How to make music out of the Mueller report redactions
Then, we went a little further. We sometimes sonify data to help listeners hear data on the radio. Using Python, you can convert a CSV file of data into a MIDI file. Once you have the MIDI file, you can use software such as Logic or Garage Band to make music.

A decade of the Datablog: 'There's a human story behind every data point' | Membership | The Guardian
Mona I ask myself whether the numbers I’m looking at will start a new conversation that people aren’t having yet, or if they will add to an existing conversation in a valuable way. If the answer to both of those questions is no, then I don’t bother to write the piece.

Nick In Australia we’ve taken on uniquely Australian topics such as disputes over the Hottest 100 (a yearly music poll on the public broadcaster’s youth station) and why a fluffy Maltese terrier named Bella is the quintessential canine of the nation. We’ve also covered more serious topics, including offshore detention and deaths in custody.

These days there are fewer blogposts with charts, and a bit more of the larger, more polished interactive graphics. This is partly due to experience, but also due to resources. When Guardian Australia started, it was a very small operation with only a handful of reporters. Now we’re a bit bigger, which has allowed us to tackle more ambitious projects.

Data Journalism Beyond Legacy Media: The case of African and European Civic Technology Organizations: Digital Journalism: Vol 0, No 0
Research has paid relatively little attention to two aspects that are increasingly important in understanding data journalism as a maturing field: (a) journalism today is increasingly provided by a diverse set of actors both inside and outside of legacy media organizations, and (b) data journalism has become a global phenomenon that cannot be fully grasped within national contexts only. Our article brings both of these aspects together and investigates the roles and practices of peripheral actors in European and African contexts. We engage with research on the role of non-profits and civic technologists in journalism to interrogate further the entanglements between civic technology organizations and data journalism. Following in-depth interviews with 29 practitioners of data-driven non-profits in Europe and Africa, we conclude that practices and roles of these non-profits in relation to journalism are similar, but transcultural and contextual influences shape how they complement or expand data journalism.

Journal (in Spanish): Ibero-American Data Journalism: development, contestation and social change bit.ly/2mGmdVM
As the emphasis of data journalism research shifts to the Global South, one region that remains relatively under-researched is Iberian America (Latin America, Spain and Portugal). Arguably a space that has pioneered data journalism practices and that has enormous potential for social change and development through open data, Iberian America has excelled in many areas related to the field. La Nación in Argentina, for instance, has to date one of the most innovative data journalism units globally. Also, La Nación, and the Spanish newspaper El País, were, together with the Guardian, the New York Times and the Spiegel, the first news organisation to extract and publish information from WikiLeaks' War Logs. In addition, Spain is one of the most open societies in Europe, and a global example for open data use.

Force Report
The Force Report, a 16-month investigation by NJ Advance Media, found New Jersey's system for tracking police force is broken, with no statewide collection or analysis of data, little oversight by state officials and no standard practices among local departments. Two decades ago, officials envisioned a centralized database that would flag potentially dangerous cops for scrutiny. But that database was never created. So we built it.

The simple tool we use to decide what stories to work on at NZZ Visuals
The Ampel changes the mode of ordering to requesting. This is important because not too long ago, anyone could just order graphics whenever they thought fit. It still takes time for everyone in the newsroom to accept that our team makes its own decisions on what stories we work on. Transparent and comprehensible decisions help.
We have become better at estimating the visual potential of a story and the resources needed — and at arguing our case. We can and must still get a lot better at both of these.

How ProPublica Became Big Tech’s Scariest Watchdog – Fast Company – Medium
“The one thing that’s been so interesting about the algorithms project that I would never have guessed is that we’ve ended up having to build algorithms all the time,” says Angwin, who has been writing about data and surveillance for more than a decade. It’s a resource-intensive, deeply challenging task in a media landscape where few are willing to invest in large projects, but Angwin views her team’s reporting as essential to holding big tech companies accountable and providing lawmakers with concrete evidence of wrongdoing. “We’re going to get police hats for our New Year’s presents,” she jokes.

Here is the probability you will break up with your partner — Quartzy
Methodological note: The Quartz break up calculator ™ is based on data from the How Couples Meet and Stay Together survey, which, starting in 2009, interviewed US couples about their relationships, then brought them back at about one, two, and five years after that to interview them again. (If a member of a couple died, they were excluded from the dataset.) Not all the follow-up interviews took place at exactly one, two, or three years after the first, so those numbers are approximations, and the one-year, two-year, and five-year breakup probabilities were derived from a simple statistical model. 1

(Big) Data Journalism with Spark and R | Timo Grossenbacher
So basically, the problem boiled down to preprocessing, filtering and searching through a very, very large data set. Some journalists prefer to cooperate with external experts when it comes to such problems. This is understandable, as many lack the time and knowledge to do it on their own. However, I think that tackling such problems wholly inside newsrooms has one tremendous benefit: You completely control what is done with the data, and you know exactly what can be interpreted into it – and what not.

How We Analyzed the COMPAS Recidivism Algorithm — ProPublica
We looked at more than 10,000 criminal defendants in Broward County, Florida, and compared their predicted recidivism rates with the rate that actually occurred over a two-year period. When most defendants are booked in jail, they respond to a COMPAS questionnaire. BuzzFeed’s pro tennis investigation displays ethical dilemmas of data journalism - Columbia Journalism Review
But they didn’t publish the names of suspicious players, including in the anonymized data or the code releases that accompanied the article. In the article, BuzzFeed states that the statistical evidence presented is not definitive proof of match fixing. That didn’t stop others from quickly de-anonymizing the players pinpointed by the statistical analysis. A group of undergraduate students from Stanford University were able to infer and make public the names of players BuzzFeed had kept hidden.

'I'm 34 And I Have A Good Job - Why Am I Still Stuck In A Houseshare?' | Grazia
Today, millions (yes, millions) of people are caught up in the rental trap, paying so much to private landlords each month - rent, on average, consumes 41% of their income – that they are unable to start saving for a deposit for their own home. Some are even putting off starting families. According to the most recent English Housing Survey, a fifth of the UK’s population now lives in privately rented accommodation. Renters are getting older too, with the number of 35-to-54-year-olds renting doubling in the last decade. But it’s not only renting that’s on the rise; the numbers of those sharing are soaring, too, because it’s cheaper than living alone. According to Spareroom.co.uk, a site that connects potential housemates, the number of people living in shared accommodation has risen by 400% in a decade. And that figure jumps to more than 600% for those between 45 and 54.
