Kill Your To Do List — CJ Chilvers
But first, we must admit the truth. The calendar doesn’t lie. It’s brutal about how much time you actually have in a day to complete your projects. It’s honest. Truth. Nice to see mine and Garrick van Buren’s Power of When get a mention too.

"Tsundoku," the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves, Should Enter the English Language | Open Culture
The word dates back to the very beginning of modern Japan, the Meiji era (1868-1912) and has its origins in a pun. Tsundoku, which literally means reading pile, is written in Japanese as 積ん読. Tsunde oku means to let something pile up and is written 積んでおく. Some wag around the turn of the century swapped out that oku (おく) in tsunde oku for doku (読) – meaning to read. Then since tsunde doku is hard to say, the word got mushed together to form tsundoku.

Possible futures | Derek Sivers
I made a folder on my computer called “Possible Futures”. For each big plan, I make a new file in that folder, and put all of my ideas and research into it. Now I can daydream all I want, not feeling bad that I’m not taking immediate action on this idea, because now it’s clear that it’s just one of many possible futures. Neat idea. May have to implement a similar thing.

Ipsum — Sam Ghobril
onethingwell: Ipsum is a journaling app [for iOS] dialed down to what’s essential. It features a chat-like interface, where all a user has to do is type down what they want to add to their journal and press send, just as they would in Messages or WhatsApp. The user interface is wonderfully simple and faff-free, but–since there doesn’t seem to be a way to back up, export or sync text written in the app–it’s probably best to think of Ipsum as an ephemeral notebook for disposable jottings, rather than a journal or diary. App Store This is totally the sort of thing I would have linked to on Minimal Mac back in the day. An interesting and simple approach to a journaling app.

'Hamilton' Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda: The Rolling Stone Interview | Rolling Stone
“The same fights we have over the role of our government now and the size of our government now are the fights they were having. Add the brutality of slavery to that mix as an undercurrent in all of those decisions. So I guess the biggest takeaway is, yes, this election cycle is bizarre. But it’s no more bizarre than the election in 1800, wherein Jefferson accused Adams of being a hermaphrodite and Adams responded by [spreading rumors] that Jefferson died, so Adams would be the only viable candidate. He was counting on news to travel slow! That, weirdly, gives me hope.” There is so much insight about the repetition of history on this entire interview. Read the whole thing.

“Genius hesitates” — Medium
Genius hesitates. I love that! When we approach a truly enormous idea, of the sort that tilts the world on its axis, we’re not excited and arrogant and confident. We’re unsure; we hesitate. I’ve noticed this in the scientists I interview. The ones who are doing really groundbreaking work are tentative, cautious, almost unsettled by the implications of what they’re saying. True genius is imbued with a large portion of humility. It takes deep intelligence to engage the idea that nothing is certain or permanent..

The Birth of a Nation
When I endeavored to make this film, I did so with the specific intent of exploring America through the context of identity. So much of the racial injustices we endure today in America are symptomatic of a greater sickness - one we have been systematically conditioned to ignore. From sanitized truths about our forefathers to mis-education regarding this country's dark days of slavery, we have refused to honestly confront the many afflictions of our past. This disease of denial has served as a massive stumbling block on our way to healing from those wounds. Addressing Griffith's Birth of a Nation is one of the many steps necessary in treating this disease. Griffith's film relied heavily on racist propaganda to evoke fear and desperation as a tool to solidify white supremacy as the lifeblood of American sustenance. Not only did this film motivate the massive resurgence of the terror group the Ku Klux Klan and the carnage exacted against people of African descent, it served as the foundation of the film industry we know today.

Why I don’t want stuff | Derek Sivers
I live in a little pre-furnished apartment with no stuff, and I love it this way. I have no books, knicknacks, decorations, and really no personal items at all. Just some minimal clothing, my laptop, headphones, and not much else. All the kitchenware and furniture just came with the place, and will stay here when I leave. Live the way that works best for you and communicate the reasons why to others. That’s the basis for living an intentional life.

