Most of What You Read on the Internet is Written by Insane People : slatestarcodex
If you read reviews on Amazon, you're mostly reading reviews written by people like Grady Harp. If you read Wikipedia, you're mostly reading articles written by people like Justin Knapp. If you watch Twitch streamers, you're mostly watching people like Tyler Blevins. And if you read YouTube comments, you're mostly reading comments written by people like Justin Young. If you consume any content on the Internet, you're mostly consuming content created by people who for some reason spend most of their time and energy creating content on the Internet. And those people clearly differ from the general population in important ways.

Childhood's End |
There is now more code than ever, but it is increasingly difficult to find anyone who has their hands on the wheel. Individual agency is on the wane. Most of us, most of the time, are following instructions delivered to us by computers rather than the other way around. The digital revolution has come full circle and the next revolution, an analog revolution, has begun. None dare speak its name.

"To snatch the passing moment and examine it for signs of eternity is the noblest of occupations," he wrote. "Therefore I undertook to be the monitor of the Washington seasons when the government was not looking. Though it was only for my own good, that is how the poorest of us may benefit the world. A more ambitious man might seek to improve the president of the United States."

Love, Happiness, and Time
The difference between things and events is that things persist in time; events have a limited duration. A stone is a prototypical “thing”: we can ask ourselves where it will be tomorrow. Conversely, a kiss is an “event.” It makes no sense to ask where the kiss will be tomorrow. The world is made up of networks of kisses, not of stones.

Winner Takes it All: How Markets Favor the Few at the Expense of the Many

Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s Favorite Literature Books – Nuggets of Thought
… Fiction is a certain packaging of the truth, or higher truths. Indeed I find that there is more truth in Proust, albeit it is officially fictional, than in the babbling analyses of the New York Times that give us the illusions of understanding what’s going on. Newspapers have officially the right facts, but their interpretations are imaginary – and their choice of facts are arbitrary. They lie with right facts; a novelist says the truth with wrong facts.

Segal's law - Wikipedia
"A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches can never be sure."

The argument against this is hilarious - under the subheader "In Reality":
In reality a man possessing one watch has no idea whether it is the correct time unless he is able to compare it to a known standard, in which case he effectively has more than one watch. This situation is not made any worse by having two watches. One might even think that it is better since if the two watches are in approximate agreement one might assume that both are working and an average of them will yield the correct time to within some accuracy depending on the specification of the timepieces.

Why is history always about humans? - The Boston Globe
had a thought similar to the headline earlier today - although not about the life history of a circus elephant per se.

while going through contact sheets I recalled the moment some loud hikers/walkers scared off a blue jay i was photographing on a trail in Prospect Park - which is fine, that happens all the time.

but it got me thinking about this heightened awareness of space, the living things around you - and how much they're ignored by people. parks and natural areas act more as these scenic backdrops for people to discuss their latest trivalities.

The walk or the hike becomes just a vessel to get mundane thoughts out to a friend, not something worthwhile in it's own makes me think, how often are we *actually* part of the world that we *actually* live in?

I continue to read dozens and dozens of scientific papers on different bird species, and I continue to be drawn to the 'natural history' type vs. the quantitative analysis type. Both types are great - but the thing I'm actually thinking about is - why are these papers secluded in a niche corner of biology, and not out in the greater open of history and culture?

there's parallels here that I'd like to articulate further in a larger text field.
