fleurdeliser & tuesdaysgone: Stairway to Heaven
REC: The one where Gerard accidentally taps into the memories of an angel and stumbles into the middle of a millenia-long doomed romance. A lovely story that's not even half as cheesy as the summary makes it sound. The characterisations are really good, both of the main characters and of the secondary ones. I have a great weakness for quest plots so I loved reading about Gerard's travels and his attempts at understanding what was happening to him. And his and Grant's road trip across the US in search of Frank was wonderful. Such a beautiful and satisfying story. I feel I want to read it again right now. (2013-01-06) Most Satisfying Quest OT3 AU of 2013: Because of a) the excellent characterisations of both the main and secondary characters, b) the quest Gerard embarks on to try and understand what's happening to him and to find the angel whose life he's dreaming about, c) Gerard and Grant's road trip across the US, and d) The deeply satisfying ending. (2014-02-06)
QUOTE: He wanders around for a while until a docent greets him hesitantly in Italian. Gerard's own Italian was never terribly good, but he responds as best he can. At the very least, the words are all the correct ones. Who knows how many rules of grammar he completely forgot, though.
Apparently his crappy grammar makes the docent laugh, and he agrees to show Gerard around. He mentions an earthquake multiple times, apologizing that so many areas of the basilica are closed. "But I can recommend the garden," he says.
Gerard is disappointed he can't explore the inside more thoroughly. There's something in there. Something important. He just knows. But he smiles and lets the docent lead him to the garden. It really is a lovely garden and when Gerard catches the docent checking the time, he asks if perhaps he can stay and pray. The docent nods and scurries back the way he led Gerard.
Gerard loses track of how long he spends in prayer, but when he opens his eyes he knows somehow that he'll see a little carved bird somewhere nearby. There's little alcove near him with a statue of Francis standing watch over the gardens. On the wall near the base is where Gerard finally sees it.
"I knew you'd be here," Gerard whispers. He kneels at the base of the statue and reaches out to touch the carving. The same pulse as in Paris happens, maybe even stronger, and this time he's not surprised. He closes his eyes and whispers a little prayer, "It started with you, I think. Maybe you can help?"
He opens his eyes and his vision swims. For a moment it's like he can see himself, kneeling at the foot of the statue. He turns, slowly, still on his knees, and sees a man standing in the middle of the garden. Not just a man - an unspeakably beautiful one. With wings. He looks around himself, a look of astonishment growing on his face. He looks back at Gerard.
"Who are you? How did I get here? Because I sure as hell didn't travel to Assisi in my sleep and I haven't been back here in over two hundred fucking years."
Gerard blinks. The double vision is worse now. He can see the the man - angel? he certainly doesn't sound like an angel - overlaid somehow, bizarrely, on his own shocked face. "Do you think I know? Do you think I know anything?" Then he pauses. "In your sleep?" he murmurs. "A dream, another dream."
"No, this isn't a fucking dream. I know dreams and I know visions. So since I'm not actually in Assisi this must be a vision. Your vision." And just like that, the man looks gravely concerned and his tone changes. "Are you all right? Do you need help? You must have called for my help."
"I didn't," Gerard whispers. "I mean, I didn't mean to, I didn't think... that anyone was listening."
"But I am," the angel says gently. "It doesn't take much to bring me if you really do need me."
"I'm not sure of anything," Gerard chokes out.
"Fuck," the angel says. "I'm sorry." Gerard's hands go into his hair.
"Why is this happening to me? I just want my fucking dreams back." (58,240 words)

green: Songs About the Moon
REC: His mother tells him that Mikey has gone to live with the priests. Gerard is too young to question it. This is wonderful. The worldbuilding is fascinating and the writing is beautiful and I love the way Gerard and Mikey's relationship is written. (2011-07-24)
QUOTE: The next time Gerard goes to the temple, Mikey appears beside him on one of the long benches.
"Hi," Gerard whispers.
Mikey smiles and slides his hand into Gerard's. They listen to the high priest's sermon like that, hand in hand. After the sermon, when Gerard goes up to Sha's altar, Mikey follows. He's silent when Gerard recites the prayers. He says nothing when he looks into the shining silver bowl.
Mikey looks very old sometimes.
"Why do you live with the priests?" Gerard asks one week.
"My life belongs to Sha," Mikey says. His face is blank. Gerard thinks that devoting your life to the Silver Lady is noble, and says so. Mikey doesn't answer him. (1,530 words)

