The latest Matchbox 5-packs celebrate the Autobahn, Rescue vehicles, and I guess the August Holiday Season – theLamleyGroup
Keep your eyes open for the latest Matchbox 5-packs. One I think most of you will want, another will be gobbled up by emergency and Subaru collectors, and the last I think will stick out like a sore, but festive, thumb.
Nerdilicious member and RCR @hw_jay found all three tonight at Target, and sent over some pics...
The holiday pack is actually pretty cool, but a little early. Who honestly cares though? Those of us who want it will get it, and I am sure more will sell as the weather gets colder. The Rescue pack is a must because of the Subaru. The others go in the donation pile.
But that Autobahn set. Wow, that is nice. That is a true 5-for-5 when it comes to my collection. Seeing the Volvo V60 and Lamborghini LM002 return after a short absence is great, but I am particularly keen on seeing two 2007 Hall of Famers, the Audi R8 and Bentley Continental GT. It is a tremendous pack. Look for them, obviously, at Target.

Bugatti Divo, Alfa Giulia, C8 Corvette & More. Check out the 2020 Matchbox New Model Lineup. – theLamleyGroup
I think it is safe to say this lineup of 2020 New Models is loaded. Abe & the Matchbox Team dropped several hammers during the Sneaks Presentation at the Gathering last night, and it was pretty awesome to see.
I live-streamed the presentation, which is below, and took some quick footage of the display cases afterwards. More in-depth videos are coming as well. Thanks to the Matchbox Team for sharing...

The History of the Hot Wheels & Matchbox Z cars, by Doug Breithaupt of Tales of Toy Cars – theLamleyGroup
Let me introduce you to Doug Breithaupt. I have known of Doug since my early days of collecting, when I was a frequent visitor to MCCH, the Matchbox forum to visit at the time. Doug not only shared his vast knowledge on Matchbox there, but on all kinds of diecast, from popular brands like Hot Wheels to far more obscure brands.
Doug has since moved his site Tales of Toy Cars to Facebook, and it truly is a must-follow for any diecast collector. I noticed that he had done a comparison on the new Hot Wheels 300ZX with the old casting, and I shared it on my Facebook page. The response made me think that I should share more of Doug’s knowledge here, and he was happy to oblige.
I am hoping this is the beginning of several features that Doug shares with Lamley Readers here on the blog. But to truly share in his knowledge, following his Facebook Page is imperative.
So we start with a history of the Z from Hot Wheels and Matchbox. Let’s see where we go after that.
Thanks Doug. Everyone enjoy the article...

Matchbox starts 2019 fantastically with the Blue Highways 5-pack – theLamleyGroup
Now THIS is a 5-pack! Maybe the most loaded 5-pack in the last 5-6 years from the orange brand. Not a weak one in the bunch. Better yet, some of the best. The SLR McLaren, for example, has never looked better.
Matchbox has released the first two packs of 2019, Blue Highways and MBX Construction, and I felt both were worth buying. I already mentioned why I snagged the first, but Construction had the Stepside, and that is ALWAYS a no-brainer. So two videos for you today. Enjoy.

The Matchbox BMW X5 9-pack exclusive is the latest to join a very cool emergency family. – theLamleyGroup
My guess is a lot of you have seen this pack in stores...
I have always been a fan of the Matchbox BMW X5, which has two versions...
Police/Emergency and stock. I like both, but the police version takes the cake. Matchbox has released only a few over the years, but with their Euro-centric liveries, they are always cool. Here are all of them...

A look at the brand new Matchbox Honda S2000 and its Vtec engine. – theLamleyGroup
Didn’t think I would skip the pics, did you?
The new Matchbox Moving Parts models – basic and premium – deserve a lot of attention, and I am going give them just that. There are so many models I like, but I think these two brand models are a good place to start:
Let’s go with the S2K first.
I am a huge fan of the Hot Wheels S2000, heavily modified and all. I am also super stoked that Matchbox did a stock version. The S2K has entered the realm of more classic than current, and a fantastic choice by Matchbox.

The first Matchbox 5-pack for 2019 is out, and boy is it nice. Called Blue Highways, and found by collector @Diecast58, who posted it on Instagram...
Dang that’s nice. I am particularly fond of the SLR McLaren with black 5-spokes, as well as that yellow Camaro. Heck they are all great.

