Subtraction.com: Subscribing to The New York Times
The total customer experience here is haphazard at best, and, at worst — I hate to say this because I am still friendly with many people at the company, but in truth there’s no way around it — it’s insulting. It shows a certain amount of disrespect to customers for a company to choose not to present a full accounting of available offers, displayed plainly and in an easy-to-compare chart, so that anyone can fully understand all of the options and decide quickly.

Khoi Vinh: On the Grid | The Color Machine
We sat down with Khoi Vinh, former Design Director of NYTimes.com, to discuss the subject that has made his work most noteworthy: the grid. And in his case, the “g” almost deserves to be capitalized. The result is an illuminating conversation about Khoi’s plans for the future, first interest in the field of design, and even the grid’s complex relationship with emotion.

Kohi Vinh: Where Are All the Ed-Ex Designers?
"I would guess that there are less than a few dozen people in the world who can create superb software for editorial products, who can combine the holistic, systems-level thinking of UX with the incisive storytelling instincts of editorial design."

Khoi Vinh: My Column on Columns
I think that the desire to approach screen-based layout with columnized text is misguided. Multiple columns are an effective layout technique in print because they improve legibility for long blocks of text. But for digital media, it’s my feeling that they make it harder to read text.

Subtraction.com: Guessing at Numbers for The Daily
"To me, The Daily is a near perfect realization of exactly the idea that occurs to print editors every single time they get their hands on digital media for the first time, regardless of what the underlying technology might be: “Let’s make it just like what we know so well in print.” As a result I found it sadly lifeless and lacking in urgency."

Subtraction.com: What the NYT Pay Wall Really Costs
Just think what else could have been done with the time and resources that the company devoted to the pay wall: entirely new news products could have been developed, products that could engage a wholly different kind of audience and expand the company’s reach by several orders of magnitude

Subtraction.com: The Speed of Redesigning
In my experience, it took no less than six months to undertake a major overhaul of any part of NYTimes.com or to update its apps or other products. And it takes years, apparently, to build something as colossal as a pay wall.

The Sad Story of Illustration on the Web
In digital media, illustration is missing in action, and its absence is palpable. I can’t think of a single, regularly publishing, large-scale digital publication that uses original illustrations prominently, much less pays illustrators a working wage for their efforts.

Subtraction.com: iPad Magazines Go to ’11
Time to focus instead on coming up with new and genuinely different solutions to this admittedly vexing and unforgiving problem facing great print publications everywhere. So I say stop it, Condé Nast. Stop it, Hearst. Stop it Adobe. Stop it everyone who’s pursuing this all but discredited strategy.

Interaction Design is the new Art Direction?
With his talk, “Digital Killed the Art Director Star”, Vinh outlined the industry’s journey from a state where new content was published once or several times a day, week or month in newspapers and magazines to one that demands continuous, nearly real-time updates.

The Times Has a New Opinion
The Opinion Pages is close to my heart because it started out as a much different kind of project: it was originally chartered as a routine and much-needed clean up of the section, and left to its own devices would likely have taken a more standard approach

Thoughts on News and User Experience
Khoi Vinh writes, “Great journalism is its own justification. But great journalism is not a substitute for great user experience design. By and large, the digital news consumption experience is a poor one which I think is what really ails the news industry."

Subtraction.com: A Change
Looking back on my tenure at NYTimes.com, I wouldn’t even know where to start in recounting the many ups and downs that I think are noteworthy. However, I’ll set aside modesty and cite one important achievement that I’m proudest of above all others: assembling the truly superb team of designers with whom I’ve worked for the past four and a half years.

Subtraction.com: Dear Designer, You Suck
Like it or not, you can’t have a serious discourse about an art form until you have people whose sole involvement in that art form is criticism. Design is far from having that. Especially the design forms to which I’m closest: graphic design, Web design, interaction design.

Khoi Vinh interviews Jason Fried
"Another thing I find interesting is that when big groups really want to get things done, they don't make the group bigger, they make the group smaller. ... And I think it also begs the question: Why have small teams as exceptions? Why not make them the norm? If they do better work, and communicate more clearly, why not encourage more small teams?"

Designing the Future of The New York Times | Made By Many - London based next generation social media digital agency
"The talk was astonishingly boring and backwards-looking, as web-hating Design Director Tom Bodkin droned on and on about a glorious past that quite frankly no-one was there to hear about, starting with his college days which were a very long time ago (Tom seemed about 130 years old). Tom, the clue here was in the title of your talk - the “future” of The New York Times."
