Leo Tolstoy on Finding Meaning in a Meaningless World
“For man to be able to live he must either not see the infinite, or have such an explanation of the meaning of life as will connect the finite with the infinite.”

Plain Text: The Poetics of Computation - Dennis Tenen (2017)
This book challenges the ways we read, write, store, and retrieve information in the digital age. Computers—from electronic books to smart phones—play an active role in our social lives. Our technological choices thus entail theoretical and political commitments. Dennis Tenen takes up today's strange enmeshing of humans, texts, and machines to argue that our most ingrained intuitions about texts are profoundly alienated from the physical contexts of their intellectual production. Drawing on a range of primary sources from both literary theory and software engineering, he makes a case for a more transparent practice of human–computer interaction. Plain Text is thus a rallying call, a frame of mind as much as a file format. It reminds us, ultimately, that our devices also encode specific modes of governance and control that must remain available to interpretation.

Uncle Bob Martin on writing good code
Most programmers want to write good code; but believe that their employers don’t want good code. They are wrong.

Most employers want the benefits of good code; but don’t know that good code provides those benefits.

We do. So, we should write good code.

The unspoken truth about managing geeks
https://old.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/f76oql/opinion_the_unspoken_truth_about_managing_geeks/
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22451835

"Geeks are smart and creative, but they are also egocentric, antisocial, managerially and business-challenged, victim-prone, bullheaded and credit-whoring. To overcome these intractable behavioral deficits you must do X, Y and Z."
