teen wolf coffee orders!
Mama McCall: Depends on the time of day. If it’s just before an early shift, she’ll have a dark roast with room for cream; if it’s just before a night shift, she’ll have a triple-shot mocha. If it’s just after a rough shift, she’ll have “Whatever the hell will be fastest, I have twelve hours before I have to get back to the hospital and a kid to see.” If it’s autumn, she’ll have a pumpkin spice latte, because fuck you, pumpkin spice lattes are delicious.

Papa Stilinski: Has discovered that Stiles has not yet discovered that he can order a milkshake without getting ratted on by concerned citizens if he just does it at a coffee place. Call them whatever you want—frappawhatsits, happy blender accidents, he doesn’t care. They’re milkshakes, and they’re his little secret, alright?

night revelations • Jeff Davis is an Enlightenment Writer
So anyway, if you accept that the way Davis writes is in the Enlightenment style, then you have to accept that Scott is the Enlightenment Hero, who is ultimately good hearted and tries to save everyone. Who makes mistakes, but learns from them, and most importantly to the show, is always morally correct in everything he does (even when he makes a horrible mistake and must learn from it, his heart was in the right place). He’s an idealist who earnestly tries.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Jeff Davis is writing Derek as a Romantic Hero - the guy who rejects social norms. He is the alien who lives in the burned out hulk of his former home and doesn’t trust anyone. He’s a Heathcliff whose Katherine betrayed him completely. He’s the visceral embodiment of nature in all its brutality, while Scott is the example of society with all it’s promise because ultimately Jeff Davis is a believer in the Enlightenment school who wants happy endings and uptopias and worlds without sexism or homophobia. So of course Derek is going to get shafted while Scott gets heaped with glory. That’s the story Jeff Davis is telling. The Enlightment Hero and the Romantic Hero are always at odds with each other because they stand for completely opposite views on society and the human race.

So, since we’re talking Natasha in MCU here (I could use the comics, but since it would take all day and involve my Extensive And Uncontrollable Bucky Barnes Emotions, let’s not), we’re going to jump back for a second and look at Iron Man 2. Here is some shit Natasha Romanov deals with in that movie: recoding killer Mickey Rourke robots; schooling Sam Rockwell’s killer ass; spying to the tune of a drunk billionaire in a super suit destroying his house to give his buddy a present; knocking out an entire team of highly trained security guards in the time it takes poor Happy Hogan to pull a Mike Tyson on that one dude; doing a psychological profile of Tony Stark, which, for real, WORST job; dealing with all her SHIELD orders and managing Tony and Pepper’s lives; DO I NEED TO GO ON. And the only time we see her wrong-footed, even for a second, is when Tony shoves his sorry, self-destructive ass into that race car. Pepper demands to know if Natasha knew about this, and Natasha’s response—in one of her more emotional moments of that film, given that she’s visibly uncomfortable to admit it—is, “This is the first that I’ve known of it.” She says it like she wishes she didn’t have to; it’s both almost apologetic and almost furious, indicating that Natasha hates surprises and goes out of her way to avoid dealing with them most of the time.

Covalency and Affinity: An Essay on Pairing Popularity - Saucery - Meta - Fandom [Archive of Our Own]
Why do some ships become so much more popular than others?

My one-sentence theory is: some ships fit into neat binary grooves in our minds. (Derrida-style.) Those ships are the most popular.

To elaborate, each person in the pairing is an archetypal balancing factor for the other. Take the most popular ship of all, Kirk/Spock. Kirk = Instinct. Spock = Logic. That's a binary pairing, right there. It's what Lacan would call a "dual-entry matrix". Basically, it's a psychological impetus, not only for the characters but for the shippers; there's gotta be binary action going on, there. Something to deconstruct.

When it comes to fannish shipping, deconstruction means making two seemingly "opposite" personalities discover compatibility. (Harmony.) Or, in lay terms, some kinda yin-yang love-fu. For example: Fraser (Discipline)/Kowalski (Brashness). Or Stiles (Empathy;Randomness)/Derek (Menace;Focus). Or Eames (Fluidity)/Arthur (Solidity). Or Loki (Deceit)/Thor (Honor). Or Steve (Responsibility;Prudishness)/Tony (Irreverence;Promiscuity).

See, it's about chemistry. What does chemistry mean? Incompleteness. True chemistry has to be about give-and-take. Both characters have to lack something that is present in the other. And those qualities must react to each other. Like, uh, covalent bonds. Or elective affinities. #NERDMOMENT But seriously. There has to be a mutual spark.

