YouTube May Add to the Burdens of Humble Wikipedia - The New York Times
Wikipedia’s lopsided relationships can also amplify pre-existing internal problems. Its contributors skew white and male, for example, leading to predictable outcomes — just 17 percent of the subjects of biographies on the site are women. Wikipedia is taking steps to address the issue, but the next generation of consumer tech is being built on top of it — and its gaps and biases — in the meantime.

Something is wrong on the internet – James Bridle – Medium
Someone or something or some combination of people and things is using YouTube to systematically frighten, traumatise, and abuse children, automatically and at scale, and it forces me to question my own beliefs about the internet, at every level.

Better filters won’t cure this: YouTube’s kids nightmare
For what Bridle is describing, he explains, is a disturbing new kind of “art”, mass-produced only because a huge ad-supported platform such as YouTube rewards its creation. The “such as” caveat is redundant here, since no other video platform has scale. It has to be YouTube. Just as no other social network (at least outside China or Russia) has the scale of Facebook, so for fake news and political ads, it has to be Facebook. This is as much a characteristic of the internet in 2017 as fake news or spam.

Court Issues Decision On Intermediary Liability In Viacom v. YouTube | Intellectual Property Watch
Sherwin Siy, deputy legal director for online civil liberties group Public Knowledge, issued the following statement:

“We are pleased with the Appeals Court ruling. The Court upheld the basic principles of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Crucially, the Court rejected Viacom’s attempt to create a new duty of those hosting content to monitor actively for infringement in order to qualify for the law’s safe-harbor provisions. The Court upheld the need for knowledge of specific instances of infringement in the DMCA, and that a general awareness of possible infringement is not sufficient.”

EFF Calls for Immediate Action to Defend Tunisian Activists Against Government Cyberattacks | Electronic Frontier Foundation
"Demonstrations and protests over unemployment and poor living conditions have been ongoing in Tunisia since the beginning of December, but last week the Tunisian government turned up the heat on bloggers, activists, and dissidents by launching a JavaScript injection attack that siphoned off the usernames and passwords of Tunsians logging in to Google, Yahoo, and Facebook. The Tunisian government has used these stolen credentials to log in to Tunisians’ email and Facebook accounts, presumably downloading their messages, emails, and social graphs for further analysis, and then deleting the accounts entirely."

European Public Policy Blog: A Big Win for the Internet

Global Voices in English » Russia: The First Case of YouTube Ban
"On July 16, 2010, Komsomolsk-on-Amur city court issued a decision [RUS] requested by the city prosecutor. The decision requires a local Internet provider “Rosnet” to block IP-addresses of five websites: lib.rus (the judge meant lib.rus.ec, a Russian Internet library), thelib.ru, www.zhurnal.ru, web.archive.org, and… youtube.com.

"The court believes those websites host extremist content (several online copies of “Mein Kampf” and a video “Russia for Russians” that accompanied a skinhead-related song uploaded by a user from Serbia [RUS]) while the provider was accused of “not blocking them.”"

Amicus brief of the "sideshow coalition" of young creators in the Viacom/Google case over Youtube and copyright. "We are creative individuals unaffiliated with a major corporation who post original content on YouTube. We call ourselves the ―Sideshow Coalition‖ because Viacom has called us a sideshow.2 Viacom apparently considers us marginal and irrelevant because we are not affiliated with major media corporations. We believe, however, that the public wants and values creative expression unmediated and unfiltered by major media corporations. Our work is not simply some distraction to be viewed on the way to the big show. In fact, our videos have collectively been viewed about three billion times – and we are only a few dozen out of millions of users who have posted original content on YouTube."