The Matchbox 1985 Porsche 911 Rally Toy Fair model offers another glimpse into 2019. – theLamleyGroup
How about this beauty?
Mattel’s Toy Fair is happening now. Vendors from retail chains are at Mattel’s Design Center previewing 2019 product from all their brands, and that includes Matchbox and Hot Wheels. Of course, for we collectors, “Toy Fair” can create confusion, making it sound like a toy show or convention. It is, but not for the public. And believe me, I’ve asked to attend to give folks a look at how the Toy Fair goes. But considering much of this product is not ready for the public yet, I am still at home.
But we still get a small preview. Brand Orange and brand Blue create a little swag for Toy Fair attendees to take home. The Toy Fair models are a nice gift, but also a permanent example of what to expect from the brand. And that is what the Matchbox Porsche 911 Rally is. A preview of 2019. And based on that, 2019 is going to be a fantastic year.

How about that Matchbox Toy Fair Porsche? – theLamleyGroup
Matchbox dropped this on Instagram today...
That is the 2019 Toy Fair Porsche 911 Rally by Matchbox. A bittersweet image to be sure.
Why bittersweet? The sweet is easy. That casting is fantastic. We saw it previewed at the Gathering, and here is the first image of the Porsche complete.
Except we won’t see this one available to the general public. That is the bitter part. This is a promo model used by Mattel to promote the brand to retailers. The next two weeks is the Mattel Toy Fair. It may sound like a cool toy show, and it is, but it is closed to the public. The Mattel Toy Fair is an event for retailers. They fly into California, and Mattel pulls out all the stops to promote each toy line for 2019. That includes Hot Wheels and Matchbox, and there are giveaways.

The next great Matchbox Era is in full swing with the return of opening-parts models. – theLamleyGroup
This truly is nuts. I am showcasing two Matchbox models with opening doors. To some, this means nothing. And that is ok. If I am being totally honest, opening parts never have done much for me personally as a diecast collector.
But this is significant. Really significant. And it is part of a very interesting evolution over the last five years. The current Matchbox Team has revisited all options when it comes to making the brand better, and it is quite phenomenal to see what has transpired.
If you have only been collecting for a few years, you may not be aware of the zigs and zags the Matchbox brand has taken this century. The brand known for realism has always had to be “what Hot Wheels is not” since Mattel bought it, and that has been defined in all kinds of ways over time.

Saturday Showcase: Matchbox & Hot Wheels Audi RS6 Avant (with a sneak peek) – theLamleyGroup
Summer is a time for wandering, house projects, and doing nothing. It seems Saturday Showcases take a back seat to all.
But I got to do one this week, and it is one I quite like. Quite like a lot. The Hot Wheels ’17 Audi RS6 Avant is an instant hit, especially with its debut as a Super, and it is a perfect companion casting to the 2004 RS6 done by Matchbox. So I went through them both.
And included a look at the next release from Matchbox. It’s a good one. Enjoy...

Just Unveiled: Matchbox Gathering Datsun 510 Dealer Model & Ford Skyjacker Superduty F-350 Dinner Model – theLamleyGroup
Attendees at the 2018 Matchbox Gathering of Friends were just given their Dinner Model (with some getting the early registrant variation), and soon after Jim Gallegos unveiled the Dealer Model. Jim was kind enough to allow me to photograph the models beforehand, so you are getting a look along with everyone here.
The Dealer Model, given to those who purchased table space at the Toy Show tomorrow, is the 1970 Datsun 510 Rally. The Dinner Model, given to those attending tonight’s dinner presentation, is the Ford Skyjacker Superduty F-350. And, as always, the first 75 folks to register for the dinner earlier this year are given a special 1-of-75 variant. This year’s variant is an unpainted zamac version.

A Tale of Two: The Hot Wheels 2017 Ford GT paired with Matchbox’s 2005. – the Lamley Group
I’ve done this before, but this time it is even better.
When Hot Wheels released its Ford GT in grey last year, I was instantly reminded of one of my favorite Matchbox models, the Superfast ROW Ford GT released in 2006. So I took some pictures...
But this one makes even more sense. The 2018 recolor of the Hot Wheels Ford GT comes in simple red with white stripes, and it is perfect homage to the 2005 Ford GT.

Lamley Daily: 2018 Matchbox BMW i8 – the Lamley Group
Model: Matchbox BMW i8
Line: 2018 Matchbox Mainline
Where to get it: Hitting stores this summer.
Why it will be in the collection: Here is the (essentially) finished Matchbox BMW i8. Somewhat expected after the release of the i3, but exciting nonetheless. From what I understand, the BMW i8 has been on designer’s wish lists for awhile, but how to execute the model has been the problem.
Well the Matchbox Team figure it out, and it is nice to see it finished, and how great it looks. The blue trim pops right off the black body, just like the i3, and the details and unique lines are there as well.

