Tony Stark's Supervillain Name is Not Iron Man - Aerugonian - Marvel Cinematic Universe [Archive of Our Own]
Tony gets mind controlled by a villain and, even though he’s locked up all his suits for such an occasion, he still poses a problem for the other Avengers.

Sunrise in Exile - Ragdoll (Keshka) - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
When given the choice between piloting the ship to face Thanos or returning home, Tony decides: Neither. They're going to become space pirates instead.

(Or: A story about three unusual humans and an A.I learning to live together, the alien friendships they make along the way, and discovering how science and magic might coexist in a universe where they can be one and the same.)

Notes:
What you can expect from this story:

1. Tony and Stephen and Peter slowly learning to be each other's family. That's it. That's the heart of the story. Priority number one.
2. Slow burn IronStrange romance. And when I say slow, I mean like molasses. Slower maybe. So slow at times it's almost like they're moving backward! They have a lot of work to do before they can come together and the romance is, after all, only one part of this tale. So be prepared. Sloooooow.
3. Plot. I love to write it. It's going to take over this entire story at times. It's going to be everywhere, like that glass of wine that shattered on the carpet last Christmas I never managed to scrub out. Stuck forever. Not going anywhere.
4. An attempt to apply real-world explanations to comic book science. Which is actually ridiculously hard, but I'm going to do my best anyway. Oh dear. Wish me luck!
5. Alien exploration of culture and new (old) characters, including whole planets when it's called for. I intend to build a small pocket of the universe in this story, and I love world-building. This is literally going to be a space opera.
6. Endless pop-culture references, because that's what you get when you put Tony, Stephen and Peter together on a ship for months on end.
7. A happy ending. I know, I know. Spoilers! But I might as well tell you now, because there'll be plenty of angst and adventure along the way, and it's going to get dark sometimes. But at the end of the day, please always keep in mind: I am a very firm believer in happy endings.

Enough Rope - Amber_and_Ash - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
Tony can't get himself back from Siberia, and it takes the night for him to be rescued. While waiting to see if he'll die of hypothermia, he realises something for the first time. It wasn't that he failed because he hadn't tried hard enough. He had failed because he had tried too hard. His so-called team-mates had formed the habit of blaming Tony for everything because he had let them. He had shouldered the blame, let them attack him without consequence, and cleaned up after their mess, all so they could continue to feel self-righteous in peace. But it wasn't just him they were attacking, and saving the world didn't give them a free pass to be the very bullies that Steve claimed to fight against.

Tony woke up in hospital, still sustained by the relief of his realisation. Things sucked, but they would get better. He was Tony Stark, and no challenge was too much for him. It was odd how much easier it was to plot when he actually did intend ways to manipulate the ex-Avengers into falling in line. And since that was what they seemed convinced he was doing all along, they didn't deserve a warning that it would now be true.

~this was so fucking satisfying. no bashing. perfectly in character reactions~

Black and Gold - OctaviaPeverell - The Avengers (Marvel Movies) [Archive of Our Own]
When Toni Stark flew a nuke through a wormhole and fell back to Earth, something dark and old came back with her. It latched onto the only worthy living thing and created a home for itself inside her body.

Years later, in the aftermath of the Civil War, Toni puts herself back together and gets to work to set things right and bring the rogue Avengers home. Because it's what she's always done: fix things.

But through the muck and the mire, through the pain and the betrayal, through the hurts that don't want to heal, that something inside of her, which has lain quiet and patient for all these years, opens its eyes and wakes up.

Notes:
Two years late to the party and we're already heading into Avengers: Infinity War by the end of the month but I was hit by this plot some time in December and just had to get it down. It's a story of epic proportions (more than 100,000 words, I suspect), and is meant to be an original lead up to Infinity War but will obviously completely diverge from whatever Infinity War has in store for us.

Let me just disclaimer this by saying that although I've tagged this as Team Iron Man, there will be no character bashing whatsoever. This is a road to forgiveness and peace with a dash of Team Cap criticism, a healthy dose of some very loud, sometimes very warranted venting and screaming matches and a flagrant use of hand-wavy politics. And science because Toni and Shuri. I mean come on.

He doesn't spend any time at all rebuilding Bucky Barnes' life. Not a single second. Anything he does that contributes to him is simply an accident.

Kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight
The most terrifying thing that the MCU fandom ever did was make Steve Rogers a Good Person with a Moral Code. Because you can atleast argue with Tony stans and point out that he’s a fucking mess. But Steve is also very much part of the modern U.S. military industiral complex. He wasn’t responsible for the mess in Sokovia but he also believes that he does have the right to walk into other soveriegn nations and walk out again and not be answerable to anyone for the damages. Because he did it for the right reasons. And while perhaps some people have the luxury of trusting Steve’s moral compass I certainly cannot.

