Aston Martin's Q personalization service imagines garages as exclusive as the cars in them.
Through their Automotive Galleries and Lairs program, Aston Martin customers can order a bespoke garage or luxury retreat as a customized space for their cars.
The design service is part of Q, the brand’s personalization service, which also works with customers to create their custom Aston Martin cars.
Entire luxury homes or retreats designed by renowned architects can be created, naturally making the vehicle(s) the focal point.
Ready to channel your inner Bruce Wayne? Aston Martin thinks you are. While the British luxury brand is normally associated with a different suave crime fighter, the company has just revealed a new design service that enables its well-heeled customers to create bespoke garages, enticingly known as "automotive lairs," in which to keep their vehicles (when they’re not out fighting Bane, presumably).
To create the structures, the Aston Martin Design Team collaborates with prominent architects. Together they work with clients to best utilize each customer's particular space. "Imagine a home or luxury retreat built around your car," Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichman said via press release. "Picture creating the ultimate space to showcase your own automotive works of art. This is now achievable."

We definitely didn't have the cash to buy either, which is fine because they're only making 200 of the GT2 and 77 of the 935. Fortunately, Porsche invited us to drive their new 700-hp customer race cars at the Lausitzring in Germany.

The 2020 Drako GTE Sedan Is an Ultra-Fast and Ultra-Pricey EV
This 1200-hp electric four-seater can go 206 mph and costs $1.3 million.
The Drako GTE is an all-electric, 1200-hp sedan with a claimed top speed of 206 mph.
The high-powered four-seater is made by Drako Motors, a California-based startup, and is making its debut during the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The company plans to build only 25 examples starting at $1.3 million apiece—far more than electric rivals such as the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan.
High-speed family transportation may have just glimpsed its future—at least, high-speed family transportation for families of serious wealth. Enter the Drako GTE. With an estimated top speed of 206 mph and a combined 1200 horsepower, this all-electric four-seater is intended to elevate electric-sedan performance into a whole new category.
The GTE is built by California-based startup Drako Motors, which says it plans to sell just 25 copies. Here's the kicker. Each one will cost at least $1.3 million.
With a price that high, we don't expect the same people who shop even the most powerful Tesla Model S or the forthcoming Porsche Taycan to find the GTE in their ballpark. Still, the GTE's aerodynamic and aggressive-looking bodywork should appeal to fans of both less expensive alternatives, if only to look at.

Bugatti Centodieci, a 1577-HP Hypercar, Revealed at Pebble Beach
Inspired by the EB110, limited to 10 copies, priced starting above $8 million, all sold.
Bugatti's newest limited-edition hypercar, the Centodieci, gets unique bodywork and luxury features to make it even more exclusive than other Bugattis.
Although its top speed is 25 mph less than the Chiron's, its 1577-hp quad-turbo W-16 ensures it's the quickest-accelerating Bugatti to date.
The Centodieci made its debut at Pebble Beach in the leadup to the Concours d'Elegance.
Automakers often turn to past glories to draw inspiration for new models. Yet the surprise for the new Bugatti Centodieci, which has just been unveiled at Pebble Beach during Concours d'Elegance week, is which former model has played muse to it: the Centodieci pays homage to the EB110, as its name (which translates to "110") suggests.
Although one of the fastest cars of its era, the EB110 has never been regarded as a success. The Bugatti brand had been lying dormant for decades before it was revived by Italian businessman Romano Artioli in the late 1980s. An all-new factory was constructed at Campogalliano, Italy, near Modena to make the new model, which featured such innovative technology as a carbon-fiber core structure and a 553-hp 60-valve quad-turbocharged V-12.

McLaren F1 LM-Specification Sells for Record-Breaking $19,800,000 at Monterey Car Week Auction - The Drive
Monterey Car Week is currently in full swing and the roads of Central California are buzzing with some of the rarest cars on earth, but all eyes were fixed on the RM Sotheby's booth this weekend. That's because a McLaren F1 LM-Specification, arguably the star of Pebble Beach this year, sold for more than $19 million at auction after fees.
RM Sotheby's confirmed that the ultra-rare hypercar sold for $19,805,000 when all was said and done on Friday at the auction company's Monterey sale.  This is actually less than the dizzying $21 million-$23 million price RM estimated the car would go for, but it's still the most expensive F1 ever sold at auction, and for good reason.
This car is one of just two McLaren F1s to receive the LM-Specification upgrade, which puts it on the same level as the track-only F1 LMs, themselves an homage to the Le Mans-winning F1 GTR race car. The two road-going F1s to receive the upgrade were sent back to the factory where McLaren installed a high-downforce kit, adding front fender vents, more aerodynamic side skirts, and a large rear wing. The BMW 6.1-liter V-12 power plant was also freed of its restraints, boosting power to 680 horses and bringing the redline up to 8,500 RPM. Thanks to RM Sotheby's, we can now hear what it sounds like at full shout.

The standard seems to be this:
Hot Wheels creates the first release of a basic licensed New Model in a stock or stock-like deco. There is a good chance a recolor is done in the same way. But after that, releases could be in all kinds of made up graphics. Custom stripes for example.
Mixing it up works. The side silhouette of a model as it sits in the blister is obviously important for those passing the pegs looking for a $1 toy to buy. Grab their attention and compel them to snag it. But card art is helping more than ever, with individual renderings on the card to attract attention as well.
So to me, that means more stock versions, if applicable. Enter the Bugatti Chiron.
This is a fabulous new model, hitting stores now, and it doesn’t need anymore hype. The collector world is ready to gobble it up. Hot Wheels in introducing it in a beautiful deep blue stock look, with the iconic front grill and side silver trim. It’s fantastic. It doesn’t appear that a second color is planned for 2019, so we wait and see what happens in 2020. I hope we see it again, just like this, only in a new color.
Two-tone would be ideal, but for a $1 car that can’t happen. Premium it can.
I mention all this because I saw these fantastic renderings by Lamley Reader Tanishq Chauhan yesterday on the LGG Facebook Group. He took the photograph above, edited in Y5 basic wheels, and had his way with all kinds of colors and combinations. The Chiron, like the Veyron before it, was built to don any color, so there is your customization. No need to add extra stripes or anything. Tanishq‘s photos show all the other things Hot Wheels can do.

Florida may be short on good driving roads, but we found one in Shelby's supercharged 610-hp pony car.
For $177, you can stand in lines at Disney all day. You can cover a night in a decent hotel room or eat a plate of deconstructed fried pickles at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Or you can invest in 24 hours with the supercharged 600-plus-hp Mustang Shelby GT-S. Let's put that last one into perspective: You can't buy even half of a rear tire for the Shelby with $177.
HIGHS: Cheaper and more exciting than Disney and without the lines; more car than most of us can afford; someone else deals with the maintenance, wear, and depreciation.
This veritable bargain is the mad-genius work of Sixt, Germany's largest car-rental company and a growing player in the United States since 2011. Sixt has split 20 Shelbys among branches in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, with rates fluctuating based on demand. Sixt asked $177 per day during our drive and caps the rate at $250. The company also restricts renters to 175 miles per day, unless you're willing to cover each additional mile at a cost of 83 cents per. Plan accordingly and a Shelby GT-S rental is a small price for the ultimate car-enthusiast vacation. Think of it as an escape from the three-row crossover or the rusting sedan in your driveway and all the adult responsibilities that it represents. The Shelby GT-S turns every open road into a thrill ride that you pilot. And if it takes your entire vacation budget to make it happen, know that you can probably cook a steak on the car's supercharger and sleep in the passenger's seat.

The craziest thing about the ID Buggy is that VW actually wants to build it.
CARMEL, CALIF.—Do you remember that bright green electric beach buggy that Volkswagen showed off back in March? It's called the ID Buggy, and it's one of a growing number of ID-badged concepts from the automaker that show the way to its post-diesel future. It's a wildly different-looking bunch, yet each uses VW's new modular architecture for battery electric vehicles, called MEB. The ID Buggy is definitely the most left-field of the ID vehicles, even without the bright green bodywork. But under that one-off concept body is a production MEB powertrain, just like the one that will appear in the Europe-only ID 3 as well as the US-bound ID Crozz crossover and ID Buzz BEVs. But the craziest thing about the Buggy isn't the way it looks or that VW let me drive it. No, the craziest thing about the Buggy it's the fact that VW is actively exploring ways to put it into production.
Modular architectures have been all the rage among automakers for a while now. These are much more flexible than the platforms of old and are more like a giant box of parts and components that simplify the design process and the supply chain. VW Group has been all-in when it comes to modular architectures since it introduced its MQB platform in 2011, which provides the bone structure for everything from the diminutive Polo hatchback in Europe to the made-in-Chattanooga, Tennessee Atlas three-row SUV.

