If referring to U.S. dollar figures, then it's a different story, one that has the United States as the protagonist. According to a Northern Sky Research (NSR) market forecast, North America is driving revenues in terms of subscribers. Despite Asia having a much larger population, it really boils down to economics and, comparatively, disposable income levels in Asia are not as high as that of the United States. "

"When considering the price point, the magic number that unlocks the barrier holding back satellite changes country to country. Satellite needs to match fiber, and both need to be at a much lower price.

"In the United States, it's $60, which is still high, however, people are willing to pay that premium. Comparatively, in the Philippines, for example, a fiber connection costs around $50 a month. But looking at the mass markets, the price will have to go down to around $10 to $15 – and this will still be challenging," says Del Rosario. "

“If these [LEO] constellations are manufactured efficiently and launched on time, if the ground terminals are priced at $150-300 per unit, if they get market access to the countries they’re targeting, and if they drastically reduce the price to the consumer, say to $10-15, then the impact will be huge. But there are a lot of ‘ifs’ riding on this. Getting all this right, then yes, they will hit Asia’s mainstream market, and that is huge,” explains Del Rosario.

FCC Issues Inter-Satellite Data Relay Network License to Audacy; Non-GEO Market Access to O3b - Via Satellite - June 2018
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted a license to Audacy that authorizes the space communications company operate the world’s first commercial inter-satellite data relay network.

The data relay network will utilize two ground stations, in San Francisco and Singapore, as well as three Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites scheduled to launch in 2019. With this network, Audacy hopes the spectrum will be able to provide real-time downlink, continuous monitoring, and always-on command services to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft.

Along with the Audacy license, the FCC has also granted O3b’s request to modify its existing U.S. market access grant by adding new non-geostationary satellites and new frequency bands to provide broadband communication services in the U.S.

"SES, has signed a single-award Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), low-latency, High Throughput Satellite (HTS) services. The total amount of all orders placed against the BPA cannot exceed $516.7 million over a five-year period of performance from May 1 this year to April 30, 2023.

With this agreement, DOD customers will have the opportunity to access SES’ O3b MEO services worldwide. The BPA scope of work covers managed services, including HTS capacity and broadband services, gateway services, and monitoring and control services, as well as satellite terminals, field service representative support, training and terrestrial backhaul."

According to the University of Surrey, the first of two capture experiments will discharge a net at a deployed target CubeSat, while the second will launch a harpoon at a target plate made of representative satellite panel materials. The third experiment will leverage vision-based navigation to rendezvous with another CubeSat using cameras and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). The RemoveDebris spacecraft will then deploy a large dragsail to demonstrate accelerated de-orbiting, after which it will burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Although constellation operators are the company’s main focus, Gilmour said it is targeting a relatively small slice of market share, aiming at just one launch per month for the first few years. As such, Gilmour said he isn’t particularly anxious about the increasing competition from both established and NewSpace launch providers. “[I’m] not very worried about the old established players, as they have cost models that aren’t competitive for the small launch market,” he said. “Also not that concerned about Virgin or Rocket Lab, as I believe the market is large enough to support a number of small satellite launch companies for now. Goldberg: For sure. It will be terabits of capacity. We have a very flexible, high throughput, low latency architecture. It is a broadband play. We will target many of the same verticals we are serving today on the enterprise side, including mobility, government and cellular and IP backhaul requirements. Initially we will focus less on direct-to-consumer services, as I believe there has to be further development of the user antenna to make that more cost competitive.

SES was the talk of World Satellite Business Week (WSBW) late last year when it announced a major new strategic initiative, mPower, through O3b. SES has contracted with Boeing Satellite Systems, to build seven super-powered Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites. The constellation will have 30,000 fully-shapeable and steerable beams that can be shifted and switched in real time to align with customers’ quickly changing growth opportunities.

... You have to remember that O3b was initially designed to provide very high throughput to a small number of clients each with very high bandwidth requirements. The evolution we were looking for was one where we could further advance the throughput performance while achieving greater flexibility and scalability on the bandwidth in order to serve and empower a much larger market.

... The first seven satellites of the new system will bring multi-terabits of productivity. We can scale this up as we add new assets into the constellation.

Sabbagh: The answer is yes, and it is the predicament of every industry where there is a well-established playbook that yields rich economic returns.

