"Most elite American colleges are content to spend their vast resources on gilding their palaces of exclusivity. They worry that extending their reach might dilute their brand…Righteousness is easy; generosity is hard. In any event, Harvard's public-relations wizards managed to spin the university's decision to subsidize tuition for families making three times the median household income as a triumph of egalitarianism. The institution could easily use a program designed to help desperately needy students living in political, environmental, & economic turmoil to burnish Harvard's brand.<br />

The Ed Techie: Eportfolios - J'accuse [Or why we [TCSNMY] encourage use of off-the-shelf tools rather than rolling our own or spending on some ed-tech crap]
"An institution has a very different set of requirements to an individual. However, if you want eportfolios to work, then it’s individuals that need to like them and be motivated to use them. This emanates from an institutional tic, which is the need to own and control systems and data…<br />
Educational arrogance – maybe arrogance is too strong a term, but eportfolios demonstrate a common mistake (in my view) in educational technology, which goes something like “Here’s some interesting software/tool/service which does most of what we want. But it’s not quite good enough for higher education, let’s develop our own version with features X and Y”. In adding features X and Y though they lose what was good about the initial tool, and take a long time. Blogs are good enough for eportfolios, if what you want from an eportfolio is for people to actually, you know, use them. "

"Having spent a dozen years or so selling 'cutting edge' ICT tools and systems into schools, being very successful in the job of telling schools what to do and how to do it, I felt so much a fraud that a year ago I chose to spend some time back in the classroom after 25 years. I have managed to visit around 40 schools in four LA areas as a Supply Teacher in that time, and the result of my Action Research is that I have not found a SINGLE school that shows ANY evidence of using technology to transform teaching and learning. Not a single one - and that includes a whole number of so-called Specialist Colleges. I think there are some good things going on, because I have been told so by some schools in the past - or are they as good at the sales patter as Neil's shiny-suited salesman?"

"Thomas Jefferson was arguably one of the most well-educated Americans of his time. He was well-read, thoughtful, knowledgeable in a wide variety of topics from the arts to the sciences, & the founder of the UVa. The same could probably be said of Ben Franklin, or James & Dolly Madison. On the larger world stage, we could credibly make such claims for René Descartes, William Shakespeare, Galileo, Michelangelo, & Plato. But there is one thing unique about the education of all these people, which is different from that of you, me, & our children: none ever were given grades. All attended schools or had teachers who worked entirely on a pass/fail system. The model of education from its earliest times was one of mentorship, starting with hunter-gatherers taking their children out on the hunt 100,000 years ago, all the way up to teaching methods employed at the university founded by Jefferson. The teacher & students got to know one another. They interacted constantly throughout the day. "

"How do we better align grading and assessment techniques so that they are more in line with how students learn today? The traditional 'teach to the test' evaluation paradigm continues to produce a classroom experience that focuses on specifically 'testable' results. That testing paradigm is also disconnected from all of the creative, production, remixing, and networking skills that students are developing through their everyday engagement with new media. Another issue is that the traditional assessment system tends to measure students individually and via multiple-choice and written-response questions. As teaching practices evolve to include more team-based projects that involve the use of smart tools to solve problems or communicate ideas, it will become increasingly difficult to assess students in the traditional ways. Furthermore, current widely-used tests are not designed to gauge how well students apply their knowledge to new situations."

Digital Ethnography » Our class on how we run our class
"we organize it as a research group, not a class...instead of a syllabus we have a research schedule...editable at any time by anybody involved in the project. All edits are (almost) instantly reported at our Netvibes research hub via RSS. The hub also includes a Yahoo Pipe combining the feeds from each of the 15 students’ blogs. There is a 2nd Yahoo Pipe that combines all the comment feeds from those blogs...we have a feed from our Diigo group, which we use to share links & notes on the web. The course is entirely purpose-driven, so it does not have much of the traditional structure typically provided by a syllabus, but it is (loosely) structured...basic format: * First 3 weeks: exploration stage * Second 3: guided introduction to the field * Next 4: self-guided research * Due at 11th week: Research paper (followed by collaboration exercises) * Final (16th week): Share with world (video, website, etc.) Students keep a blog throughout, and do most of their “assignments” as blog posts"

"Social network sites, online games, video-sharing sites, and gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones are now fixtures of youth culture. They have so permeated young lives that it is hard to believe that less than a decade ago these technologies barely existed. Today’s youth may be coming of age and struggling for autonomy and identity as did their predecessors, but they are doing so amid new worlds for communication, friendship, play, and self-expression. We include here the findings of three years of research on kids' informal learning with digital media. The two page summary incorporates a short, accessible version of our findings. The White Paper is a 30-page document prepared for the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Series. Intelligent Life at YouTube: 70 Educational Video Collections | Open Culture
"Smart video collections keep appearing on YouTube. But rather antithetical to the ethos of its parent company (Google), YouTube unfortunately makes these collections difficult to find. So we’ve decided to do the job for them. These enriching/educational videos come from media outlets, cultural institutions, universities and non-profits. There are about 70 collections in total, and the list will grow over time. If we’re missing anything good, feel free to let us know, and we’ll happily add them. Supercool School - Education without limits
"Supercool School is a system that allows you to coordinate and hold live and interactive online classes. The process starts by creating a request for a class and specifying what you would like to learn. Other users can then join these requests by browsing through the request list, or by being invited by their friends. Once a request is full, the teacher seat opens. People who want to teach the class can join by browsing full classes or being invited by the students. When someone takes the teacher seat, he or she sets up a date and time for the class. When that date and time arrive, the class opens; the teacher and students can all join a live classroom where they can teach and learn using webcam, voice, powerpoint, chat and whiteboard."
