That Sneaky Exponential
As digital networking brings scale and global reach to all aspects of our lives and activities, there will be many more ways that we'll see scale driven value shifts that threaten established business networking patterns. For example, health care networks may move from treatment transactions to collaborations around disease management. Risk management in the financial services sector may move to group-forming structures that facilitate management of "micro-risks". How will it impact your business and your industry?

I'd like to close with a speculative thought. As Francis Fukuyama argues in his book Trust, there is a strong correlation between the prosperity of national economies and social capital, which he defines culturally as the ease with which people in a particular culture can form new associations. There is a clear synergy between the sociability that Fukuyama discusses and the technology and tools that support GFNs-both are structural supports for association. As the scale of interaction grows more global via the Internet, isn't it possible that a combination of social capital and GFN capital will drive prosperity to those who recognize the value of network structures that support free and responsible association for common purposes?

Internet protocol suite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In May 1974, Kahn and Cerf published a paper titled “A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication”[4] in which they described the protocol for sharing resources using packet switching. The paper described in detail the Transmission Control Program, which was a mixture of TCP and IP. The paper set the basis for how TCP/IP would develop.

interesting theory...

The personal (computer) is political | Nominet Trust
To be able to fully participate in our physical and digital communities requires a range of actions and understanding. The value of the technical skills of coding and programming and the creativity of making and designing digital products are well understood, but at the heart of our ambition to support young people’s digital making is understanding how digital technologies are made. This understanding can come about through the process of digital making, or of tinkering with existing digital products, but it is this understanding that is so important.

In this paper, Dr Aleks Krotoski explores the importance of such issues, looking at how an understanding of how digital tools are made can help us recognise how they afford, constrain and mediate our everyday actions.

Mooers' Law

An information retrieval system will tend not to be used whenever it is more painful and troublesome for a customer to have information than for him not to have it.
Where an information retrieval system tends not to be used, a more capable information retrieval system may tend to be used even less.

The Democratic Surround: Multimedia and American Liberalism from World War II to the Psychedelic Sixties by Fred Turner

Today we find ourselves surrounded by screens – on our iPhones, our tablets, our desktop computers. Little do we know that we are living out the multimedia dreams of several dozen Cold War social scientists and propagandists, a handful of Bauhaus artists, and the musician John Cage. Stanford professor Fred Turner tracks those dreams from World War II to the psychedelic sixties and lays bare the long-buried cultural roots of an American media revolution.

(CS/EE 144) The ideas behind the web
Social networks, the web, and the internet are an essential parts of our lives and we all depend on them every day, but do you really know what makes them work? This course studies the "big" ideas behind our networked lives. Things like, what do networks actually look like (and why do they all look the same)? How do search engines work? Why to memes spread the way they do? How does web advertising work? For all these questions and more, the course will provide a mixture of both mathematical analysis and hands-on labs. This course can be combined with CS/EE 145 and CS 141a or CS/EE 143 to satisfy the project requirement for CS undergraduate degree, but CS/EE 143 and CS 141a are not required prerequisites. The course assumes students are comfortable with graph theory, probability, and basic programming.

The Technium: You Are Not Late
The last 30 years has created a marvelous starting point, a solid platform to build truly great things. However the coolest stuff has not been invented yet — although this new greatness will not be more of the same-same that exists today. It will not be merely “better,” it will different, beyond, and other. But you knew that.

What you may not have realized is that today truly is a wide open frontier. It is the best time EVER in human history to begin.

amor mundi: An Open Letter To The Robot Cultists --
The digital revolution is a lie. Cyberspace isn't a spirit realm. It belches coal smoke. It is accessed on landfill-destined toxic devices made by wretched wage slaves. It abetted financial fraud and theft at every level of society around the world. Its "openness" and its "freedom" turned out to be targeted marketing harassment, panoptic surveillance, and zero comments.

Webstock '13: Tricia Wang - The Elastic Self: what millions of Chinese youth tell us about the future of online identities & on Vimeo
The internet is global, but the experience of it is not universal. China and the US are both online, but they are not experiencing the same internet. What is it like to grow up digitally connected under an authoritarian regime? The sudden availability of the internet combined with open-market capitalism over the last decade has created a new social space in China where a new self has emerged, an Elastic Self. What does this mean for the largest population of internet users in the world? And what does this mean for how identities are produced online at large?