As someone who lives in an area that has been subject to benevolent imperialism let me tell you my level of distrust for Good White Men who Just Want To Save Me is pretty damn high. It rarely works out.

I’m not anyone’s ‘side.‘I think Tony is a war criminal and Steve is dangerously convinced that his moral code is universal and infalible. I think the movie completely sidesteps actual considerations of accountability to make it into a conversation about Bucky. Which kind of makes larger considerations useless because of course you’re not gonna side with something that punishes an ‘innocent’ person. But that of course makes Bucky more important than everything else. Which is interesting because Bucky’s innocence rests very much on his white American identity. If Bucky was a Muslim-American who had been kidnapped/brainwashed/made to kill people you bet your ass this story would have been impossible to sell.

I don’t think MARVEL has any interest in combating these tropes. I think the movies function very much as a justification for unchecked military interventions that are coded explicityly in the U.S. knowing what’s best for the world. Shifting the onus from the government onto an individual may work to show distrust in govt but on a wider scale it just means that private super-powered armies can now also bomb your homes and answer to no one.

“You will,” they say, voices certain and almost amused. “We know your beginning, your middle, your eventual end. You will have a child and in exchange for our aid that child will belong to us.”

The implications of what they’re saying makes Howard even more lightheaded than before.

This is one of my favourite moments in the whole MCU because of its incredible power and strength. This is not Captain America with his super soldier serum juice standing up to a god. This isn’t even a young man who might think he’s somehow got a chance against the prick with the horns. This is an old, old man who knows, who knows, that he’s probably going to die because of what he’s doing, but he is not going to kneel to another man like Hitler.

Maybe he did, seventy years ago. Maybe that’s why he would rather die now than remain on his knees. Maybe he *didn’t*. Maybe he fought against his own countrymen, because he wouldn’t kneel to a man like this. Maybe he’s always been one to stand up. Maybe he lost everything once because of it. Everything except his integrity, and maybe he’s ready to die instead of risking losing that now, at the end of his life. Maybe his integrity cost him so fucking much seventy years ago that he hopes he’s going to die for it now because he almost wishes he’d have died for it then, but if he’s going to die for it, he’s goddamn well going to die with it.
Maybe he’s a Holocaust survivor. Maybe he’s Jewish. Maybe he’s gay. Maybe he’s Romani. We don’t know.

We don’t know anything about this man, except he’s the bravest goddamn person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jonomancer — There Are No Superheroes in Captain America Civil...
What is the difference between what a supervillain does, and what the Avengers do in this movie?  Who watches the watchmen? Back to the question at the beginning of Civil War, how can we possibly justify letting the Avengers act as a private army with weapons of mass destruction outside of international law? Is there any such thing a superhero, or only viglantes with super-weapons? Is there any way for us, the regular citizens of the world, to rein in these egomaniacs so that they cause more good than harm?

The movie loses interest in that question before the ending, but I didn’t. The question lingers.

The events of the movie, in which the Avengers cause destruction on a massive scale fighting each other over an attempt to stop a threat that turned out to be a red herring, constitute an extremely strong argument that no, we cannot justify letting the Avengers do what they want. The Secretary of State was right: the Avengers are a menace and they make the world a worse, more dangerous place by existing.

The Avengers are the villain of this movie. There is no hero.

Keeping up with the Kardashians by drop-deaddream (PG)
A/N: Farewell, friends, Romans, countrymen! This is a general fic I wanted to write about the nature and weirdness of any scale of fame. One very specific part of it is dedicated, totally unironically, to this post. You’ll know when you see it. Thank you, radialarch, from the bottom of my heart, for being fanatical enough in your hatred to give me the inspiration to have the last word. Literally.

per Pryxis: Steve Rogers meets Kim Kardashian at a party. They have an interesting conversation about what it means to be yourself and what it means to have your image out there for public consumption. // This is not a fic I expected to like, but I really do.
“Kim, I have to be honest with you,” Steve said, and coughed, and spit it out: “I don’t know what it is you’re famous for, and Mr. Stark isn’t telling me.”

Kim Kardashian’s gaze went sharp and calculating. Steve knew there was a human being under there. “You really don’t know,” she said after a minute.
[...]
“So what’s your sob story?” Kim asked. Her brow was drawn in sympathy. “I heard about the poster thing.”

Steve looked at her for a moment and then shrugged. “My face doesn’t belong to me anymore.”

Kim’s mouth quirked up. “Sounds familiar.”

