The Men Taking Classes to Unlearn Toxic Masculinity
He argues that the concept of “toxic masculinity” has four main components: suppression of anything stereotypically feminine; suppression of emotions related to vulnerability, like fear, sadness, or helplessness; male domination over women and other men; and aggression.

The Most Interesting Curator on the Internet Knows Exactly What You Want to See - Motherboard
> No human is directly involved in deciding what gets posted on Archillect. Archillect herself is an artificial intelligence that curates her own content. Deploying a network of bots that crawl Tumblr, Flickr, 500px, and other image-heavy sites, Archillect hunts for keywords and metadata that she likes, and posts the most promising results.

Anthony Bourdain on Weinstein, John Besh, and meathead restaurant culture.
> And I’ve also been thinking very much about Kitchen Confidential. I would go to signings a few years after Kitchen Confidential came out, and people would come up to me, mostly guys, they’d high-five me over the table with one hand and slide me a packet of cocaine with the other. And it was like dude, have you not read the book? What the fuck is wrong with you?

Sure Guys, It Is Awesome That We Are Shitting On Kamala Harris | Wonkette
"See, it is 2017, so now is the perfect time to libel anyone on the left who isn’t actively involved in Being Bernie Sanders, because it is important to start smearing progressive Democrats as corrupt early, so it can catch on. For bonus points, accuse her of not supporting things she supports.

It worked really well last time, and nothing bad can come of it."

David Chang: "Almost Everything We've Done Has Been a Failure from the Get-go" - Eater
"The whole idea of ugly-delicious was, how do I make food that I'm comfortable making again? As I've gotten older, I've embraced all the things that I truly love eating. I'm not embarrassed about it anymore. Now I'm just like, I don't give a fuck."

Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich - The New Yorker
Steve Huffman, the thirty-three-year-old co-founder and C.E.O. of Reddit, which is valued at six hundred million dollars, was nearsighted until November, 2015, when he arranged to have laser eye surgery. He underwent the procedure not for the sake of convenience or appearance but, rather, for a reason he doesn’t usually talk much about: he hopes that it will improve his odds of surviving a disaster, whether natural or man-made. “If the world ends—and not even if the world ends, but if we have trouble—getting contacts or glasses is going to be a huge pain in the ass,” he told me recently. “Without them, I’m fucked.”

Don’t Dress Your Age - The New York Times
I have long savored the prospect of letting myself go. It’s just the most delicious concept: a balloon wafting into the ether, a raft flowing smoothly with the current. One day, I have imagined, I would find myself wandering along the street, hair askew, unkempt but cheerful, wearing a curious assortment of clothes — perhaps a vintage frock with dapper heels — that meet just my liking.

I might bump into an old acquaintance who would regard me with concern. “Oh,” I would exclaim, with an easy laugh, and, touching her arm, say: “I thought you might have known. I’ve let myself go!”

I would saunter off, dangerously liberated, feeling envious eyes on my back — having reached, finally, the age when you can reject rejection.

Can Straight People Be Queer? | VICE | United States
I ask him if he can see why members of the queer community might take umbrage with a straight man performing in drag. "People have gotten really angry with me for being 'a straight man' dancing in the gay arena," he replies. "Women also take issue for different reasons. I have this one friend of mine who sends me endless essays by Susan Sontag." But, he says, theater gives him license to become someone else and politics has little to do with it. "For me, Dianne is a character; the idea of gender is suspended. It just so happens that the character I create on stage is a woman."

When Everyone Can Be ‘Queer,’ Is Anyone? - The New York Times
Maybe we are relying on a single word, a single idea, a single identity, to do too much. After all, “queer” never belonged to us; it was foisted upon us, and we reconfigured it to make it ours. The future will bring new possibilities and ideas — and new terms for them. Scientists are still learning about the vast and complex components that interact to create human sexuality. An article in Nature from 2015 delved into the latest research on sex and gender among mice. Sex determination is thought to happen in the womb, but studies of mice suggest that sex can fluctuate between male and female throughout life. Someday, maybe we’ll recognize that queer is actually the norm, and the notion of static sexual identities will be seen as austere and reductive.

