Marc Seeger’s review of Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility
It’s a great summary of the somewhat unique culture at Netflix. The book talks about how Netflix (and the author) thinks about compensation, about how to evaluate performance and other ways you can form a culture by giving the right incentives. It is very pleasant read and makes copious use of summaries at the end of chapters. The only thing I miss is a discussion about how the Netflix model is able to correct for bad management. It mostly discusses the case of good management having to deal with hires that are not a good fit for the job, but doesn’t go into detail how employees will be able to correct for a manager that is not a fit.