What do we keep once we are ghosts? — razorbelle: airagorncharda:...
She taught Steve before he was big. She didn’t know (and if she had an idea, she definitely didn’t know for certain) that he was ever going to get big. She taught little Steve Rogers how to fight, because everyone else at basic training treated his presence like a joke, and because she was hands down the most qualified.
Or course Steve already knew how to fight, but he knew how to fight like a big muscular person, which he wasn’t. Most of his knowledge of fighting came from being hit by other people, by bigger people, by men. You can bet Bucky tried to teach him, but Bucky was big and strong and not qualified to know what would work best for STEVE.
Peggy Carter taught Steve to fight within his abilities, within his limitations, USING his size to his advantage. Be fast, be resourceful, bend your knees and get low and use their momentum against them, and when it gets serious fight dirty.
Peggy Carter taught Steve Rogers to fight like a woman, and that is why he always fucking wins.

Barnes is now glaring at him for some reason. It's somewhat terrifying but also, oddly, a little reassuring— because that's emotion right there, which means there's still somebody behind those eyes. Somebody who seems to think Sam is being a bit slow on the uptake. "Time parameters exceeded. Mission failed."

"Wait." Sam narrows his eyes. "Is this some kind of... report? Debriefing?"

"Mission report," confirms Barnes, looking pleased. Well, looking slightly less murderous than before.

Post-Thor, canon-divergence. Loki doesn't survive his fall from the Bifrost and winds up reincarnated on Midgard as a mortal magician named Lucy with no memory of her previous life. Her decision-making skills have not been much improved by the transformation.
_____
“Do I even want to know why you think I’m your missing brother?”

“The similarities are startling,” Thor managed. She looked pointedly down at her chest, then back at him, her lips pursing. He knew the look in her eyes, the set of her mouth, the tension in her jaw. Oh, how he knew that sharp, angry, hard face. He could practically hear Loki hissing “You idiot” in his ear.

“You deny it, then?” Hogun asked.

“Seriously?” Lucy’s left eye twitched slightly. “I have at no point in the last thirty years seen or experienced anything that would lead me to think I’m a dude, an alien, a god, or any combination thereof. So yeah, I’m going to have to go with denying it.”

Steve Rogers didn’t go all in for war because his country asked it of him. In fact, until he was chosen to be Captain America, Steve Rogers actively chose to break laws in his attempts to enlist when the army told him that he couldn’t. Steve Rogers went all in for war because it was ideologically sold to him in terms that made sense and that mattered. Because the U.S. was still able to make the argument that it was the country that he wanted it to be. And to say that Steve doesn’t know about Watergate and about Vietnam when all through the Avengers he keeps talking about his lost bearings—(“they didn’t say what we lost”/”I hope I’m the right guy for the job). No, he knows. Whether SHIELD told him up front or he had to ask about it or he went out and sat in the back of a city college classroom to listen to someone about Tony’s age tell him about the sacrifices of his generation that were nothing, from this distance, but the groundwork of the United States becoming the country he never wanted it to be—with the help, of course, of weapons manufacturers like Stark Industries (the weapon you only have to fire once—that’s how America does it.)
of course he knows.
Steve Rogers would have hated the war in Korea. Would have hated the war in Vietnam would have hated the war(s) in Iraq and Afghanistan. Would have wondered why the U.S. didn’t do more earlier to interfere in Bosnia, would have screamed until he couldn’t breathe over its lack of action in Rwanda.

Why is manpain so annoying? - the chatterbox
I’ve been seeing some good posts going around about CA:TWS and how Captain America is a man in legitimate emotional pain, not a man with manpain. I think there are several things that separate the two:

1. With legitimate emotional pain (legitpain) the things that cause the pain come organically from within the world of the story. Batman’s parents were killed, but they’re rarely real parts of any narrative. They only exist to give him pain. See also a million dead wives/girlfriends/families. When an event is grafted onto a narrative specifically to give the character pain, but otherwise has no impact on the world of the story, you might get manpain.

2. The narrative assumes the character is damaged forever by it, and that’s what gives the pain its value. There is a symbiotic relationship between the pain and the heroism. The more pain he feels, the bigger a hero he is. Batman will never move past a certain stage of mourning his parents’ death (anger, it appears). The narrative won’t allow him to, and privileges his hanging onto his pain above all things.

"Actually, you know, I get it. Rogers would be an excellent MARRY choice. You know that he'd never leave the toilet seat up, would never drink the last of the milk, and would clean the rain gutters without prompting," Darcy says. She's never really considered Steve as anything other than Captain America who is impossibly unapproachable; weirdly enough, the things she finds intimidating about him as a person oddly work for her in a domestic setting. "Ugh, plus you just KNOW Barton would be the type of fucker that would eat the last oreo and then shove the empty box back into the cupboard."

"So what's your list then, Darcy?" Jane asks, turning back to look at the mold, which has done exactly fuck all in the last half-hour.

"Don't rush me! I need to make an informed, calculated choice."

