A Short History of Internet Protocols at CERN
Now that the Internet has exploded in popularity on a world wide scale, with a major component of its success (the World Wide Web) being developed at CERN, it seems a good time to look back and trace the history of the Internet at CERN. Even before the Web allowed Internet penetration in the most unexpected places, the presence of the Internet protocols at CERN had already encouraged their adoption not only in many other parts of Europe but also in such influential organizations as the ITU and ISO in Geneva.

On the Internet, when I send my ones and zeros somewhere, they shouldn't have to wait in line behind the ones and zeros of wealthier people or corporations. Greg's Cable Map is an attempt to consolidate all the available information about the undersea communications infrastructure. The initial data was harvested from Wikipedia, and further information was gathere by simply googling and transcribing as much data as possible into a useful format, namely a rich geocoded format. I hope you find the resource useful and any constructive criticism is welcome.A mate of mine did an article on it on his South African Tech site, Check it out if you want more background info.

The data is available in ArcGIS .shp file format on request, so long as it's not going to be used for profit.

Internet Architecture and Innovation
“Many people have a pragmatic attitude toward technology: they don’t care how it works, they just want to use it. With regard to the Internet, this attitude is dangerous. As this book shows, different ways of structuring the Internet result in very different environments for its development, production, and use. If left to themselves, network providers will continue to change the internal structure of the Internet in ways that are good for them, but not necessarily for the rest of us — individual, organizational or corporate Internet users, application developers and content providers, and even those who do not use the Internet. If we want to protect the Internet’s usefulness, if we want to realize its full economic, social, cultural, and political potential, we need to understand the Internet’s structure and what will happen if that structure is changed.”

Why Google Became A Carrier-Humping, Net Neutrality Surrender Monkey (UPDATED) | Epicenter | Wired.com
If Google fought for wireless neutrality, it would give Microsoft another shot to break into the mobile market.

And why would Google want that?

The answer should be: its principles, its years of rhetoric about openness, its $4.6 billion bet on open wireless spectrum and its famous mantra, “Don’t Be Evil.”

But principles are easy to discard, it seems, when one’s in search of the next gold mine. “Don’t Be Evil” can become “Just Don’t Be Stupid” when you’re in first place.

HOWTO: Make a cat 5/ethernet/RJ45 cable
When my house was built in 1913, the builders didn't have the foresight to run cat 5 everywhere. So, last night, I had to run some more, and I realized that even a lot of tech-friendly people don't know how easy it is to make your own cat 5 cables. If you're going to run a lot of cat 5, making your own is about a tenth of the cost of buying pre-crimped cables. And, it only takes a minute or two for each cable.

This article shows you how to get the few pieces of equipment you'll need, and breaks it down into a simple three-step process.

How neutrality locks in the web's 'Hyper Giants' • The Register
Deliverers of content and services can climb off the public internet, and do deals directly with the customer-facing networks to which you or I subscribe. Instead of making a journey of two dozen hops around the world, the material need only take two or three.

This is what Google, Amazon and others do. They operate private internets of their own, and peer with the largest ISPs.

Three things are required. One is a peering arrangement with the largest ISPs, typically achieved by hooking into a private peering facility. The other is to help out the ISPs by installing caching servers at the edge of the network.

netless. a network without The Net.
netless. a digital network that is using city public transport as its information carrier. permission-less, distributed and friend-2-friend, netless is an independent communication tactic; invisible digital network that does not need wires or dedicated radio frequencies. alternative communication device that helps its users to avoid such controlled and observed space as the internet. free from governmentally owned medium channels (radio frequency ranges, emission power regulations), proprietary locked technologies and cable networks, netless stays Yours Truly.

netless is an anamorphic structure of nodes that is capable of holding some amounts of digital data. each node is a small, low-power wireless digital transponder. there is no permanent network connection. every time any node would appear in the vicinity of any other node - they would establish a wireless link and swap the data that was stored internally.

THE IRISH GOVERNMENT has had extensive private discussions on introducing internet blocking – barring access to websites or domains – according to material obtained under a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

The approach is used by some internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile network operators to block access to child pornography. But increasingly, governments and law enforcement agencies are pushing for much broader use, ranging from blocking filesharing sites to trying to tackle cybercrime and terrorism.

