Tear-Aid | Cool Tools
Quickly fixes tears and holes
Tear-Aid ($10+) is watertight and airtight adhesive repair tape marketed for use in repairing outdoor products. I first found it when I was looking at options for repairing a tear in a self-inflating sleeping pad and read a recommendation of Tear-Aid from a former bouncy-castle operator. That real-world endorsement was enough to get me to try it and it has performed well for me.
I didn’t want to experiment with a liquid patch because I couldn’t be sure if the solvents would interfere with the composition of the sleeping pad, so this option was attractive. The instructions are clear and application was simple. After prepping the area with alcohol, I peeled the backing off and pressed the tape over the problem area. The tape is tough but flexible and is transparent. It sticks very well and the sleeping pad now stays at pressure perfectly.
Tear-Aid Type A is for fabrics and Tear-Aid Type B is for Vinyl only. I have tried Type A, but not Type B. My local sporting goods store stocks the small repair kits for around $10, but the product is also available in rolls or by the foot from some vendors online.
The small repair kit I bought includes a 30 cm length of the 7.5 cm width material, as well as some small patches and a length of monofilament provided to add durability in making edge repairs.
This tape is useful, versatile, and compact, and I plan to keep it on hand for emergencies. You can get it from their website but it is widely available in stores that cater to camping, boating, and other outdoor pursuits.
-- Erik Hoover
(This PDF instruction manual from Tear-Aid is helpful, and also includes a thorough list of materials that Type A and B work with. --OH

Macintosh SE/30 Repair - iFixit
The Macintosh SE/30 is a personal computer that was designed, manufactured and sold by Apple Computer, Inc. from 1989 until 1991. It was the fastest and most expandable of the original black-and-white compact Macintosh series.
The SE/30 is essentially a Macintosh IIx in the same case as the Macintosh SE, with a black-and-white monitor and a single PDS slot (rather than the NuBus slots of the IIx) which supported third-party accelerators, network cards, or a display adapter. Although officially only able to support 32 MB, the SE/30 could expand up to 128 MB of RAM (a ludicrous amount of RAM at the time), and included a 40 or 80 MB hard drive. It was also the first compact Mac to include a 1.44 MB high density floppy disk drive as standard (late versions of the SE had one, but earlier versions did not). In keeping with Apple's practice from the Apple II+ until the Power Macintosh G3 was announced, a logic board upgrade was available to convert a regular SE to a SE/30. The SE would then have exactly the same specs as an SE/30, with the difference only in the floppy drive if the SE had an 800 KB drive. The set included a new front bezel to replace the original SE bezel with that of an SE/30.
In the naming scheme used at that time, Apple typically indicated the presence of a 68030 processor by adding the letter "x" to a model's name, but when the Macintosh SE was updated to the 68030, this posed an awkward problem, as Apple was not willing to name their new computer the "Macintosh SEx". Thus, "SE/30" was the name chosen.

How To Remove a Bathtub Drain Stopper
Easy, step-by-step instructions for removing different kinds of tub stoppers
Your tub stopper is such a small part of your bathroom overall, yet can cause big headaches when it isn't functioning properly. If you need help figuring out how to remove or replace your tub drain stopper, you've come to the right place. Your friends at PlumbingSupply.com® are happy to provide you with this easy tutorial that will walk you through identifying the type of stopper you currently have and how to remove it, as well as offering tips and tricks to help ensure the process is as simple as possible.
There are six common types of bathtub drain stoppers:
Toe Touch Push-Pull or Lift & Turn Flip-It® PresFlo® Pop-Up Trip Lever or Plunger Style
Already know what kind of stopper you have? Click any image above to jump directly to instructions for that type of stopper.
How to identify which stopper you have: If your tub does not have a trip lever, it is either a Toe Touch, Push Pull, Flip-It®, PresFlo®, or a Lift-and-Turn style stopper. These stoppers operate without a trip lever mechanism and are generally the easiest kind to remove or replace since they do not require the removal of the trip lever. Read the descriptions below to help you further determine which style of stopper you have.
Toe Touch: The stopper opens and closes with the push of your toe.
Push-Pull: The stopper has a knob in the center and you must push it down to close and pull it up to open.
Lift and Turn: This looks very similar to the Push-Pull style, but you will need to lift and turn the stopper (in opposite directions) to open and close.
Flip-It®: This stopper uses a toggle that when flipped from side to side, will open or close.
PresFlo®: This stopper uses an o-ring to create the seal and spins within the drain opening to either an open or closed position with just slight pressure on one side.
Pop-Up: This style can have a trip lever or turn style mechanism on the overflow that moves an internal push rod against a rocker arm attached to the stopper to raise or lower the stopper. Pop-ups have a visible stopper in the tub drain, and cannot be covered by a strainer.
Plunger Style: This style also uses either a trip lever or turn style mechanism to operate. An internal plunger is used to stop water flow. When the overflow plate is activated by tripping a lever or turning the plate it causes the plunger to raise or lower. Trip Lever and Turn Style assemblies normally do not have a visible stopper in the tub drain. The drains simply have a strainer of some sort covering the drain.