Darcy looks down at her pad, then back up at Natasha. She purses her lips in thought. "You've fucked Barnes, right? How dexterous is that metal hand?"

Why do 'good guy' superheroes get a bad rap?
To quote Craig Ferguson’s comments on another sci-fi megafranchise, Marvel Studios movies are all about “The triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism.” Right now, DC adaptations are more about the triumph of brute force and cynicism over brute force and cynicism. Which is fine for Batman (he’s nicknamed the Dark Knight for a reason, after all) but less so for Superman.

Warner Brothers’ decision to go the Christopher Nolan route with Man of Steel made sense on a business level, since the Dark Knight trilogy was a huge box office success and managed to earn the respect of the most grudging of film critics. However, from a characterization standpoint, Nolanizing Superman couldn’t have been a worse idea.

The reason why Batman and Superman have remained popular for decades is because they don’t overlap. As complete opposites in theme and tone, they aren’t really competing. But Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan wanted to make Superman a more mature and respectable hero, and they did it in the only way they knew how: by making him into a darker and more serious character, and therefore edging him dangerously close to territory that was already covered by the consistently violent and angst-ridden Batman.

Of course, the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier has just proven that this strategy wasn’t really necessary. While Superman is often described as being an old-fashioned hero, Captain America was literally born during the Great Depression. Instead of rebooting him to be a more morally ambiguous character, Marvel kept him as wholesome, loyal, and old-school heroic as ever, and dropped him into a situation where he could lead a cast of 21st century characters who had spent too long in the shadows.

I’ve seen several people say that TWS is where we are “finally seeing the real Natasha” but I don’t know how much I buy that. She’s being what she thinks Steve needs her to be— jokey-flirtatious, and her brand of sarcasm in this movie is a bit drier, a bit more like Steve’s, than the sarcasm we saw from her when she was bantering with Clint in Avengers. I think she’s reacting to his signals.
Johansson has this one particular quirk she adds to Nat’s character that I particularly like, that I tend to think of as Natasha’s lizard look. You see it in every movie: a point where she goes entirely expressionless, blinks, and looks like she’s processing like a computer. It reminds me of those sort of blank looks lizards often have. Those are the moments when I think Natasha is not sure, is processing, making a decision about which Natasha she’s supposed to be. They’re incredibly vulnerable and fascinating, because they’re not always at the points where the character is otherwise behaving vulnerably: the very first one is in the scene where she piledrives Happy, when she’s introduced in IM2. She has a few in TWS, most notably just when she asks Steve if he trusts her, and again at the end when she’s disseminating the classified info.
I think those moments are the times when we actually see the most of what Natasha, stripped away, is really like: those, and the scenes with Clint in Avengers, and maybe that breathless “Don’t do this to me, Nick.” She’s someone who functionally knows how to be a person, but it’s all layers of learned behavior. And I don’t think they’ve stripped those away from her yet in MCU.

The thing is, Steve Rogers spent a hell of a lot of time getting beat-up in back-alleys before the serum. She pauses at the cusp for a moment, buffeted by blasting winds, and looks back at Peggy. “Be careful,” Peggy says, and Stephanie grins crookedly back.

“Always am,” she says, and steps over the edge into the bottomless night. Peggy has a sudden, dreadful premonition that this will be her life: condemned to watch Stephanie Rogers fly away from her and wait in the hopes of her return. A silly thing, really – she dismisses the thought at once. She has no business expecting she will have a reason to tag after Rogers, nor that Rogers will want to be tagged after. What nonsense! She will remember this blithe dismissal some months hence, when there is no longer a hope of Stephanie’s returning, and wonder what she could have done differently, and know that there was nothing.

Seanan's Tumblr | Um. Clint makes Steve and Bucky read Harry Potter. The Avengers all have very, very strong opinions about which house they get sorted into. Bucky thinks he's a Slytherin, but Steve says he's a Hufflepuff through and through.
"This isn’t a legitimate classification system," said Steve angrily, throwing the book onto the couch next to Clint. "This is bullshit. They’re children, for cripe’s sake.”

Clint’s eyebrows rose to comical levels.

"You can’t just isolate different children or—or— or try to predetermine their characters at age eleven," Steve said, thoroughly angry. "And you certainly can’t condemn an entire fourth of your school’s population to a villainy house, what the hell is that?”

He started to pace.

"As if people never change! As if there’s no moral or ethical growth after age eleven!”

Bucky reached over Clint and picked up the book. Clint gave him a look and he shrugged.

"Hell, if it makes Steve this angry, I gotta check it out," he explained.

***

"This isn’t a basis for education!" Bucky shouted. "Where are the art classes, huh? Kids this age should have access to art classes."

"Exactly!" shouted Steve. "Maybe a little less institutionalized racism and a little more arts education, am I right?"

Clint buried his head in his hands.