Digging into the Matchbox Jurassic World models (and variations!) with David Tilley – the Lamley Group
Jurassic Fun, by David Tilley
As the silent partner in Lamley, I don’t tend to post very much here. But occasionally something comes along that just warrants a mention from me. Case in point, Matchbox have just released some great Jurassic World models. In the US the standard series is available in multiple stores, but the Legacy Collection is a Target exclusive. In the UK both have so far appeared at Smyths toy stores, although with Asda UK following the Walmart direction, I have a feeling the Legacy Collection may be a Smyths exclusive in the UK.

Here is how the Matchbox BMW i8 is coming along. – the Lamley Group
It was definitely a crowd-pleaser when it was announced last July. When the Matchbox Team unveiled its plans for 2018 at last year’s Gathering of Friends Convention, there was a lot to get excited about. The BMW i8 was in the middle of it all.
First off, after Matchbox debuted the i3 in 2017, the i8 seemed like a logical next step. Both unique cars with unique silhouettes, the i3 and i8 needed to be together. So announcing the i8 for 2018, collectors were both not surprised and ecstatic. It needed to be done. Second, the Matchbox Team announced two versions. One basic version and another with opening doors.
We haven’t seen the opening door version – but I’m told the opening parts models are coming along nicely – but the basic version is on its way and will be here soon. In fact, the Matchbox Team teased the finished product in IG...

Battle of the Baby Bimmers: Hot Wheels BMW M2 vs Matchbox BMW 1M – the Lamley Group
If I could have any car – real car, not toy car – what would it be?
I get asked that a lot. Many times by you diecast nerds, but also by a lot of non-diecast nerds who know I am a diecast nerd. And in all honesty I have no idea. I know what cars I would put in my garage if I were a Jay Leno-like collector, but I’m not. That is probably why I’m a diecast collector. Lots of cars, minimal space.
Back to the real cars. Considering all the factors – classic vs new, project vs low maintenance, fun-to-drive vs fun-to-look-at, among many – there have always been a few cars on my list. I won’t get into all of them now, but the BMW 1M is one of them.
I don’t know what put the 1M on my favorites list. It might have been Jeremy Clarkson’s reaction to driving it, or maybe it was the Matchbox release. Needless to say, I’d love to have one in the garage.
I probably won’t have on in the garage, so the Matchbox will do just fine. I have a nice collection, including a prototype won at a Gathering charity auction, and am happy to have them. And I am happy to start a Hot Wheels BMW M2 collection alongside it.
Both castings represent their real counterparts well, and both are musts for me. The real-life M2 doesn’t bring the excitement that the 1M does, but I am sure happy to see it in diecast form. The casting is stellar.

Matchbox is throwing us three dark grey SUV’s. I think I like this Mazda CX-5 the best. – the Lamley Group
I have never stopped in my tracks when a Mazda CX-5 has driven by. No lowering of the sunglasses while that Ferris Bueller “Oh yeah” music plays. It is just another car on the road. Actually, Mazda has done some nice looking ordinary cars, and the CX-5 qualifies as nice-looking compared to other small crossovers, but let’s be honest: I don’t write about crossovers that much.
That being said, Matchbox is throwing us a Mazda CX-5, and it is fantastic. I am excited about something pertaining to a modern crossover, even if it is a toy car.

Lamley Daily: Matchbox Superfast Range Rover Sport – the Lamley Group
Model: Matchbox Range Rover Sport
Line: 2006 Superfast
Where to get it: It pops up occasionally on ebay
Why it’s in the collection: I don’t have all the Matchbox Range Rover Sports, but I have most. This is one of my favorites of the bunch, mainly because of the color. It gets full tampo treatment because it is Superfast, Matchbox’s premium line at the time, and sits on what were only Superfast wheels during that time as well.
Considering this is an RR Sport, lower profile tires would have worked better, but I like this utility look for the model. It looks more RR off-road than RR Sport. This casting was never spot on, but there are some nice releases. This is up there.

I don’t know what to think about the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. I do know I am going to collect the Matchbox version. – the Lamley Group
When the Matchbox E Assortment appears later this spring, there will be a few models to talk about. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe will certainly be one of them.
There are a million angles to take on this model. The first is the actual car. Honestly, I’m a little meh. I see where Mercedes is going with this one, and I get it, but meh. I think I would just get a sporty MB sedan instead. But it is a car leading an automotive trend, so…

Of all the 2018 New Models announced by Matchbox, one has gotten the most attention. Or at least its the model I’ve gotten the most questions about. It’s the BMW i8, and now we have our first look, posted by the Matchbox Team on IG...
Don’t pay attention to the color or interior. This is an early prototype, and obviously forest green isn’t the color of choice. There is more to learn, especially how the graphics will be done. For now, ogle away.

