Companies With Permission to Bypass Sanctions - NYTimes.com
Over the last three presidential administrations, the United States government has granted nearly 10,000 special licenses allowing almost 4,000 American companies to enter into transactions that would otherwise be prohibited by trade embargoes and sanctions rules. Most of the licenses were issued under a broadly defined “humanitarian” exemption mandated by Congress that has allowed companies to do billions of dollars of business in countries that the United States has blacklisted as state sponsors of terrorism including Iran, Sudan and Cuba

In Hunt for Nazis, an Incomplete History - Interactive - NYTimes.com
A secret internal history of the Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting unit, the Office of Special Investigations, chronicles numerous hidden chapters in the office’s 31-year-existence. But a heavily redacted version of the report turned over by the Justice Department in response to a lawsuit deletes more than 1,000 passages in the report, including many of the most intriguing references. Here is a sampling of the original passages in the unredacted report, obtained by the New York Times, as compared with the deleted versions.

What’s in Your Water - Interactive Feature - The New York Times
The 35-year-old federal law regulating tap water is so out of date that the water Americans drink can pose what scientists say are serious health risks — and still be legal. Examine whether contaminants in your water supply met two standards: the legal limits established by the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the typically stricter health guidelines.

Rebuilding - Out of the Ashes - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com
FIRE IN THE AMERICAN WEST is a season, like winter. ... Individually, these images are portraits of ravage and reconstruction — phoenix-from-the-ashes stories played out in the subdivisions of Southern California. But seen collectively, they tell a broader and perhaps darker story about living in a landscape made ever more flammable by drought, improper forest management, climate change and runaway development.