bexless: Unholy 'verse (Masterlist)
REC: The one where Gerard's a priest and an investigator for the Vatican. I don't have enough words to describe how good this series is. The plot is scary and intense and heartbreaking and completely absorbing, the characters are vivid and well-rounded and completely believable, and I've never seen group dynamics and interpersonal conflicts handled better. The dialogue is to die for - spanning from deeply meaningful religious discussions to hilarious banter and gallows humour. The happy ending isn't perfect - it couldn't be after what they've gone through - but it's deeply satisfying. (2010-12-02)

Gerard tilts his head, considering. "Well, I liked it. I don't think Brian did, though."
"Whatever." Ray squints at the board and moves his armies.

REC: Pete is the devil. Absolutely hilarious! And very, very cute. (2007-11-04)
QUOTE: Pete didn't think it was going well. I mean, maybe not his worst work ever, but definitely in the bottom 10.
"I guess you look like the devil..." the kid said, and Pete perked up a little bit.
"Because I am! So listen -"
"I mean, the devil as dreamed up by a 14 year old girl. Who reads Laurell Hamilton books. And watches, like, too much Buffy." The kid looked pointedly at the bright red streaks in Pete's bangs.
Okay, maybe bottom 5.
Pete pouted. "Dude, I am totally Satan, and I'm here to steal your soul. You should be terrified right now."

nahemaraxe: The Glass Paradigm
REC: The one where Ray has just quit his job as a loa and Bob is the former god of thunder. This is a wonderful story, thoughtful, quiet, and happy. I absolutely love the way Ray & Bob are written as retired gods - both themselves and something more, something much older, with connections and histories that we only get glimpses of. I also love the feeling of transition I get from this story. The way Ray is in a sort of in-between space - he's let go of his old life but haven't really started his new one yet - and how his relationship with Bob is at once a constant and a source of new impulses. (2010-02-21)
QUOTE: "Wow. If this is you idea of flying under the radar, then I say you have to think it further," is the very first thing Ray says when he sees him. Even if Bob didn't give out that pulsing feeling - the one that gets under Ray's skin whenever they're close and makes him think about having a second heartbeat - it'd be downright impossible to miss him, stat. Mortals are casting him weird glances, for fuck's sake, and that says it all. Smiling a little, Ray shakes his head.
"You never change, don't you?"
"Why, what's wrong this time? I left the wolfskins home and look -" he opens his arms "- no hammer in sight either."
"As if I couldn't see it, hung to your belt and all," says Ray. It's hard to keep a straight face now, though, since Bob looks mildly cross.
"Well, I made the effort, okay?"
"And that's very sensible of you, but you're still wearing a hoodie on the beach."
"And sunglasses, too."
"Baby steps," concedes Ray, magnanimous. "It's good to see you."
"Yeah, same," says Bob and pats the low fence he's sitting on. "Join me. I want to see the sunset and bitch about how all this fucking sand is getting in my shoes before going home."
Chuckling, Ray sits next to him. He's wearing moccasins, and he takes them off with his toes, enjoying how their legs touch briefly with every movement. He missed that. Even if they can touch each other on other levels of existence, doing it with their bodies feels different; not better, just different. He has to wonder why they haven't met in person during the last fifty years. Ray thinks that Bob meant to give him space. Back then, Ray was already questioning his own place in the Voodoo pantheon and wondering if he shouldn't have already taken the high road, too. Now that the decision is made, Bob's got back to him. That's nice. He might be surprisingly thoughtful at times.
"You okay?" asks Bob in that moment, and Ray nods.
"Good." (5,530 words)

