Cheap easy to make food that tastes good — Coming from a state champion baker:
If y’all use a decent box mix and use melted butter instead of vegetable oil, an extra egg, and milk instead of water, no one can tell the difference. I sure as hell can’t.

Also, if you add a little almond extract to vanilla cake, or a little coffee to chocolate cake, it sends it through the roof.

This concludes me attempting to be helpful.

Personally, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for blondies. They often get thought of as the brownie’s less-attractive sibling, but I dare to disagree. What they lack in chocolate they make up for in rich vanilla and caramel flavors.

Easy Cold-Brewed Coffee Recipe - CHOW
One of my biggest pet peeves is ordering an iced coffee and watching the barista pour piping-hot coffee over ice, a sure way to yield an insipid, watered-down drink. Chilling hot-brewed coffee is marginally better, but cold-brewed coffee is where it’s at. You don’t need any fancy equipment, just time and a big pitcher, and you’ll have smooth, concentrated coffee that you can dilute with water, ice, or even a little booze.

Sweet Technique: How to Make Swiss Buttercream | Serious Eats: Sweets
I'm here today to make a case for Swiss buttercream, the edible cake decorating medium that so many bakers have abandoned when decorating their cakes these days. Now that it's become de rigueur to cover and decorate celebration cakes with fondant, the flexible sugar dough that's become exceedingly popular thanks to cake TV shows, Swiss buttercream has become an afterthought; the glue that adheres fondant to cake. For me, a cook who believes that it's never worth it to sacrifice flavor for appearance, the demise of buttercream cakes is a travesty.

Lulu the Baker: Lemon Sugar Cookies with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting
Last week, I asked my 4-year-old if she wanted to help me make chocolate chip cookies. She looked at me and said, "Mom, I'd rather have lemon cheesecake." Such a funny girl! Towards Sustainability: Homemade Shaving Gel
I received many comments (both positive and negative) regarding the shaving 'gel' recipe I posted a couple of years ago and a result, I have tweaked the recipe a little.

My husband used to suffer from shaving rash quite badly, but has not had any troubles since using this gel - for over two years now - and a result is a big fan.

Please note however, that this recipe does not make a thick gel like commercial shaving gels - the mix will be only marginally thicker in texture than the liquid castile soap - however a little goes a long way and the aim is to only coat the skin enough to lubricate the razor.

Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar Recipe {Video Tutorial} « The Mommypotamus
Do you love the idea of homemade spa goodies but think they are “too much trouble” to make? Or maybe it worries you that the exact form of sodium laurel sulphate in your bottle of suds is used to degrease car engines. (Don’t see it listed? It has about 150 aliases and is often used in “natural” and “herbal” shampoos! ) Well then, I have just the thing for you!

This video/photo tutorial – adapted from and inspired by Andrea at Frugally Sustainable – is your guide to hassle-free soapmaking. Chocked full of natural humectants and softening butters, this recipe takes just 30 minutes of active time.* Oh yes! Half an hour and you’ll have a revitalizing, moisturizing rosemary mint bar – or eight – curing on your countertop. I am by no means an expert at soapmaking (this was my first time!), but this was really simple and fun to do. I am LOVING the results and want to share it with you!

Easy Homemade Deodorant That Really WORKS!!! « The Mommypotamus
Back in college I was always warning Daddypotamus about the toxins he was putting into his body, namely cigarettes and Taco Bueno (Gasp! I know, I can’t believe he ate Taco Bueno either!! :) ) Well, to show me that my concerns were being taken seriously he decided to take steps to ease the toxic burden on his body.

By giving up deodorant. In the summer. In TEXAS.

Not the “sacrifice” I would have chosen, but it was pretty clever on his part. Rather than give up something that would bother him, he ditched the product whose absence would bother me. A lot. That, ahem, was the beginning of my journey to find a non-toxic deodorant that can handle the manliest of smells. Most commercially sold deodorants contain a slew of toxic chemicals you don’t want in your body and even “natural” deodorants like crystal stones and sprays contain potassium aluminum sulfate (which has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease). The ones that are truly non-toxic typically lose their effectiveness after a few hours.