The Best Duct Tape for 2019: Reviews by Wirecutter | A New York Times Company
We tested 10 duct tapes on wood, glass, and plastic sheeting, spending seven months monitoring their outdoor performance in a New England field, and we found the best roll of duct tape to have around the house is Duck Max Strength. No other tape we tested has such a good combination of features—strong adhesive, high material strength, and stretchy flexibility—making it the most useful in the widest variety of situations.
Our pick
Duck Max Strength
The best duct tape
Duck Max Strength sticks to most anything, tears off the roll neatly, and stays stiff enough to not flop onto itself yet flexible enough to wrap around corners or an uneven surface.
$7 from Amazon
$6 from Walmart
Duck Max Strength’s strong adhesive sticks well to a variety of materials. It tears off in a straight line, and while it’s flexible enough to wrap around an uneven shape (like the finger of a blown-out glove), it’s also stiff enough that it doesn’t flop over on itself during use.

How Alaska fixed its earthquake-shattered roads in just days - The Verge
A need for speed
Shaking from the large earthquake that shuddered through Anchorage, Alaska last week was strong enough to turn smooth asphalt roads into broken, jagged depressions of rubble. But within just a few days, crews managed to repair the worst of the damage, unsnarling traffic in Alaska’s largest city.
Anchorage has a population of nearly 300,000 people spread across more than 1,900 square miles — an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. That space is threaded by roads, asphalt lifelines of the population. When the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck last week, some of the most visceral images showed roads that had broken apart. But within days, many of these same cracked highways had been smoothed back into ribbons of pavement by crews working around the clock.
The rapid response to damage in Anchorage shows how investing time and money into preparations for these kinds of large, infrastructure-hobbling events can pay off in the long-run, even when there’s no way to tell when or where disaster may strike.

Ready Patch | Cool Tools
Hardcore spackle
Ready Patch ($9/qt.) easily outperforms any spackling compound and drywall mud I’ve ever used. I’d liken it to the superbeast that would be created if you combined the hardness of body filler with the sandability of light vinyl spackle.
It can patch drywall, wood, even metal on both interior and exterior surfaces.
We recently moved into a new home and needed to relocate a cable jack in our family room that has painted wood paneling. I didn’t want to use vinyl spackle, but was a little lost about how to patch the holes until finding Ready Patch. Smooth and easy to apply, it goes on just like vinyl spackle, takes no more effort, and in my experience it doesn’t shrink when applied, so there’s no need to overfill.
Sand it like you would spackle and it leaves a nice smooth surface. It cures up hard as a rock, though. (I’m not certain about the product’s composition, but the Technical Data Bulletin shows the generic name is casein resin emulsion; from what I gather, casein is used to manufacture plastic, so perhaps that helps make it stronger).
It hasn’t sagged when I’ve patched larger holes (like the ones left after removing toggle bolts from drywall), so it’s good to go almost immediately with no second coat. Amazing stuff. I’ve patched drywall holes 2 inches across with it and sanded/painted the same day.
Aside from the wood paneling and various drywall repairs around the house, I used it to patch the outside of the house on the fiberboard siding where I pulled the cable back through. Just a light sand, bit of paint and it was good as new.

Turning 19th Ward zombie homes into magazine-worthy beauties
The foundation was caving in and the wood siding rotted. Built in the late 1800s, the two story home on Frost Avenue in Rochester's 19th Ward had been vacant for some time.
While most people would not touch such a home with significant problems on a street with other vacant properties, Aaron Rubin saw an opportunity. That's the opportunity to help turn around the street of blighted homes into a community of vested neighbors.
For the past four years, Rubin and his wife, Kate Huggler-Rubin, have been rehabilitating as many houses as possible in the neighborhood while trying to recruit like-minded people into the area. But unlike home flippers who fix up a home for profit, their goal is to revitalize areas dotted with zombie properties and create a neighborhood.