VIA SATELLITE: What technology innovation do you think could make the most difference to your business going forward?

Spengler: Antennas are key. One of the challenges we have had in satellite communications, with the exception of Direct-to-Home (DTH), has been that the antenna systems have been pretty simple as they are receive-only. But when it comes to two-way satellite communications, the positive is that they can be quickly deployed to build out infrastructure. The negative is that it is still too complex and too costly. Advancements in flat panel antennas and electronically steerable antennas is really critical to enable the ease of installation and operation.

.. You also need to enable interconnectivity and interoperability between networks. Satellite solutions need to become part of a much broader telecoms infrastructure.

VIA SATELLITE: Has the satellite industry reached a key inflection point in your mind? Will we see more change in the next 10 years than we saw in the previous 30?

Spengler: If you broaden that subject to society and technology in general, I think the answer is yes. I think the pace of change, not just in our industry, but overall is accelerating.

"2017 was a banner year for the satellite industry in many respects. 2018 could prove to be even more momentous, as the smallsat megaconstellations that have been under development for years finally emerge — along with the dedicated smallsat launch vehicles that will serve them. In an interview with Via Satellite, Northern Sky Research (NSR) analyst Carolyn Belle laid out her expectations for the year ahead"

"Although its bondholders’ failed to approve the highly anticipated merger with OneWeb, Intelsat will push forward with its plans to offer hybrid services from both Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO), said Kurt Riegelman, senior vice president of sales and marketing. In an interview with Via Satellite, Riegelman said Intelsat will still work closely alongside OneWeb in the future, leveraging both companies’ constellations to build out services in new and established verticals.

Intelsat’s board of directors approved the merger agreement back in February and expected the deal to close by the third quarter of this year. Unfortunately, even after numerous delays, Intelsat’s bondholders chose not to accept the proposed bond exchange deal before deadline."

VIA SATELLITE: Given the influx of new players in the satellite industry and the new Low and Medium Earth Orbit (LEO/MEO) players that you have been outspoken against, what does the future hold for a player like ABS?

Choi: As I said many times before … I doubt the majority will ever launch and even if they do most will fail. Why? Let me ask a few questions: Where do they have market access, ground facilities to install their gateways, and most importantly who are their customers? They say they will fill the niche of serving the unconnected but they won’t be competitive to 5G. These are basic questions investors ask. This is why most will not get financing because they cannot answer them. As an example, which Export Credit Agency (ECA) is backing these crazy projects with no customers? Not a single one thus far. Look at what happened when the last company got funded on “hot air:” NewSat collapsed much to the chagrin of EXIM bank. I seriously doubt they want to relive that kind of experience again, this time on a much larger scale. So, the answer to your question is no, ABS will not be materially impacted.

Security Flaws in Inmarsat Maritime Platform Revealed by IOActive - Via Satellite - Oct 2017
"IOActive has released a new advisory documenting critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities affecting Stratos Global’s AmosConnect communication shipboard platform. Stratos Global, which Inmarsat acquired in 2009, provides communication services to thousands of ship vessels globally."

"The flaws IOActive discovered include blind Structured Query Language (SQL) injection in a login form, and a backdoor account that provides full system privileges that could allow remote unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code on the AmosConnect server."

"According to IOActive, it informed Inmarsat of the vulnerabilities in October 2016, and completed the disclosure process in July of 2017. Inmarsat has since discontinued the AmmosConnect 8.0 (AC8) version of the platform but had also issued a security patch to reduce the risk potentially posed."

Inmarsat: “It is important to note that this vulnerability would have been very difficult to exploit as it would require direct access to the shipboard PC that ran the AC8 email client. . . ."

UrtheCast, e-Geos Collaborate On Optical and SAR Products - Via Satellite - Oct 2017
UrtheCast, its subsidiary Deimos Imaging and e-Geos, a company owned by Telespazio and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), announced a strategic partnership to offer a combination of joint optical and radar sensors with ground stations. According to the parties involved, the collaboration will allow observation of the Earth day and night, regardless of weather conditions, and is intended to provide a constant asset monitoring service.

The combination of high-resolution radar data with medium and very-high resolution optical imagery is expected to benefit users in a diverse group of sectors including emergency services and the oil and gas industry, among others.