Hello, tailor.: The costumes and characters of The Avengers. Part 2: Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, and Bruce Banner.
From my limited knowledge of Avengers comics canon I was expecting the movie to focus more on the clash of personalities between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, but the genius of The Avengers was that it explored all these different permutations of the Avengers team that I'd never considered before. The best example of this was the unexpectedly perfect combination of Bruce Banner and Tony Stark. The most poorly-handled character of the Marvel universe thus far -- the Hulk's human alter-ego -- ended up with the most engaging hero's journey in the film.

sophinisba: A note to authors who are not podfic fans, from me, sophinisba
If you are not a podfic fan, then (no offense, but) the podfic is not for you!

We make them for ourselves and for people who like to listen to them, not for people who don't! It's true that you have a unique perspective on your story, but that doesn't mean you're under any obligation to listen, to pretend that you listened, or pretend that you liked it. I can't speak for all podficcers, but for myself I can say the idea of someone trying to force themselves to listen to my voice out of a sense of obligation makes me pretty uncomfortable.

If you want to listen, that's great! Some people never get around to listening to podfic until someone records their own work, and when they finally do listen they discover that they like it a lot and want to get involved in podfic themselves. Some people listen and discover it's not for them, and some people already know that about themselves.

If you don't want to listen but you do want to acknowledge and support people who make podfic, here are some ways you can do so!

elf: What's the collective noun for kudos?
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who really loves the Kudos feature at AO3. I don't mean, "wow, it's great that there's this option for people too busy or overwhelmed to leave a comment, so authors can know someone liked their story," because sometimes that comes with the unspoken (or not unspoken) followup of, "but of course people should be leaving comments, so if it causes people to not leave comments, maybe it's not so good." I love kudos. Unreservedly, with no caveats. I maybe like them more than comments.

Ten Commandments of Fanfic Writers
In the beginning, there was canon. And God saw that the canon was lame, and God said “This canon is lame.”

The Lord took a handful of clay from all corners of the Earth and created a figure and imbued it with imagination and skill and knowledge of html code. And the Lord called this figure “Fanfiction author” and blew the breath of life into it that it might live and be able to squee.

And the Lord saw that the creation was good and the Lord said “This author is good.”

The Lord took the author up onto the mountain and spoke unto him, saying “You are a fic author, and you are My creation. These are My commandments. Follow them or flames shall reign down upon you and fill your email accounts.”

And the author was much afraid, and said unto the Lord “…okay…”

And these were the commandments the Lord lay down for the author, ten in number. And the number of the commandments was ten, and they numbered ten. There were ten commandments.

He's out to make a pack, and for that, he needs a mate - which is why he pulls that stunt with Scott's Mom. He needs to secure Scott's loyalty as a Beta, and that purpose would be best served by having a mate that Scott's loyal to.

cobweb_diamond: THOR: Loki/Sif, for the uninitiated.
Why you should ship it.

1. They fit well together. To get where she is in life, Sif must be a very confident, self-assured person. Her goal was to become a warrior despite the sexism of Asgardian society, and she achieved that. And now she enjoys herself with her warrior buddies, secure in the knowledge tht she can kick everyone's ass. Loki, on the other hand, doesn't quite fit in with Thor and the Warriors Three. He'd rather use trickery to win a fight, and he'd rather avoid a fight than pick one in the first place.

2. They're both outsiders what seems like a rather restrictive culture. Sif is the first female warrior ever, and has probably had to prove herself every step of the way. For his part, Loki was already pretty weird to start off with: a magic-user, a wordsmith, a trickster and a diplomat in a culture that values straightforward heroism and physical strength. And then he finds out that he's a Frost Giant, part of the race he's been raised to think of as monsters.

3. You can play around with gender roles. This is a big draw for me, I admit. With this pairing, you can easily have fic where Loki is a spoiled princeling and Sif is the badass warrior who acts as his champion. Or where Sif goes off to war/on quests while Loki sits at home gritting his teeth and pretending not to freak out about it. And there are are so many interesting things to think about regarding the possibility of sometimes-a-woman!Loki, and Sif as a woman in a male-dominated society.

The Gambit Guild - Myths and Truths
Myth: Gambit usually refers to himself in the third person.

Truth: Only in X-Men: The Animated Series, where he has lines like "Gambit follow you anywhere you go, chere" or "Gambit want to go with ya, Professor." In the comics, he almost never refers to himself as Gambit or Remy in that way, using the first person pronoun like anyone else.
Myth: Gambit only stays with the X-Men because of their money.

Truth: Gambit does not need the X-Men's money. As a world-class thief, he probably has more money than Xavier. During the Assassination Game, he writes a $3,000,000 cheque to Deadpool without blinking. Thinking it is invalid, Deadpool rips it to pieces, only to discover that Gambit could easily afford it. [This should be REQUIRED READING for all X-men fanwriters.]