Lamley Daily (Preview Edition): 2018 Matchbox ’17 Honda Civic – the Lamley Group
Model: Matchbox ’17 Honda Civic
Line: 2018 Mainline
Where to get it: Coming this spring.
Why it’s (going into) the collection: Well, it’s a realistic Matchbox, so of course it is going into the collection.
I think the last Honda done by Matchbox was the Insight, and my guess it’s days are done. The Ridgeline keeps on truckin’, but the old Type R hasn’t been seen for awhile. So a new Honda is most welcome. And a nice one at that.
First off, kudos to Matchbox for making the Civic somewhat small. Hot Wheels and Matchbox can’t totally commit to scale, but both brands seem to be doing the best they can to separate the small cars from the big cars (notice I didn’t say vehicles, as a truck will never sit in the right scale compared to a car). We have seen it with two Hondas especially. Hot Wheels’ City Turbo and now this Civic.
Add to that a great color and nicely done details. This is a no-brainer Matchbox.
Look for it in 2018 Mix C.

Model: Matchbox Cadillac CTS Coupe
Line: 2011 First Editions 10-pack Exclusive
Where to get it: It pops up occasionally on ebay
Why it’s in the collection: Matchbox did something unique in 2010 and 2011. They produced two Cadillac CTS models in back-to-back years, and both were CTS outliers.
We are so used to that Cadillac look now, but I remember how different the CTS looked from other cars when it was released. So unique in fact that one was used in one of the Matrix sequels. It since went through a few updates, but the most unique looks definitely belonged to the Wagon and Coupe. And, incidentally, Matchbox did them both.

Lamley Preview: The fantastic Matchbox Chevrolet Trucks 100 Years Walmart Exclusive Assortment – the Lamley Group
Now it feels like we are finally getting underway with Team Orange in 2018. After what was clearly a strong 2017 (Lamley Awards Poll coming), it seems that 2018 has been very slow to start. We had a strange 2018 A Assortment, which was essentially a “Best of 2017” mix with no 2018 models. And B hasn’t shown anywhere.
That is finally changing. B should hit very soon, and so should the latest Walmart exclusive set, Chevrolet Trucks 100 Years. The 6-car…er, 6-truck set…should hit the pegs anytime. And it’s great, from art to model execution to the surprising inclusion of a brand new tool. The pics are done, and will post soon. Model: Matchbox Volvo C30

Where to get it: Search “Volvo C30” on eBay and hope.
Why it’s in the collection: This is one cool little Volvo. Then again, most little Volvos are cool. Matchbox has produced a nice group of Volvos, from classic to large to small. The C30 was one of the most out-there choices to be sure.
Volvo’s hatch is unique in looks, but not enough to garner a ton of attention, yet Matchbox still created the casting in 2007. And a small group of collectors have loved it since. It hasn’t been seen in years, but it had a nice run of colors. None beats this one in white.

Matchbox starts 2018 with a new premium wheel and a new premium line – the Lamley Group
(UPDATE! The Globe Travelers are now available at Wheel Collectors at this link.)
This was a surprise. A couple of weeks ago a few Matchbox collectors made their way to the York Toy Show and were very surprised to see the brand new Globe Travelers Premium Series from Matchbox. No one, including Abe Lugo at Matchbox, knew they had been released.
I still don’t know if they have. Mattel distribution can get a little wonky, and sometimes some sellers get things a little early. That made for quite a treat for those that came across them at the Toy Show. One of those was Jeff van Leliveld (aka @3inchdiecastbliss on IG). If you don't know it already I have a liking for the 1969 Camaro bodystyle, yet I do not collect all of them out there as some are not so well-done compared to others. A bit of a surprise was Matchbox releasing this 1969 coupe in 2004, seven years after the SS396 convertible appeared and during the dark times of the Hero City-era. Since then it has made most of its appearances in the Superfast line with occasional appearances in multi-packs. the Lamley Group: Finished! We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
I honestly can't speak for other collectors, but for me being a collector means being organized. Collections can get so easily out of control, and an overwhelming collection means anxiety. So the last few weekends have been most welcome.
I have documented it a lot on Facebook and Instagram, but I needed an overhaul. Badly. Not just for my own well-being, but for the sake of the blog as well. I love showcasing new stuff, but I enjoy the features on older stuff as well, and when it is hard to access what you want to show, doing the features I want becomes difficult.