Chevy promised the new Corvette would be under $60,000, and it is. Fully loaded models can top $80,000.
The 2020 Chevy Corvette has an official starting price of $59,995, fulfilling GM's promise that it would start under $60,000.
The 2LT trim level starts at $67,295 and the 3LT starts at $71,945. The Z51 Performance package costs $5000 and can be added to any trim level.
You can pre-order a Corvette now on Chevrolet's website or at a dealership.
Chevrolet has delivered on its promise that the C8 Corvette will start under $60,000. The base 1LT model ducks just under that cap and starts at exactly $59,995, $3000 more than the C7 Corvette Stingray. That is remarkable given that the C8-generation car features an all-new mid-engine architecture and should provide a big performance bump over its predecessor.
The base $59,995 1LT trim level includes a fair number of standard features, including dual-zone climate control, power seats, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

With its iconic sky blue and orange Gulf Oil paint job and supercharged engine specs its a car that lives up to its famed inspiration.

2020 Dodge Charger SRT Daytona Gets a 717-HP Hellcat V-8
Production will be limited to 501 units, just like the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that inspired it.
The 2020 Dodge Charger Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition marks the arrival of the 717-hp version of the Hellcat to the Charger lineup.
The car is an obvious and loving tribute to the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona.
Ordering starts in the fall, with only 501 units to be produced, and vehicles will arrive in dealerships in early 2020.
Here's an existential query: When you've already got 707 horsepower, can 10 more make a tangible difference? Dodge certainly thinks so, and with the introduction of the—take a deep breath—2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition, the Charger is finally collecting those bonus 10 ponies that the Challenger SRT Hellcat received for the 2019 model year.
Although it'd be nearly impossible to recreate the bulbous nose and high-flying wing of the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona for a current production vehicle, the 2020 Charger Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition does co-opt the rear stripe graphic treatment. It also gets a unique “Daytona” decklid and a coat of Daytona-exclusive B5 Blue paint. The car will be available with Pitch Black, Triple Nickel, or White Knuckle paint, too, but the exclusive B5 Blue will probably be the one that collectors zero in on. (On White Knuckle cars, the Daytona decal and spoiler are blue, and the Hellcat badge has a bright finish.) A set of 20-by-11-inch Warp Speed wheels with a unique satin carbon finish wrapped in 305/35ZR Pirelli all-season performance tires (three-season tires are optional) provide traction, while black Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes with vented rotors do their best to erase speed.

2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Gets 717 HP With Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition - The Drive
Only 501 of these high-powered muscle machines will be built in honor of the original '69 Charger Daytona.
Dodge's longstanding ties with motorsport and muscle cars have brought about more than a handful of stellar machines, perhaps most notably the 1969 Charger Daytona. It was a style icon that won on the race track, capturing the lust of fans and helping to define the career of Richard Petty, NASCAR's winningest driver of all time. The Dodge brand often pays tribute to its pedigree, and it's decided to so once again, but not with any ordinary model.
Instead, the automaker has taken a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody and dressed it up to resemble the classic Daytona, all while adding even more horsepower to the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.
Although it doesn't feature a slant nose or wicked-tall rear wing, the new Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition pays homage to its historic predecessor in several ways. First off, with its name, and also its production run—Dodge will only build 501 of them, just as it did with the original 1969 model due to NASCAR's minimum homologation requirements.
The new Hellcat Widebody Daytona rocks far more horsepower than the car it references, though, at 717 horsepower—that's about 342 more than the '69. Dodge hasn't given word on the Hellcat-based machine's top speed but, in standard Widebody trim, it's limited to 196 miles per hour due to its added girth. An extra 10 horsepower and some ECU trickery could possibly help it to surpass the 200-mph mark, making it an even more fitting heir to the throne.

Acura Type S Concept Revealed With Specs, Info, and Pictures
Acura's Type S sub-brand has been on a bit of a hiatus for the last decade. The last Acura to wear the Type S badge was the 2008 TL sedan. Sporting a 286-horsepower V-6, a six-speed manual, and Brembo brakes, it was a solid contender in its segment, and looked great. Since then, Acura's neglected the Type S brand. Now, it's back. This is the Type S Concept, built to preview the Type S brand's return to the Acura lineup.
The Type S Concept is a showcase for Acura's future design language, incorporating cues we'll see on the company's performance models for years to come, in particular. Acura's now-familiar fascia has been revamped with a more aggressive appearance, incorporating fangs that cut into the lower grille and new headlights with what Acura calls "chicane"-shaped LED daytime running lights. The paint, Double Apex Blue Pearl, uses nano pigments and a color-infused clear coat. It's a homage to previous Type S cars, including the aforementioned TL Type S. It looks pretty damn good.

2019 BMW Z4
The Z4 roadster will reappear after a four-year hiatus, and this time it will be better equipped to serve its sports-car mission. Unlike its predecessor, it will be offered only with a soft top. If you're interested in a fixed-roof coupe, the similarly new Toyota Supra shares the Z4's six-cylinder engine, transmission, and underlying structure.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
The base engine is a 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, which will come with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic; a manual transmission will not be offered, much to the disappointment of enthusiasts everywhere. Cars with the turbo four wear the 30i badge; stepping up to the M40i adds a 382-hp turbocharged inline-six. The Z4 is stout, too: BMW says it's the stiffest open-top car it has ever built. Handling was sharp and lively when we sampled one in Portugal; the steering was crisp, the transmission quick to shift, and the six-cylinder provided effortless power and sounded just as punchy. We haven't had the chance to sample a Z4 at our test track, but we estimate a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.2 seconds for the M40i and 5.0 seconds for the 30i.

2020 Lexus LC500 Inspiration Series Debuts in Nori Green
This limited edition is classy AF.
Ahead of this year's Pebble Beach and Monterey Car Week festivities, Lexus has shown off the new-for-2020 LC500 Inspiration Series. This new, limited-edition variant of the LC is offered exclusively in Nori (an edible form of dried algae) Green Pearl paint with tan leather interior.
This is not a drill. Lexus just dropped the best color combination possible (fight me) on the best-looking Lexus of all time. The only caveat? They're only making 100.
There are no mechanical changes to the Inspiration Series, which means it's still armed with Lexus's sweet 471-hp 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 and 10-speed automatic transmission. But enough about that. More pics of the paint!

Ford Mustang Gulf Heritage Edition from Brown Lee packs 800 horsepower | Autoblog
It's priced well into Porsche 911 territory
Brown Lee, a Ford dealership in Morrison, Tennessee, created a limited-edition Mustang GT that honors the Blue Oval's illustrious performance heritage while promising to give the 760-horsepower Shelby GT500 a run for its money. The dealer's Gulf Heritage Mustang offers a long list of performance-oriented mechanical and visual add-ons to enthusiasts willing to pay supercar money for it.
The Gulf Heritage Mustang starts life as a run-of-the-mill GT. It gains a light blue and orange Gulf paint job that pays tribute to the GT40 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. It's not the first time we've seen this livery on a 21st century Ford; the modern-day GT comes with the same paint job when buyers select the Heritage Edition package. 20-inch alloy wheels finished in a glossy shade of gray and a carbon fiber body kit add a finishing touch to the look.
The space between the Mustang's distinctive blue fenders is occupied by a 5.0-liter V8 engine supercharged to 800 horsepower and 674 pound-feet of torque. It sprints from zero to 60 mph in a little under 3.5 seconds, a figure that makes it about half a second quicker than the Mustang GT it's based on. Buyers can choose whether the cavalry reaches the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. Neither is available on the GT500, which makes us wonder if they should be reinforced to handle the extra power.
Brown Lee upgraded the V8 with a 3.0-liter supercharger, an air-to-water intercooler, a high-flow air induction system, and beefier fuel injectors. Suspension modifications that make the Mustang lower and firmer help enthusiasts take advantage of the 340-horsepower bump compared to a stock GT. To add context, that's like injecting a 2020 Toyota Supra's worth of power into the Mustang's driveline.
The finishing touch is a metal plaque on the engine bay engraved with the car's serial number; Brown Lee will make 119 examples of the Gulf Heritage Mustang. It's available as a coupe and as a convertible, and pricing starts at $140,000. That figure places it in the same ballpark as other high-horsepower machines like the Nissan GT-R, Acura NSX, Jaguar F-Type and upmarket variants of the Porsche 911. Peddling a Mustang for 911 money is ambitious, but tuners like Shelby and Roush — which Brown Lee often works with — have shown the market is there.

