Kierkegaard On Escaping the Cult of Busyness » IAI TV
''The most ludicrous of all ludicrous things, it seems to me, is to be busy in the world, to be a man who is brisk at his meals and brisk at his work[…]What, after all, do these busy bustlers achieve? Are they not just like that woman who, in a flurry because the house was on fire, rescued the fire tongs? What more, after all, do they salvage from life’s huge conflagration?''

Winner Takes it All: How Markets Favor the Few at the Expense of the Many
Markets tend to favor unequal distributions of market share and profits, with a few leaders emerging in any industry.Winner-take-all markets are hard to disrupt and suppress the entry of new players by locking in market share for leading players.
Withg limited time or opportunity to experiment, we intentionally narrow our choices to those at the top.

In Adam Fisher’s “Valley of Genius,” an oral history of Silicon Valley, an early employee named Ezra Callahan muses, “ ‘How much was the direction of the internet influenced by the perspective of nineteen-, twenty-, twenty-one-year-old well-off white boys?’ That’s a real question that sociologists will be studying forever.”

Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s Favorite Literature Books – Nuggets of Thought
… Fiction is a certain packaging of the truth, or higher truths. Indeed I find that there is more truth in Proust, albeit it is officially fictional, than in the babbling analyses of the New York Times that give us the illusions of understanding what’s going on. Newspapers have officially the right facts, but their interpretations are imaginary – and their choice of facts are arbitrary. They lie with right facts; a novelist says the truth with wrong facts.

Segal's law - Wikipedia
"A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches can never be sure."

The argument against this is hilarious - under the subheader "In Reality":
In reality a man possessing one watch has no idea whether it is the correct time unless he is able to compare it to a known standard, in which case he effectively has more than one watch. This situation is not made any worse by having two watches. One might even think that it is better since if the two watches are in approximate agreement one might assume that both are working and an average of them will yield the correct time to within some accuracy depending on the specification of the timepieces.

Why is history always about humans? - The Boston Globe
had a thought similar to the headline earlier today - although not about the life history of a circus elephant per se.

while going through contact sheets I recalled the moment some loud hikers/walkers scared off a blue jay i was photographing on a trail in Prospect Park - which is fine, that happens all the time.

but it got me thinking about this heightened awareness of space, the living things around you - and how much they're ignored by people. parks and natural areas act more as these scenic backdrops for people to discuss their latest trivalities.

The walk or the hike becomes just a vessel to get mundane thoughts out to a friend, not something worthwhile in it's own makes me think, how often are we *actually* part of the world that we *actually* live in?

I continue to read dozens and dozens of scientific papers on different bird species, and I continue to be drawn to the 'natural history' type vs. the quantitative analysis type. Both types are great - but the thing I'm actually thinking about is - why are these papers secluded in a niche corner of biology, and not out in the greater open of history and culture?

there's parallels here that I'd like to articulate further in a larger text field.

Why Decentralization Matters – Chris Dixon – Medium
When they hit the top of the S-curve, their relationships with network participants change from positive-sum to zero-sum. The easiest way to continue growing lies in extracting data from users and competing with complements over audiences and profits.

Figure 1. "Platform's relationship to users". The s-curve shows that once growth hits a plateau over time once growth, a platform turns to extracting value from it's users to continue growth.

Nor did I realize he was an anarchist.

How heavy use of social media is linked to mental illness - Daily chart
Nearly 63% of Instagram users report being miserable, a higher share than for any other social network. They spend an average of nearly an hour per day on the app. The 37% who are happy spend on average just over half as long.

This isn't the first time this study has been done, showing more or less the same results. As much as I enjoy agreeing with the findings, I realized a flaw in the methodology - teenagers are probably miserable with or without social media.

Jonathan Franzen Is Fine With All of It - The New York Times
Has anyone considered that the interaction is the fragility? Has anyone considered that letting other people define how you fill your day and what they fill your head with — a passive, postmodern stream of other people’s thoughts — is the fragility?

The 'interaction' here refers to social media. And a nice thought on birds follows after. I think I got halfway through his sequel to The Corrections, whose title escapes me, before I stopped giving a shit. But, these couple paragraphs I can agree with.
