.
