Drift Deck
april 2011 by robertogreco
"Welcome to Drift Deck, a different sort of city guide. Think of it as a set of playing cards that help you playfully find your own, untouristy way through city streets. It's a set of simple cues, clues, actions, and provocations to see your way about the city, looking at it from a different angle. It will make you an active part of your own romp around.
Drift Deck will help you capture and share your discoveries. You'll be able to share your journey through the maps you make and the photos you take. Share your Drifts with others around the world! Be active, not passive. Enjoy."

Serendipitor for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store
august 2010 by robertogreco
"Serendipitor is an alternative navigation app that helps you find something by looking for something else. Enter an origin and a destination, and the app maps a route between the two. You can increase or decrease the complexity of this route, depending how much time you have to play with. As you navigate your route, suggestions for possible actions to take at a given location appear within step-by-step directions designed to increase the likelihood that, in the end, you will have encounters you could never have pre-planned. You can take photos along the way and, upon reaching your destination, send an email sharing with friends your route and the steps you took." [via: http://twitter.com/agpublic/status/21619402371]

Near Future Laboratory » The Week Ending 04092010
april 2010 by robertogreco
"I came across this lecture that Bruno Latour gave at a conference a fistful of miles from the Laboratory which bummed me out that I didn’t find out about in time enough to attend because, what? I don’t have the right *subscription or *search parameters or *colleagues to notify me that one of my favorite idea people was in town talking about stuff. Or maybe it was just a closed thing, who knows?"

Interview with Ulla Taipale from Capsula - we make money not art
january 2009 by robertogreco
"Last Summer, curatorial research group Capsula embarked on the first of its Curated Expeditions, demonstrating in the process that you don't need an intergalactic spaceship to uncover new territories and make meaningful discoveries. This series of Curated Expeditions are research trips that engage with earthly phenomena through artistic investigation." ... "The object is to make a series of expeditions dealing with earthly phenomena in remote and nearby destinations . The aim is to stimulate production and exhibition of multidisciplinary artistic creation related with nature's spectacles. I have many ideas for new expeditions and for the targets of the artistic survey, but these plans are in an early stage and not ready to be published yet." ""

Bionic Noticing on Irving Street « Magical Nihilism
november 2008 by robertogreco
"There’s been a flurry of writing on the skill, innate or learned of noticing. I like to think I have a little bit of the innate, but I’ve been *ahem* noticing that my increasingly mobile personal-informatics tool-cloud seems to be training me to notice more."

Near Future Laboratory » Drift Deck (Analog Edition)
november 2008 by robertogreco
"The Drift Deck (Analog Edition) is an algorithmic puzzle game used to navigate city streets. A deck of cards is used as instructions that guide you as you drift about the city. Each card contains an object or situation, followed by a simple action. For example, a situation might be — you see a fire hydrant, or you come across a pigeon lady. The action is meant to be performed when the object is seen, or when you come across the described situation. For example — take a photograph, or make the next right turn. The cards also contain writerly extras, quotes and inspired words meant to supplement your wandering about the city."