LoE-272 Glass - Climate Solutions
A custom vinyl window is only as good as the components that make it up, whether it is the virgin vinyl used for the construction of the frame and sash, the foam CS Ultra Spacer between the panes or the glass itself.  We have been producing custom vinyl windows and doors out of our Chicagoland factory for many years now, building a reputation for superior quality and superbly performing vinyl windows and doors.
The largest part of any door or window, by area, is the glass and this has the most important job to do – keeping the elements outside and saving the energy, hot or cold, in your home.  There have been many advancements in windows, starting with dual-pane technology, which immediately starts to improve efficiency, however the biggest technological leap forward comes from Low Emissivity glass.  This is glass that has been coated with a chemical formula that lets light through but repels heat, lowering the transfer of heat from outside to in, or vice versa.
The first Low-E coatings were hard-coats, which provided an improved performance, but it was the development of soft-coat Low-E glass that gives the best thermal performance.  Our standard Low-E glass is Cardinal LoE-272, which features two layers of minutely thin silver, which can give you as much as 60°F difference in energy saving compared to single pane clear glass.  All of our glass units using LoE-272 also include Argon gas as standard, providing even greater energy efficiency.  Not only can it lower your bills but also significantly reduce the likelihood of condensation in your home, thus further reducing the chances of bacteria, mold and fungi from regular water in the home.

LoĒ² Glass
LoĒ² Glass
Who says you can’t do anything about the weather? Cardinal's LoĒ² coated glass delivers year-round comfort in all types of weather. In summer, it rejects the sun’s heat and damaging UV rays. In winter, it reflects heat back into the room.
Cardinal LoĒ² glass includes two variations, LoĒ²-272 and LoĒ²-270. LoĒ²-272 offers a little more light transmittance, while LoĒ²-270 gives a little more solar control.
Regardless of where your home is located, choosing windows that provide you with the highest level of comfort and energy savings year-round is extremely important. And choosing the right glass for your windows is the most important factor in that decision. Go beyond ordinary low-e glass. Let LoĒ² glass help you handle the weather – any weather.

The Best Basic Home Toolkit: Reviews by Wirecutter | A New York Times Company
After spending 75 hours researching almost 50 home toolkits, talking to experts about the basic essentials of any toolbox, and testing nine sets on a range of household tasks, we found that Home Depot’s HDX 76-Piece Homeowner’s Tool Set is the best basic toolkit for most homes, apartments, or dorm rooms if you’re not putting together your own kit. No preassembled toolkit will offer much more than entry-level tools, and the tools will not last forever—but if you’re looking for something simple and straightforward, this is the guide for you. This kit has been our pick for the past two years, and after a new round of comparing and testing the options, we concluded that it still offers the best value—a useful mix of decent tools at a great price.
Our pick
HDX 76-Piece Homeowner’s Tool Set
The HDX has all the essentials in a small package at a great price, making it the best choice for common home repairs and upgrades.
Buy from Home Depot
*At the time of publishing, the price was $20.
More than any other kit, the HDX set delivers on the basics, providing the necessary items without the useless filler that inflates the total tool count—and the price tag—on the other kits we tried. The HDX kit includes a perfectly adequate hammer, tape measure, utility knife, screwdriver, and hex wrenches, just to name a few. It also has one of the best adjustable wrenches that we saw in any kit. The tools come organized in a case that’s cheap-feeling but basically okay, and also one of the most compact cases we’ve encountered.
You can find plenty of kits that offer a lesser selection of tools and cost twice as much—and you can also find some that cost a bit less but fail to match this set’s overall quality. The HDX set was among the lowest-priced products we tested, and for about $20 at the moment, it’s a steal. This kit wouldn’t last long on a construction site, but for simple home upgrades and repairs, you could keep it around for years.

Gorilla Tape | Cool Tools
Extra sticky duct tape
Gorilla Tape is duct tape raised to a higher power. It is both stronger and stickier; you can use it on rough surfaces where duct tape won’t stick. I have used a variety of similar tapes, from the Army’s green 200 mph tape to the fabled Electric Boat tape that Submariners are familiar with. Gorilla Tape sticks better and holds longer than the best quality duct tape in everything I have used it for. It is also waterproof (once applied) and because of the thicker adhesive, less prone to peeling.
[I’ve been using this tape for years. It’s far superior to duct tape. It sticks to almost anything and doesn’t come off. — MF]

Must-have cycling tool
Pedro’s Tire Levers are a cheap but beloved tool for working your tire off or onto your bike. A pair on Amazon cost me just $5. If you want some for yourself, the link in the description helps to support my videos and the Cool Tools blog.
When your bike has a flat, it can be incredibly hard to pop the tire and tube off your wheel if you don’t have a tool for it.
Pedros Tire Lever isn’t particularly clever, but it works well and it’s cheap enough that you can buy a set for every bike in your home.