Do-it-all tool around camp
I am a long time tent camper who camps on the cheap at primitve camp sites where I haul in my own water and haul out my own waste. I camp with either a 4X4 truck or Subaru Outback. My approach is minimalist, and I look for tools that have multiuse and are hopefully inexpensive. I’ve used the Coghlan’s scissors for many years, and found them to be well worth having.
The Coghlan’s 12-in-1 scissors is a silly looking and cheap ($5) tool that is surprisingly useful. It will cut fairly heavy material, has a bottle opener, screwdriver, and will come apart so you can use it as an awl or hole punch in an emergency. Granted, it is not elegant but it is surprisingly useful. I have two pairs of these in my camp gear, and end up using them for stuff like gripping needles to pull through heavy fabric, and other unexpected uses. They are cheap to buy and a useful addition to any kit.

A California man's vanity license plate backfires spectacularly.
The relationship between Americans and their automobiles is a complicated one. More than mere transport, cars can become extensions of one's personality—think of stereotypes about drivers of a particular model like a Corvette, for instance. Since cars are mass-produced, it's natural that people want to personalize them. Sometimes it's covering them with every bit of chromed plastic you can find at JC Whitney. Sometimes it's plastering them in stickers. And sometimes, it might just be a personalized number plate.
The rules for personalized plates vary depending on the state in which you're registering your car. These can foster creativity, but today we have a cautionary tale from California, which reveals the risks of being too creative. It's the story of a security researcher known as Droogie, who presented his experience at the recent DEF CON conference in Las Vegas. Droogie decided his new vanity plate should read "NULL." While he did this mainly for the giggles, he told the audience that there was an ulterior motive, as reported by Mashable:
"I was like, ‘I'm the shit,'" he joked to the crowd. "'I’m gonna be invisible.' Instead, I got all the tickets."

After being told by the DMV and LAPD to change his plates, the I.T. professional refused, saying "No, I didn’t do anything wrong."
A California man recently devised a cunning plot to never be held responsible for any parking or traffic tickets ever again—a plot that spectacularly backfired, according to Mashable.
Recounting his experience at this year's DEF CON hacking conference, an information security researcher who goes by the handle "Droogie" cheekily attempted to fool the DMV's computer system by registering a vanity plate that read "NULL," the computer programming shorthand for a non-existent value. If all went to plan, any and all tickets issued to the plate "NULL" would, at the end of the day, be issued to no plate at all.
As anyone with a modicum of programming experience will attest, these things rarely go as planned. "I was like, 'I'm the sh*t,'" Droogie told the audience. "'I’m gonna be invisible.' Instead, I got all the tickets."
Things seemed fine for the uneventful first year he owned the plate but when he tried to renew the tags, entering "NULL" into the California DMV's online registration renewal site broke the page. Shortly after that, Droogie's car got slapped with a parking ticket, an event that triggered thousands of dollars worth of tickets to be mailed to his house, all addressed to him. All in all, Droogie appeared to be on the hook for over $12,000 in fines.

Acura Type S Concept Is an Exciting Preview of Future Performance Models
Said to predict the upcoming TLX Type S, this sports sedan certainly looks the part.
The Acura Type S is a sporty concept car that previews the next-generation TLX sedan.
Expected to arrive next year as a 2021 model, the new TLX will offer a Type S performance model with a turbocharged V-6.
The Type S concept is being shown as part of the 2019 Monterey Car Week festivities leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Acura is looking for a hit. While the strong-selling MDX and RDX crossovers are largely supporting the luxury brand, Acura would really like to gain some enthusiast credibility and make good on the brand's performance claims. Hence the return of the Type S performance badge, applied here on the Acura Type S sports-sedan concept.
This new concept car certainly looks the part. The proportions are stunning. There's an elegance to the design, which is clean and without extraneous affectation. Even Acura's "Diamond Pentagon" grille is nicely integrated and tastefully done. In profile, there's more than a little bit of Audi A7. The striking blue color, called Double Apex Blue Pearl, is said to hark back to a hue offered on the 2007–2008 TL Type S.

New Acura Type S Concept Is Proof That Beautiful Japanese Sports Cars Still Exist - The Drive
This marks the return of the Type S moniker, which was last used on the sporty 2008 TL variant.
As promised, Acura has taken the wraps off of the svelte-yet-aggressive Type S Concept. It previews the next-generation TLX Type S sports sedan but judging from its low, long, coupe-like proportions, you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for the Integra's second coming. And we gotta say, we're fans.
It's a chiseled and graceful design that reminds us of what Acura was all about in its glory days: simple and honest performance. Its rear-end vaguely reminds us of the aforementioned Integra while its front fascia features elements of NSX and what is probably the brand's most attractive version of the diamond pentagon grille to date.
The Concept's Double Apex Blue Pearl paint is a nod to the cult-favorite 2007-2008 TL Type S. That car was the last time the Type S name appeared on an Acura product. The Honda luxury arm says two Type S production models will be out within the next two years, presumably one of which will be based on the new TLX.
"The return of Type S is instrumental in our mission to return Acura to its performance roots," said Acura Vice President Jon Ikeda. "From bringing back the NSX to winning at the highest level of North American sports car racing and ushering-in a new generation starting with the RDX, we are revitalizing Acura on the foundation of our original and authentic brand values, piece by piece."
We're fully expecting Acura to bill the second-gen TLX as a four-door "coupe" just like the Germans do and build it using components from the current, slope-roofed Honda Accord. The Acura Type S Concept will be on display at The Quail on Friday before heading to the Pebble Beach lawn on Sunday as part of Monterey Car Week.

Nashville-based Brown Lee Ford will build "only" 119 of these mega-Mustangs to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford's 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans win.
Our nation's Ford dealers war over who can offer the most powerful Mustang off the showroom floor, and as of Monday, they face a new combatant. Brown Lee Ford has entered the ring with an ultra-powerful, limited-edition model called the Gulf Heritage Mustang, which nods to Ford's historic wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
An officially licensed Gulf Oil product, the 'Stang features the classic orange-and-blue livery and is bedecked in Gulf motifs everywhere they can fit. The front fenders, rear valence, seatbacks, and numbered authenticity plaques all bear the logo of the erstwhile petroleum company and sponsor of our favorite sport.
Of course, Brown Lee Ford doesn't try to justify the car's $139,995 price tag with nostalgic branding alone; it brandishes performance worthy of its racing-derived color scheme. Brembo brakes are enclosed in 20-inch alloy wheels, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Their contact with the pavement is maintained by lowered suspension and downforce generated by functional carbon fiber aero, including a splitter, sills, a diffuser, and a trunk spoiler.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Changes Include GT500 Components
In reality, the two Mustangs share a name, their basic bodies, and—look out—steering geometry!
Ford is touting the fact that the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R now uses the same steering setup as the GT500.
The revised steering geometry and software is said to improve handling.
The GT350R is otherwise unchanged for 2020 and will go on sale later this year.
It's only natural for automakers to try and market their lesser products using links to their halo models. Ford's giving it a go with the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R, the spicier, even more track-focused variant of the GT350 model, which it now has a direct mechanical connection to the upcoming king-of-the-hill GT500. To be fair, though, the 2020 GT350R gets only one hand-me-down from the 760-hp GT500: its revised steering geometry. We know, try not to spit up your coffee.

When we went out to the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon to put the plug-in hybrid Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid through its paces last month, there was a bonus SUV waiting for us: the all-new 2020 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. Porsche has officially taken the wraps off this $161,000 V8 PHEV, along with a pair of coupes: the V6 Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe and the V8 Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe.
The Turbo S E-Hybrid is Porsche's most-powerful SUV, capable of 670hp (493kW) and 663lb-ft (899Nm) of torque. Most of the power comes courtesy of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which spits out 541hp (404kW), while the rest is produced by a 134hp (100kW) electric motor mounted between the internal-combustion engine and an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. Like the base Cayenne hybrid, drivers can select from a handful of drive modes to dial in the preferred balance of performance and economy. In Sport+ mode, the S Turbo constantly charges the battery enough so you can always get that extra oomph from the motor-engine combo. It's the same powertrain as you'll find in the Panamera.

