Canonical Launch Ubuntu User Statistics Website - OMG! Ubuntu!
The company had shared a few early findings from its data collection tool earlier in the year, but we’ve had to wait until now to get the full set via a fancy-pants website.

Did Google just tell us that it’s getting rid of Android? – BGR
Google didn’t utter the word “Android” on stage even once. That’s something you’d expect from Samsung’s keynotes, not Google’s. The company didn’t talk about Android Pie while presenting the Pixel, and it didn’t use the word while telling the world that its newest Chrome OS tablet will support millions of apps. Some may say that, after so many years of Android, it doesn’t really matter if Google mentions it. But I’d disagree. This isn’t a mistake, it’s an intentional move from a company with a huge marketing department.

FSF statement on Microsoft joining the Open Invention Network — Free Software Foundation — working together for free software
These steps, though, do not by themselves fully address the problem of computational idea patents, or even Microsoft's specific infringement claims. They do not mean that Microsoft has dismantled or freely licensed its entire patent portfolio. The agreements for both LOT and OIN have substantial limitations and exclusions. LOT only deals with the problem of patent trolling by non-practicing entities. OIN's nonaggression agreement only covers a defined list of free software packages, and any OIN member, including Microsoft, can withdraw completely with thirty days notice.

Allen questions the Flatpak FUD - Pastebin.com
Love the show. It is now my #1 go to for all things Linux. I have a question that I am hoping you can answer for me. I am fairly new the the Linux community and recently saw that a website has come out saying that Flatpak is a security risk and shouldn't be used. I have heard it referenced on your show a number of times as a good way to install software. I was wondering if you could alleviate some confusion as to should I discontinue its use or if this is an internet hoax. Thank!

Thoughts on Microsoft Joining OIN's Patent Non-Aggression Pact - Conservancy Blog - Software Freedom Conservancy
The OIN patent non-aggression pact is governed by something called the Linux System Definition. This is the most important component of the OIN non-aggression pact, because it's often surprising what is not included in that Definition especially when compared with Microsoft's patent aggression activities. Most importantly, the non-aggression pact only applies to the upstream versions of software, including Linux itself.

Linux now dominates Azure | ZDNet
Today, Scott Guthrie, Microsoft's executive vice president of the cloud and enterprise group, said in an interview, "it's about half now, but it varies on the day because a lot of these workloads are elastic, but sometimes slightly over half of Azure VMs are Linux." Microsoft later clarified, "about half Azure VMs are Linux."

KDE neon Rebased on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" | KDE.news
ur packages are built on the latest Ubuntu LTS edition and today we have moved to their new 18.04 release. This means our users can get newer drivers and third party packages. There is an upgrade process from the previous 16.04 LTS base which we have spent the last few months writing and running QA on to ensure it runs smoothly.

Getting the team together to revolutionize Linux audio — Christian F.K. Schaller
The idea that we can have a shared infrastructure for consumer level audio and pro-audio under Linux really excites me and I do believe that if we do this right Linux will take a huge step forward as a natural home for pro-audio desktop users.

Dan on G+: I'm really not happy with this approach of FlatHub of packaging up other people's apps and distributing them without their consent.
For example here is the awesome brand new elementary Code app! Except it is literally over eight months out of date, isn't supported by elementary, and doesn't even have a README explaining what it is. https://github.com/flathub/io.elementary.code

But the metadata shipped to users sure points people to elementary for support, issue tracking, etc. It's a super shitty experience from the app developer side.

Alexa is the future of Amazon’s consumer business — Quartz
Here’s a quick rundown of the Alexa-enabled products Amazon announced: A wall clock, microwave, subwoofer, an Alexa for the car, a DVR for your TV antenna, a smart plug, and a microphone that turns your existing hi-fi setup into an Alexa-powered audio rig. Oh, and updates to the Echo Dot, Echo Plus, and Echo Show.

Firefox installs add-ons into your browser without consent… again
This was true, yet two obviously telemetry-related add-ons had been installed into my browser without me even knowing about them, and I had to investigate.