Our Penny Universities — Daniel Nesbit
During the Enlightenment, the greatest minds were tweeting. Instead of utilizing the medium of the internet their network for spreading ideas were “penny universities.” For just a penny — the price of a cup of coffee — diverse groups of people gathered in English coffeehouses to discuss news and debate the latest ideas in philosophy, science, and politics. The takeaways from these gatherings in the coffeehouses — dubbed “penny universities” — spread to others in the network through individuals called “runners.” All of us today rest on the shoulders of those who sat in these penny universities, pushing the frontiers of ideas. Wow. I had no idea about the fascinating history of the English coffeehouse until I read this though provoking post.

Writing Wednesdays: Who R U?
The politician and the general serve the future in one way, the mother serves it in another. You and I as artists serve it too. For the past few days, once again, I’ve been haunted by a story I’ve been trying to write for about 20 years now. One I have in my head but can’t get down quite right. I take a stab at it every few months and then, not satisfied by the results, walk away only to be haunted again. A disturbance in my soul drawing me back to the page to try again from another direction. Deep down, I know it is a story that only I am meant to write. I know I’ll keep trying all my life, and any life that may come after, to get it right. The post linked above speaks to this idea and hit me in a very deep way.

#OptOutside with REI this Black Friday
REI believes that being outside makes our lives better. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside. What we believe in. With this move, they have pretty much guaranteed I’ll do as much of my holiday shopping at REI as possible. I’m proud to be a member/owner. It’s a great business move as well. How many more like me who will now go out of their way to shop more this holiday season and beyond? How much more in sales will they make over the next year versus only one day? My bet is that it will be significant.

Prince serenades Madonna at late-night Paisley Park gig | Local Current Blog | The Current from Minnesota Public Radio
As if to show off the band’s newly discovered chemistry, Prince followed up a rip-roaring rendition of “Guitar” with a lengthy, solo-filled jam to the Bill Withers song “Use Me Up.” After giving Grantis and his new bassist a turn at soloing, Prince slowed the song down and morphed it into a spacey, dreamy interlude, then tore through an impressive and complex piano solo that sounded like it was inspired in equal measure by Thelonious Monk and Jimi Hendrix. Just another night in the Twin Cities.

Seth's Blog: The patina of books and the magic thrill of a new idea
Every bookshelf tells a story. You can’t build one in a day or even a week… it’s a lifetime of collected changes. On the shelf over there I see an Isaac Asimov collection I bought when I was 12, right next to a yet-to-be-published galley by a friend of mine. Each of them changed my life. If I visit someone’s home for the first time, and there is a bookshelf, I always make a point to peruse it. You can tell a lot about a person based on what books are there.

Living Like Thoreau in a Cabin in Alaska - The Atlantic
The longer I sat there, the more I discovered that just the breeze could bring me into the right here and now. I pressed the warm mug against my collarbone, and stared at the mountains, which were grey-blue in the distance. The wind whipped and bent. The aspen and birch leaves, now more yellow than green, shimmied and shook. After I looked long enough, I began to connect sound with space. I could see which mosquito circled where, which gust hit which leaves, which branches creaked with which breeze. Soon, I could see it, right there in my front-yard: the world alive with so much dance. Beautifully written. As I prepare to spend my upcoming birthday alone in a cabin in the woods, I find such things even more fascinating.

Finally, a good, safe, story. - Album on Imgur
Where to start… we moved into our fixer-upper home two years ago and we’re finally getting around to the kitchen renovation. Eddie is DIY (enough) and saving us some money. It’s cute. During the demolition, we found this safe in the floor – the safe revealed itself when we tore down the kitchen island. To my knowledge, our home has had 6 previous owners – A hunch the safe didn’t belong to the last owners who seemed to like cats and smoking. Now this is cool.

Books have been, and will continue to be for some time, a physical maker of one’s curiosity and intelligence. Want to look worldly and cultured? Store your stash of tomes in style. A proper bookshelf is a great way to add a shot of sophistication to your place. Especially in the pockets of space in between the stacks of books. But how do you make your bookcase look as sharp as one expertly styled by an interior designer? Simple. Borrow moves from their professional playbooks to nail that perfectly relaxed but still polished vibe. Some lovely ideas here. Going to plan to add some of this to my own library.