We Take a Tire-Squealing Ride in a 2020 Porsche Taycan
Porsche's electric sports sedan is almost here and feels ready to impress.
Porsche's high-performance electric sedan, the 2020 Taycan, is almost here. Just ahead of its formal debut on September 4th, we got a chance to ride along in a prototype with Porsche's product line director for EVs, Robert Meier.
Although the company is still holding back a lot of details on what is arguably the first direct Tesla competitor, we rode in a top-of-the line performance variant with the larger of two battery-pack options, carbon-ceramic brake rotors, active anti-roll bars, air springs, rear-wheel steering, and a 21-inch wheel-and-tire package. Porsche doesn't yet want to talk about its trim level strategy, but molded into the door sills of this one, under a piece of black tape, read Taycan 4S. So it appears the naming won't break with Porsche traditions, which would make the top trim likely to be called Turbo or Turbo S.

The coolest thing about Hobbs and Shaw aren't the cars, it's the outfits
Have you been to see Hobbs and Shaw yet? It's the latest installment from the Fast and Furious franchise, a spinoff starring Vanessa Kirby, Jason Statham, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Idris Elba, and it's pretty darn good as far as mindless summer action flicks go. Now, I know what you're thinking: he only really likes it because it's got some cool cars. But here's a secret—I'm far more in love with the way everyone is dressed in the movie.
Much of the credit for that goes to Sarah Evelyn, the film's costume designer. But there's another influence at work in the wardrobe department, that of techwear luminary Errolson Hugh. Hugh has been called "your favorite designer's favorite designer," although more recently you might know him from having started that bottle cap challenge earlier this summer.
It's fair to say Hugh's attitude towards design, particularly with his label Acronym, is uncompromising. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Gordon Murray's approach to designing the McLaren F1. Like Murray, Hugh's work is heavy with the latest technology—it is called techwear after all. But instead of ultra lightweight composites (the McLaren F1 was the first production road car to be made completely from carbon fiber), it's cutting edge fabrics from companies like Schoeller, Gore, and Nextec.

Mazda 3 vs. Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra

Highs: Luxurious interior, attractive exterior, competent handling.
Lows: Expensive, manual in top trim only, sedate driver.
Verdict: Could be the winner of a different test.
Americans have had to learn some hard lessons about the Electoral College over the last two decades. Now our comparison-test scoring system is affording us the opportunity to teach those lessons to Hyundai and Mazda. Call it a cultural exchange. When the driving was over but before our votes were submitted, we didn't even consider the possibility that the Mazda 3 would be our second-place car. It wasn't anyone's favorite to drive, it's a lot more expensive than the hatchbacks we preferred driving, and we didn't have high expectations for its performance at the test track, which can often swing a car's overall scores significantly.
What we hadn't considered is that the Mazda 3 is by far the best-looking, most premium, most comfortable car in this test. It also earned high scores in several powertrain categories, despite a middling performance at the track, largely because the engine is smooth and quiet. With deserved high marks in those categories, our determination that the 3 isn't that fun to drive anymore—a real shame, given Mazda's track record of building sporty cars to sell in otherwise-boring segments—didn't matter that much. And so, a car we had all but counted out came away from this test with a second-place finish, and we came away wondering whether we should have pulled a Zuckerberg and thumbed the scales in favor of our preferred candidates.
We didn't do that, though, because while this Mazda 3 isn't the great driving car it used to be, it remains a standout in this set. It's the one you'd be proud to give your boss a ride in, and it has the most up-to-date exterior design. Outfitted as the 3 was with gray paint and a red leatherette interior, it looks positively sophisticated. It feels that way, too, at least when cruising on the highway, where the Mazda is quieter than its rivals. It doesn't stand up to hard driving quite the same way, though. As vehicle testing director Dave VanderWerp put it, "This is a car that feels worse the harder you drive it."
That's not the way we're used to feeling about Mazdas, but it might be what some drivers want from their manual hatchbacks. In cars this size and at this price point, you simply can't have it all. For drivers who want a small hatchback but value comfort and features over price and performance, the 3 is a valid choice, even if it wouldn't be ours.

2020 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works All4 Is Much More Powerful
Mini's John Cooper Works division cranks up the Clubman's performance with a new turbo engine, likely making it the quickest Mini yet.
When the Mini Clubman was resurrected for 2007, it was a superficial attitude adjustment for a brand known for promoting micro machines. Its stretched wheelbase and four doors gave Mini diehards room to grow, yet the Clubman stayed true to Mini's go-kart-like driving dynamics. That spunky temperament continues in the 2020 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works All4, which, despite some maturation over the years, has been significantly fortified with more than 300 horsepower.
Under the Clubman JCW's hood is the latest hot-rod variant of BMW's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, seductively code-named B48A20T1. With modified internals and a larger turbocharger, output is a strong 302 horsepower, a substantial 74-hp gain over the previous JCW model. Torque also increases by a similar margin, now up to 332 lb-ft at just 1750 rpm. Unfortunately, Mini no longer lets you row your own gears, as an Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission offering; all-wheel drive is standard as well. The eight-speed upshifts aggressively in the Mini's Sport drive mode, and the car will comically chirp its front tires during a one-two shift when launch control is engaged.

Porsche is celebrating 20 years of the 911 GT3, which first arrived in 1999.
Introduced during the 996-generation 911's production run, the GT3 has always been a lighter, more hard-core version of Porsche's iconic rear-engined 911 sports car.
A GT3 version of the new 992-generation 911 is sure to arrive sometime in the near future.
The Porsche 911 GT3 turns 20 this year. We've grown to love the lighter, faster, beefed-up and hunkered-down version of the 911 over the years. Oh, who are we kidding? We loved it the moment we first drove it.
The GT3 was first introduced for the 911's 996.1 generation in 1999. It featured a stiffer and lowered suspension, increased chassis bracing, 100 pounds of shed weight, and a power increase of 64 horsepower from a delightful 3.6-liter flat-six, for a total of 360 horsepower. Sadly, this first-generation 911 GT3 wasn't sold in the U.S. By the time the updated 996.2 GT3 arrived, Porsche graciously decided to bring it to America, and the rest was history. Since then, the GT3 recipe has left us coming back for more.
While Porsche is offering no birthday gift in the form of a 20th-anniversary special edition, the company is presenting some spectacular photos of 911 GT3s new and old to celebrate this milestone. At the Six Hours Of The Glen at Watkins Glen, Mazda Team Joest broke through for its first victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship when the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P driven by Jonathan Bomarito, Olivier Pla and Harry Tincknell finished just ahead of the No. 77 Mazda RT24-P of Timo Bernhard, Oliver Jarvis and Tristan Nunez. Highlighting how dominant the team’s performance was in Watkins Glen, Jarvis reset the Daytona Prototype international course record in qualifying.

For the second year in a row, Acura is introducing a new NSX paint color at Monterey Car Week.
The 2020 NSX will offer Indy Yellow, a bright followup to last year's Thermal Orange hue.
Customers can now order the 2020 NSX, with deliveries expected to begin in November.
Last year, it was Thermal Orange. This year, the Acura NSX gains a different eye-searing paint color: Indy Yellow. As it did in 2018, Acura is unveiling the new yellow color at Monterey Car Week, the festivities surrounding the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Is nothing new anymore?
Well, technically, Indy Yellow is new, even though its reveal is eerily similar to last year's bright NSX paint color and Acura deems it a "heritage color," meaning a hue inspired by one offered on the original NSX. According to Acura, that old-timey NSX color was named "Spa Yellow," although in some markets it was referred to as Indy Yellow, and it was offered between 1997 and 2003. The only news here is that, hey, you can now get an Indy/Spa Yellow NSX again.
Acura also is bringing back Berlinga Black, so NSX buyers have that to look forward to for the 2020 model year, as well. It's a good thing, too, since after a minor set of improvements for 2019, the NSX is otherwise unchanged this year.

Is the future of canyon carving going to be digital?
For quite a lot of people, driving is a chore, something they have to do to get to work or the grocery store. And for those drivers, a car is just a tool. But for others, driving is something to be enjoyed. However, it's getting hard to be a responsible driving enthusiast. There are a number of factors at play here. For one thing, it is becoming more and more socially unacceptable to speed on roads. Cities nationwide are implementing 25mph speed limits, and the evidence coming in shows that these limits do in fact have a measurable effect on the number of pedestrian casualties. But even out of town, the open roads aren't so empty anymore.
That makes it frustrating for other drivers—who don't want to contend with Ricky Racer and his Miata pinned to their bumper for miles and miles—and frustrating for Ricky, who just wants to have some fun. So the prospect of a Sunday-morning drive through the country starts to become less and less appealing.

