New Aesthetic: Time Travel Test Using my own photos from Instagram, I plotted the Lat and Longitude of each photo, taking me from London, to Liverpool, to the Scottish Border, and then Edinburgh. After looking further into the Lat and Long and how the co-ordinates were made up, I discovered time played an important part in the set up of the co-ordinates. This allowed me to then "time travel" backwards three days, to Canada, were my photos were took. All info is true, the photos WOULD have been taken there, three days before. Spooky stuff. Stories from the New Aesthetic: James Bridle Stories from the New Aesthetic took place at The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City on October 11, 2012. The New Aesthetic is an ongoing research project by James Bridle, investigating the intersections of culture and technology, history and memory, and the physical and the digital. For this event, Bridle will be joined by Aaron Straup Cope and Joanne McNeil to discuss stories related to these ideas. James Bridle is a writer, publisher, and technologist. He writes a regular column for the Observer (UK) and his writing has also appeared in Wired, Domus, Icon, and widely online. He speaks worldwide on the intersections of literature, technology, and culture, and writes about what he does at booktwo.org. Aaron Straup Cope is currently Senior Engineer at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Before that, he was Senior Engineer at Flickr focusing on all things geo-, machinetag-, and galleries-related between 2004 and 2009. From 2009 to 2011, he was Design Technologist and Director of Inappropriate Project Names at Stamen Design, where he created the prettymaps project. Joanne McNeil is the editor of Rhizome. She is a 2012 USC Annenberg-Getty Arts Journalism Fellow. Her writing has appeared in Modern Painters, Wired (UK), the Los Angeles Times, and other web and print publications. Organized by Rhizome, the New Silent Series receives major support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support is provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts. Rhizome

EXISTENCE A TIMELAPSE PROJECT on Vimeo
august 2012 by warrenellis
EXISTENCE A TIMELAPSE PROJECT It’s been almost a year since I started my journey into time-lapse photography. This project has been an ongoing process for about 4 months. There was a lot of trial and error involved, and I spent many sleepless nights in many different unexpected places. Creating this film has taught me about patience, and what it really takes to achieve the shot that you dream about in your head. I realized through the process that the gear isn't as important as the passion you put within your work. This short video is called EXISTENCE. The video is a statement not only about time and progression, but also a statement about the world we have created for ourselves. The basis of the video contrasts the two extremes of life itself: the urban metropolis, and the beauty outside the city. I love to stargaze. Watching the milky-way float across the sky is one of the most therapeutic experiences I have ever felt. If you haven’t experienced it, then I strongly recommend taking the time to do so. Enjoy. Marconi's Shipwreck on Vimeo
august 2012 by warrenellis
Marconi's Shipwreck A fairly heavily crunched version, it's not the easiest to fit 72 minutes of audio/video in a file less than 500mb. Marconi, pioneer of radio once hypothesized that soundwaves, once generated, never die, that they fade, but continue to resonate indefinitely through the universe. From the age of radio onwards, we have been cast adrift in a sea of technology, waves of information crashing against our hull. Technology has the ability to connect people, it conversely can also lead to intense feelings of isolation, lack of human contact and disconnection. And so, I find myself scuttled, clinging to the wreckage I drift, trying to make sense of these new horizons which I inhabit. This is a collected series of audio sketches made as immediate, response pieces to specific mental and emotional situations which I have found myself in over a period of two/three months. Composed as a series of sonic self portraits (self landscapes?) using modular synthesis, the individual movements have been compiled into a single, continuous 72 minute piece for performance and recording as a long-form, sculptural exposition of the internal spaces which are brought into being in an attempt to give them solid form and allow the exploration and understanding of them. Thematically following on from the concept of the audio, a visual treatment has also been produced. This uses visual analogue noise and feedback loops as a signifier of the times we live in where noise reigns over content, the illusion of social interaction brought about by the proliferation of Facebook where information is posted to be seen rather than to open dialogue, the pretence of connections and communication, the devaluation of the concept of ‘liking’ something to the push of a button on a website. The modern social environment has become little more than hundreds of people shouting and nobody listening. The visual treatment presents the viewer/listener with a world of broken signal, of anomolous patterns, a world of noise in which to scry for visions, for synchronous elements and some form of order embedded in the chaos. Note: The premiere performance of this piece was at The Outer Church in Brighton, 20th January 2012. Marconi's Shipwreck will be available on DVD via Broken20 in summer 2012. Erstlaub

Dawn Above the Cloud Sea After hiking 13km up HuangShan on the first day, we got up at 4am (after only 5hrs of sleep) to go see the sunrise over the mountain. At first it was a tease - the sky got brighter but we did not see the disk of the sun. When it finally began emerging from the grayness of the horizon, a large cloudmist swooped in to block its ascent from view. (the crowd was certainly displeased!) But at long last the mist dissipated, and the glow of morning illuminated the rolling waves of the cloudsea beneath. 2010: A Space Odyssey - NOWNESS
march 2011 by warrenellis
"Set in the deserted grounds of Paypal founder Elon Musk’s Space X jet lab in Hawthorne, California, the film was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the space race, which, according to Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, “has defined generations of artists in their desire to use new mediums and question the established rules they were taught to follow.” This cinematic collision between rocket science and visual daring is an apt match for Rodarte’s spring 2010 collection—a symphony of flesh-colored crochet knits, fluorescent fibres, leather bandages and distressed plaid. Costumed in a series of these exquisite creations, Van Seenus blurrily emerges from a shimmering seascape before running through the starkly alluring spaces of the Space X facility... Van Seenus’ hallucinatory journey, punctuated by glimpses of mysterious experiments and sudden rocket blasts, is chillingly soundtracked by LA noise-merchants No Age."

"This film records an in-depth interview with Duchamp which took place five years before his death, at the time of his first ever one-man show (at the Pasadena Art Museum). It records for posterity Duchamp talking about his life, his ideas on art, why he chose to continue living in America after fleeing France in 1915, and why he virtually abandoned his work as an artist in 1923"

"Title sequence to never-broadcast TV series. Filmed by Southern TV in 1975, and abandoned for reasons that have never been fully explained (though all sorts of rumours abound). Even the subject of the series is unclear, some claiming it is a straightforward drama about shortwave number stations, and others that it's a supernatural story about a a boy who can communicate with ghosts that have been trapped by pylons in a field near his home..."
