Everything Hannibal wore on 'Hannibal' |
As we await the show’s final act, we honor Hannibal’s fashion legacy — in chronological order from the pilot onwards. (A shout-out to Hannibal costume designer Christopher Hargadon, Hannibal’s three-piece man since day one.)

This is the absolute greatest. Hannibal in besuited glory, with occasional appearances by less gloriously adorned characters.

avengers assemble - Pinboard Search Guide
The catch: there are some basics you will need to know about Pinboard's search engine to make the most of it. To start with, Pinboard uses Sphinx Search. If you're an expert on that, or want to look through the documentation yourself, you can stop reading now. That said, Pinboard's implementation of Sphinx Search sometimes seems puzzling if not buggy. Pinboard provides no documentation for its search, and an inquiry with Pinboard support (aaages ago) has gone unanswered. So we can't claim that this guide will answer all your questions, but we'll certainly do our best.

How To Restore, Refresh, or Reset Your Windows 8 Installation |
In addition to the standard System Restore feature, Windows 8 has features for “refreshing” and “resetting” your PC. Think of these as ways of quickly re-installing Windows — either keeping your personal files or deleting them from your hard drive. In addition to functioning as troubleshooting features, Refresh and Reset are similar to the “restore to factory defaults” option found on many simpler devices.

talitha78: Vidding for Dummies, aka Vidding Tech for People Who Hate Vidding Tech
One of the numerous things that makes entry into vidding difficult for those not technically-inclined is that there is no one tried-and-true way to vid. Every vidder does it differently; every vidding set-up (hardware and software) is slightly different. So you have to stumble your way through tutorials and trial and error, and find what works for you.

Feeding Hannibal
I call my nephew who is a sports medicine intern. “Hey Jay, are there any muscles on a woman that are big enough to make into a roast?” Thighs, he thinks. OK. I email my  niece who is a physiotherapist. “How big is the thigh bone?” About 1 ½  inches diameter by 18 inches long, Chantelle says. Check. Of course, I cross-reference with Dr. Google.

f.lux: software to make your life better
Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?

Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.

F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

Forbes List of the 15 Wealthiest Fictional Characters
Forbes magazine, which will rank the wealth of Tsetse flies based on blood accumulation if it meant the Internet would pay attention to the finance magazine, has assembled a list of the 15 wealthiest fictional characters based on net worth, as determined by the fictional character’s source material, and where possible, “valued against known real-world commodity and share price movements. In the case of privately held fictional concerns, we seek to identify comparable fictional public companies.”

lolaraincoat | What would surprise Captain America?
I've been reading a lot of Avengers fics - there's been a lot to read - and I've been liking many of these fics quite a lot. Except that there's this one thing that's driving me crazy, so crazy that I keep having to back-button out of perfectly good fics before Nick Fury and the Hulk can even begin to get their freak on, which is kind of tragic. So in case you were thinking of writing anything in the Marvel-verse ever, and you were hoping to avoid me making sad puppy-eyes face, please, please, please consider this question carefully:

What would surprise Captain America in 2012?

synecdochic: okay, fandom, this is driving me nuts
Dear Avengers fandom,

After reading one too many fics set in Manhattan where someone or someones takes Steve out to "the mall" for all the essentials of 21st century life, I can't stand it anymore.

There are no suburban-style malls in Manhattan.

Yes. So much yes to this meta. Authors getting Manhatten wrong is jarring enough to throw me out of stories momentarily. But thankfully, I've avoided most of those anyway.

Phonetic Encoding: A Linguistic Upgrade For Your Mental Hard Drive | Mentalist & Consultant Joe Riggs
In the past, many experts were fond of describing memory as a sort of tiny filing cabinet full of individual memory folders in which information is stored away. Others likened memory to a neural supercomputer wedged under the human scalp. But today, experts believe that memory is far more complex and elusive than that; and that it is located not in one particular place in the brain, but is instead a brain-wide process.

Get Hired.
I was recently asked for interview advice.

1. These are guidelines and examples. Don't repeat them verbatim. Do I have to say this? Maybe. Contrary to what a lot of people seem to believe, interviews are not a time to spew a bunch of jargon and formulaic crap. Be smart, be honest, and be yourself, because those BS answers you think I (the interviewer) can't see through? Surprise! I can.

another boy who lived - How To Build Your Own Mind Palace
I’ve been using a mind palace since my teens and never thought it odd until I saw tumblr’s reaction to Sherlock’s use of the technique. A couple days ago I found myself building an extension in order to cram for my philosophy exam the following day and I figured I’d use this as an example and get you all exploiting the genius of this method.

Because, frankly, that one on wikihow that’s been going around is a headache, and mine has bad jokes and Sherlock examples.

If anyone’s any further questions just hit up my ask and we’ll talk.

pennypaperbrain: Sherlock in the British school system
So here follows a ‘How Things Work’ post about the British school system at the time Sherlock would have been in it. Assuming BBC Sherlock is the same age as Benedict Cumberbatch then I was in the same intake year as him; I went to eight schools and got a ‘genius’* label. So I have a fair spread of relevant experience.

I should emphasize that I'm talking about schools in the late 80s/early 90s. I don't know much about how things are now.