Homemade Toothsoap & Toothpaste Recipes « The Mommypotamus
Why tooth soap, you ask? Good question!!!

By now you probably already know that prior to 1938 fluoride was exclusively sold as rat poison and has since been linked to lowered IQ, weakened bones, thyroid suppression, lowered metabolic function, Alzheimers AND Down’s Syndrome (source). All experts agree that this stuff is not for babies – most of us would go further and say it’s not for anyone! Unfortunately, most commercial toothpaste manufacturers – even many of the “natural” ones – contain fluoride AND sodium lauryl sulfate (a foaming agent).

Cinnamon Russian Braid - She Makes and Bakes
Not only is this very easy to make, it's a beautiful loaf of bread, outside and in. I'm really not sure why it's called a Russian braid, but let's just go with it. The bread is similar to a cinnamon roll, but you use cream instead of butter. Also, the cinnamon sugar is very potent--there's much more cinnamon in the mix than for regular cinnamon rolls. A great alternative to this is subbing out the cinnamon for cocoa powder, and then you have a chocolate braid. I haven't tried this because I can't seem to move beyond the cinnamon, but I'm sure it's excellent. The next time you want a sweet treat, you definitely should try this!

While it looks like it must take a lot of time and be hard to make, it's really not. The extra steps are rolling it out, spreading the toppings on it, rolling it up, cutting it, twisting it, and cramming it into pans to rise. I think it takes the same amount of time as cinnamon rolls, and it's definitely something unique looking. Your guests will be impressed. I guarantee it.

Raspberry-Filled Cinnamon Muffins | Serious Eats : Recipes
I'm not a baker by nature, but winter makes me crave cornbread, brownies, and scones. I want to scarf pound cake and popovers until I burst. And when it's cold outside, there's nothing greater than curling up to An Affair to Remember (or it's remake, A Blaffair to Rememblack) while munching on a nice, warm muffin. If that muffin has only 172 calories and 4.6 grams of fat, it's all the better.

This recipe, for Raspberry-Filled Cinnamon Muffins, is adapted from an old Jenny Craig cookbook called No Diet Required. I received it as a gift in college, and it's yielded enough decent meals over the years to avoid the stoop sale bin. Baked Pineapple Casserole | Ezra Pound Cake
It’s the sort of golden mystery dish you might find bubbling away on a Southern granny’s Easter table, since pineapple goes so well with ham.

To appreciate this casserole, you have to refrain from passing judgment on its ingredients: crushed pineapple, sugar, Ritz cracker crumbs, butter and cheddar cheese. You have to accept the logic that, if pineapple and cheese go together, and cheese and crackers go together, then pineapple, crackers and cheese are perfectly fine together.

Because they are.

Big Flavors From A Tiny Kitchen: Pan Fried Tofu, Kale, and Stir-Fried Noodles
This is a really tasty vegan meal that I found over at Vegan Yum Yum a while back. It's a really delicious and hearty recipe, and we even had a little bit leftover (We almost always finish up a block of tofu between the two of us, so this was a big surprise). I used the rest of the kale that we got from the garden fairy last week, and it was great!

I found that the easiest way to handle the dipping sauce was just to pour a little over the tofu and noodles on the plate, because it can be tricky dipping slippery tofu and noodles in something that liquidy. I didn't try this out in my cast iron skillet, because I didn't want to get frustrated if the noodles or tofu started sticking. I have a great nonstick pan that got the tofu nice and brown. One of the best parts of this dish is the caramelized garlic bits that end up in the pan. Yum! I'll definitely be making this one again.