bexless: Heaven Help Us (Unholy 'verse 3)
REC: The third and final story in the Unholy 'verse were everything that's been building up in the first two stories comes to a head. It's just as good as the previous stories if not even better. It's scary and intense and heartbreaking and completely absorbing and I really like how the happy ending isn't perfect - it couldn't be after what they've gone through - but still so very sweet and quietly happy. Bexless's writing is as fantastic as ever with first class characterisations and group dynamics, the way she writes demon-possessed Gerard is absolutely brilliant and her Frank is so wonderfully real, so angry and hopefull and hopeless, all at the same time. (2009-05-24)
QUOTE: Craig went off to see what he could do about the kids, and the rest of them settled down to a 'find the symbol' research session that proved ultimately fruitless.
"It's just not *anywhere*," Gerard said, slamming his book closed in frustration. "Why the *fuck* didn't we stay at the Vatican? The Cardinal could have figured this shit out in five minutes."
"Don't underestimate yourself," Mikey said.
Gerard shook his head. "I just wish I could remember. I mean, we have to assume I wasn't dead, right? People don't just come back from the dead."
"But you weren't breathing," Brian frowned. "Father, you had no pulse. They put you in a fucking body bag."
Gerard waved his hand. "People seem dead and then aren't all the time."
"On the Discovery Channel!" Ray said eagerly. "See, that's what I said."
Bob leaned forward. "So the real question is, where did you go when they lost your body, how did you find us in the street, and what the fuck did you do that sent the Hoods to the floor?"
"And why can't I *remember* any of it?" Gerard sighed and dropped his head into his hands. "This crap is so much easier to deal with when it's happening to someone else."
"You're telling me," said Frank.
Gerard looked up and studied Frank's face for a minute. "How did it not drive you crazy?" he said. "When it was you?"
Frank didn't know what to say. The truth was it did drive him crazy. It still did. He was starting to feel like it always would. "I don't know," he said eventually, not looking at anyone. "The show must go on, I guess."
Everyone was quiet for a minute. Then Brian said, "Look, why don't we take this back to basics."
Gerard frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Remember when it was Frank, and we had our first research session?" Everyone nodded. "Well, let's do that. Father, you'll make a list of things to look out for. We'll write them up when we find them, keep the categories separate, and maybe a pattern will start to emerge."
"I think that's a great idea," Ray said, "But can we call a time out first? I need some air or something."
"Me too," said Gerard and Mikey in unison, which made them both laugh.
"Maybe we can go for a walk in the grounds," Ray suggested.
Frank could have gone with them, but he was finding it difficult to be around Gerard, if he was totally honest. He just felt like there should be more, like something should have changed after everything that happened, but Gerard seemed much the same as he ever had, if a little more temperamental. Before, he'd felt like they were closer than they'd ever been - and he should have been expecting something to give, because it was driving them both out of their minds, but he would take it over this weirdness. stereomer: A Red So Deep
REC: This story's based on the movie 'Constantine' that I (of course :-) haven't seen, neither have I read the comic so I suspect there were nuances and allusions that I managed to miss. On the whole I'd no problem following the story though and I really liked it. It's stark and understated with a wonderful visual quality to the action scenes and I really liked the Frank characterisation. (2008-12-14)
QUOTE: "Better than a shower," says Brendon. He tilts his head back while holding his arms out at his sides as everything staining the ground and their clothes slowly becomes gathered up as well, joining up together like some kind of supernatural mercury. The fire goes from yellow to orange to shades of red before folding in on itself and quenching abruptly, leaving the scene as cold and empty as any other parking garage in the city.
"Hellfire and brimstone," Brendon announces into the quiet.
"Hear ye, amen," Frank says. He shakes his hair out of his eyes, trying to fight the exhaustion coming over his body. It's probably only around 2:00 in the morning, which is way early compared to his sleepless nights as a teenager. Next to him, Brendon is standing attentively and Frank can tell he's satisfied with how the night's gone.
It occurs to Frank that they're evolving into the stereotypical duo - the world-weary trooper with his bright-eyed sidekick. At that thought, he considers taking the Holy Shotgun to his own head, but that would mean one less round for the demonic motherfuckers that actually deserve it and Frank is all for the better good, so he resists.
He stretches his arms up, palms turned toward the ceiling, then drops them limply at his sides. "Pancake time?"
"Your turn to buy," Brendon tells him.
They begin the trek up the ramp, in the direction of the yellow arrows painted onto the concrete. "I feel like it's been my turn to buy the past three times," Frank muses. He feels the gun brush up against his upper arm with every step.
"You're the one with the day job. Me, I just stay at home and research shit in hopes that you'll let me do something cool one day."
"Like what? Shoot stuff? And I'd hardly call playing in a deadbeat band a day job."
"It's a job, that you do in addition to this other job. It's a day job. And yes, shooting stuff," Brendon agrees. "Poking stuff with sharp things from the first century. Exorcising stuff."
"I let you burn stuff," Frank points out. (14,340 words)

