The Ghost of Mrs Payne (Field Recording 13.03.1975) The mayor has decided that it's time to hear more from Scarfolk's audio archive. This post refers to a previous one about the disappearance of primary school music teacher Mrs. Payne whose body was found encased inside an ancient standing stone (go here for more detail) Forensic examination of the stone revealed that it had originated more than 300 miles away and historians could not ascertain how prehistoric man had transported it to Scarfolk, much less how Mrs Payne had found her way into a 300 million year old rock. The police reported it as a chance accident. When the stone was broken into chunks and sold as 'Payne's Pain' souvenirs in the Scarfolk gift shop, purchasers began hearing ghostly music in their homes. Additionally, the music was heard at the stone circle where Mrs. Payne's body was found, as well as at the geological site of the stone's origin. The souvenirs were recalled and buried at the centre of the stone circle in Scarfolk fields, now the only location where the music can still be heard, but only on the anniversary of the death of Payne's husband who found himself unexpectedly dismembered during a pagan ritual competition for the under 10s. Igaluk - To Scare the Moon with its own Shadow Igaluk is the creation myth of the Inuit moon. With simple words, the story reveals the complexity of our morals. It inspired me to create a music that, I hope, retains the enigmatic beauty that the moon bears. This live electronic piece was developed in collaboration with the pianist Sebastian Berweck. It is the sonic result of a reflection on performance in electronic music. The performer manipulates (with a keyboard and midi controllers) piano recordings he has previously done in the studio. Igaluk was realized in 2011-2012 at the studios of Technische Universität Berlin, University of Huddersfield and University of Montreal. Its aim is to make available on vinyl the vast archives of Groupe De Recherches Musicales (GRM). Being released in batches of two every three months, it will present both known and lesser-known works. All releases will be re-cut at Dubplates & Mastering and packaged in new artwork by Stephen O'Malley, featuring bi-lingual (French/English) texts. Some of these pioneering works have been out-of-print in this format for over 30 years, and would be a valuable addition to any serious collection of electronic music. It is worth pointing out that this series is neither a re-run of the original Collection INA-GRM series or the Phillips Prospective 21e Siècle series, but something new altogether. This is Pierre Schaeffer's Le Trièdre Fertile, full version 1975-1976, with the participation of Bernard Dürr. This trihedron, Schaeffer's last piece, echoes the physicists "reference trihedron," linked to the three fundamental measurements of sound: frequency, duration and intensity. The basic signs of traditional sol-fa that enable the transcribing of pitches, rhythms and nuances also correspond to these three measurements. However, it is precisely outside or beyond these parameters that, all through his life, Schaeffer researched music. Hence, qualifying this trihedron as "fertile" is the confession "of a late repentance." On the other hand, and against all odds, this piece was only composed from synthetic sounds, developed by Bernard Dürr. It is Pierre Schaeffer's only purely electronic music work. Here, the synthesizer is rather monitored by sensitivity than by computation principles, thus letting uncanny structures emerge. Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, March 2012. She Goes Back Under Water A piece written by Sarah Angliss in 2003 for Infrasonic - a highly unusual, public experiment to explore the reputed, strange psychological effects of extreme bass sound. There is another version of this piece which incorporates live piano. Unfortunately, this hasn't been recorded. This piece is designed to be performed with live sounds from an infrasonic pipe. It was first performed in the Purcell Room, May 2002, as part of the Soundless Music concert and experiment. OMBRE, "Cara Falsa" A beautiful thing happened when Asthmatic Kitty artists Helado Negro and Julianna Barwick first met: they got to know each other. The result, a collaborative band, OMBRE, and a brand-new full-length record, Believe You Me. Recorded as the newly acquainted pair were just becoming friends, OMBRE shows Barwick's clear, high harmonies and church choir sensibilities melding well with Helado Negro's rustic-Latin-psyche-folk meets big-city-summer-blockparty. Tracks simmer with the mellow chording of nylon string guitars, bubbling electronics, and the comely pluck of harps; they rise high and mountainous with Miles Davis-y trumpet and then disappear altogether. There's a very old school jazzy soundtrack air to these sessions. (An inspiration to the sessions was Clu Gulager's 1969 film A Day With the Boys and Egberto Gismonti's fantastic late-'60s compositional jazz.) Ghosting Season - 13 featuring. Birds Of Passage A fascination with taxidermy, a love of Krautrock, and interests ranging from vintage synths to gothic Victoriana - Ghosting Season embody the eccentric and the ethereal. ‘The Very Last Of The Saints’ is the debut album from the Manchester-based duo, aka Gavin Miller and Thomas Ragsdale. Stepping off the path laid by the great British leftfield tradition (Eno, Aphex, Seefeel, Global Communication, Burial, Lone et al), Ghosting Season fuse elements of ambient techno, musique concrete, IDM and post-rock into the kind of textured soundscapes that have won them much critical acclaim via a handful of releases, remixes (Radiohead, Cloud Control) and their formidable live show (Fields, SXSW and beyond). Ghosting Season’s sound first emerged as tangents from Gavin and Tom’s previous band project, worriedaboutsatan. While the latter took its cues from the likes of Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai, the pair’s music began to head off into a different direction, one that was informed far more by electronic music, but still incorporated their love of guitars, vocals and found sounds.