Solid Ribbon Epoxy | Cool Tools
Epoxy putty in solid strip cures when kneaded together
I just had occasion to fix my daughter’s eyeglasses. They had snapped at the hinge, in a place where neither glue nor tape would find any purchase, and we needed a way to repair them until we could replace the frames. For about $5 at Home Depot I got a tube holding enough epoxy putty to last for years of small repairs.
Epoxy putty is your standard two-component epoxy in concept, but like plasticene in initial consistency. You mix two strips by cutting an equal length of each and kneading them together with your fingers until it’s even in color. Once it’s kneaded, you mold it into shape with your fingers or the same kind of craft tools you would use on clay or plasticene. When it hardens, after about a half hour, it’s like rock–you can pound it with a hammer with no apparent effect. I’ve used it to make handles for broken pocketknife blades, for fixing glasses (like this time), for temporary patches on water pipes, and for a variety of other repairs and odd tasks.

How To Rebuild Your iTunes Library – Kirkville
Note: Since iTunes 12.2, iTunes no longer creates the iTunes Library.xml file, which I mention below, by default. It’s a good idea to tell iTunes to do this, so you can recover your library from that file if necessary. To do this, go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, and check Share iTunes Library XML with other applications.
Every now and then, an iTunes Library has problems. You may have tracks or songs that disappear in the library, but that are still in your iTunes Media folder. Or playlists may change or disappear. Or there may be other, inexplicable problems.
One way to try and fix these issues is to rebuild your iTunes library. I’ve done this from time to time, and it can solve some issues, and has even fixed problems with Genius.

iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit | Cool Tools
Fix your devices
I’ve had the iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit for around a year now, and it’s especially great for opening up and repairing or hacking my kid’s toys, or any electronics with small screws. When a toy breaks, especially an RC car, this is my one-stop triage kit.
It comes in a hard plastic shell with magnetic corners, and the lid is designed with this raised grid inside that works for grouping together screws and washers as you go — which just that right there shows you the kind of attention that went onto this kit.
Inside you’ll find a great set of tools for separating the layers of delicate electronics like smartphones or tablets. If you’re lucky, you’ll never have to use it for that, but I’ve done an iPod Touch screen repair with these same tools.

Duct tape without the residue
[This is a Cool Tools Favorite from 2003 – MF]
If you think duct tape is useful, try Gaffer’s tape, known by the brand Permacel (P-665). It’s the standard film industry tape. Easy to rip with your hands yet very strong. The adhesive is designed to not rip off paint. My film teacher stuck some on the school wall and left it sit for the whole day under a kilowatt of light a few inches away. The next day it peeled right off leaving the paint on and no adhesive residue.

Parts and video instruction for DIY appliance repair
If you have an appliance (especially an older one) that has a minor problem and you want to DIY the fix instead of buying a replacement or buying a repair, consult RepairClinic.com. Type in the model number and you get taken to a page that lists the most common problems. The page for that problem lists – most likely/common to least – the various things that could cause a problem. For example, for our 20 year old washer, the page told us “for a small leak at the front of the machine”, it’s most commonly this part. The part arrived in a couple days and the linked video had crystal clear instructions on how to take apart the machine, swap the part and close everything back up. Best of all, in case I forgot, the emailed invoice even had a link to the video.

3D-Printed Replacement Car Parts Are Coming | Feature | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
In the bad old days, when you busted one plastic switch on a Pontiac Bonneville, your dealer forced you to buy an entire set. Now you can pay a Russian who builds replica Star Wars guns a couple of bucks to ship you a brand-new, OEM-quality part for your old Bonnie. And soon you may want to just make it yourself in your garage.
At this point, an aftermarket car part made by a 3D printer could save you hours and hundreds of dollars, or it might simply snap in half. But just as computer-aided design rewrote automotive engineering in the 1980s, 3D printing is looking to revolutionize the replacement-parts business, allowing car owners to create precise copies in their own garages, albeit with varying degrees of success at this early stage.

Blue Monster Compression Seal Tape | Cool Tools
Stops leaks under pressure without turning off the water source
A plumber recommended this to me for a pipe that had a slowly weeping leak in it. It didn’t make sense to replace the pipe, as it was part of an old system slated to be torn down in a year or two. I installed it myself after debriding the area surrounding the leak.
The YouTube video was the perfect instruction manual...
It does bond instantly, so be careful when positioning your wraps! Six months later, it is holding up like a champ; There is no evidence of further leaking. (My photo is above.)
I no longer live in a place with a sprinkler/irrigation system. But I wish I had known about this when I did. Those tube are so fragile and they spring leaks all too easily.
I bought mine from Amazon. It is pricey, but compared to hiring a plumber, it’s a bargain.

Opening Pry Tool Repair Kit | Cool Tools
Tools to open cases and repair electronic devices
If you can’t open it you don’t own it. I like to own my stuff, so I rely on tools to help me open those not-easy-to-open things. The last one I opened was an “instant on” food thermometer, because its internal probe contacts needed cleaning.
The kit comes with a stainless steel blade and steel pry bar, tweezers and five nylon “spudgers.” I usually start with cracking a seam open on the thing that I’m repairing with the steel pry bar, but switch to a plastic spudger once there is room for it.
The tools come in a neat roll.