Two Lane Desktop: Comparison: Matchbox Land Rover set
Like Jeep Land Rover is a part of the Matchbox line and still is after all these years, but unlike Jeep the Land Rover is more true to Matchbox because both share roots from Great Britian, so it was fitting to see the new 6-truck set dedicated to Land Rover last year. This set includes a wide range of trucks from urban-based SUV's to rough and tumble Defender's. The Evoque was profiled here last year and continues here in the line with a much darker orange paint. It joins alongside the first front-wheel drive Land Rover the Freelander in blue with a racing deco. The Discovery continues to be an increasingly popular casting and here it goes for a police outfit in silver dedicated to Britian. The other three are pure Defenders, with the new Ninety arriving with a tooling update that makes the roof all-metal now in a clean red with blacked-out wheels. The Defender 110 arrives in green like its 2005 release, yet here it also gets a retool to a narrower body with part of the roof now plastic, along with black rims and black hood decal. The SVX goes for the gut with a dark green paint with dark gray wheels that have a hint of green in them. This is the only truck here that is completely topless and offers excellent details. Time to see which one's the best.

Two Lane Desktop: Matchbox 1971 Nissan Skyline 2000GTX and Hot Wheels Nissan 2020 Vision Concept
One of the biggest turn-arounds for popular diecast in recent has to be the Nissan GTR. Before all the hype only a certain few would know about the car and would lust over the casting, yet there was not that high of a demand to warrant countless replica's of the GTR's in various generations. Now that the JDM bug has hit the diecast world GTR's are now a common sight and despite being common some of them command a higher price, not to mention being hard-to-find in retail stores. Matchbox is one of the latest companies to get in on the GTR hype with the classy 1971 Skyline 2000 GTX, while Hot Wheels jumped in on the popularity early (and most likely started the JDM craze) and now has decided to look into the future of the GTR with the 2020 Vision concept.

the Lamley Group: Matchbox doesn't always do Camaros, but when they do...
One of those drop-the-mic type moments for Matchbox. They have these every once in awhile.
It probably isn't fair to compare Hot Wheels and Matchbox Camaros. Actually, it is fair. They are both $1, and while the output from each might reflect the branding, I know which one I prefer.
Camaros and Hot Wheels just go together. There may not be a more hand-in-hand combo than those two. The '67 Camaro is the most iconic of all Hot Wheels designs since the beginning, and there are far more years WITH a new Camaro casting than without.
But that long history of Camaros also means a strong connection to Hot Wheels staples - i.e. large rear wheels. The Hot Wheels Camaro castings from old to new have almost all had large rear wheels. It gives them that classic rake, but also means they become, from a design sense, a one-trick pony. They can look the same, and blend from one to the other. Think about all the versions we have seen of the latest generation Camaro, from the Concept to ZR1 to Special Edition to 2016 to who knows what others. And try to separate them.

How cool is this: two cool Lamborghini's from one of the first mid-engine sports cars for the company, and one of my favorites the Miura. Matchbox has had their version competely retooled from the original Superfast version in 2011, but this latest release in the 2017 Best of World is got to be the best one. While Kinsmart moves in on the classic after doing several versions of the new-age Lamborghini so it was time for me to check one out in the only recolor that I don't have for the Matchbox version: green.

For 2017 the Mercedes-Benz name finally returns to the Matchbox and Hot Wheels line after nearly a decade's absence. The reason for the absence: Mattel's refusal to put those chrome Daimler copyright decals on the packaging. Well I guess M-B has relaxed the sticker requirement as the brand is now back at Mattel. One of the sleekest Mercedes in the lineup is the one that started the four-door coupe sedan craze the CLS.

the Lamley Group: Whether you like the real car or not, there is no denying the Matchbox BMW i3 is darn cool.
I like the BMW i3. I know in some circles that is a blasphemous thing to say, but I think it is pretty cool. It is unique to say the least, and I am cool with anything forward thinking like the i3 is.
But I know many of you disagree. You don't like its looks, its preformance, what it represents. That is fine too.
Hopefully, though, we can all agree that the new Matchbox BMW i3 is awesome. The Matchbox Team sent the completed FEP over for a preview, and I can honestly say I am way stoked with this one.
Matchbox at its best releases a variety of vehicles, from sports cars to utilities vehicles to emergency to classics, and everything in between. And mixed in might be that unique street car that may not get us giddy like say a Datsun 510, but makes for a great model nonetheless. Think Prius Taxi for example.
The i3 surely fits in that category. Pick a unique car and replicate it well. That is what Matchbox did.

the Lamley Group: UK Collectors, Modelmatic now has 2017 Matchbox Best of World in stock.
Just a quick heads up that UK-based diecast seller Modelmatic has 2017 Matchbox Best of World in stock.
If you need a reminder, this is the 6-car set released late last year, and some of the models are sporting Hot Wheels Real Riders. The Lamborghini Miura is the must-have, but there really is no slouch in the bunch.
Grab them at Modelmatic here, and be sure to check out the huge variety of diecast available in the store.