How Amsterdam was wired for open access fiber
The city of Amsterdam has been involved for several years in building Citynet, a partnership between the city and two private investors to wire 40,000 Amsterdam buildings with fiber. And it's not just fiber, it's open access fiber—any ISP can sign up to use the infrastructure and deliver ultra-fast Internet access. In 2008, the European Union ruled that the city's involvement in the project was in fact legal, and that it was not improperly interfering in the market. We asked Herman Wagter, CEO of the company that built Citynet fiber project, to talk about how he got the job done, and to explain the challenges of rolling out fiber in a densely crowded European city.

Is ChatRoulette the Future of the Internet or Its Distant Past? -- New York Magazine
The first time I entered ChatRoulette—a new website that brings you face-to-face, via webcam, with an endless stream of random strangers all over the world—I was primed for a full-on Walt Whitman experience: an ecstatic surrender to the miraculous variety and abundance of humankind. The site was only a few months old, but its population was beginning to explode in a way that suggested serious viral potential: 300 users in December had grown to 10,000 by the beginning of February. Although big media outlets had yet to cover it, smallish blogs were full of huzzahs. The blog Asylum called ChatRoulette its favorite site since YouTube; another, The Frisky, called it “the Holy Grail of all Internet fun.” Everyone seemed to agree that it was intensely addictive—one of those gloriously simple ideas that manages to harness the crazy power of the Internet in a potentially revolutionary way.

"Kids have always cared about privacy, it's just that their notions of privacy look very different than adult notions," she says. "Kids don't have the kind of privacy that we assume they do."

"As adults, by and large, we think of the home as a very private space – it's private because we have control over it. The thing is, for young people it's not a private space – they have no control. They have no control over who comes in and out of their room, or who comes in and out of their house. As a result the online world feels more private because it feels like it has more control."

Following a request by the Federal Communications Commission (including chairman Julius Genachowski '91), the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University recently conducted a major independent review of existing literature and studies about broadband deployment and usage throughout the world. The project, designed to inform the FCC’s efforts in developing the National Broadband Plan, resulted in a report that is now available on the FCC’s site. The report is open for public comment on broadband.gov until Nov. 16. The “WiFi At Conferences” Problem - Joel on Software
At the very least, though, a venue should be able to tell you how many access points they actually have (if it’s just one, you’ve got problems), whether they are managed access points or not, whether dedicated ports with higher priority can be provided for the speakers and for journalists that do not share bandwidth with the audience, how many IP addresses the DHCP server can provide, the total number of people that can be online at once, and the amount of bandwidth available to the entire site. If you can’t get good answers to these questions before the conference begins, you have to assume that they’ll be running a single, consumer router connected to a DSL line and that’s about all you get.

eircom bay: the pirate bay for eircom users
Our internet providers shouldn't decide what we can and can't access. Yet, Eircom agreed—without legal contest—to block access to thepiratebay.org at the request of the music industry. Luckily, their methods of blocking access are juvenile.

Point your browser to eircombay.com/go to continue using The Pirate Bay!

KeyWorx
KeyWorx was an application framework developed at Waag Society, originally suited for "live" multi-user audio/visual performances. This code base, later called the classic application, was followed in 2006 by a successor named KeyWorx/Live, developed as an open source project. KeyWorx played a role in many of the projects conducted at Waag Society, being mostly multimedia projects for education. In 2008 KeyWorx went mobile, with the development of 7scenes, a mobile platform for location-based gaming and tours.

Fibrestream
We’re interested in the shaping the future of a new utility. We know that the biggest secret in telecommunications is ownership, and that to bridge the digital divide we have to remove barriers to access.

That’s why uniquely, Fibrestream helps customers develop mutual models of ownership – giving communities the keys to their own network.

The Tories think the internet favours them. They're wrong | Comment is free | Guardian
What will actually happen is that chunks of the public sector will be parcelled out to online providers, but instead of mass privatisation it will be called post-bureaucratisation. And when it emerges that Facebook and Mumsnet are not quite equal to the task of supplanting the welfare state, social policy will be back to the old, analogue drawing board.
