Activision OK's XBLIG; you probably haven't heard of it, it's pretty underground [Update]
After accruing millions of fans and billions of dollars through mainstream blockbusters such as the Call of Duty franchise, Activision is going indie. Dark Reign: Redux is a modern, fan-made remake of the 1997 title, Dark Reign: The Future of War, which was developed by Auran and published by Activision. The revamp is available on XBLIG and was developed by Magnetar (no, that's not a Pokemon) Games to include updated resolution, widescreen, and PC, console and mobile capability.Dark Reign: Redux is $5 (400 MS Points) on XBLIG now, and buying it supports the indie and mega-huge gaming industry in one blow.Update: Activision isn't the direct publisher of Dark Reign: Redux, but it did OK the title in a licensing agreement with Magnetar Games, who self-published it.Activision OK's XBLIG; you probably haven't heard of it, it's pretty underground [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Jan 2012 21:00:00 EST. Architecture in The Witness is more than a pretty placeholder
Developer Jonathan Blow's coming title, The Witness, blends a new brand of storytelling with what he hopes is immersive gameplay, founded largely on the environments that Blow and two teams of architects designed. In his most recent blog post, Blow describes the intense detail hidden within each building and feature in The Witness:

"The game is constructed so that the more you pay attention to tiny details during your travels, the more insight you will have to the central story, even though it may not be obvious at any given time what a particular detail has to do with that story," Blow writes.

This all leads to a much deeper, philosophical understanding of the game, and we assume life, love and religion as well -- not that Blow said that last bit, but these things do tend to happen with his games.Architecture in The Witness is more than a pretty placeholder originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 25 Dec 2011 15:30:00 EST. The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Sherbet Thieves
Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, Eric Vogl and Dave Bastien discuss the importance of defending the galaxy against hostile aliens. And protecting sherbet. Mostly the sherbet part.

What's your game called and what's it about?

Eric: The game is called Sherbet Thieves and it's a twin-stick sherbet-defense simulator.

Dave: It's a strange combination of two of the greatest classic Williams arcade games: Robotron and Defender, but with co-op play, jetpack mercenaries, sherbet and space hippies. The whole game revolves around trying to prevent aliens from dragging sherbet to their UFO. To that end you shoot them with a variety of weapons and can reposition the sherbet with gravity bombs.Continue reading The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Sherbet Thieves

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record showing off Sandbox Mode at PAX
As if all the weird stuff we already knew about in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record wasn't enough, Capcom has even more to reveal at PAX this weekend. The company is showing off the game's Sandbox mode, which will let players run around Fortune City and cause as much mayhem as wanted "without having to worry about the clock."

The mode also offers a series of challenges in each of the game's environments (ranging from simple collection to killing zombies or driving around in vehicles) that will offer up cash as a reward. We've got a couple of Joystiq folks on the show floor at PAX, so stay tuned for a hands-on report about the mode itself.Continue reading Dead Rising 2: Off the Record showing off Sandbox Mode at PAX

Maybe A Laugh Track and Tower Defense Are Just What Gears of War 3 Needed [E3 2011]
Gears of War's developers certainly didn't invent "Horde Mode." But Epic Games, creator of Gears, is lucky in that every other game developer who copies their popular multiplayer mode gives the studio credit for it when showing off their own take on Horde. More »

Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2011
Normally, after E3, some clear "best games" emerge -- either the ones that everyone knew would be amazing going in, and did not disappoint on the floor, or the Scribblenauts-style surprises that dominated conversations online and in the press room. There's usually a general consensus among the Joystiq staff about a few standout games.

This year, however, when we compared notes and discussed our favorite games of the show over chicken and waffles, we found that every Joystiqer picked something different (there was more agreement when we asked the Massively staff to join in, but it makes sense for MMO fans to be in accord). We can't really say what that means, but it seems significant.

And so, rather than debate our way down to a few choices, we're just presenting each of our favorite games, individually. You want Joystiq's "Game of the Show"? It's ... all of these. We'd also like to call out Bloodrayne: Betrayal and Mass Effect 3, which came so close.Continue reading Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2011

Enslaved preview: The apocalypse goes green
To be as forthright as possible, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was not on my radar when it was announced last year. Apart from a handful of pretty screens, it subsequently managed to slip by me in the madness of the 2010 summer trade show season. Having now spent several hours with the first half of the game, it's impossible to think I could have missed it. Based on what I've played so far, Enslaved deserves a spot on everyone's radar, offering polished gameplay, interesting characters and a gorgeous world to explore.