Yes, a car this big and powerful can be fun on a narrow, twisty road.
I don't know if you've noticed, but cars keep getting bigger and heavier. There's no mystery to it; safety became a selling point, and airbags and energy-absorbing crash structures take up room and add weight. Naturally, we would expect that power would increase along with mass to prevent next year's model from being slower than this year's, but they're actually getting faster, too.
Consider the Golf GTI. When it launched in 1976, it had 110hp (81kW) and took 9.2 seconds to reach 62mph (100km/h). The 2018 version is exactly twice as powerful (220hp/162kW) and takes just 6.5 seconds to complete the same test.
This trend intensifies as you go up the performance ladder; despite the occasional call for a truce, the arms race continues in full swing. The conventional wisdom—which I myself have peddled on these very pages—is to wonder whether all this progress is actually a good thing. When Formula 1 cars grew too fast for the tracks upon which they raced, the sport moved to new, purpose-built tracks that could contain those speeds. But our roads haven't really changed; if anything, they're usually a lot more crowded than back in the day.
And so, the conventional wisdom goes, something like a Miata is way more suitable for a Sunday morning drive down a twisty road than an exotic with four times the power and six times the price. As is often the case with conventional wisdom, it turns out that's not actually true. One Sunday morning a few weeks ago, while in California, I found myself with the keys to a 2019 Ferrari Portofino and instructions that amounted to "don't bend it and please be back by 1pm."
The Portofino is Ferrari's entry-level car—"entry level" in this case starting at $215,000. It's a front (mid-)engined 2+2 with a folding hard top and a 592hp (441kW) version of Ferrari's F154 3.9L twin-turbo V8. (Other versions of this V8 can be found in the 488 and the GTC4Lusso T.) At 180.6 inches (4,586mm) long, 76.3 inches (1,938mm) wide, and 51.9 inches (1,318mm) tall, it's not particularly diminutive, although at 3,668lbs (1,664kg) it does weigh about 5% less than the model it replaced. It's a bigger car all around than the old Ferrari Daytona, for example, and positively dwarfs something like a Mazda MX-5 RF. Which is what made that particular Sunday morning all the more remarkable.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Does 0–100–0 MPH in 10.6 Seconds. Here's What That Means.
We place Ford's acceleration and braking claim in context.
Ford claims that the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 goes from zero mph to 100 mph and back to zero mph in 10.6 seconds.
From this number, which is meaningless without context, we've extrapolated that this new 760-hp muscle car could accelerate to 100 mph in 6.7 seconds.
The GT500 will go on sale this fall and starts at $73,995.
The 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 will rocket to 100 mph in an estimated 6.7 seconds. That's our takeaway from a Ford press release that shouts the 760-hp GT500 delivers supercar acceleration but fails to disclose an acceleration time.
Instead, Ford says the Shelby GT500 runs from zero to 100 mph and back to zero in 10.6 seconds. That zero-to-100-to-zero time essentially condenses two tests of interest into a single figure that's meaningless without context. Fortunately, Car and Driver's deep database of test results allows us to parse the number further. Zero-to-100-to-zero figures should ideally be conducted from a single test, rather than adding the results of separate acceleration and braking tests.

If you are at the Pennsylvania Collectors Club Convention, or nearby, you should stop by. M2 is doing what they love to do, leaving chases all over the place for collectors to find, and Hot Wheels is there too, showing off some upcoming product.
The photos do the talking. Entertainment, Pop Culture, Team Transport, and Car Culture mixes all set to hit soon. But it is the RLC stuff that has my attention. We have seen updates before, but it is clear the finishing touches have been made on many of them. Keep your eyes open for the latest Matchbox 5-packs. One I think most of you will want, another will be gobbled up by emergency and Subaru collectors, and the last I think will stick out like a sore, but festive, thumb.

The holiday pack is actually pretty cool, but a little early. Who honestly cares though? Those of us who want it will get it, and I am sure more will sell as the weather gets colder. The Rescue pack is a must because of the Subaru. The others go in the donation pile.
But that Autobahn set. Wow, that is nice. That is a true 5-for-5 when it comes to my collection. Seeing the Volvo V60 and Lamborghini LM002 return after a short absence is great, but I am particularly keen on seeing two 2007 Hall of Famers, the Audi R8 and Bentley Continental GT. It is a tremendous pack. Look for them, obviously, at Target.

Seattle makes history with electric garbage truck | Ars Technica
Recology has taken delivery of its first BYD 8R rear-loading class 8 garbage truck.
If you live in Seattle, your scheduled garbage pickup might be about to get a lot quieter. Recology, a West Coast waste management company, has just taken the delivery of its first fully electric garbage trucks. The vehicle is a class 8 truck—meaning the heaviest—made by BYD, with New Way supplying the Viper rear-loading garbage truck body. It's also apparently the first electric class 8 rear-loader in the country and the first of two that Recology ordered last year.
The BYD's specs make for very different reading compared to the average electric vehicles we cover. The powertrain is a 320kW (430hp), 1101Nm (812ft-lbs) electric motor, supplied by a 295kWh battery pack. However, it does have to carry around a truck with a 21,605lb (9,800kg) curb weight, and it can be optioned to a gross vehicle weight of either 57,500lbs (26,082kg) or 66,000lbs (29,937kg). (Interestingly, the photo BYD sent us has the GVW at 50,000lbs on the door.)
All that mass means the truck is limited to a 65mph (104km/h) top speed and a range of 56 miles (90km) and 600 pickups. Recharging the truck doesn't take as long as you think, despite all those kWh—nine hours connected to a 33kW AC outlet. The 8R supports either 120kW or 240kW DC fast charging, which takes 2.5 hours or 1.5 hours to recharge, respectively.

2019 Lexus LC500 Is the Soft Personal Luxury Coupe Perfected
Lexus's updated two-door star is polished, quick, and seductive.
We're not in the business of summarizing cars in single words, but Lexus's LC500 coupe makes it tempting to try: It's squishy. Maybe that isn't the word Lexus would prefer, but the curvaceous body does look as if it was squished into being, the V-8 engine thrusts the car forward in squishy smoothness, and the ride quality is oh so squishy.
For 2019, Lexus has made the LC500 even softer, retuning the adaptive dampers to deliver an even more buttery ride. The automaker also ironed out the at-times untoward gear change behavior we experienced from the 10-speed automatic transmission in our test of a 2018 LC500. Wisely, Lexus left the drop-dead styling alone inside and out, though we wish it had addressed the car's one major failing: the finicky touchpad controller (it works like the pad on a laptop) for the dashboard infotainment screen.

What I learned about cars watching all 8 Fast & Furious movies in 4 days | Ars Technica
The long-running franchise is a bottomless fount of vehicular wisdom.
As of last week, I had never seen any movies in the Fast & Furious franchise. I probably missed the first one in 2001 because I was planning my wedding or something else equally pedestrian. Then, before I knew it, there were seven more, and I had no chance of catching up.
But now the franchise has lasted longer than any of our president's marriages and has just birthed its first spin-off feature. So I have taken it upon myself to shotgun all eight movies in four days and report back to you what they have taught me about cars.
For the uninitiated, F&F more or less follows the car-crashing bromance of two shredded dude-bros played by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. The former is a cop-turned-crook-turned-cop-turned-vigilante secret agent. The latter is a street-racing crook who eventually—well, look, there isn't really a job description for what these guys end up doing by the end of the series. When not racing or knocking heads, their relationship consists of Diesel dispensing blue-collar wisdom in a monotone while Paul Walker stares adoringly.
In order to truly understand their relationship, I've ordered the movies below by following the series' internal chronology. Yes, this differs from the release dates. Just because these movies go real fast doesn't mean they always move in a straight line.