Review: DiskWarrior 5 | The IT Nerd
For a very long time DiskWarrior from Alsoft has been my go to tool to recover data and to fix minor problems before they became bigger problems on both my Macs and customer’s Macs. However for a couple of years or so, Alsoft had a problem. For a very long time, you were able to boot from the DiskWarrior CD or DVD to fix your Mac and it worked with any Mac. But as Apple made the transition to Intel based Macs, updating the DVD or CD became harder for Alsoft to do. Ultimately they stopped providing updates. The net result was that while the program still worked on the latest hardware, you couldn’t use the DVD to boot from it. Instead, you’d have to create a bootable hard drive to boot your Mac. Not exactly ideal. Plus the application wasn’t a 64-bit which meant that it had problems with large hard drives. Clearly, Alsoft needed to go back to square one.
Enter DiskWarrior 5. This version ships on a USB stick.

Can Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior be used on an... | Communities
KJBNomad wrote:
...My question is, can either Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior be used in the same manner on this new SSD as it has been on a disc type hard drive?...
Haven't used Tech Tool in a long time, but with respect to DiskWarrior, yes. While hard disks and SSD's are very different animals, the directory used to find files on them isn't, and that's what both Apple's Disk Utility (First Aid: "Verify and/or Repair Disk") and DiskWarrior work on, with DiskWarrior generally doing better with really problematic directories.
Note that even if you had an optical drive, the CD that comes with DiskWarrior won't boot the rMBP and you need to boot from another drive to run DiskWarrior on the internal SSD. What I've done is get a USB flash drive (16GB+) and install Mountain Lion on it by booting from the Recovery Partition and choosing the flash drive as the destination for the fresh install. When that's done, you can install DiskWarrior on the flash drive and boot from that to run DW on the SSD.

SSD scare and praise for Disk Warrior - Avid Pro Audio Community
About 2 months ago I finally got a Samsung EVO120GB SSD for my main boot drive. Huge improvement all around, very happy. In the last week I did notice a few issues with booting, that I fixed by doing a safe boot (and its associated cleanings).
Today the rig would not boot at all. I booted to a different partition (holding Option during boot) and ran Apple's Disk Utility which promptly told me it was a hardware failure. Nice. I had a clone but it was from Jan 6th. Figured I'd have nothing to lose so I launched Disk Warrior which I've owned for years. At first DW didn't want to mess with the SSD and said it couldn't even mount it. Played around a bit, quit, relaunched and it did see it. It took DW about 2.5 hrs of "churning" but it resurrected the drive, which I promptly cloned. SSD is running as if nothing ever happened.
Scary, but it's not the first time DW has saved my as*.

Alsoft Support Database - Q&A
Can DiskWarrior be used with a Solid State (SSD) Drive?
The directory structure of a Solid State Drive, is the same as a more “traditional” hard drive - they both use HFS+ (Mac OS Extended).
As such, DiskWarrior can be safely used with an SSD device.

DiskWarrior 5 Upgrade
What's New in DiskWarrior?
DiskWarrior 5 is now the one utility program that solves all of the common problems you'll likely encounter on your Mac. Just look at these new features:
• 64-Bit
Today's large disks can have large directories. Using the latest 64-bit technology allows DiskWarrior 5 to handle even the largest disks.
• Ships on a bootable flash drive to repair your startup disk
Flash drives start up much faster than DVDs and can be updated as needed.
• Includes the new DiskWarrior Recovery Maker
New Macs have new OS X startup requirements. DiskWarrior Recovery Maker updates your DiskWarrior Recovery flash drive with the latest OS X.
• Runs from OS X Recovery (Recovery HD)
In an emergency, you no longer need a separate startup disk to run DiskWarrior on your startup disk unless your startup disk has partition table damage.
• Repairs partition table damage
Sometimes the damage is to the map that describes all your drive's partitions which makes all your partitions unavailable. DiskWarrior 5 can repair standard Mac GUID partition tables when started from the DiskWarrior Recovery flash drive.
• New architecture
Updated to use the newest OS X technologies while still supporting older PowerPC and Intel Macs that can no longer run the latest OS X.
• Significantly faster
For many disks, directory rebuilding is twice as fast as the previous version.
• Recovers more data from drives with hardware malfunctions
Recover your important files from most failing drives, possibly saving you thousands of dollars in professional recovery costs.
• Detects and repairs more disk problems than ever
The best is even better.
• New Directory Optimization Index
You can tell how efficient your directories are at a glance.
• Repairs Time Machine backup disks
Drives containing Time Machine back ups can have enormous directories that were often too large for DiskWarrior 4. The 64-bit memory addressing of DiskWarrior 5 allows these drives to be repaired or recovered.
• Plus a lot more