the Lamley Group: The trispoke Matchbox Miata has been found! Only it is the 2017 version.
Ah, the trispoke Miata. The model that never was.
If you remember, last year Matchbox debuted the new Miata casting on their Instagram feed...
All looked good, and the collectors were happy. Except for those wheels. The consensus was that the red model would look better with lower profile wheels, and in a very cool move, the Matchbox Team went back and changed the wheels to the more modern 5-spokes.

the Lamley Group: Hello Again! Matchbox brings back the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
It is nice to see an old friend. Among the preview models the Matchbox Team sent over was this flat gray VW Golf GTI. It seemed it has been awhile since we had seen it, and sure enough, 7 years. 7 years!
The VW Golf seems like it should be a Matchbox mainstay. Sure, we say that about a lot of models, but the granddaddy of the hot hatch should always have a place. And even if we are a couple generations past this version, it is still nice to see on the pegs.
So a most welcome return, especially for a Golden Age favorite. Since it has been awhile, and because this is a model that I have enjoyed collecting, let's do a Cool Car Update. Below are all releases of the Golf, sans anything with cartoon characters on it (I know there has been at least one).

the Lamley Group: This is a big pile of diecast
This is what my office looks like right now.
Since moving to a new house last year, I have wanted to bring my new office back up to the standard of the last. That means blue walls to contrast nicely with my white Carney displays, and even more display space.
I have also added an area to shoot YouTube features, and while I loved my Matchbox store display as a background, it just took up too much space.

the Lamley Group: ToyCarMag is a clever and very cool take on storing diecast cars...
I am in the process of reorganizing my office. I miss the blue walls of my old office, so painting is in order. I also am going to change the background of the videos I do, as well as create more display space on the wall.
One think I hope the reorganization will do is create some more storage space. My Carney wall displays do great in both the display and storage department, but even then I find my desk is always covered in cars, waiting to be photographed or put away. It is a constant shift of cars from one surface to the next.
My wife is an organization guru, and my desk full of cars drives her batty. For awhile now she has admonished me to use the walls to help keep my desk clear. I was constantly getting links from her showing me shelving options.

the Lamley Group: The Matchbox Subaru WRX STI Police is a great addition to the fleet, but not all is right...
Matchbox police cars are a mixed bag for some of you. There are so many cars out there that collectors want to see get the "Matchbox Treatment", meaning realism compared to the more racing and modified style of Hot Wheels.
So when you say Subaru is doing the latest WRX STI, there is bound to be excitement. It gets a little mixed when you find out it is going to be a police car. Especially since Matchbox already did one a few years ago. For me? I love it. It seems to fit the direction of Matchbox, and it is always welcome especially with overseas police liveries. The Matchbox fleet of police cars grows with this one, and fits in nicely with the older Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo Police.
But yeah, it would be super cool to see a stock, street version of the STI from Matchbox. Gold rims, blue body, and front and rear detail. That would be tasty. So I get why many would rather see that.
But it is a police car, and it debuts in 2017 with a UK-inspired livery that matches the previous release of the Evo Police. They make a great pair.

This quick look examines a few vehicles reviewed here before either as different variations or from different diecast manufacturers. Here the star is the new 2017 Ford GT along the recolor of the McLaren P1, an older release of the Matchbox 2005 Ford GT worth looking at, and an all-new VW Golf for Hot Wheels.

the Lamley Group: Here is your first look at the 2017 Matchbox Subaru Impreza WRX STI Police...
Matchbox has thrown another little holiday preview our way, this time in the form of the brand new for 2017 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Police.
It might seem odd to have another Impreza Police this soon after Matchbox did an older version a few years ago, but in my view the more they do these models the better.  This release compliments the older STI nicely, and the deco matches the UK-imspired livery of a previous version of the Mitsu Evo X.

the Lamley Group: A Porsche we missed: Matchbox 911 GT1...
We didn't all miss it. But if I had to guess, there are far more diecast Porsche lovers that don't have the Matchbox 911 GT1 than do.
I don't need to talk about the plethora of Porsche in the diecast world these days. Not too long ago Hot Wheels essentially ignored Porsche while Matchbox was putting out a few. I have no idea why that was, but it seems hard to fathom that there was a time Hot Wheels wasn't doing Porsche replicas.

the Lamley Group: The upcoming Matchbox BMW i3 is coming along very nicely...
Last week Matchbox sent me a few upcoming models to preview (I showed the awesome Tuk Tuk last week), and mixed in among them were a couple of preproduction test shots.
Preproduction models like these are smack-dab in the middle of the development process. The design is essentially done, the tool is made, and these are castings made, painted in an available color, and put together for testing, inspection, and approval. Some tweaks might be made, but usually nothing too significant.
So it was cool for Matchbox to send a couple over (and yes they will be going back) to give us an update on how some of these models are coming together. The first is one of the more interesting choices for the line this year, the BMW i3.