If a woman introduced herself by saying, "I like football and ferris wheels" we'd be calling her a ditz. If a woman were hiding her intelligence, we would assume her motivation was not to fit in with the jocks, but rather to avoid intimidating them.

If John were a woman, fandom would make assumptions about him that we don't make because he is not a woman. Or rather, the fandom would conclude that the writers were making assumptions about "women in general" in writing John. Offensive assumptions. The fact that John is a man is, well, interesting. I honestly believe John is the product of a bunch of male geeks getting in a room and trying to envision the perfect man and, being heterosexual, instead envisioning the perfect woman and then giving her a cock. I'd call it subversive if I weren't so sure the writers were doing it completely on accident.

I mean, think about it. If it were on purpose? So subversive.

mithrigil: THE SPARRING LEADS TO SEX: a Manifest
First off, "The Sparring Leads to Sex" is not "Slap Slap Kiss". "Slap Slap Kiss" is when two characters who are both-still-angry at each other decide to get it on. Slap Slap Kiss is not necessary violent, and even less necessarily combative or structured. Sometimes Slap Slap Kiss overlaps with The Sparring Leads to Sex as a motivation and spark, but oddly enough I tend to find this less hot. Perhaps this is because when it escalates to a sufficiently violent level to also qualify as The Sparring Leads to Sex, Slap Slap Kiss is much less about the physicality of the fight.

The Sparring Leads to Sex, at core, requires an enjoyment of fighting, or at least of fighting each other. At least one participant in the fight has to appreciate the fists flying.

vitruvian23: Deep in the heart of me - the tech of the Iron Man movie
The device is small, so it basically needs to be some type of nuclear energy or something even more exotic, such as matter-energy conversion or zero-point energy. The original, mammoth arc reactor back at Stark Industries looks like some kind of glass-walled tokamak, which points us towards fusion, and the central ring of the miniature version is made of palladium, clearly meant to imply a connection of some kind with the Pons/Fleischmann cold fusion fiasco. So, say it's some type of nuclear fusion - that would produce the required amount of energy while only 'burning' milligrams of hydrogen (which could be extracted from water vapor in the atmosphere, or from a tiny reservoir of water not shown, or infused in the palladium core - palladium is also being looked at for hydrogen storage, although I'm not sure 2 grams of the stuff could hold enough hydrogen to do 3 gigawatts for 15 minutes). What else can we figure out about it?

bagheera_san: Lex Luthor (animated DCU)
Lex is a typical Faustian anti-hero, a man who in his ambition and quest for knowledge constantly overreaches himself to the point of hubris. Before he meets Superman, he merely wants money and fame. But as soon as he is faced with this super-human, powerful being, he sets his ambitions higher. He has nothing but disdain for other people because he set his own standard so impossibly high: he wants to be as powerful, if not as good as Superman. After Brainiac, this goes even further: he wants absolute knowledge and immortality, he wants to be a god. Every tradition of Western story-telling, from the Greek tragedies onwards, dooms such behaviour to failure.

And Lex fails, many times. He end up powerless and defeated time and again, and still he gets up again and continues to strive for his goals. And in the end, he achieves them. And what's even better: absolute power doesn't corrupt him absolutely. It makes him save the world.

How Twilight Works - The Oatmeal
First off, the author creates a main character which is an empty shell. Her appearance isn't described in detail; that way, any female can slip into it and easily fantasize about being this person. I read 400 pages of that book and barely had any idea of what the main character looked like; as far as I was concerned she was a giant Lego brick. Appearance aside, her personality is portrayed as insecure, fumbling, and awkward - a combination anyone who ever went through puberty can relate to. By creating this "empty shell," the character becomes less of a person and more of something a female reader can put on and wear. Because I forgot her name (I think it was Barbara or Brando or something like that), I'm going to refer to her as "Pants" from here on out.

gyzym | a 5,000 word rambling essay on bisexuality. no, i don't know either.
The reason my mother thinking bisexuality was a phase doesn't really stick to me anymore: because I know she's wrong. Let me repeat that: I know she's wrong. My mother could also tell me that I am not a human being but a triceratops dinosaur, but, barring a sudden attack of breaking out in scales, it wouldn't really do shit. I would not be a triceratops. She could think that, but it wouldn't be true. I am bisexual; she thinks I am not, but I am, and her thought process isn't going to be altering my feelings toward, for example, Karen Gillan anytime soon. [I should also put it out there that, while she persists in being annoying about this, she has embraced every girl I've dated, and I know she would again, which is a big part of why her silliness doesn't permeate much. It's just that when I'm not dating a girl, she seems to think that I'm magically straight. Again: new tricks, hard to teach.]

