Ask Me No Questions - Alex51324 - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
When Thor returns from Asgard to rejoin the Avengers, he brings Loki in tow--stripped of his magic and bound with a geas that allows him to speak only in response to direct questions.

AKA, yet another "Loki lives with the Avengers; chaos ensues" story.

~LOKI IS UNDER A TRUTH GEAS AND LIVING IN AVENGERS TOWER. IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY IC LOKI FIC I'VE EVER READ THAT TELLS IT FROM HIS POV BUT IN NO WAY WOOBIFIES HIM. It's fun~

don't mean to tease you - limned - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
Bruce isn't very alert in the mornings, but he doesn't think he's ever gotten this particular reception in Tony's lab. He's pretty sure he would remember it.

It's a little striking when you've done nothing but walk through a door and someone stares at you with his mouth open before half-shouting, “What? No,” and vaulting straight over a lab bench to grab the front of your shirt.

“Tony?” he says blankly.

“I do not think so,” Tony says back. He spaces the words out very precisely, like he's making some kind of sense, like he's answering a specific question that Bruce had asked him. “Nope, not going to happen, not in a million years. Dream on, Banner.”

Bruce only has time to blink in confusion before Tony's hands land on his chest, pushing him. Not roughly, but steady and firm enough that Bruce backpedals instinctively until his shoulders bump the wall. “Tony, what the hell—Tony!” he yelps, because Tony has twisted one hand in the bottom of his shirt and started pulling it upward. “Hey! Coffee, your coffee!”

Quotidian by metisket
An average day in the life of Bruce Banner. He tries so hard to mind his own business and stay below the radar. He does try. There should probably be a cautionary proverb about the best laid plans and Tony Stark.
“So tell Bruce. He wouldn’t mind, right?” Tony pokes at Bruce demonstratively with all the fearlessness of the insane. “Man’s always angry.”

It’s almost true. Being angry takes a lot of energy, hence the heart rate issue. Being angry means wanting to do something, and Bruce hasn’t always got the strength for that. But bitterness, now, that’s anger’s worn-out cousin, and Bruce can keep it going through almost anything. Bitterness, resignation, and black humor are his solutions to every problem.

He has actually become his grandmother.

Thor Kinkmeme - Round 13
“No one important reads this stuff,” Natasha countered. A dangerous green was flickering in Bruce’s eyes.

Scattered across the table were several copies of the National Enquirer, one for every member of the team, sent special delivery that morning. Several attention-grabbing headlines leaped up from the cover:

“Exclusive Interview with Loki Laufeyson! Misunderstood Genius Tells All!”

“Kidnapped as a Child – Raised Among the Enemy!”

“I Was Mind-Controlled – the Truth About the Chitari Invasion!”

“Secrets and Scandal in the House of Odin!”

“Avengers – the Real Dirt on So-Called Heroes!”

Tony chuckled as he flipped through. The Enquirer had apparently dedicated a full issue to Loki, because that shit was on every single page. The only segments not trashing the Avengers was an article on Director Fury’s recent PR appearance at an elementary school (“Motherfucker – A Secret Illuminati Code-word? What Shield is Teaching Our Children!”), and an odd editorial in the back by one J. Jonah Jameson (“Spider-Man: Worse than Loki!”).

there's the part you brace yourself against - therestisdetail - The Avengers (2012), The Avengers - All Fandoms [Archive of Our Own]
She remembers, and she watches Banner. Watches her eat with the strange, rushed carefulness of someone who does not know where the next meal is coming from. Watches her wear her tiredness openly, more so than anyone, like she's forgotten it could be relevant; even Tony, who can whine for ten minutes without taking a breath, is deflecting, plays it down automatically. She has short nails, bad posture when she doesn't concentrate. She doesn't like sweet drinks. She's still hungry, and Natasha wonders at comparisons of mass and energy expenditure and cannot blame her, but she only eats what's been physically handed to her, won't presume further than that, and likely doesn't even realise that's what she's doing.

Natasha watches, and she draws lines and makes connections, plots the pathways and corners and dead ends. And every time, she comes up short against the point where Doctor Banner, who is not easy but is not very hard, becomes something else entirely. Something she doesn't think can be mapped. And that's wrong, deeply, frighteningly wrong, in a way she can't fully articulate.

Tony stops talking about the time his internal playback hits in. It’s kind of a little too late. Or a lot too late.

