A new Snapchat feature lets publishers create live stories out of users' posts - Digiday
Snap is launching a new feature that will let media companies access public posts made by Snapchat users and package them into editions centering on live events, breaking news and other topics.
The feature is called Curated Our Stories and is an extension of Snapchat’s public live stories,

How to make the most of Stories, whatever social platform you are publishing on | Media news
new report from IMNA states that the format could represent a ‘journalism shift’, with a new type of storytelling that highlights personalities, amplifies unheard voices, builds suspense and makes user-generated content more accessible to publishers.
"Media companies that ignore the rise of this trend and continue obsessing over news feeds and timeline views may be left behind,” write Yusuf and Sumaiya Omar, authors of the report and co-founders of Hashtag Our Stories.

Snapchat ends publisher subsidies, but NowThis will launch the app’s first realtime breaking news channel » Nieman Journalism Lab
It also moved users’ Stories out of Discover, lowering the incentive for people who primarily use the messaging app to communicate with their friends to visit the Discover side of the app. And recently Snap started telling publishers it would end its licensing deals, moving from paying publishers upfront for producing their daily and weekly content to focusing solely on splitting advertising revenue from their content. That was a leading cause for CNN’s exit.

How The Economist engages young audiences on Snapchat Discover | Media news
Rohr explained that when setting out to create interactive snaps, 10 second looping videos, the team, whose five members are on both sides of the Atlantic, decided to produce deep-dives into single topics as opposed to trying to cover a variety of different issues.

"We made them like the 'ultimate cheat sheet' – providing the audience with the toolkit, vocabulary and context that they need to understand the rest of our journalism," she said.

"Most publishers are showing make-up tips and celebrity news but we were not afraid to cover big stories that we thought should be on these young people's radars."

As Facebook retreats from publishers, Snapchat is rolling out a publisher charm offensive - Digiday
It’s been three years since Snapchat created the Discover section that features curated sections by a several dozen hand-picked media companies, including CNN, People and BuzzFeed. But CNN and Comedy Central have pulled back in recent months, with CNN saying the revenue wasn’t big enough, and one view is that Snapchat is worried that more publishers will flee the platform. Separate from Discover, Snapchat recently announced a redesign that would separate user content from media publishers’ and brands’ content, which could diminish those companies’ visibility in the app.

This Is the Data Snapchat Doesn’t Want You to See
When disaster struck, Snap Maps also became a powerful tool for watching real-time breaking news unfold. Publications like Wired and Quartz praised the feature’s ability to act as a window into what was going on in the world.

Members of Snapchat’s news team—including Snapchat’s head of news, Peter Hamby—met with groups of journalists last fall to promote the feature as a news-gathering tool.

Yet despite all the hype and promotion, Snap Maps’ DAU numbers have been relatively weak and declined sharply post-launch.

Snap says it's going to start paying top creators - The Verge
For comparison, YouTube allows anyone with over 10,000 channel views to make money off ads. Other social platforms, like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter have no formal system in place for creators to make money. Instead, they rely on sponsored posts. This could make Snapchat a more lucrative and appealing platform, but with only 178 million daily active users, creators' potential reach is far less. Vine died because its user base was small, and Twitter delayed its rollout of promoted, sponsored content.

67% of Americans use social media to get some of their news; Twitter and Snapchat for news are getting more popular » Nieman Journalism Lab
— In 2017, 74 percent of Twitter users said they got news from Twitter, up 15 percent from last year, possibly thanks to President and tweeter-in-chief Donald Trump, who has taken to making official U.S. policy statements there.

— 32 percent of YouTube users report getting news there, up from 21 percent last year.

— 29 percent of Snapchat users now report using it for news, up from 17 percent in 2016. This should be a welcome number for all the publishers investing massively in Snapchat Discover.