[no title]
For years, if my Mac started behaving peculiarly or if I had just cloned over a System from one partition to another, I would head straight for DiskWarrior 4. It would look for problems with the System Directory and replace it (at my prompting). Nine times out of ten, that solved the problem. It has been so efficient that Alsoft hasn’t upgraded it in years (every time there was a new System, I would email Alsoft and ask if it was still compatible and every time the answer was yes). That is a rock solid program! So you should imagine my surprise and delight when I noticed that Alsoft has just come out with a new version - DiskWarrior 5. I had to get it.

Tech Tool Pro 4 Joins Our Disk Repair Comparison
A few months ago in TidBITS I compared the various disk repair programs then available for Mac OS X: Norton Utilities 8.0 ($100), DiskWarrior 3.0 ($80), Drive 10 1.1.4 ($70), Disk Guardian 2.2 ($70), and Apple's Disk Utility (free). See "Shootout at the Disk Repair Corral" in TidBITS-707 for the full details.
But I missed Tech Tool Pro. Micromat had announced TechTool 4 at Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 2003 for $100, but had not yet shipped it nine months later when I wrote the comparison. I didn't want to review TechTool 3, knowing it would soon be out of date. As luck would have it, version 4 finally shipped just as TidBITS published the article.

Shootout at the Disk Repair Corral
Some things are inevitable. Death, taxes, and disk crashes. One day you will try to open an important file, only to receive a dire error message. Or perhaps you'll discover that an entire folder has vanished. Worse yet, maybe your Mac won't even boot, thanks to some sort of disk corruption.
Fortunately, you have a full backup of all your data, so you just restore the missing data from your backup, and you're back in business. What's that you say? The last time you backed up was during the Reagan administration?

Daring Fireball: An Ode to DiskWarrior, SuperDuper, and Dropbox
Three weeks ago the hard drive in my MacBook Pro went bad. So far as I can tell, I didn’t lose a single byte of data. Here’s how.
First, what happened. I was on vacation for a few days with my wife immediately after Macworld Expo. Thursday 18 February was my first day back at home for a normal day of work. When I woke the machine up from sleep, everything was terribly slow. Closing windows. Opening new windows. Switching between apps. These things were all taking 30 seconds or longer. (I’d last used the machine on the airplane on my way home the night before. I noticed nothing wrong then.)...
...The best disk repair utility comparison I’ve ever seen, by far, is David Shayer’s in TidBITS back in 2003. (See also his follow-up to include TechTool Pro.) His conclusion: try Disk Utility first, and if it fails, try DiskWarrior. Seven years later I believe this advice stands. ↩︎

DiskWarrior 5 Compatible With Sierra | Mac OS X Applications | FineTunedMac
I was under the impression that DW was, as yet, incompatible with Sierra. At any rate, that is no longer the case...
Apparently, DW has (recently?) been verified by Alsoft as being compatible with Sierra:
"System Requirements:
DiskWarrior 5 supports any locally connected Mac OS Standard (HFS) or Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) disk including Fusion Drives, RAID volumes, journaled disks, case-sensitive disks, FileVaults and Time Machine backups. DiskWarrior 5 supports both PowerPC and Intel Macs started in OS X 10.5.8 through 10.12".
Edit - Originally a reply to Re: macOS Sierra, this post and the follow-ups were moved to a separate thread.

HELP! My Data!!--How Disk Warrior and Cloning Saves You | Mac Support
Introductory Pontifications:
It seems about once a month we get a "I CAN'T GET MY DATA" or "I can't find my HD," or "I can't find my iPhotos of my daughter's wedding and now she's in a coma after running into a garlic press!" question. I have pontificated on the use of Disk Warrior [DW--Ed.] and backing up your data with a bootable clone created by a program like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! I never used Time Machine since it does not make a clone you can actually boot off of. As the signature shows, I have a Macbook. If/when its Internal Hard Drive [Int-HD--Ed.] dies, I need to boot off of something so I can order the replacement, and continue ranting on the Interwebs.
Having answered and seen these questions answered numerous times, I felt I might as well document my very recent experience as a reference the next time a teary-eyed Newbie washes up on our somewhat fair shores.

What does Disk Warrior do? | Communities
...With all due respect to John Huber, who is a seasoned Forum contributor, I have a different opinion about this. I have no technical or progamming background but am an experienced longtime Mac user. DiskUtility (formerly Disk FirstAid) is an important tool for checking & repairs. It serves as a first line utility for dealing with disk or OS problems.
However, my experience has been that it detects only some types of problems . There are various third party products designed to address this area also: Norton System Utilities, TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, and others. Each was designed to address specific types or ranges of problems. While there is a bit of overlap in types of tests they perform, each package has some unique features it addresses while not addressing others. Each product has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are some Mac users who will swear by one product and berate another...

