The 12 Best Games for the DS
Long the 800-lb gorilla of handheld gaming, the DS is in its twilight, besieged by smartphones and pushed aside by the 3DS. And, yet, you got one, you old softy.

Here are 12 excellent games as a nice reward for showing an old handheld some love.

sara | And then some.
So, I read this post by templemarker about comics for moviegoers and slash fans, and I thought 'well that seems quite limited in scope'. Tights are fine and all, but tights aren't the be-all and the end-all of comic-reading.

Thus, an impromptu recs list for nascent comics fans who want to go beyond superheroes (and maybe venture into a media form where you haven't necessarily got to go subtext-hunting and imagining backstory if, say, you like stories about women, or queers, or people of color). This is heavy on U.S., Canadian, and U.K. creators because frankly my grounding is in American-style comics; there are also very active comics traditions in other parts of the world, but I am not well-read in those areas (manga remains essentially a mystery to me, for example).

templemarker | Comic Books: An Introduction for the Interested Moviegoer
Not everyone is going to be as devoted to and obsessed with comics as I am. That's okay! It's also totally okay if your interest in comics is peaked from watching X-Men First Class, or Captain America, or Batman: The Dark Knight. That's what those movies are for: to introduce you to a world of entertainment that you might not otherwise have been interested in.

I went over a bunch of great comics to ease you into the media with this week's episode of Slash Report, and provided some links for you to get started. But I thought it might also be helpful for folks who haven't been moved to read any comics before to provide a quick primer of where to start.

zahrawithaz - More than 50 books by Queer People of Color
Thus far it's 32 authors and 66 books. This list is obviously partial--it skews American, Anglophone, African-American, and bisexual, just to start, because of my own experiences, though I haven't read every book on it myself. I would really love to add to it, and welcome additions. Sadly, at the moment I think it's only a list of books by LGB people of color, and I'd be particularly interested in works by trans authors. (Also, if any of these books are transphobic, I'd like to flag that, too. Let me know.)

Like [info]queerlit50 this list is about the author's identity, rather than content, so it includes books in which everyone is white (Giovanni's Room) and no one is obviously queer (A Raisin in the Sun). If I have inadvertently identified anyone incorrectly (for example, including someone of Cuban descent who doesn't consider themselves of color, or calling someone queer who doesn't identify that way), please let me know and I will be happy to amend.

ship_manifesto: Captain America/Iron Man (Marvel Comics)
Why Iron Man / Captain America?
Because Brian Michael Bendis loves us and wants us to be happy? (See volumes 1-4 of The New Avengers trade paperbacks.) Because they've lived together on and off for about ten years of Marvel Time and keep coming back for more. Because Tony knows what Steve likes in a bagel. Because there are more dramatic near-death "Heroic sacrifice in an attempt to trade my life for yours!" scenes than any other pairing I can think of. Because Idealism/Ingenuity make a great couple, as far as I'm concerned. Because they're Just That Wonderful.

greendreaming: Who is John Sheppard?
So, there has been some interesting (and amusing) discussion lately of Joe Flanigan's acting talents and, correspondingly, John Sheppard's basic underlying weirdness: the lack of affect, the funny looks, the inability to react to other people in a genuine way, the smooth but somehow utterly asexual charm, the way that everything he says is undercut by his perma-smirk and ironic delivery.* In particular, [info]helenish talks about the Flan here and [info]cesperanza has some things to say about him here (read through the comments too), both of which cracked me up but also made me think about how John Sheppard and his freaky disassociative personality disorder are a vital part of what I love about SGA.

So while I was thinking about the weirdness of John, I realized that several of my favorite stories attempted to explain his personality and background in various ways. So I present to you here some recs on a theme:

silvia kundera - Cobb/Saito Picspam and Pairing Manifesto (Inception 2010)
One of the things that works so thematically for me about Cobb/Saito is that coming through for Saito (proving he could control himself, could conquer inception, could be recognized by Saito in limbo and rescue him) bookends so nicely with Cobb's conquering of his guilt and the self-hatred that's haunting him through Mal's projection.

If you want to look at the movie as kind of *Cobb's* successful inception - being lead out of his mental imprisonment and set up to confront his fear and chose to let Mal's ghost go - then Saito is part of his cure. Proof that it wasn't his fault, that he's not always poison.

rsadelle: Mike Carden Facts, Pictures, and Recs (Daily Treat: December 3)
Many people dislike Carden. I find him kind of fascinating. People who dislike him either dislike him because they like Tom or because they think he looks creepy. When I was first getting into bandom, one of the lectures I got about not liking William Beckett was from a friend who grudgingly allowed that I could like Bill as long as I didn't like Mike. I have a strong rebellious streak when it comes to fandom, so that probably contributed to my interest in Mike.

This was originally going to be a more general Mike Carden primer, but the reality is that there's a perfectly good, if older, one here (as of this moment, the pictures are no longer there, but the information is) and [info]riorhapsody has written an excellent and excellently well sourced TAI primer. So this is going to be three things: interesting facts about Mike Carden, pictures I feel are worth sharing, and information about Mike Carden pairings. Enjoy!

Making Light: Elf Help, a <strike>Parlor</strike> Bookstore Game
Oh, dear. The tough economic times have hit the chain bookstore where you work, and the orders have come down from Head Office: cut the SF&F department (possibly Horror as well).

Your store manager is a fan, however, and she’s made a stealthy swap. She stopped buying Self-Help books instead, changed a few shelf labels, and kept the entire SF&F section.

Unfortunately, people keep coming into the bookstore looking for self-help books, and all you have are genre. To cover for your manager, you’re going to have to find SF&F (and Horror, if desired) books to help these poor folk who are looking for guidance on their personal problems.

Have I mentioned that your job is at stake here?*

* Yes, The Princess Bride would make a great study of different management styles.

Reclist: Three, Four, More-somes (aka GSF)
This is not a masterlist. I have not read all the fic of this genre in bandom. There are a lot of pairings and genres that I don't/haven't read. The fic on this list is fic that I have personally enjoyed, but may not be to everyone's taste.