Banner is blinking silently at him, and then just when Tony starts  panic-sweating right through his shirt, she smiles gently and takes the drink out of his hand. “You should probably have some water,” she offers, and gives him hers, then pats him kindly on the shoulder before she walks off to talk to someone, no doubt someone who is a comparatively sensible conversationalist. Like Thor.

Tony slumps against the bar. After a little while, he starts knocking his forehead against it repeatedly.

“Hey now, soldier.” Large hands tug his shoulders upright. Nice hands. Nice and comforting and also somehow as immovable as stone. Ah.

“Let me kill myself in peace,” Tony tells Steve firmly. “I mean it. You are infringing on my civil rights.”

“Yeah,” Steve says agreeably, then looks over at where Dr. Banner is being quietly charming with Pepper, and back at Tony. “So, what did you intend to say?”

Push the button - Korilian - Thor (2011), Incredible Hulk (2008), The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
“Is it true that you are the green creature who threw a car at me last week?” Loki said conversationally as he dodged both Cap’s thrown shield and Iron Man’s deflector fire with a frightening ease. The evasive manoeuvre brought him in grabbing distance of Bruce Banner, who wasn’t really feeling up to any grabbing since he hadn’t managed to hulk out yet. He’d only been an Avenger for three months and already he was getting jaded. This was problematic for someone who relied on stress to access his… powers.

“Sounds like me.” Bruce said warily, trying to focus on his breathing to speed up his heart rate and trigger the change.

Loki ducked behind him, using him as a, still human damn it!, shield. “You must be a powerful shape shifter.”

There was something about his tone that set Bruce’s teeth on edge. One elegant hand settled on his hip and with a strength that seemed out of proportion to Loki’s slim figure, forced Bruce to turn with him. An innocent move, seemingly only meant to counter Iron Man who was circling round, trying and get a clear shot.

The hand lingered just a little too long.

Bruce’s heart rate started to shoot up very rapidly indeed.

“Did you know,” Loki whispered into his ear, “that green is my favorite color?”

As Loki’s lips brushed his ear, the adrenaline in his body reached critical mass and he checked out for a bit, while he alter-ego took center stage.

Tony ends up getting roped into the bee thing anyway, probably because everyone else is conveniently out of the house. It's definitely on purpose. He makes a mental note to be meaner to everyone.

He gets stung, too, on the face, right under his left eye. Bruce makes a sympathetic noise and that's about it, so Tony tries to explain to him as gently and maturely as possible that it's the most goddamn fucking painful shit-fucking thing that's ever happened to him, including getting punched out of the sky by a nuclear-missile-cum-closing-interspace-portal.

"The first one's always the worst," Bruce says, and goes back to blowing smoke on the bees.

So that's two new discoveries and it's not even noon: first, Bruce must be made of fucking steel not to hulk out every time that happens, and second, he's a bigger asshole than Tony ever realised.

We Learned By Doing - jibrailis - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
In Calcutta, the wind moves through Bruce's bones and she has to concentrate very hard until she's able to smile at Natasha Romanova. Until she can pretend she's a harmless creature waiting to hear what Romanova has to say. Bruce knows about her, of course. Their paths have crossed in the way that a monster's path crosses with everyone's, moving through the fairy tales in the wreckage and the ruin. But Bruce doesn't want to be that anymore, and when the wind moves through her bones, stirring her cells into anticipation, she thinks, Stop.

Her parents named her Bruce because they wanted a boy, and she wasn't. SHIELD names her a priority because they want a monster, and she isn't.

She's not their monster, anyway. She isn't even her own.

But then there's that strange, fickle narrative, the one they don't mention in the stories: not pride, not glory, not patriotism. But curiosity. Agent Romanova is so calm as to be angelic, but her hands move with the deadly precision of piano keys, and Bruce allows herself to believe, if only for a moment, that this will be a good idea.

She sticks her hands into her pockets and rocks on her heels. "I think," she says mildly, "you're quite desperate for the Other Woman. I've got to warn you: she's a homewrecker."

Natasha smiles.

and

How to trick a trickster.

But really, Natasha feels, the question is how to do anything. And the answer to that is simple: as best as you can, as neatly as you can, and if neat isn't possible, then get the job done and don't ask questions.