Hobbs & Shaw: A McLaren, a McGuffin, banter, and plenty of action | Ars Technica
Jason Statham, The Rock, and Idris Elba star in this Fast and Furious spinoff.
It's August, the height of summer, and that means it's time for the season's traditional tent pole action movies. Hobbs & Shaw, the new Fast & Furious spinoff starring Idris Elba, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Vanessa Kirby, and Jason Statham has just reached the cinemas, and to say I'd been looking forward to catching up with the franchise's latest is an understatement.
The Rock is Luke Hobbs, an "always gets his man" type working for the US Diplomatic Security Service. Statham plays Deckard Shaw, a former British spec-ops fellow. Both characters were introduced in previous movies as antiheroes, but after teaming up—kind of—in 2017's Fate of the Furious, the forces of destiny (or the writers) have thrown them together in a buddy movie.
I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but there's a McGuffin, and Brixton—played by Idris Elba—wants it. He wants it bad. The problem is, the McGuffin has been injected into Vanessa Kirby's Hattie Shaw, MI6 spy and Deckard's sister. Obviously neither the Shaws nor Hobbses want Brixton to get his hands on the McGuffin, and the story goes from there.
It's not groundbreaking stuff. Director David Leitch is not re-writing the rules of narrative cinema. The film is formulaic. But it's a formula that's proven to work in the past, and it does so again in Hobbs & Shaw. This is a movie with a lot of action. A lot. Ignore complaints that the trailer gives the movie away—in films like this the plot is merely something that keeps us moving from fight scene to set piece to fight scene to set piece. Oh, and because it's a Fast and Furious film, there's the occasional bit of wholesome positivity about the importance of family or working together as a team.
Hobbs and Shaw bicker at each other throughout the movie. It's wonderful. The Stath appears at times to reprise his Rick Ford character from Spy, and we've seen the Rock crack wise in everything from The Rundown to Baywatch, so it's no surprise they're both great at it here. Kirby succeeds in holding her own; refreshingly the movie avoids the damsel in distress trope. Elba's performance is less humorous, but that's OK—he's the bad guy. And there are some great supporting actors, including Eddie Marsan, Ryan Reynolds, Helen Mirren, and Cliff Curtis.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham learn the value of family in this silly spinoff
The Pitch: Remember The Fate of the Furious, where disgraced DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) formed an unlikely partnership with literal villain of the previous film Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham)? Well, here’s a whole movie of that. Now spies and fixers for their respective governments, Hobbs and Shaw are reluctantly drawn back together when Shaw’s sister, MI6 agent Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), steals a virus with the ability to “melt you from the inside” and goes on the lam. The two don’t like each other much, but circumstances force them to work together to save the world (and Hattie) from super-powered baddie Brixton (Idris Elba) — a guy with a billion dollars’ worth of cybernetic enhancements courtesy of a mysterious corporation and a hard-on for making the human race ‘evolve.’
Hobbs and the Shaws: It can be argued that Johnson and Statham saved the Fast & Furious franchise from obscurity. Johnson, long recognized as ‘franchise Viagra’, spiced up the series with his smoldering charisma and literal buckets of baby oil in Fast Five, and Statham proved a formidable foil for the family in Furious 7. Now, the two villains-turned-heroes are forced to work together in the wake of their test run as an action-comedy duo in Fate, and the results are at once pure Fast and decidedly un-Fast.
Structurally, there’s little that will surprise anyone who’s given a cursory glance to the buddy action movie genre: there are two bickering punch-men who have to set aside their differences to save the day, a doomsday device with a ticking clock, secret corporations with hidden facilities guarded by an army of faceless goons, and a growly but underdeveloped villain. (Not unlike his turn in Star Trek Beyond, Elba doesn’t get much to do here but growl about ‘the future’ and throw his considerable intensity into a workmanlike baddie role.) The spin here, then, is just doing those things really well, and getting two of the most charismatic macho men in show business to usher us through the chaos.

2020 BMW Alpina B7 Is the Ultimate 7-Series
BMW's tuning house builds a 7-series that's familiar yet faster than ever.
We can't yet verify the claimed 205-mph top speed of the 2020 Alpina B7, the latest iteration of the BMW 7-series to be substantially modified by the longstanding German tuning house. Trust us, we tried. But an indicated 186 mph was the most that traffic would allow on the unrestricted stretches of autobahn outside Munich. Still, the strength with which the updated B7 continued to pull at that velocity left us with little reason to doubt it as not only the fastest production sedan you can currently buy, but as the best BMW 7-series.
The world becomes a blurry place when you're traveling through it at 273 feet per second. Gentle bends in the road become actual curves. Trucks moving at a comfortable highway pace whiz by as if going in reverse. Braking events for distracted slow-moving commuters in the left lane generate colorful expletives. Yet the Alpina's size and refinement lend it a dogged sense of composure. It's a climate-controlled living room with warp drive. Wind noise and tire roar are calmingly moderate in the upper reaches of its speedometer, and there are welcome amounts of body control and steering precision with the Sport or Sport Plus drive modes activated. That the B7, even at near-full speed, was the most comfortable place we spent time during our recent trip to the unusually heat-soaked and air-conditioning-averse continent speaks to its capability as a premier luxury performance machine.

2020 Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder Is Pure Open-Air Excess
Power and drama converge with Lambo's latest droptop missile.
The Lamborghini Huracán has never been about top speed, and rarely have lap times been key to its mission. This is a car about theater. It's emotional and maybe overwrought, with a vivid voice that projects way back to the cheap seats. It's a diva with undeniable talent, even if sometimes it's tough to figure out what to do with that talent. And, with the 2020 Huracán Evo coupe and Spyder, all that drama has been amplified.
With the introduction of Lamborghini's Urus SUV, the Huracán's place in the lineup shifts a bit. It's no longer the company's biggest seller, nor is it the entry-level Lambo. The Evo update slightly refocuses the Huracán's character with an increased emphasis on sensory overload. All 2020 model-year Huracáns will be Evos, though there's always a chance some grander variant will appear if the company decides to goose up interest in the car.
Toward that end, all the substance of the outgoing Performante model, and then some, is now part of the Evo. So, as with the previous car, the exhaust outlets for the Evo's 5.2-liter V-10 are centered high on the tail for efficient flow and maximum aural satisfaction. Power is the same as in the Performante at 631 horsepower at 8000 rpm. The peak torque of 442 lb-ft still arrives at a frenetic 6500 rpm, and the engine's redline is at a nosebleed 8500 revs. Shared with the Audi R8, this is a purebred supercar engine from the bottom of its dry sump to the top of its aluminum cylinder heads. Supporting that engine is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system with a limited-slip rear differential.

2020 Porsche 911 Carrera – New 379-HP Base Model
The cheapest version of the 992-gen 911 costs $98,750 and has 379 horsepower.
Porsche revealed the "base" Carrera version of the 2020 911 coupe and cabriolet.
It uses a version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six found in the the Carrera S, making 379 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque in this application.
The coupe will cost $98,750 and the cabriolet will be $111,550 when they go on sale at the beginning of 2020.
UPDATE 7/31/19: The base Carrera is now on Porsche's online configurator. We have added a gallery below of screenshots of a Carrera with zero options, showing the smaller standard wheels and rectangular exhaust.
When the new 992-generation Porsche 911 debuted last fall, Porsche initially only released the Carrera S versions of the model. Porsche has now revealed the "base" 911 Carrera models, and while the Carrera might be the entry point of the 911 range, it still promises to be a hell of a performer.
The Carrera uses the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six as the S but with model-specific turbochargers. It makes 379 horsepower, nine more than the outgoing Carrera and 64 less than the 2020 Carrera S. The peak torque, 331 lb-ft, is the same as the 2019 car and 59 lb-ft short of the '20 Carrera S. As on the S, Porsche's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only available transmission at launch. We assume the same seven-speed manual Porsche has been promising for the 992 Carrera S will make it to the Carrera, too, but no product plans have been confirmed.

2020 Chevy Corvette C8 Convertible Spied, Revealing New Details
A prototype of the upcoming convertible Corvette was parked at the Concours d'Elegance of America.
We spied a prototype of the upcoming convertible version of the new C8 Corvette when leaving this years Concours d'Elegance of America.
The convertible will have a power-folding hardtop roof, setting it apart from the standard coupe that has a manually removable targa roof.
Expect the convertible to debut within the next few months.
As we were leaving the 2019 Concours d'Elegance of America this past weekend, we spotted a swarm of people surrounding a car in the parking lot. It was a new 2020 Chevy Corvette C8, but unlike the two C8s that Chevy had on display at the Concours, this one had a camouflage wrap covering up the roof and the rear end. Upon a bit of closer inspection, we realized that the parked prototype is the upcoming convertible variant that has yet to be officially revealed.