the Lamley Group: The Matchbox Tuk Tuk is the result of a very cool collaboration...
Earlier this week the Matchbox Team sent over a few models to preview for you here on Lamley in the coming days. Most of them are completed and will be hitting the pegs soon, and there are a couple prototypes that will give you an update on their developments.
There are some cool models to be sure, most licensed, but the Tuk Tuk is the model I am most excited to show. I am in love.
There is a lot to say about the model, but what might be most interesting is how it was executed. More on that in a bit.

the Lamley Group: The Matchbox '63 Cadillac Hearse is definitely the best Halloween-ish model I have...
I wasn't planning on doing a Halloween-themed post today. No need for Lamley to remind you what day it is today. Every Facebook post not about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will do that.
But when I made my run to Walmart last night to find the Fast & Furious models, I ended up behind a fantastic metallic bronze '63 Caddie Hearse clearly hauling a group around. The car was immaculate. Long, low to the ground, with a white roof and silver hubs.

It has been very cool to see the response to the upcoming Matchbox Best of the World Assortment. I wondered if Hot Wheels Real Riders on a Matchbox model would cause a riot, but it hasn't. It seems most of you are happy to see them, with some of you commenting that it was about time.
I have no idea if will see this cross pollination again, but for this little batch it is a definite winner. And of all the models in the set, none has gotten even a fraction of the attention that the blue Lamborghini Miura has received. It is clearly the star of the set.

the Lamley Group: Don't call this Mr. Bean's Mini...
So my guess is that if Matchbox ever did a Pontiac Aztek in a tan color, all of us would associate it with Walter White's Aztek. Of course, linking that horror of an auto to Breaking Bad would be the ONLY way Matchbox would do the Aztek. And trust me, they aren't.
Of course they did do the Chrysler 300 this year, and if we ever see one in all black with dark rims, a few of us will link it to Walter White's Aztek replacement. It isn't as iconic as the Aztek, but the black 300 did hide Jesse in one of the craziest Breaking Bad episodes there was (RIP Hank).

There are probably a handful of models in your collection that fall in a unique category. That category? Models that you like better in 1:64 than in real life.
It might be more than a handful. A $1 price point on a Hot Wheels or Matchbox can make you appreciate something a lot more than maybe you should. Matchbox has done quite a few. The Range Rover Evoque is one of them.

Found the silver Matchbox Skyline yet?
I haven't seen it in stores yet. Considering Matchbox distribution and only two Skylines per case, I figured it would be hard to find, and it is proving so. Hopefully we see more and more cases hit the stores as we move to the holidays, and if all else fails, prices have relaxed on eBay.

This just appeared on the @matchboxworld Instagram feed...
This is clearly a prototype, which sports the blue interior used for Mattel prototypes these days. The color is also what happened to be lying around when it was put together. The wheels may or may not be the type used on the final model as well.
The body looks good, and the detail is there, although it does appear to sit a little high. We will have to see when the final version is released. A very exciting 2017 continues...

the Lamley Group: Matchbox 2017 Best of the World: It's the little things...
Based on the response so far, I think I can safely say there is excitement for the first batch of 2017 Matchbox Best of the World. It was very cool for Matchbox to allow me to debut them here and on the Lamley YouTube Channel, and I had a blast doing it. These should be available starting next month, and some stores have them listed.
I promised pics of all six, and here they are. And oh my, is this a pretty set. I have pontificated enough on the video, so I don't need to say too much here. But there are a few things I think are worth mentioning.

So Matchbox went there.
Europe you ask? Well, yes. The first assortment of 2017 (there will be two) is all Euro, and almost all German. But they went somewhere else as well. The off-road tread of the Matchbox two-part wheels in last year's Best of assortment was the most common complaint, so the "nothing is off the table" approach that this current Matchbox Team takes unveiled a logical solution.
This should garner some feedback.
Enjoy the vid. Full pic showcase coming tomorrow, and man do they look good...

the Lamley Group: A tale of two: Matchbox & Majorette Jaguar F Types...
I am not too keen on "Who wore it better?" posts. Comparing a model from one brand vs. the same from another is almost never fair. There are the obvious pairs that don't merit comparison, like a Hot Wheels and Tomica Limited Vintage, for example. And there are some that are similar in many ways, but differences in approach make one appeal to some while the other appeals to a different group.
That is the case with Majorette and Matchbox. Majorette is probably more comparable to Matchbox 20 years ago. As costs and brand direction changed, Majorette stuck to features and their price went up. Matchbox at Mattel has stuck to a price point and innovated within those cost limitations.

