Kids | Kanopy
[Austin Kleon says:

"Parents: check to see if your local library has access to Kanopy Kids. They just switched to unlimited streaming and they use Common Sense Media, one of my favorite sites for figuring out if media is age appropriate. (For non-parents, it’s also a good way, if you have PTSD or something like that, to screen shows for uncomfortable plot elements.)"]

Myblock Homepage - MYBLOCK EDUCATION
"We are a NYC-based, fiscally sponsored non-profit organization connecting schools with professional filmmakers to teach citizenship training through video education. In Spring 2011 The MyBlock Education Program gave students in four NYC public high schools the opportunity to produce videos for a new online video map of NYC. This hands-on experience led to the unprecedented creation of a deeply humanistic body of work giving the public a personal and rare glimpse into the challenges many neighborhoods and their citizens currently face. Since then, the MyBlock education model has been adopted by over thirty schools and educational institutions, included in major museum exhibitions and events, and become an integral component to the fabric of media arts education in NYC."

" (2011-2013) was a ground breaking, one-of-a-kind user-generated video map of New York City. Hyper-local videos uploaded by the public allowed visitors to both define and explore a moving city from the human perspective rather than the satellite perspective. It was one of the first websites to utilize the collective power of user-generated video to provide a holistic, organized, and immersive portrait of local current events and culture of a city. During its time, MyBlockNYC was critically acclaimed and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The MyBlock Education Program which continues today, is making the increasingly important opportunity of an introductory video literacy program available to students by providing a powerful video communications curriculum to schools all over New York City. For more information on the program, and to request a partnership for your school visit "

Norway the Slow Way -
"I eventually called Rune Moklebest, a producer at NRK who was in charge of the Slow TV programing. “[Slow TV] feels different than anything you see on TV,” he said. “If you slow the pace down... if you wait past the moment you feel you should cut away, a whole new story emerges. And then it doesn’t take much to become dramatic.” He pointed to a particular 10-minute sequence from “Hurtigruten Minute for Minute” in which the only action is a cow walking across a beach.

“Will the cow keep walking? Will it stop?” he said. “You just don’t know. And this is exciting.”"

slitscanner.js by Sha Hwang
"Slitscanner is a little piece of Javascript you can run as a bookmarklet to start, well, slitscanning videos online. This only works in the HTML5 video players so for Vimeo you will need to select "Switch to HTML5 Player" in the lower right on the video pages. For YouTube it's a little trickier, you can opt into the HTML5 test here, but they will still use the Flash Player for videos with ads."

New upload rules on Vimeo Staff Blog
"The Vimeo staff has decided that we are no longer going to allow gaming videos on Vimeo. Specifically, we are no longer going to allow game walk-throughs, game strategy videos, depictions of player vs player battles, raids, fraps, or any other video gaming videos that simply depict individuals playing a video game. Videos falling into this category will be subject to deletion as of September 1st; new videos of this type will be removed."

Videos of Harvard lectures available » [Science & Cooking Lecture Series]
"Remember the public cooking lectures at Harvard that I mentioned in September? According to the website they are *very popular* and the auditoriums are packed! This is good news, but the best thing is that the lectures are made available through YouTube and iTunes for free! So far 9 of the sessions are available, but I guess all to be available soon. If the picture is difficult to read, here’s the list of all the lectures:" [via:]

YouTube - Make Your Voice Heard: Discover Democratic Education
"In a society based on democracy, participation, and engagement, shouldn't education be democratic, participatory, and engaging? How can young people be creative, curious, and collaborative learners when their schooling boxes them in with testing and standardization? What does a more empowering, democratic education look like?

octopus steals my video camera and swims off with it (while it's Recording) on Vimeo
"while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashes towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth. I didn't feel threatened at all during the whole ordeal. he seemed to be fixated on the shiny metallic blue digital camera. the only confusing behavior was how he dashed off with it like a thief haha. cheeky octopus."

"I live in Los Angeles. I drive in Los Angeles. I think about traffic a lot in Los Angeles. A few months ago, I discovered Matt Logue’s Empty LA photographs. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but every time I was stuck in rush hour all-hour traffic, I found myself thinking, “What if tomorrow everyone’s car disappeared.”

eduFire - Live Video Learning
"We have a simple (but not easy) mission: Revolution education.

Our goal is to create a platform to allow live learning to take place over the Internet anytime from anywhere.

Most importantly...for anyone. We’re the first people (we know) to create something that’s totally open and community-driven (rather than closed and transaction-driven).

We’re excited to create tools for people to teach and learn what they love in ways they never imagined possible.

If changing the world is your thing and you’re as passionate about education and learning as we are, please get in touch."