Why I’m leaving Snapchat and so are all your friends – Charged Tech – Medium
Instagram, somehow, has innovated on Snapchat’s core ideas at an incredible clip: instead of making you see a story sequentially, you can tap either side of the screen to skip forward or back. You can swipe to get between stories, creating what amounts to an endless loop of content, or you can tap and hold to freeze-frame it on what you’re seeing.
Not only that, but Instagram’s added other content types already: live streaming, boomerang, hands-free and a bunch more. It cloned stickers, added filters and assumably, will soon launch face masks with that handy acquisition it made a few years ago. You can tag your friends directly in a picture, and even link out to external websites. Frankly, Instagram has made Snapchat better faster than Snapchat could make Snapchat better.

Publishers are also using Snapchat to develop relationships with readers. My friend Taylor Lorenz, director of emerging platforms at The Hill, told me she has long conversations with Snapchat followers about what they should be covering. In September, she used the platform to ask students to share how they spent their summers, then featured the best responses in a blog post. Engagement editors have been using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for years to do these types of callouts. Finally, fact-checking is the new black - American Press Institute
In terms of web traffic, debate-day was NPR’s best day ever. That is until Tuesday, which became its new best day ever, due to follow-up coverage of the debate. On debate day, NPR’s fact-checking content got 7.4 million views from more than 6 million users, along with 16,400 content “shares” using NPR.org’s share tools, said NPR publicist Ben Fishel. On Tuesday, 1 in 5 people who clicked on NPR’s annotated debate transcript read the entire 40-page document — a completion rate that is “something I’ve never seen, not only here but anywhere I’ve ever worked in journalism,” NPR developer David Eads told me.
The debate also sparked two days of record traffic at PolitiFact. The site had more page views on the day of the debate than any other day in PolitiFact’s 9-year history, said executive director Aaron Sharockman. “That record lasted one day. We beat it Sept. 27 and crossed more than 2 million page views,” Sharockman said in an e-mail. PolitiFact also reached 2.26 million people on Facebook on Monday, and added 18,500 followers in less than 24 hours to their brand-new Twitter account.
At The Washington Post, traffic to debate-night fact-checking was more than double the traffic from previous debates in this election cycle, Kessler said. He added that, in terms of unique visitors, the Post’s live fact-checking of Trump’s acceptance speech in July remains the Fact Checker blog’s biggest live event — “more than three times the entire best month of the 2012 [election] cycle,” Kessler said.

How CNN Digital and The Odyssey approach audience data
Part of their edge has been how they use data to inform the structure of content: By focusing on building a platform, they learn more and more about people’s interests and reading habits. Then, they bring that information to the creators. Besides personal emails and internal memos, they've baked this into the writing experience with a wizard that will nudge and provide useful data passively. It’s advice about quality, length and sentiment but “we're not going to make them start creating clickbait headline,” said Burns.

The acquisitions can often be about speed and capability, so we'll do a detailed analysis of the way that we want to play in a particular marketplace and at the end of the day if we see opportunity and it's quicker to get there by acquisition, we'll do that.

Snapchat releases a new web tool for making custom geofilters | The Verge
Snapchat has let you create custom geofilters for events since February, but until now you've needed image editing software to make one. Today the company rolled out a tool for creating on-demand geofilters on the web, using templates for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations. The filters, which can cost as little as $5 for a party in a small geographic area, will appear alongside the other geofilters inside the app when your guests post snaps during your event. Snapchat's tool lets you customize the filter's color palate and the text, and offers preview images to show you what your guests' snaps will look like once the filter is live.

Pics and It Didn’t Happen – The New Inquiry
So whereas Instagram merely evokes the look of scarcity, temporary photography by definition enforces a certain rarity that imbues the image with a heightened aura of meaningfulness. Snapchat inspires memory because it welcomes the possibility of forgetting. Instead of being shared with a large number of people on a popular website, temporary photographs are taken specifically for and shared with one other person or a small group of people. The meaning of the photo doesn’t rest just in its content but in the choice to restrict its consumption — the choice to send that particular image to that particular person at that particular time, to the exclusion of other images, other recipients, and other times.

The ephemerality sharpens viewers’ focus: Once received, a Snapchat count-down is a kind of time-bomb that demands an urgency of vision, a challenge to exhaust the meaning from the image before the clock runs out. Unlike a paper photo that fades slowly over the years, the temporary photo disappears suddenly. Given only a peek, you look hard.