These peaches and cream ice pops, for example, are delicious and refreshing treat for a hot day. Each pop is sweetened by just a tiny bit of honey–as little as a quarter tablespoon. These cakes are extremely light, airy and moist, nothing like the dense cake recipes more traditionally used as cupcake bases. Personally, I consider this a very good thing. You know what else? Sans frosting, they’d make great breakfast muffins — just dial back one of the sugars by a generous quarter-cup and maybe even swap half of that flour with whole wheat. You could also chop in some pecans, but don’t blame me if nobody in your house wants to share.

Cinnamon Bubble Buns - Blog Posts - Foodbuzz
My kitchen walls are finally done, and I love the final color. Now we’re tackling the living room today. Don’t worry – I picked up THREE paint sample jars to make sure we (when I say we, I really mean my husband) get the color right the first time.

To reward my husband for his patience and hard work, I made these Cinnamon Bubble Buns for him this morning. A miniature version of monkey bread, made in muffin tins. They are delicious and just the right size. :)

Dulce de Leche Cupcakes — Joy the Baker
Some people make their own dulce de leche by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk…. literally, in the can. While many have had success with this technique, I’m convinced that I would both injure an eye and burn my house down… so I just buy my dulce de leche. I also really like the consistency of this particular caramel product. It’s thick but still spreadable and works really well in my frosting. ((I got this particular dulce de leche at Whole Foods… but you can totally find this La Salamandra product on Amazon))

I’m not saying you shouldn’t make your own… you look perfectly capable. I’ve just never done it… so I’ll leave you to google and experiment with that whole thing on your own. Go with God. … and I love you.

Recipe: Buttery Lemon Angel Biscuits | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn
Angel biscuits have also been called "bride biscuits" because their combination of three different leavening agents means that they are foolproof and reliable — they will always rise, even for an inexperienced cook.

I just love their taste, and their tenderness. Straight out of the oven these are probably my favorite sort of bread. There is a mild, yeasty sweetness, and that tenderness you expect in an excellent biscuit.

Recipe: Back to Basics Cherry Pie | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn
This recipe isn't sickly sweet like cherry pies you might be used to. It honors the fruit in the most basic way — no funny spices or nuts trying to make this something it shouldn't be — and it calls for something simple and creamy as an accompaniment: vanilla or fior di latte ice cream, whipped cream, or crème fraîche. Leftovers were washed down after lunch with a cool glass of the local Chianti, Cacchiano.

Recipe: Ginger-Lemon Scones :: Culinate
For years I made the Ginger Cream Scones from Deborah Madison’s Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone; it was a very popular recipe among my family and friends. After a while, I began making little changes to the recipe, adding whole-wheat pastry flour to the mix, replacing the cream with half-and-half, alternating between lemon and orange zest, skipping the wash of cream and sprinkle of sugar over the top . . . you get the picture.

Dinner Tonight: Lamb Stew with Lemon and Thyme | Serious Eats : Recipes
the real reason to make this stew is the balance between the meaty, succulent lamb and the lemon's acidity. Both the juice and the peel are used here, lacing every bite with just the right amount of tang. It's impressive, especially considering how quickly it all comes together.

Dinner Tonight: Pork and Lemon 'Polpettine' Meatballs | Serious Eats : Recipes
These are especially foolproof. The inimitable Nigel Slater comes to the rescue with these quick-to-prepare polpettine with a mixture dramatically seasoned with lemon, thyme, Parmesan, and minced up anchovies. That last part might sound a little odd, but the anchovies sort of disappear into the meat, leaving behind all their round, salty flavor.

Cook the Book: Lemony Chicken Pot Pie with Parsley Biscuit Crust | Serious Eats : Recipes
The chicken-y base is a mix of onions and fennel, cubed Yukon Gold potatoes, and chunks of chicken breast sautéed with a bright lemon-wine sauce. The pastry comes in the form of parsley-flecked biscuits that are dolloped over the chicken mixture and showered with Parmesan before baking. When the pie emerges from the oven, the biscuits are golden brown, light and crisp on the top and properly soggy on the bottom where they meet the pie filling.

[...I almost started drooling just looking at the picture. SOMEDAY I WILL MAKE THIS.]