Loki is a storm in a box, all smiles and sneers and long dark hair that tumbles into her fingers when she combs them through. She's killed hundreds of people, but at that moment Natasha gets the sense that she is very young, as young as a new star, burning too hot and bright for her own good. As long as she is young, she is weak. One day Loki will turn cold, and on that day a terrible thing will have happened for everyone who has to live with her shadow in their world.

“Any more questions?” Coulson asks, giving all of them a stern, take-this-seriously-or-suffer look. Well, all of them except Clint and Natasha, who are a sure thing in Coulson’s world.

As far as Bruce can tell, loyalty is more fierce the more reluctantly it was initially given. If he’s right, that explains everything about Coulson and Clint and Natasha. "Betty — "

"— I miss you. That's why I looked until I found you."

She dug her thumbnail into the fruit; its red dry-paper skin crackled beneath the pressure she exerted, and the flesh bled over her fingers.

"Don't tell me you've waited."

"No. I moved on with my life, and just as I was starting to be okay with where I'd ended up, you were there again. In the Battle for Manhattan. And I decided I didn't want the life I'd moved on to. I decided that I had done better, and that I wanted more.

Tony is trying very hard to make sure his cage doesn't show. Maybe too hard. Mainly because it means he looks at his own crotch way too much.

Four times Bruce tries to ignore. Seven times and he’s a little worried about Tony’s psychological health. Eight has him asking about it.

“Tony,” he says. “What.”

Tony doesn't blame Bruce.

Well, that's not entirely true. Not exactly, anyway. Bruce Banner can be blamed for a lot of things, up to and including the five microwaves that go missing from the kitchen in quick succession, but Tony admits (reluctantly) that most of them are pet peeves; Steve's forbidden him from locking Bruce out of Stark Tower just because he leaves wet towels on the bathroom floor after he's showered, for example. Tony manages to get revenge here and there, though - he gets a kick out of reminding him that it's his fault Steve and Tony had sex that one time, which makes Bruce turn this really fascinating shade of green every single time it's brought up.

Luckily the zombie virus - neural degenerative viral infection, to be specific, but Barton and Pepper both roll their eyes at Tony when he corrects them, and he really hates it when they do that - can't be traced back to any of Bruce's current projects. It's a little suspicious, however, when Tony questions him about possibly developing a cure of some kind and his eyes go all shifty.

avengers assemble - 7
Bruce/Tony, a mutually enjoyable D/s encounter in which Bruce talks filthy to Tony, fucks his throat, slaps him hard when he's not doing a good enough job sucking dick, and comes all over his face.

And then the scene ends and they do a 180 and there is lots of jocular, cuddly aftercare and tender, loving kisses and falling asleep in each other's arms and such.

When Loki escaped, one thought drove him above all others: to find the Hulk, undo him, make him pay a hundredfold for the humiliation the beast had perpetrated upon him. That filthy ogre, that horrid base beast, had unmanned him, cost him his freedom. It would not stand - not without the kind of retribution on which Loki had built his reputation over aeons.

So, The Helicarrier Needs Curtains - lettered - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
It was getting hard to remember they’d fought the bionic soldiers just that morning, that the call had come at five a.m. and Bruce had really been okay with taking it—with going over to Stark Tower and taking the helicopter with Steve over to the harbor so they could take the helicarrier. Bruce had still been sleepy, and Natasha had given him this look which, just like all her looks, was impossible to interpret.

Meanwhile Tony gave him this look which indicated unflagging approval, because naturally Tony approved of people who used their bodies as weapons that could kill everyone if something happened to go wrong, because for some reason Tony thought nothing could go wrong around him. The puzzling thing was that apparently Bruce approved too, or else he wouldn’t be here.

Tony Stark’s Cottage of Comfort for the Emotionally Tone Deaf - Vera (Vera_DragonMuse) - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
So. If he had managed to find a way to satisfy his seemingly endless appetite for affection both physical and emotional with an unconventional relationship than that was great. Better than great.

Unless both of them were ridiculously smart and competent and thus constantly thinking and doing things that had nothing to do with him at all. He’d gotten spoiled having Bruce with him constantly. There was only so much time that could go by without someone noticing that Tony was keeping one of the world’s fore-leading minds trapped in a Tower like fairy tale princess with the occasional demeanor of a fairy tale dragon. And Bruce had been so clearly mind-blowing pleased to be invited back into the scientific community that Tony hadn’t said anything.