Pagani Huayra BC Roadster Is Beautiful Enough to Justify Its $3.4 Million Price
All Paganis are special, but this one may be more special than others because of obsessive attention to detail in every area.
The new roadster version of the Pagani Huayra is being revealed via the CSR Racing 2 app, but its real-life introduction is coming next month at Pebble Beach.
Only 40 copies of this twin-turbocharged V-12 roadster, nominally the final Huayra, will be built.
The BC is named for an Italian-American entrepreneur who was once the first to place an order with the fledgling Pagani firm.
The Pagani Huayra BC roadster will carry a factory-gate price of $3.4 million before local taxes. Even though only 40 will be produced, and they will be the last in the Huayra line, that is a ridiculous amount of money—more than triple what was charged for the first Huayra coupe in 2011.
And yet, we challenge you to spend a couple of minutes looking at these images and say that figure isn't entirely justified.
In fact, the BC roadster is the finest-looking memorial in the world. Like its coupe sister, named after an Italian-American entrepreneur called Benny Caiola, who was better known among gearheads for having one of the world's largest collections of Ferraris. When the tiny Italian supercar maker Pagani was starting out, Caiola was the man who placed the first ever order for one of its products. He died in 2010, but Horacio Pagani's gratitude to his debut customer means his initials have been incorporated into the ultimate version of the Huayra.

The 2020 Lotus Evora GT Is Quicker, Lighter, and Better-Looking
It’s a claimed 71 pounds lighter than the Evora 400 it replaces.
The new Lotus Evora GT replaces the previously available Evora 400.
It can weigh just over 3100 pounds, says Lotus, and will do zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
It starts at $96,950, which can quickly be inflated by expensive options.
Lotus has again updated its only car for sale in the United States, the Evora, introducing a new GT model that replaces the previous Evora 400 and the limited-run Evora 410. With a claimed top speed of 188 mph and curb weight of 3104 pounds, the Evora GT is the fastest and lightest Lotus available for sale.
The GT makes 416 horsepower from its Toyota-sourced supercharged 3.5-liter V-6, an increase of 16 hp from the Evora 400. Both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are available; when paired with the automatic, the V-6 makes 332 lb-ft of torque compared to 317 lb-ft with the stick. Lotus claims a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.8 seconds no matter the gearbox, 0.3 second quicker than it claims for the 400. When equipped with the manual, the GT gets a Torsen limited-slip differential.

McLaren Rolls Out a Special 600LT Spider Pikes Peak Collection
The special-edition McLaren 600LT Spiders are outfitted in bespoke liveries to celebrate the Pikes Peak hill-climb.
Commissioned by McLaren's dealer in Denver, Colorado, through McLaren Special Operations (MSO), six specially equipped 600LT Spiders celebrate the historic Pikes Peak hill-climb.
Matte black and gold accents dress up the exteriors while additional satin gold embellishments do the same inside.
All six come with the MSO Club Sport package which adds additional carbon-fiber and titanium parts.
A sextet of special edition McLaren 600LT Spiders has been outfitted in bespoke liveries to celebrate the historic Pikes Peak hill-climb. All six cars wear matte black and gold stripes on their hoods and roof, and they all roll on gold-colored Speedline wheels.
Satin gold accents adorn the interiors as well; a center stripe on the steering wheel as well as the paddle shifters for the automatic transmission are both highlighted in gold, as is the special-edition Pikes Peak embroidery on the headrest of each of the sport seats. All six come with a dedication plaque certifying they are part of the extremely limited group.
All of the six cars pictured here come equipped with optional MSO Club Sport package, which adds a host of carbon-fiber body parts, carbon-fiber racing seats, and titanium wheel bolts. None receive any additional performance-enhancing tech–not that they need them, since they come with the same 592-hp twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine as the standard 600LT and 600LT Spider.
The cars were commissioned through McLaren Special Operations by the Denver McLaren dealer and will be sold to six lucky buyers for an undisclosed sum. The unembellished 600LT Spider carries a price of $256,500.

2020 Audi S6 Makes 444 HP and Starts under $75,000
The 2020 S6 drops the V-8, but its turbo V-6 attempts to assuage us with more torque. The new model arrives in the U.S. later this year.
The new Audi S6 is here with a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 that replaces its predecessor's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine.
This V-6 engine makes slightly less horsepower than the V-8, at 444 hp, but more torque, at 443 lb-ft.
The 2020 S6 will go on sale in Europe this summer and arrive in the U.S. by the end of 2019.
UPDATE 7/26/19: Audi has announced U.S. specs and pricing for the S6. It starts at $74,895 for the Premium Plus trim level and $78,795 for the Prestige trim level. This story has been updated accordingly.
Engine downsizing has come to the hotted-up version of Audi's A6 sedan. While the old S6 used a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, the new model that's based on the latest C8-generation A6 adopts the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 used in the RS5. The new engine makes 444 horsepower, slightly less than before, but torque rises by 37 lb-ft, to 443 lb-ft. Unlike the RS5, Audi says that this engine in the S6 uses a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an electric supercharger.
The sole transmission choice will be a conventional torque-converter eight-speed automatic transmission. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard, and there are all sorts of performance-enhancing extras available including adaptive dampers, four-wheel steering, and a torque-vectoring rear differential. Audi claims the car can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Eyeing the sweet spot between performance and practicality, we wrangle possibly the best all-around Mustang for 40,000 miles of servitude.
There's one question we'll surely never be asked during our 40,000-mile evaluation of the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt: "What car is that?" That's because not only is the Ford Mustang one of the most recognizable cars on the road but also because the dark-green pony car was immortalized in pop culture when Steve McQueen hurled the original 1968 Mustang GT fastback through San Francisco in the iconic movie Bullitt.
Before all the haters bemoan the film's many shortcomings and the modern car's nostalgic shtick, they should know that the 2019 Bullitt Mustang is more than a cash grab that panders to sentimental baby boomers. In fact—cheesy branding aside—we believe it could be the best all-around Mustang ever. With the perfect balance of performance enhancements and desirable features, the Bullitt edition is an excellent driver's car that truly can be enjoyed every day. Likewise, its unmistakable appearance helps it stand out on the street better than any current Mustang not wearing a Shelby badge.

4 Reasons Why the 2020 Mid-engine Corvette is Superior
One of the first things we learned about the 2020 Corvette Stingray was its mid-engine configuration. Specifically, it’s a rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive car. The engine is placed in between the cabin and rear axle, driving the rear wheels.
Despite the numerous mid-engine concepts and Zora Arkus-Dunkov’s legacy, all of the 7 generations before the C8 had the engine in the front.
It took 66 years to finally make a production mid-engine Corvette. And you can rest assured, it was not an easy decision to make.

Within a radically evolving world now flush with Lamborghini SUVs and mid-engine Chevy Corvettes, there's little point in fighting the fact that, with the 2020 2-series Gran Coupe, BMW will be selling its first (gulp) front-wheel-drive–based car in the United States. Tradition, at least in today's automotive universe, is anything but sacred. Curious as to what we can expect when this smaller-than-a-3-series four-door goes on sale early next year, we jumped on BMW's invitation to drive a pair of pre-production development mules in Germany.

Remember that fun and zany 1976 film The Gumball Rally? It featured a race across the United States by several unusual characters in various cars. It wasn’t just a comedy film; it influenced other films and real-life races such as the Gumball 3000 in Europe.
Begun in 1999 by designer/racer/visionary Maximillion Cooper, the Gumball 3000 has become an annual 3000-mile rally through multiple countries. Drivers in the annual event include celebrities and even royalty! Entrants can steer their vehicle of choice to various check-ins at famous landmarks en route to the finish line. Prizes are said to be awarded for the following: most original car, most rock ‘n’ roll team, best wrap design, and for special actions during the rally. The contestant who represents the best example of the event’s good-hearted spirit receives the coveted "Gumball Spirit Trophy."
For 2019, the Gumball 3000 route runs from Mykonos, Greece to Ibiza, Spain. Just in time for the RLC and Gumball 3000 sale today. I was wondering why the RLC was selling these on a day other than the standard Tuesday, and now I know why. After I made the video I learned it is available today on the Gumball 3000 site as well.

If you have a car, odds are, the engine under the hood is an internal combustion engine. That means, among other things, that every few hundred miles or so, you pull into a gas station and fill up the car’s fuel tank with gasoline or diesel. That’s how it’s been since the first cars hit the road.
There are other ways to power a car – and 100 years from now, who knows what will be under the hood. But today, and for the foreseeable future, it’s the internal combustion engine that will be getting us where we need to go.
Is that a bad thing? Nope.
Nope – because it’s a proven, reliable, affordable engine – and because the internal combustion engine keeps getting better.
Better, as in 15 percent more fuel-efficient – and from the same engine, 15 percent more oomph (or torque, if you want to get technical). And it’s the engineers at Mazda and their new SKYACTIV-X engine which gets those new numbers. We’ve mentioned it before, but today we thought we’d do a little Engine 101, and explain (a bit) how Mazda got to their new version of a classic.
The short (really short) explanation, is that Mazda combined a diesel and a gasoline engine into one engine.

