Awesome Universe of Creative Coding, Explained in Five Minutes [Video]
“What’s creative coding?”

At last, we have a five-minute video that, in rapid-cut wonder, explains the answer to lay people – and can be a serious dose of inspirational adrenaline to people doing it. (If designers and artists had locker rooms, watching this before tackling that next Processing tutorial might be in order.) Cover the big three of open-source, free-software toolkits for artists – Processing, OpenFrameworks, and Cinder – and showing everything you can do with them (from big-screen video walls to generative fashion), the video has nearly all the bases covered.

In fact, the only thing missing is you: as Dan Shiffman points out, it’s the contributions from the community that make these things work, and the incalculable number of students and artists learning now who will be the stars of this video in short order.

Lisa Romagnoli, Associate Producer of PBS’ Off Book, sends in the video to CDM.

(Those of you who aren’t from the USA, PBS is public broadcasting in the United States. Unlike most public media in the world, it receives only a sliver of its funding from the state; in a unique arrangement long before the age of Kickstarter, it has been funded largely by viewers, which gives it a uniquely-independent focus that I find inspiring as a Web publisher. It’s a non-profit, non-governmental network collectively owned by stations.)

Lisa describes the segment:

Programming plays a huge role in the world that surrounds us, and though its uses are often purely functional, there is a growing community of artists who use the language of code as their medium. Their work includes everything from computer generated art to elaborate interactive installations, all with the goal of expanding our sense of what is possible with digital tools. To simplify the coding process, several platforms and libraries have been assembled to allow coders to cut through the nitty-gritty of programming and focus on the creative aspects of the project. These platforms all share a strong open source philosophy that encourages growth and experimentation, creating a rich community of artists that share their strategies and work with unprecedented openness.

As for the series, “Off Book is a web series from PBS that explores cutting edge art, the artists that make it and the people that share it online.”

Side note: we need more people using Cinder, so it doesn’t auto-complete to Cinderella. (Why grow up to be a bland princess or Prince Charming when you can grow up to be a coding queen or emperor of data? And yes, you can still go to the ball – you’ll just use generative tech to produce both the visuals and your outfit.)

Now, send this to your family, friends, and anyone else who doesn’t know what the heck it is we mean when we say creative coding.

Real-life Portal adventure
Jason Craft is very good at special effects. As proof, I offer this homebrew Portal video, in which Craft and friends animate an excellent (and rather comical) Portal adventure. I was amazed to discover that the gun itself is also animated.

My interpretation of what a real POrtal gun would be like if one existed. Based on the video game, POrtal. I tried to match the game as close as possible. This was the most challenging project I have ever undertaken, consisting of 3D tracking, seamless camera cuts and 3D camera projection. This started out as an experiment since I didn't think I could even pull it off, if I knew it would've turned out as good as it did I would've put more of a story behind it. O well, it makes up for in Visual Effects, ENJOY!

Breakdowns are coming.

For those of you that think the gun is a physical prop you can buy, well.....sorry to break the news to you, but it's entirely CG. The 3D Portal gun was replacing/covering up a painted up coffee can with tracking markers.

POrtal: Terminal Velocity

The Victorian Kitchen Garden & a metric butt-ton of historical reconstruction series
The Victorian Kitchen Garden is a 13-part TV series that aired in 1987 on BBC2. It follows the month-by-month restoration of the Victorian walled kitchen garden at the Chilton Foliat estate in Wiltshire, England. Almost all the episodes are available to watch online. (via hark, a vagrant) It had three sequels - The Victorian Kitchen, The Victorian Flower Garden, and The Wartime Kitchen and Garden - and inspired more recent historical reconstruction programs: Tales From the Green Valley, A Tudor Feast at Christmas, Victorian Farm, Victorian Farm Christmas, Victorian Pharmacy, and Edwardian Farm. (Victorian Farm and Edwardian Farm previously.) Beekman 1802 has collected what episodes of Victorian Kitchen Garden that are available online into one webpage. Out of 13 episodes, the first 10 are complete online; the last 3 have only the first part available for each.

Of the sequels, Victorian Kitchen is available in full; Victorian Flower Garden has the first 6 of its 8 episodes available; but unfortunately, of Wartime Kitchen and Garden's 8 episodes, only the first two and the last one are available.

CUBE Dieter Rams
A little over a year ago three German students tested the design viability of a shiny black cube. They asked established designers and design critics to assess the cube. Above is the video with design legend Dieter Rams.

I agree with Steve Heller, you’ll never look at a cube the same way again (or will you?).

RSS5000
RSS5000 is a new RSS feed reader for iPad that made me look. I think this could be it, the first RSS reader I will stick with! Why? I don’t like not to see content in its original environment and RSS5000 seems to solve that problem. RSS5000 connects to your Google Reader account and allows you to swipe through your feeds as a stack of whole web pages. It feels sort of like flipping through your favorite websites on magic internet paper.

Nintendo DS "Sings" Daft Punk With a Little Help From Korg DS-10 [Nintendo DS]
The Internet is pretty ripe with cool Korg DS-10 videos, but this is the first one I've seen where the "game" got the venerable DS humming a tune alongside the duo from Daft Punk.
Sorry if that makes me sheltered or whatnot, but impressed I am, nevertheless.
Credit is due to Denkitribe, who used the musically inclined gray matter in his noggin to tweak the analog sound waveforms available in DS-10 to sound like words from Daft Punk's Harder Better Faster Stronger. Is it perfect? No. But it's a stellar effort I watched all the way through, so there.
Not bad for a $20 cartridge, and in any event it sounds better than an autotuned Kanye West. [technabob]