And he couldn’t say anything to Pepper since she was doing the job that he was meant to be doing. The job he had blown off in favor of a job that frequently gotten him blown up. It was a special kind of woman who could put up with his ego and self-sacrificing streak simultaneously without losing her sense of humor.

Alternative Names for Bear Claws: an introduction - yugimutos (weatheredlaw) - The Avengers (2012) [Archive of Our Own]
Steve is aware that, to a man like Bruce, he's a living, breathing science experiment.

He'd had reservations, after that first battle, watching the flow of Banner to Hulk, Hulk to Banner — he'd wondered what kind of person could ever be hiding under all that rage. Bruce's mind is painfully out of Steve's reach, and it's impossible to pick his brain without receiving a mouthful of jargon that always leaves Tony laughing and Steve confused as hell. He wants to know the mechanics of the Hulk, because Steve thinks like a soldier, like a strategist. He thinks like a man who is lining up his ducks in a row and there just happens to be a really big, really angry green one at the end that he can't quite get a handle on.

"You wanna get beers?" Bruce asks one evening. They're cleaning up the kitchen, standing shoulder to shoulder. Steve realizes how small Bruce is, compared to himself, compared to the Hulk. How small he makes himself.

Steel and Stone, an avengers fanfic - FanFiction.Net
His new physique began splitting the seams on his shirt, tearing it to shreds. Somehow, that seemed to be the best metaphor for his entire situation; because it had struck her the moment she laid eyes on him in that shack in Calcutta that this man couldn't possibly be the most powerful being on the planet. Not this soft-spoken, unassuming gentleman, racing to help a stranger.

Everything about Bruce Banner, from his clothing (impeccably clean and neat, and really, who wore jackets like that in such heat?), to his posture (always half-hunched over, his head down, arms folded, trying not to make eye contact), to the way he spoke (awkwardly, hesitantly, but politely) seemed designed to ensure he wasn't noticed. He did his very best to blend in and project weakness. But she was no stranger to such things, she who had spent a lifetime perfecting this act of meekness to conceal unexpected strength. And though it was the best she'd ever seen, his was still an act.

He didn't even realize it, she could see, but she saw it in the way his spine straitened at a challenge, the way he had to make an effort to not look you directly in the eye. She saw it in the total change in mannerisms the moment you put him in his element. She hadn't known him before the accident, before the Other Guy had been dragged up from the dark depths of his psyche, but she imagined he had also spent a lifetime playing at being the meek man, that some part of him had always been steel and stone, though he appeared to bow before weaker forces.

Shawarma, an avengers fanfic - FanFiction.Net
"Does it matter?" she verbally backpedaled.

"It does."

She could tell herself that she said what she did out of duty. It was the perfect answer to unite the group and ready them to come together when the next need arose; even Nick Fury himself would have been proud.

"Both," she admitted.

But to say that was the only reason would have been a lie. She said it because it was real. Because she liked who she was around these people, and maybe they could do some good in the world.

A hint of green crept in to his soft brown eyes as he studied her, trying to decipher whether or not his words were true. Natasha gasped in surprise when she realized that Bruce was subconsciously tapping into the other guy's animal instincts to see whether or not she was lying.

Be strong, she steeled herself. It probably feeds on fear.

“No, we’re not looking into stretchy material,” he replied, dodging one of the flailing limbs of the robot. “Why the sudden interest, Barton? You looking to upgrade your suit?”

The Widow snorted indelicately, and Clint sent an arrow down to land centimetres away from her foot as punishment. She knew how he felt about the purple.

“No,” he said heavily. “But I think we need to do something about the Hulk.”

“Hulk? What does he have to do with…”

In the air, Iron Man swung around and glanced at his giant green team mate.

“Holy shit,” he said in awe.

“Yeah,” Clint agreed.

“I take it that this time his pants didn’t make it through the transformation.”

Something happens that makes Bruce angry. So angry that he doesn't hulk out, but stays calm and proceeds to do something incredibly intelligent, precise, and shit-your-pants-scary.

See, the real person to be afraid of isn't the rampaging Hulk but the super-genius who knows how to control gamma radiation and has learned exactly where the most vulnerable parts in the body are and how long someone can stay alive under intense pain. He knows how to break a person mentally, how to prey upon people's fears and out-psyche them. He also knows that there is no stopping himself once someone close to him has been hurt.