the Lamley Group: Matchbox Monday First Look, Part 2: Fisker Karma EVer in black...
As we stated in Part 1, this is Part 2 mainly because the Fisker Karma doesn't go at all with the models of Part 1.
(And Matchbox Monday is STILL brought to you by MVE Collectibles...)
Normally we would feature this new color of the Karma with a few other new basic offerings from Matchbox. After all the model has been around for a few years, and black is not necessarily a stunning color.
But wait, it is stunning! Clearly Matchbox has limits on what color they drape over the Karma, just as Fisker demands that the solar panel be included on every model (no argument from me). So Matchbox had to release a Karma in black again (it was done in 2011 I believe), only they changed the wheels. And poof! The best looking Fisker Karma yet!

the Lamley Group: Matchbox Monday Model of the Day: Fisker Karma PHev...
I remember being at the Matchbox Gathering in Albuquerque a few years ago when Felix Holst announced that Matchbox would do the Fisker Karma. Hearing Felix say "Fisker Karma" in his Sean Connery-like voice instantly made it sound cool, even though I had never heard of it. It did not take long for me to do a small bit of research and get very excited about this model.
Now there seems to be a rule of thumb when it comes to me and Matchbox models I am excited about. That rule is if jtl really wants a new model, it must come in the last batch of the year, just to make him wait. And wait I did. The model was announced at the Gathering in July 2009, and it was not until January 2011 that I finally got my hands on it. And that was after it appeared in Australia around Thanksgiving, and not in the States until two months afterwards. Pure torture.

the Lamley Group: Removing the whole JDM hype thing, the '71 Nissan Skyline fits Matchbox perfectly...
Enough on the Skyline, right?
After all the talk, or hype as some like to claim (I'll call it genuine excitement on my part), progress report posts, and a custom contest, this is the actually the first "First Look" type feature I have done on the Matchbox Skyline.
There is no need to share my feelings on this model, as I think that is pretty evident. And I know I am not alone. This has been an eagerly anticipated release for a lot of folks. And don't call it a fad. Some have claimed this is just Matchbox taking advantage of the JDM train. I would say it is completely the opposite.
The Skyline is not a signal of a new direction at Matchbox, it is more a sign of a return to what we have always loved about Matchbox. Real cars, looking like they do on the street today or yesterday, from all over the world.

the Lamley Group: The '71 Skyline is not Matchbox's first foray into the Nissan/Datsun world...
There is a lot being said about the brand new 1971 Nissan Skyline 2000GT-X from Matchbox. Most of you are as excited as I am, others of you not so much. Some even think it is downright ugly, maybe because you aren't used to the fact that the actual stock Skyline was more Camry than cool car back in the day.
Supercool, or treacherously ugly, there is no doubt the Skyline is a very interesting model, and definitely a refreshing release from the orange brand. With that in mind, there has also been a lot of talk about what the Skyline represents for Matchbox. "Finally, a true JDM from Matchbox" to "Playing into the JDM hype". Neither of those comments are correct. All the Skyline represents is a continued return to realism, because this is not even close to Matchbox's first JDM model. Nor is it Matchbox's first Nissan.

Just a heads up to start checking the Matchbox 5-packs.
A few weeks ago the Matchbox Team hinted at a running change on the Mazda 2 in the Matchbox City 5-pack. It would go from 6-spokes to disk hubs.
To be honest, we have heard this before, but many times running changes never appear. We are still waiting for a trispoke Miata (it still might happen), but no need to wait on the Mazda 2.

The SLR McLaren is back, and it returns to the 2017 Mainline.
Until now it has been a one-year wonder. It debuted in 2009 in silver, was recolored in black, and then Mattel lost the license. A blue model was planned for a 5-pack, but was cancelled. And the tool has sat in limbo ever since.

the Lamley Group: The Volvo V60 joins the stellar Matchbox Wagon family...
There are a lot of Matchbox previews to come.
As they have in years past, the Matchbox Team granted a me a few minutes to photograph the preview models they brought to the Gathering. Many were upcoming 2016 models, and they had almost all 2017 New Models in some form or another, mostly SLA versions, or 3D prints. And we will show them all - Originals and licensed - coming up soon.
For now, let's stay in 2016. It's been a good year, and it will end great. The final batches are full of goodies, most notably that Skyline that seems to have folks giddy about. But after the Skyline rush has come and gone, a beauty in blue will make its debut, the Volvo V60 Wagon in Polestar Blue.