thefourthvine: No Heterosexual Explanation Moments
As far as I can tell, there are two major categories of No Heterosexual Explanation Moments. The first is where the plot only makes sense if the pairing is, in fact, a pairing. And the second kind is where it's just not something people with a strictly platonic, UST-free relationship ever do. Like, for example, when one cop signs "I love you" to the other cop as he's being med-evac'd out on a helicopter. I am pretty sure they don't teach that in police academy courses on Effective Partnerships in the Law Enforcement Profession, is all I'm saying.

But Frost and I realized that, tragically, we just do not have the depth and breadth of experience to make a complete catalogue of No Heterosexual Explanation Moments. This is where I am hoping you all come in. What are the key NHEMs of our time? Of past times? Of all time? Educate me! Bonus points for links to clips, if they come from a visual medium.

gadgetorious: It's Not Tacky if It's Retro, Right?
Like the rest of the cast, the wardrobe for Eames tells you about his character. I have seen his clothes described as baggy, as ill fitting, as a fashion disaster, etc. They aren't. They aren't as form fitting as Arthur's suits perhaps, but a few things to take into consideration are a) Hardy's significantly broader frame (And here it was even broader than Hardy usually is when he's not filming something that requires he look like he can lift a car over his head), b) the fact that while Arthur is working with wealthy business men in professional suits, Eames is casually lounging around in tropical Mombasa, gambling, and c) Eames clothes have a very definite sense of style, that draws heavily from the first half of the 20th century, when the more relaxed cut of men's clothes was common.

falseeeyelashes: PICSPAM: The West Wing - Gender-Flipped
OH LAWD. Um, this post is ridiculous. Fair warning. And that said, I feel the need to preface this picspam with a disclaimer: I am of the personal belief that The West Wing is practically perfect in every way as is. Seasons One through Four are solid proof that drugs are not always bad if they inspire this level of creativity and awesome. Basically what I am trying to say is this: no one could ever be these characters or play them as amazingly as the actual cast has and did. No one but Martin Sheen could ever embody President Bartlet and John Spencer will always be Leo McGarry and omg Bradley Whitford as Joshua Lyman is perfection in every 'verse (and don't even get me going on Richard Schiff as Toby or Allison Janney as CJ). But sometimes it's fun to imagine things a little differently. Hence, this post, or what I like to call Tina Fey's presidential edict that BITCHES GET STUFF DONE taken to heart.

And so. I gender-flipped The West Wing.

There's less and less gun-shootin' each season! Also, Season 3 is the first season where Sam finally gets to kick in some doors. It'd hard to believe, and yet true.

There's a lot of shootin' going on this time; Dean fires 33 shots and Sam fires 11 shots. And check out the reversal in the last episode of the general trend of Dean using the guns the most, where Sam suddenly gets the lion's share of gun-shootin'.

Sam's cherry was popped with "Dude, enough!" in Asylum, just after Dean says "Let me know if you see any dead people, Haley Joel."

Dean averages 1.4 dudes an episode. Starting with Asylum, Sam averages 0.7 (Dean averages 0.9 over this same period, compared to 2.0 pre-Asylum) but he'd never had more than one per ep before Shadow.

12_12_12: Ronald Bilius Weasley: Best Friend, Sidekick, and Big Damn Hero
I have to admit that I skipped ahead to see when he would return, because I couldn't stand the suspense. And you know what, guys? Ron's only gone for 3 Chapters. Out of a 36-chapter book. And yet somehow, those 3 chapters felt longer than all the others put together--and I'm pretty sure Harry and Hermione felt the same way.

The Silver Doe seemed like a gift, a love letter, to Ron fans everywhere...To all of us who love the brave, hot-headed Ronald Bilius Weasley, with all his insecurities, his snark, and his loyalty and courage that will always overcome his faults in the end.

I identify as asexual. I am an ace, a nonsexual, a person who is not sexually attracted to other people. I am not naive, I am not just waiting for the right person to come along, I am not 'saving myself,' I am not frigid or unfeeling, I am *not* attracted to you, and no, I am not joking. I am not a robot or an alien; I am not a freak or a misguided youth. I very honestly can say that the state of my sexual organs is nobody's business but mine, and it will probably stay that way. When I say I'm pretty sure I'm never gonna have kids, that is not an invitation for you to patronize me. When I say that I've never dated, never had sex, that is not an invitation for you to pity me *nor* is it an invitation for you to congratulate me. I do not need your validation; anything you say can and probably will be insulting.