bexless: Staring Through the Demons (Unholy 'verse 2)
REC: In this sequel to 'I Have Been All Things Unholy' the mismatched group of supernatural investigators continues to save lives and help make people's life better but the personal cost to the characters is mounting. Just as brilliant as the first story. It's got first class dialogue and characterisations, fabulous group dynamics, religious discussions that are in character and not just mouthpieces for the writer as so often is the case, and interpersonal conflicts that are belivievable and heartbreaking. (2008-12-07)
QUOTE: "We're not going to find out anything real unless we can get them to open up," Gerard sighed, rubbing his forehead when they were having a meeting the next day. "But I don't see that happening. They don't trust us."
"They don't have any reason to," Frank said. "They don't know who we are."
Gerard sighed. "Frankie, we've been over this. We agreed."
"No, you decided. I still think it's best to tell them -"
"What, Frank, that we watched you almost bleed to death from stigmata so we know our shit?"
"If we have to! Do you think I would have told you shit if I didn't know you were a priest?"
Mikey rolled his eyes, willing Gerard to back down so they could get on with what they were doing.
Of course, he didn't. "You didn't tell me shit anyway; as I recall you tried to throw me out of your apartment and then neglected to give me any information that might help you."
"Fuck you, I did not, you're such a-"
"Guys!" Brian cut in sharply. "There isn't time for Frank and Gerard's Great Debates right now, okay? We're going to be in Chicago in two days."
Gerard raised his hands in apology. Frank looked mad, but he went quiet, staring grumpily out of the window.
Brian went on, "We *have* to have this figured out by then because I don't think Bob's folks will be thrilled to put us all up indefinitely."
"Are you kidding?" said Bob. "It's my *mom*, dude, that's like her dream come true."
"Well, even so," Brian said, smiling slightly. "Father, are you coming to watch the show tonight? You haven't yet."
Gerard shook his head. "I actually thought I'd hang out in the lobby or whatever, see if any more kids get sick."
"Right," Mikey spoke up. "Because you're such a master of blending. You're wearing a *collar*."
Gerard rolled his eyes. "It comes off."
"Are we going out tonight?" Frank said suddenly. Everyone looked at him and he shifted in his seat. "What? Everyone's going out after the show to celebrate... I don't know, staying in one place for five minutes. I thought there might be a few loose tongues worth listening to after a drink or five."
Ray eyed him suspiciously. "You just want to go out and get wasted."
Frank scowled. "What if I do? It's been forever. And besides, we're invited. Cortez asked me if we were going."
"Cortez asked if *you* were going," Bob leered at him.
Frank flipped him off. "I'm just saying, there's no better way to gain someone's trust than getting them completely bombed."
"It certainly worked on that kid from the coffee shop," Bob said mildly, and then ducked, laughing, when Frank tried to punch him in the head.
"Oh my God, I'd forgotten that," Ray snickered. "That wasn't even a seduction, okay, that was a military campaign. The kid never stood a chance!"
"Shut up!" said Frank. "Shut the fuck up, Toro."
"But Frank, I'm straight!" Ray squeaked.
"Sure you are, baby," Bob boomed in an exaggerated pantomime of Frank's voice. "Another beer?" (53,940 words)