Review - Alsoft DiskWarrior 5.0 (OS X) - (May 10) | MacNN
An old friend returns, but you can't always go home again
For veteran Mac users, the mere mention of the name of DiskWarrior often brings stories of multiple bacon-saving incidents or helping in the resurrection of drives and data nearly written off from across the last three decades. There are few Mac programs that have earned genuine "legendary" status, but DiskWarrior, from tiny outfit Alsoft, is one of them. Recently the company released a version 5.0 for modern Macs after a nearly five-year hiatus since version 4.4, but in the meantime much as changed. DW is still awesome at what it does -- but is what it does as relevant now as it once was?

SculpWood Moldable Epoxy Putty | Cool Tools
Use to replace rotted, cracked, or chipped away wood
I don’t believe there is another product like this: an easily-worked epoxy-based putty that can be formed to fill large areas. Think JBWeld only for wood, and big. SculpWood putty cures in 4 hours, is very lightweight when cured and can be be easily sanded or otherwise abraded into the desired finished shape.
It’s part of a family of similar products which perform related tasks. I only have experience with the putty. A carpenter turned me onto it last year and we’ve used it since to clean up rotten and broken wood all around the house. It’s not cheap, but once you start using it it becomes pretty much indispensable.

The Best Bike Chain Tool | The Sweethome
No matter how carefully you maintain your bike’s chain, you will, eventually, have to replace it. To do this—or to repair a chain that’s snapped—you’ll need what’s called a chain tool. After background checks on nearly two dozen tools, and putting eight of the most promising examples through hours of testing, we think the Birzman Damselfly Universal is the best chain tool for most people. It’s a standout, visually and functionally: It’s more comfortable to hold and to use than its competitors, and it works with a wider range of chain sizes than most of the others, too. FiberFix | Cool Tools
Fizes leaky pipes, broken tools, broken frames, fishing poles, tent poles, etc.
This stuff famously impressed the folks on Shark Tank enough to garner some investments. It’s not different in principle from using fiberglass and resin to patch something, but it’s a lot more convenient and tidier to use.
The package contains a little square of sandpaper to roughen up the surfaces a bit to enhance adhesion (although this is not addressed in the instructions and it’s something fix-it beginners might not know), a nice durable pair of vinyl gloves to keep your hands from getting glued to your garden tools, a sealed foil package containing a roll of the actual product (comes in varying widths and slightly varying lengths, but most readily available in 4″ by 60″ in big home improvement chains, etc.), a strip of vinyl which can be optionally applied to the outside of the fix before it hardens, then removed to leave a smoother surface, and a simple set of instructions.

Catching Plaster Dust | Cool Tools
Use paper and tape to catch dust below the hole you're making. When making a hole in drywall, loose plaster dust is inevitable. You can try to catch it by spreading newspaper or a drop cloth on the floor, but some of the dust always strays around it. A better option is to catch the dust immediately below the hole that you are making. Simply take a letter-sized piece of paper, crease it across the center to make a V shape, and attach it to the wall with a couple of pieces of masking tape. Then make your hole in the wall (which can be done with an awl if your home is built with drywall). When the job is done, fold the paper to keep the dust inside it, and drop it in the trash. 03/7/16 -- Charles Platt

No Recovery drive? Three alternatives are available to you. | MacIssues
When some problems such as hard drive corruption occur on your Mac, or if you need to perform account maintenance such as resetting passwords or fixing account permissions, then you will need to use the tools that Apple includes on the hidden Recovery drive that is part of OS X. However, in some cases such as for RAID arrays, you may not have a recovery partition, in which case there are several alternatives you can use, even if you are limited by your internet connection: 1. Internet Recovery If you have a relatively speedy internet connection, you can boot with the Option-Command-R keys held, to force your Mac to load the internet recovery tools from Apple’s servers. They are about 500MB in size, so while the most popular alternative, it may not be feasible to use in all circumstances. 2. Time Machine If you have Time Machine configured with your Mac, then it may be useful to know the drive should have a fully bootable recovery partition associated with it. While this will not...

The thing is that there are all sorts of great toolkits around, but either they don’t contain all of the things I need, or they are too large for me to lug around while I'm roaming the globe. When I looked around a little further, I ran across their Essential Electronics Toolkit. This was an even better bargain at $24.95 because -- in addition to 26-Bit Driver Kit, an antistatic strap, and a bunch of other useful bits and pieces -- it also...