We Rode Shotgun in the New 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8
From the passenger seat, the mid-engined C8 feels sharper, more focused, and more capable.
Beneath the chatter is the constant low-frequency thrum of a Chevy small-block rising and falling through its rev range. It's interrupted frequently but briefly by shifts from the eight-speed dual-clutch Tremec transmission—quickened by cutting engine spark—to which it's bolted. And now, finally, the source of that thrum—a fifth-generation 6.2-liter V-8 named, of course, LT2—comes from behind our heads.
We're riding shotgun in mid-engined Corvette Stingray development mules on rural Michigan back roads. The three cars in this convoy represent the full breadth of the Stingray's chassis options. There's an FE1 base car; an FE3, which incorporates the Z51 performance package with passive dampers and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires; and an FE4, which is the top-level Stingray combining the Z51 package with magnetorheological adaptive dampers. Similar to the C7 before it, the C8's Z51 package adds an electronic limited-slip differential, bigger (iron) brake rotors and calipers, and different transmission ratios. But now every C8 Corvette gets a dry-sump-equipped engine.

2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO Shows Godzilla Is Still Evolving
Nissan's technology flagship wears improved brakes and tires and more carbon fiber into its second decade in the U.S.
If you were hoping for an all-new Nissan GT-R, we're sorry to disappoint you. Well, it's really not our fault that this is the same GT-R you've known for a decade. It's been a long 10 years for the GT-R—for all of us, actually. Competitors have caught up, surpassed, and made Nissan's big supercoupe seem like an anachronism. But Nissan hasn't neglected the GT-R. In the interest of keeping it relevant, the company has bestowed incremental powertrain, chassis, and design changes. The 2020 GT-R NISMO is the latest and greatest evolution of the GT-R, aimed more at the track than ever before.
Now, if you were hoping for more power under the hood, there isn't any. Not that the NISMO needed more horsepower, as the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6 remains at a seriously engaging 600 horsepower. The turbochargers are new and have the same part numbers as the ones used on Nissan's GT-R GT3-class race car. Chosen for their efficiency and responsiveness, the new turbos help the GT-R's V-6 force you right into the new lighter Recaro seats in which we drove in Europe. These won't be coming stateside; we'll soldier on with the current seats. While you're hurtling down the road, you might notice that the mighty V-6 pulls through only six gears. That's because the gearbox dates back to a time when six ratios were deemed sufficient. At least the shifts are quick, and with launch control initiated, the big coupe hurtles to 60 mph in about 3.0 seconds. The transaxle sounds a bit quieter than before, too. The clunks and whirrs of previous GT-Rs appear to have been exorcised. Switch the transmission to the newly revised R-mode, and it downshifts under braking, holds gears through corners, and generally makes using the paddles superfluous.

The C8 Corvette has finally emerged from cover.
TUSTIN, Calif.—On Thursday night, in a 1,000-foot-long (300m) hangar packed with hundreds of attendees, the world got its first proper look at the next Chevrolet Corvette. New for model year 2020, it's the eighth version of "America's sportscar" and one that's radically different to any production Corvette of the past. In the quest for even sharper handling, the engineering team realized the engine would have to move behind the cabin.
This change has been an open secret for some years now, probably to prepare the fiercely loyal and just-as-opinionated fanbase that once freaked out just because the shape of the taillights changed with the debut of the previous generation car. It's an idea Corvette has played with since the early days, when Zora Arkus-Duntov was in charge. Starting with CERV I in 1960 there has been a stream of experimental concepts with the engine between driver and rear wheels, but none ever made the leap to production car. How times change.

The mid-engine C8 Stingray is the quickest, most powerful entry-level Corvette ever—and the first without a manual transmission.
Folks, it's finally here: The 2020 Corvette Stingray, the first of the C8 generation, and the long, long-anticipated beginning of the 'Vette's mid-engine era. Chevy just debuted the car at a press event in Southern California, and revealed performance specs for the very first time. Here's what you need to know about the new generation of Corvette.

The car presented to journalists today is the C8 Stingray, the base model of the new generation. It's powered by a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8, dubbed the familiar LT2, now producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the optional performance exhaust. Yep, that makes the C8 Stingray the most powerful base-model Corvette ever.
It's also the quickest: Chevy didn't provide exact performance numbers, but the automaker did say that the C8 Stingray will do 0-60 in less than three seconds when equipped with the Z51 Performance Package. That is astoundingly fast—on par with the earliest Bugatti Veyron—and it's a testament to the capabilities made possible by the switch to the mid-engine layout. Remember, Corvette engineers have been saying for years that they'd maxed out the acceleration capabilities of the front-mid-engine C7 chassis. This huge improvement in acceleration puts the base-model C8 Stingray on par with the top-dog C7 ZR1, the 755-horsepower, huge-downforce, supercharged-to-hell monster of the previous generation.

The 2020 Chevy Corvette C8 Will Start at Less Than $60,000
Mark Reuss announced the C8's base price during the reveal of the new supercar.
General Motors president and global product chief Mark Reuss announced that the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 will start under $60,000 when it goes on sale late this year.
That will make the C8 just a few thousand dollars more than the base price of the current C7 model.
The new C8 is faster, more advanced, and more luxurious than the car it replaces.
During the launch event of the all-new Chevy Corvette on Thursday night, July 18, GM's president and global product chief, Mark Reuss, announced that the mid-engined supercar will start at less than $60,000 when it goes on sale in late 2019. We expect that means the C8 will have a starting price at $59,995 before any destination or other required charges, meaning it will really be a bit over the $60K mark once the dotted lines are signed.
Still, even considering any additional fees, that's a hell of a deal. The current C7 Corvette starts at $56,995 including its $1095 destination charge. Beyond just the placement of the engine, the new C8 is a huge step up from the C7, with more power, a sub-three-second zero-to-60-mph time, a much more luxurious interior, and a lot more standard and available features. The C8 convertible, which also was teased by Reuss, will probably command a premium of at least a few thousand dollars.

In the automotive-design world, it doesn’t get much more pressure-packed than designing the mid-engined Corvette. It’s a mythical beast on which auto enthusiasts have been projecting their fantasies for decades, even lifetimes. If a unicorn is to finally step out from the shadows, it damn well better not look like an old mule with a horn. The team members behind the design and development of the C8 were aware of the expectations. It weighed on them. For years.
Executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter says that the mid-engined C8 Corvette couldn’t be the wild fantasy of the team’s inner adolescents. It had to be a durable design, one with a reasonably long shelf life. It still had to be immediately recognizable as a Corvette, despite having new proportions. But it couldn’t be retro, because that’s a design dead end. It had to be a sort of 1963 moment: a radical redesign of the shape that opens a new era in the model’s lineage and that telegraphs the sea change beneath its skin. And, heaven forfend, it could not, under any circumstances, be boring. Oh, it also had to have enough bandwidth to serve as an easy daily driver, an accommodating road-trip car, and an occasional track car.

The Mid-Engined 2020 Chevy Corvette Is Here
The new C8 Corvette is an engineering moonshot, a marketing leap of faith, and a statement about what an American sports car can truly be.
The eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette is the first one that's mid-engined, and there are other changes that will make it vastly different from its predecessors.
There is no manual transmission—not even as an option—and a 6.2-liter V-8 "LT2" engine will be standard on the base Stingray model.
It goes into production in late 2019 and should be on sale shortly after that.
Anticipation can be the best thing about a new toy. Handling that shiny object, still in its blister pack. Goosebumps ripple across your skin; your pupils dilate. The toy comes out, and the serious business of fun begins. Now that Chevrolet has revealed the mid-engined 2020 Corvette, will the joy of playing with it exceed the 60 or so years of anticipatory excitement? Or will it be buried in the sandbox next week?
Any all-new Corvette is significant. The really big fuss is that this one, the eighth generation (C8), has its engine behind the passengers for the first time in Corvette history. It's mid-engined, like a Ferrari F8 Tributo or a McLaren 720S. While that change is obvious, there are subtler changes that are nearly as heretical.