[PSA] Yahoo Shutting Down Delicious [Worst News Ever | FFFFF | /o\] by dreamyshade
On Tuesday Yahoo laid off the entire Delicious team and today it announced at a company all-hands meeting that it will be "sunsetting" Delicious, aka shutting it down, although there are no details yet on when or how, from any of my sources inside Yahoo. [...]

I'm forming a plan to make a clone specialized for fandom bookmarks, something like how Dreamwidth is a fan-friendly clone of LJ. // What are the very basics you would need before moving your bookmarks to this thing?

-- For those of you who don't follow the deliciouslymad comm, dreamyshade is a (former) delicious staffer who would come by and listen to fellow obsessed delicious users talk at length about tag bundling and code updates etc etc. This is the real deal, guys. Gather your metaphorical children. WE WILL RISE FROM THE ASHES. (Also, oh my god, FUCK FUCK FUCK. ) Some good discussion ongoing about the potential clone project.

So, I've noticed that a lot of fanfiction writers have very little firearms knowledge. That's not really something that I hold against them. Not everyone lives where guns are legal, and not all of the writers with access to firearms actually wish to go out to a range and try some out.

This tutorial is for those folks. [I will probably never write anything about guns, but this was still *so FASCINATING*]

rsadelle: Mike Carden Facts, Pictures, and Recs (Daily Treat: December 3)
Many people dislike Carden. I find him kind of fascinating. People who dislike him either dislike him because they like Tom or because they think he looks creepy. When I was first getting into bandom, one of the lectures I got about not liking William Beckett was from a friend who grudgingly allowed that I could like Bill as long as I didn't like Mike. I have a strong rebellious streak when it comes to fandom, so that probably contributed to my interest in Mike.

This was originally going to be a more general Mike Carden primer, but the reality is that there's a perfectly good, if older, one here (as of this moment, the pictures are no longer there, but the information is) and [info]riorhapsody has written an excellent and excellently well sourced TAI primer. So this is going to be three things: interesting facts about Mike Carden, pictures I feel are worth sharing, and information about Mike Carden pairings. Enjoy!

zanzando: Arthur's Job - A Series of Thoughts
I've been reading some (but not a lot) of meta about Inception, and there's one point of critique that I've come across several times:

1) What the hell is Arthur's job description as point man?
2) Is he just google-fu-ing his way through life?

Well first of all, Arthur really is a point man.

He is - most of the time - the individual who stays one dream level higher than anyone else and protects their unconscious bodies from the hostile projections.
This involves some hardcore military training, physical fitness, ingenuity, analytical thinking, and probably some fierce protective instincts for him to be a reliable and trustworthy point man.
It's also the most taxing position (in most normal extractions - with Inception this "honour" goes to Eames) and takes constant alertness and, from what my ex-military family members tell me, the ability to suppress risk-averse instincts.

But that part is not what I want to talk about.

deepsix: that's what we wanted you to think
Proposition #2: Eames leads his own extraction team.

Evidence: Cobb's conversation with him in Mombasa about inception seems to be as peers, in the sense of, we do the [exact] same work; what can you teach me about it? They're not talking to one another as people with distinct and non-overlapping skill sets. If Cobb thought Eames was only capable of forgery, he wouldn't ask if Eames had ever tried inception: this would be outside Eames' purview.

iamtheenemy: Criminal Minds Primer (spoilers for the series to date)
Criminal Minds is one in a fine line of CBS’s myriad of procedural dramas. This particular show centers on a team of FBI agents in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. The BAU is made up of agents trained in behavioral analysis and crime scene analysis. They’re called onto cases by local police departments, and decide which ones to take based on a threat assessment – in which cases does it seem like the most people will be injured or killed? The BAU relies on their knowledge of psychology, sociology and personal behavior, as well as extensive research and information from past cases to create a profile of the Unsub (unknown subject, aka the bad guy) and figure out the best tactic for stopping him or her.

The 10 Funniest Moments From 5 Years Of Stargate Atlantis - Stargate Atlantis funniest Moments - io9
SGA, for me, was less about the Wraith, or even character development, but more about what ridiculous one-liner will Ronon try to work this week. Sure, I cheered when McKay bagged the girl and when Sheppard saved someone's life... once again.

But what I'll remember from the crew of Atlantis was the funny. It's the string of clever moments (some more than others) is what I'll look back on fondly over the years. And yes, I'll light a candle to say goodbye to dear, sweet Rodney McKay — but he really, truly is only as good as the people who roll their eyes around him.

So here are, in my humble opinion the top 10 funniest moments from Stargate Atlantis.