Say goodbye to repairing file permissions in El Capitan | iMore
File permissions problems are no longer a problem in the newest OS X release. Repairing file permissions has long been a standard practice of many old-time Mac users. Debates have raged about its efficacy, but the bottom line is there's always been a way to do it in Apple's Disk Utility app, and if Apple lets you do it it, it must be okay, right? That changes with Disk Utility in El Capitan. Let's take a look. S.G. writes: "I was just shocked by Disk Utility changes. No more verify/repair permissions option or disk? Seems like it has no utility anymore." S.G.'s talking about Disk Utility 15, the new version of Disk Utility included with OS X El Capitan. El Capitan was released on September 30, 2015. El Capitan works with Macs built since 2007, so there's a good chance you're on a Mac that can run it, if you aren't already. There are a lot of productivity and performance enhancements this time around, so make sure to check out Rene's review for more details: OS X El Capitan review...

Amazon.com: MSC's review of iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit
They contacted me a few days after the review and asked me very specific questions. There are 2 versions of this thing floating around and you definitely want the one with orange letters on the back of the driver set. The difference in quality is night and day. I am happy with the replacement and they sent it to me with no fuss. They need to get the bad versions out of circulation. They are aware of them so if you have a problem, tell them..

Amazon.com: super_user's review of iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit
Ok if you've been following this review you can pretty much see it started off ok, then went wayyy down hill. Well, after my periodic updates to this review I was finally contacted by one of the "higher ups" at iFixit, it almost seemed like a Tech God of some sort just emailed me from out of nowhere. He sent me a personal email apologizing for the experiences I have had so far with iFixit products and their customer service. He then sent out replacement tools that were a different quality of that purchased via Amazon, I'm telling you I almost don't want to use the newer set just because its that good of quality! As another reviewer stated there appears to be two different sets in circulation one with black printing on the back of the 54 bit kit and one with orange. Although there is no way of telling which version you get until you buy it, but from my experience you want the set with the orange print on the back. Long story short, all was made good in the end. I received my set of...

Cool Tools – Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) Screwdrivers
I read the recent post on Wiha drivers (they are excellent) and noticed readers are using them for laptop maintenance, but this is what you really want. Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) drivers which have a sharper cross on them than normal Phillips. Most electronics and lenses will use this head and the correct drivers make a huge difference. -- Sean Charlesworth JIS Type S Driver Set, Pollicis 4Pc $27 Available from Amazon

Cool Tools – Screw Extractor Driver Set
I purchased this set over a year ago to remove a few stripped screws in a water damaged iPhone 4s, assuming I would need to use the included extractor blade. I was surprised to find that the Phillips head was able to remove the stripped screws without any difficulty. Since then the set has been indispensable on several other iPhone repairs. The set also comes with a lifetime warranty. -- Philip Thomas 6-Piece Slot/Phil/Screw Extractor Combo Reversible Driver Set $28 Available from Amazon

DiskWarrior 5 review: The most essential drive maintenance and repair tool gets even better
I’ve said it countless times: it’s not a question of if you will lose data, but when. Media, such as hard drives, eventually fails. Or you can make the kind of mistake that results in deleted folders or erased disks. And files can simply get corrupted. There are two things you need to do to ensure you don’t lose data: back up your files regularly, and use software to diagnose and correct problems before they become serious.

Save your Mac's hard drive with DiskWarrior 5
Of all the tools you can keep in a Mac utility toolbox, one of the most important involves whatever you'll use to recover data from a failing or messed up hard drive. And the tool I always go to first when I'm having drive troubles is Alsoft's DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior 5 is now available, so let's take a look at what's new.
I'll admit that for a while, I'd given up hope that Alsoft was ever going to upgrade DiskWarrior with a new version — after all, version 4 debuted in 2006, when Intel Macs were still a novelty, and had only been incrementally updated over the years. Fortunately that changed in December, when Alsoft began shipping DiskWarrior 5.
What took so long?

Automotive Diagnostic App Wants to be Shazam For Your Car
If you’ve ever heard an unsettling noise coming from your old rustbucket of a car, but you didn't have a clue what it could be, listen up. A new app called ClingClanger hosts a library of automotive failure noises, so car owners can try to match their broken car’s sound to help diagnose issues before visiting the mechanic. George Salvat, president of Noise Tech, developed the ClingClanger app and free website to give car owners a better understanding of their car’s state of disrepair. “We’re trying to put the power back in the hands of the car owner, and help them make better choices at the repair shop,” said Salvat in a statement. You might be wondering how Noise Tech went about gathering the dozens of possible sounds that a broken car can make. Where to find a car in such shambles that it could provide noises of a failing transmission, failed water pump, corroded ball joints, and bad shocks? “We’d get multiple vehicles from our partner at a junkyard,” Salvat told Automobile. When...