bexless: I Have Been All Things Unholy (Unholy 'verse 1)
REC: The first part of this three part epic is very loosely based on the movie Stigmata. Frank is the guy that's been inflicted with stigmata, his best friend Mikey's older brother Gerard is a priest and a investigator for the the Vatican, and together with the rest of Frank's work mates, Brian, Bob, and Ray, they manage to figure out the mystery and save Frank's life. This story is even better than it's reputation. It's so intense and creepy and heartbreaking and hilariously funny it takes my breath away. Lovely writing with incredibly vivid characterisations, and the group dynamics are just fabulous. (2008-07-13)
QUOTE: There was a split second pause between the impact and the pain, like getting hit with something heavy, all the breath knocking out of him and then the air rushed back into his lungs and his back was on *fire*.
"What the fuck," he choked out, and then he couldn't talk anymore, because he was screaming.
The blows came one after the other, never enough time between them for Frank to get his breath. He could barely breathe anyway - there was something on the back of his head, some*one* holding him down, he could feel their fingers digging into his scalp, keeping him there, pushing his face deep into the mattress. The pain was like nothing Frank had ever felt before; not coming from inside him but down onto him, heavy and sharp and so *big*, striking him from shoulders to knees, up and down, again and again and again. He tried to turn over, tried to get enough purchase in the sheets to pull himself away, to get *away from it* but there was that hand on his head and his wrists were tied, he could feel it now, feel the rope cutting into his flesh whenever he twisted and pulled and tried to get free.
He could hear Mikey, hear him yelling Frank's name and Frank thought, 'shit, shit, Mikey, get out of here' but then another blow fell between his shoulder blades and he felt his skin tear with a bright, wet flash, like being slit open with a knife and peeled.
It didn't stop. It still didn't stop, he was bleeding and they were still beating him, they were going to take off his fucking skin. The pain wasn't like a wave or like anything he'd ever read about, it was just constant, it just went on and on and on, he was drowning in it, it was filling up his nose and ears and mouth and getting inside him, he could feel it everywhere, there was nowhere to go. He tried to call out, tried to beg for them to stop, but his voice was muffled by the mattress and clogged with tears, his throat hoarse from screaming and the noises he could make were lost under these sounds he could hear, these sounds like hundreds of people murmuring to each other.
'How can they watch this?', he thought, and then, 'they hate me', and then a blow fell with a sick, sharp thud right under his ear, and he felt the darkness rushing up to meet him and fell gratefully inside.
When he woke up, it was to Mikey's face, white and tear-stained and striped all down one side with blood.
"Shit," Frank croaked, his throat dry and raw. "Mikey, did they hurt you? Did they hurt you?"
Mikey shook his head. He was holding Frank's hand.
"Are they gone?" Frank managed, carefully not looking at the red sheets under his arm. They were white before.
Mikey shook his head again. His mouth was pressed into a tight, pale line, like he was trying not to throw up or cry out or something.
Frank took a few deep, slow breaths, fighting his own battle not to throw up all over the bed. "Mikey, what is it? Are they still here? Who was it?"
"It wasn't anyone," Mikey said eventually, in a tiny voice Frank could barely hear. "Frankie, it wasn't *anyone*."
"What do you mean?"
"There was nobody *here*," Mikey said, his voice cracking. "It was - you were screaming, and you were jerking around everywhere and then, and then you were bleeding, and there was nobody here." (55,150 words)

REC: A really weird place in Alabama. I like this, it paints such a clear picture of this place and of the guys and their different reactions to it. It feels very 'real'. (2008-02-24)
QUOTE: The van was lost. Gerard looked out the window at the everlasting expanse of weeds and kudzu. "Goddamn, this is boring," he whined. Frank groaned from his place on the floor. "Shut up, trying to nap." Gerard lit another cigarette. "Why'd we leave the fucking highway, anyway?" Ray spoke up next, voice flat. "Because, we're nearly out of gas." Ray kept driving, jaw tense.
