Datatilsynet: Tracking in Public Spaces – The use of WiFi, Bluetooth, beacons and intelligent video analytics.
In recent years, Norwegian companies and businesses have developed an increased interest in tracking our physical movements. Some companies use tracking technologies to calculate traffic delays during rush hour traffic or to estimate the waiting time at airport security. Others want to map and analyse their customers’ movements through shops and shopping centres in detail. Overall, the companies utilising tracking technologies are very different and pursue a wide range of objectives.

Enable unicode support in IRB (Example)
Recently I tried to paste some unicode characters into my irb session, but was greeted with the following:

irb(main):001:0> utf8_str = "r\U+FFC3\U+FFA9sum\U+FFC3\U+FFA9"
That's not what I expected! After some intrepid googling, this article by Henrik Nyh says the default OS X libedit library that Ruby is compiled against doesn't have good unicode support.

Att arbeta med 1950-talets matematikmaskiner
The witness seminar “Att arbeta med 1950-talets matematikmaskiner” [Working with the Computing Machines of the 1950s] was held at Tekniska museet [The National Museum of Science and Technology] in Stockholm on 12 September 2005, and led by Lars Arosenius. At the seminar the development of the first Swedish electronic computer BESK, at the Swedish Board for Computing Machinery (MMN), and the design of the subsequent BESK copies SMIL, at MMN, and Facit EDB, at AB Åtvidabergs Industrier/Facit AB, were discussed. Different design problems were observed, particularly the problem of developing working memories. The problem of the service reliability of the first computers was brought up. Furthermore the seminar discussed the early use of computers, paying special attention to the role of the largest users, the defense and meteorology areas. Problems such as hardware dependence of programming, memory capacity as a limiting factor and the use of subroutines were brought up. Other subjects touched upon included the peripheral equipment, the importance of the visits to study in the USA, the environment around BESK, the organizational problems at MMN, and the recruiting of the BESK group by AB Åtvidabergs Industrier.

Game developer’s guide to graphical projections (with video game examples), Part 1: Introduction
"This article series explains one of the fundamentals of drawing: how to draw three-dimensional things correctly. It’s an essential skill for artists, but it’s also a great first topic for coders that want to get started with art. Even better, we’ll learn it all by simply looking at video games (scroll to ‘Types of graphical projections’ if you’re antsy)."

Evolving Floor Plans is an experimental research project exploring speculative, optimized floor plan layouts. The rooms and expected flow of people are given to a genetic algorithm which attempts to optimize the layout to minimize walking time, the use of hallways, etc. The creative goal is to approach floor plan design solely from the perspective of optimization and without regard for convention, constructability, etc. The research goal is to see how a combination of explicit, implicit and emergent methods allow floor plans of high complexity to evolve. The floorplan is 'grown' from its genetic encoding using indirect methods such as graph contraction and emergent ones such as growing hallways using an ant-colony inspired algorithm.

WOZ Disk Image Reference Created by John K. Morris
"Why yet another Apple II disk image format?
This is probably the question many of you reading this document are asking. It basically comes down to the simple fact that none of the currently existing formats accurately represent the way data is encoded on an Apple II floppy disk. There is a place for a format that is an accurate representation of a bitstream that is also the exact length of a track so that it can be looped correctly. And since we are creating a format, it is also a great time to ensure that we organize the data in the image file in a way that allows for easy unpacking with as little memory and processing overhead as possible - this provides more performant usage in hardware and software emulators."

Adversaries, Distributed Ledgers & Decentralization · Field Notes
A number of alternative structures for distributed ledgers have been proposed in recent years. All of these solutions offer better decentralization, faster and more numerous transactions serving a larger number of nodes.

Arduino - DFUProgramming8U2
The ATmega16U2 chip on your Arduino board acts as a bridge between the computer's USB port and the main processor's serial port. Previous versions of the Uno and Mega2560 had an Atmega8U2. It runs software called firmware (so named because you couldn't change it once it had been programmed in the chip) that can be updated through a special USB protocol called DFU (Device Firmware Update).

"Stylish" browser extension steals all your internet history | Robert Heaton
Before it became a covert surveillance tool disguised as an outstanding browser extension, Stylish really was an outstanding browser extension. It bestowed upon its users nothing less than the power to change the appearance of the internet. Its extensive bank of user-made skins gave bright websites a dark background, undid disliked UI changes, and added manga pictures to everything that wasn’t a manga picture already. I spent many wonderful hours in its simple CSS editor, hiding the distracting parts of the web whilst unknowingly being spied on. Facebook news feed - gone. Twitter news feed - gone. Personal browsing history - gone. Quality of life and unexplained ennui - up and down respectively.

Reading a Dymo USB scale using Python | Steven T Snyder
For an experimental project I’m working on, I wanted to read the weight from a  DYMO M10 digital postal scale with USB support. I expected the scale to show up as a virtual COM port, since older digital scales used RS232 for their computer interface, but the scale shows up as a USB HID (Human Interface Device) in Windows.
