A novel approach to onboarding
Find ways for users to take control and discover your USP/Aha moment naturally.

We took all of these features out. Every single one of them. And by doing so, we created a bog standard email client. It did everything a regular email client did, and nothing else. It worked exactly as users expected it to — so we didn’t need our complicated on-boarding anymore. But that’s not exactly a compelling proposition.

When I say we took them out, I’m only telling half the story. We took them out of the UI, but we put them somewhere else. We created a ‘Skills Center’. You accessed it via a button that we highlight early in the user journey. It looks like this:

Calling attention to the Skills Center

It is the only thing that stands out from an otherwise familiar UI. Now, when a user played with Hiri for two minutes and realised that there’s nothing new or different, inevitably they clicked on the one thing that was. And when they do — we have them.

In the Skills Center, you can add the features that make Hiri unique. In your own time, you can explore these features and turn them on.

Interview: Mo’Nique on Netflix, Oprah, Whoopi, Tyler Perry
When you have a woman saying, “I could have schooled you,” someone would say, “What was the schooling going to be?” When I look at this woman you say is our icon and our legend — she is. But, how many things has Whoopi Goldberg executive produced? Whoopi Goldberg has always been the help, and I say that humbly. So what is it that you’re going to school me on? I’ve been doing it for almost 30 years.

Steven Yeun Is Lighting Up the Screen
The thing that worked me, and helped me understand what was going on in my own body, was just I have to stop depending on others to confirm my worth. I'm here. I exist. And I don't need someone else to validate that for me. It's really on me. It's my choice whether I continue to thrive or not. That's really the mission statement: How do you get better every day and take a second to listen?

Kindness breeds safety and safety breeds confidence.

My favorite verse is Romans 12:2 and he says, "Do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test God's good and perfect will.”

I remember being taught that in youth group as: “Only do Christian things, don't do secular things, and then you will be fine.” But that couldn't be further from what that text actually says. That's such a bummer to me that that's how I was brought up. But it's cool to find it now, to realize that it's all just about, don't conform. Just do the thing that you were put on this earth to do.

Sandra Oh on Her Historic Emmy Nomination for ‘Killing Eve’ - The New York Times
You want to know what? Let’s celebrate it, man. I’m serious, just [expletive] celebrate it. It’s like, we’ve got to start somewhere, we’ve got to start somewhere. And I’m happy to get that ball rolling.

But I am absolutely aware of the significance and take it very seriously because we need it. Not only just for my community — and hopefully what that means to be represented and seen — but also for culture. We’re a part of it. Let us not only see ourselves, but let others see us.

Do Not Ask Miss Tammye From 'Queer Eye' To Pick A Favorite Fab 5 Member
What advice do you give to those people who are struggling with acceptance?

The main thing is to love your child. When God gave me the revelation not to judge and just to love, I tell them there is more to your child ― and everybody ― than what they do in the bedroom. Your child is someone you would die for. That relationship right there mirrors God’s love more than anything.

How to craft perfect answers to any interview question - I Will Teach You To Be Rich
Storytelling is the secret to interviewing.

Q1 (can you tell me about your work history): Rather than walking the hiring manager through your resume chronologically, you’re highlighting the key strengths of your background and creating a story, showing growth.

Q2 (what's your biggest weakness): You want to show a transformation or journey here. The whole point of even telling them something negative about yourself is to spin it into a positive. You do this by either showing them that you’ve learned something really valuable from this negative trait or that this negative thing has helped you grow in some way.

Q3 (have you ever faced a challenge when working with a coworker): show what you learned in the process.

America Ferrera on Superstore, Trump, and Latino Stories
I definitely know what you’re saying in terms of Amy being less of a go-getter and world changer and force, and that is part of what intrigued me about the character. I don’t think, however, that she’s any less comfortable in herself and her choices. There is a real beauty and strength to someone who, like Amy, has decided what’s valuable to her in her life. We tend to think of ambition as something that makes you a good person in our society. But we don’t often think of people who are quietly living their lives and their values and their priorities as strong and valuable and okay.

Beyonce ELLE Magazine Cover Story
I'm just exhausted by labels and tired of being boxed in. If you believe in equal rights, the same way society allows a man to express his darkness, to express his pain, to express his sexuality, to express his opinion—I feel that women have the same rights. // Some of the things that we teach our daughters—allowing them to express their emotions, their pain and vulnerability—we need to allow and support our men and boys to do as well. // If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me.

Tracy Clayton
“Go first.”

When I was in high school, if I had a presentation or a report to give, I was so terrified—I was a huge introvert, and public speaking made me want to die. My mother said to me, “Go first and just get it over with so you can relax—the worst thing is having to sit and wait to have to do something that scares you.”

From that day on, whenever I had a report to give, I volunteered to go first, as shy and terrified as I was, and it has now become a habit. When I have something tough and uncomfortable to do, I do my best to push through it quickly, keeping my eyes trained on the moment that I cross the finish line, which makes it all worth it.

Molly Crabapple Book Art
Travel for him would have been impossible except to Lebanon, whereas I could show up anywhere. I was talking to him and he said, "You can just fly to Istanbul and buy a $20 visa at the airport and they smile and say 'Welcome to my country'?" He was shocked by it. That's something I always think about, this massive freedom of movement we have in rich countries that we completely take for granted.

Genius: A Conversation With ‘Hamilton’ Maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda
I had the idea for Hamilton when I was still in In the Heights. So, again, impossible to overstate: The success of In the Heights gave me a life as a writer, a career as a writer, it said, “You belong here.” Nothing will ever do for me what that show did — from broke to not broke — in every respect.

Bryant Gumbel: ESPN, CBS Gave ‘Big Wet Kiss’ to NFL
Here’s how much of a radical I am: If we had a situation where the athletes in the non-revenue producing sports—tennis, volleyball, track and field, rowing, baseball—if those athletes were predominantly black, and the athletes in the revenue-producing sports, basketball and football, were predominantly white, this issue would have gone away long ago. There’s no way people would have stood for it. It would not be an issue. But the reality is nobody but nobody in this country cares about young black men. They don’t. They don’t give a shit. They just don’t care.

Rowan Blanchard on Why ‘Squad Goals’ Are Exclusive & Polarizing (JJJ Interview) | Exclusive, Girl Meets World, Interview, Rowan Blanchard | Just Jared Jr.
“Of course female friendship is a beautiful thing. It’s insanely powerful,” Rowan told JJJ. “Sisterhood is something so valid and important when you are growing up that I literally think the essence of it should be taught in schools. But, the ‘squads’ we see in the media are very polarizing. Feminism and friendship are supposed to be inclusive, and most of these ‘squads’ are strictly exclusive.” She continued, “It makes feminism look very one dimensional. Feminism is so multilayered and complex that it can be frustrating when the media and the celebrities involved in it make feminism and “squads” feel like this very happy, exclusive, perfect thing. There’s so much more than that. ‘Squad goals’ can polarize anyone who is not white, thin, tall and always happy. ”

Jeanette Winterson meets Marlon James: ‘You can’t keep upgrading people like you do with your phone’
MJ What I find, particularly with young writers and readers, is that they don’t want complicated feelings. JW But they’re young. And I feel sympathy with that. I’m happy to not know what I think about stuff; I’m happy to change my mind. But it’s relatively recently that I’ve been able to apply that to feelings. I used to like to know what I felt. I didn’t want those feelings to be complicated or muddled or clashing.
