Peter Loggins - On The Importance Of Learning Other Dances Aside From The Lindy Hop : Atilio Menéndez : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive
Loggins on how to dance at a real jazz club where most people are there to listen, and some history related to the old time ballrooms. Plus some advocacy for learning stuff other than lindy (maybe I should brush up my rusty ballroom skills).

86ing a.k.a. Throwing Someone Out Of Your Venue | It's The Way That You Do It
After all the discussions on harassment, I'm coming to the conclusion that the hardest thing is not finding the right words for your code of conduct, but actually dealing with the nasty business of having to tell someone they're doing something wrong and maybe they can't come back. Here's a post from someone who's done it.

FOLLOWERS FIRST - Jazz As Movement
Nathan Bugh writes: "Not only is following active and difficult, it is also the prerequisite for leading. When it comes to learning and teaching basic, lead/follow skills, the follower's technique is a much more immediate priority than the leader's technique. Her dancing ability, her awareness, strength, balance, use of the floor, etc. are the elements from which spring her following ability AND the leader's leading ability. She is the beginning of the logic in the dance. In class, the followers empower the leaders to lead and to learn. Leaders judge their progress according to the results that their partners embody. Followers are the focus of the lead/follow process, and they have to follow before the leaders can lead."

What is frame?
"My best definition is that its a social convention for how we hold our bodies so our partner knows where we are in space." I like 619shepard's comment because it's less about modelling people as springs and more about how there are conventions which are taught (some of which will involve behaving like a mass on a spring some of the time, to be sure).

The science and magic of Lindy Hop | Andy Connelly | Science | theguardian.com
"Great partner dancers may not know it but they are masters of space, time and Newton's laws of motion." Of course we know it: for example, I've decided my "dance name" is "The Oncoming Storm". (I also suspect I know who the Alistair credited at the end is, as he's a Cambridge person).

Swing Dance Frame as Non-Newtonian Fluid | Jason Sager
Neat analogy for the way some moves work by resisting impulses (so that they are transferred and provide a net impetus to the follower) but not resisting smooth movement.

Ambidancetrous: The Blog — "We don't want to make people uncomfortable." (aka, "What about teh menz?!")
"Ultimately, some of the worry that some straight guys will be uncomfortable dancing with other men (or being led by a woman) may be justified." Het guys: you lost the oppression Olympics, so your comfort and consent about who touches you is less important than our plan to build a utopia through dance. PROBLEMATIC. Well, OK, that bit rubbed me up the wrong way. But seriously, I think an "ambidancetrous" dance scene would be less "problematic" if the expectations (and how they differ from pretty much every other scene) were made clear up front. What I expect would happen then is that if you insisted every lesson was ambidancetrous, you'd never get enough people to make a viable community. Maybe it'd work as an option within an established scene, though.

Carsie Blanton's Baby Can Dance - OFFICIAL VIDEO - YouTube
Nice song, cool lindy in the video (almost all lead and followed apparently, there's no choreography apart from one tiny bit) illustrating that it's not all about the aerials.

Random Thoughts on The Roles of Leading and Following « Swungover
Via CW at Lindy. There seems to be much more debate about this than there is in ballroom, perhaps because ballroom's more conservative anyway, perhaps because it's settled by "you're shorter, therefore you're going backwards so I can see over you".