Dated Emcees
Chinaka Hodge came of age along with hip-hop—and its influence on her suitors became inextricable from their personal interactions. Form blends with content in Dated Emcees as she examines her love life through the lens of hip-hop's best known orators, characters, archetypes and songs, creating a new and inventive narrative about the music that shaped the craggy heart of a young woman poet, just as it also changed the global landscape of pop.

Taste and Price: When Values Shift | Sweet Maria's Coffee Library
Here it might be a resentful “corrective” response to the narcissism of the coffee purveyor, that what they say in that ubiquitous 3 term description on the coffee bag is too self-flattering, and that the narrative of direct trade is too self-congratulatory. You probably aren’t going to get that in McCafe marketing. But you will get something else I am sure. While these resentments of high versus low culture, urban versus rural, etc seem more relevant than ever in the election year, it’s a whole different banana really. And whether blind tasting can really be an impartial measure of all the heterogenous ways coffee companies evaluate themselves and their coffees is iffy at best.

Williams College’s Zachary R. Wood: 'Racism Is a Pathetic Excuse for Disinviting a Speaker from Campus'   - FIRE
"Some would argue that people like John Derbyshire contribute to an atmosphere in which minority viewpoints are disadvantaged before they’re even uttered or read. By this logic, until there is a level playing field, free speech can—and should—come second. From my experience, this argument is usually made by black students who feel that many white people actively resist putting racism at the center of political conversations. Many of these same students struggle to imagine change when they feel that their white peers refuse to deal substantively enough with racism. Thus, the imagination required for change seems inaccessible to them. This viewpoint, in fact, is at the very heart of what we’re seeing on college campuses around the country today."

When Did Porn Become Sex Ed? - The New York Times
Frustrated by such stories, I asked a high school senior how she would feel if guys expected girls to, say, fetch a glass of water from the kitchen whenever they were together yet never (or only grudgingly) offered to do so in return? She burst out laughing. “Well, I guess when you put it that way,” she said.

Real Talk With RuPaul -- Vulture
Drag has always been about playing with language and taking it apart and blurring boundaries, whereas currently the discourse on the internet is about creating demarcations within language and saying you can, or cannot, say something. What do you think about that?

"It's stupid. They're dumb, and it's stupid. If I said, "Boy, I really love corn dogs!" it doesn't mean I actually love a corn dog. Because love has nothing to do with corn dogs. But it's just language. It's a state of mind. You take for granted that my intention is really to express that I enjoy them a lot and I want to eat one right now. That's what it's meant to do. But if you have an agenda and you want to take my sentence apart, you could certainly say, "Oh, my God! You love a corn dog? What do you mean by that? Do you want to marry it? Do you want to put it inside of you?" It's like, "That's not what I meant and you actually know that's not what I meant and you're only using it because you have an agenda so that you could get attention for whatever reason you have." "

On CNN, Debating Trump and the Ku Klux Klan. Really. - The New York Times
“Again: This is 2016. And here was a white panelist suggesting that his African-American peer should really go back and learn his history before criticizing someone about the Klan. Mr. Jones, calmly but with clear emotion, dressed Mr. Lord down: “We’re not going to play that game,” he said. “When you talk about the Klan, ‘Oh, I don’t know, I don’t know’ — that’s wrong.”

It was five minutes or so of the most stunning TV of the year.”

Why Straight Men Have Sex With Each Other -- Science of Us
“... I think it would be helpful to just start with greater awareness that homosexual desire is just part of the human condition.

Now if we take that as given, then the question is, Well, why do some people want it more than others, or why do some people organize their life around it, and other people don’t want anyone to even know that they do it? To me that’s a more interesting question than Are you born gay or straight? and so I think that the solution, honestly, is to stop being so obsessed with sociobiological arguments about sexual orientation, which I think are a trap, frankly, and instead ask the question, Given that so many humans have homosexual encounters, what is it that makes some people understand their homosexual encounters as culturally significant, and other people understand it as meaningless or circumstantial? I don’t think we have the answer to that question yet.”

Meta is Murder - Writing by Mills Baker
"it became “uncool” at some point to moralize; sanctimony was a “bad look”; musicians and directors and cultural figures of all kinds resisted sounding like preachers and op-ed columnists, resisted talking about moral categories, resisted shaming others and bragging about their positions; it seemed shallow to do so. There were exceptions, but by and large art was felt to be more important than politics, and truer as well."
