An analysis of "Serpico"
A guest piece on Roger Ebert's blog by Pablo Villaça about one of the best movies ever made, directed by the late Sidney Lumet. The piece dissects not only the themes and plot, but also how the direction, cinematography, editing and Strasburg's Method (of which Al Pacino is a student) all came together to form a tremendous movie that's still just as powerful today as it was when it came out in 1973.

Christopher Hitchens on the concept of an afterlife
The author, journalist and legendary grump reflects on the idea of life after death and why he's unwilling to buy into it, even as cancer ravages his body.

If that sounds cynical, then perhaps it is – Mr. Hitchens could certainly never be called the least skeptical man in the world – but he makes a great point that if we spend too much time pining for something better *after* this life, we might miss all the great things we could do with the one we already have.
