Development, Democracy, and the Village Telephone
"I was born in 1942 and raised in a poor village in one of the poorest areas of rural India, a place with kerosene lamps and no running water. In 1980, at 38, I was a U.S. citizen and a self-made telecommunications millionaire. By 1990, I was 47 years old and nearing the end of nearly a decade back in India as leader of a controversial but largely successful effort to build an Indian information industry and begin the immense task of extending digital telecommunications to every corner of my native country, even to villages like the one where I was born."

Virtual Keyboard Developer Leaked 31 Million of Client Recor
The Kromtech Security Center has discovered a massive amount of customer files leaked online and publically available. Researchers were able to access the data and details of 31,293,959 users. The misconfigured MongoDB database appears to belong to Ai.Type a Tel Aviv-based startup that designs and develops a personalized keyboard for mobile phones and tablets for both Android and iOS devices.
Ai.Type was founded in 2010 and According to their site, their flagship product for Android was downloaded about 40 million times from the Google Play store and the numbers of downloads and user bases are rapidly growing. They plan to integrate Matching Bots as a user types their conversation and that their Ai type keyboard will soon offer a “Bots Discovery Platform” Via Keyboard. There was also a notice of a name change from Ai.Type to Bots Matching Mobile Keyboard in the coming year.

Compressing Labels of Dynamic XML Data using Base-9 Scheme and Fibonacci Encoding
The flexibility and self-describing nature of XML has made it the most common markup language used for data representation over the Web. XML data is naturally modelled as a tree, where the structural tree information can be encoded into labels via XML labelling scheme in order to permit answers to queries without the need to access original XML files. As the transmission of XML data over the Internet has become vibrant, it has also become necessary to have an XML labelling scheme that supports dynamic XML data. For a large-scale and frequently updated XML document, existing dynamic XML labelling schemes still suffer from high growth rates in terms of their label size, which can result in overflow problems and/or ambiguous data/query retrievals.

Ethernet over telephone wire | Hackaday
When [Bobo1on1] upgraded his Internet connection from ADSL to Fiber he ran into an issue of actually getting that speed to his desktop computer though his LAN setup. Before he had been using a telephone extension wire which ran from where the DSL entered the house, through a splitter, to his computer where the modem was located. Now that the router used by the fiber system is located at teh entry point, he has no easy way to run Ethernet cable to his computer room. Wifi is predictably slower than the 50mbit WAN connection, and he was unable to use the telephone cable as Ethernet directly.

First-Hand:Inventing the Vidifont: the first electronics graphics machine used in television production - ETHW
In 1966, Rudi Bass, Director of Graphics Arts for CBS News, was tackling a set of challenges in preparation for the 1968 elections. Among other tasks, the Graphics Arts Department was required to generate graphics, including title graphics, for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. In order to comprehend the magnitude of the task they faced, it is helpful to understand how television graphics were created in those times.

I Love Typography » Blog Archive Socialist TV Typeface Videtur Finally Freed — I Love Typography
"In the 1980s, the German Democratic Republic’s state television broadcasting service commissioned Axel Bertram to develop a custom typeface. The result was “Videtur,” a remarkably independent serif design that was intended to define the on-screen graphics of East German television for years to come. But by the beginning of the 1990s, the GDR no longer existed. With it went its state broadcasting service – and Videtur, too. Another 20 years in the now reunified Germany would have to pass by before Andreas Frohloff could finally help bring a modernized FF Videtur to market."

Confessions of a Necromancer - Hintjens.com
Thirty-five years I've written code, a necromancer weaving spells to bring the dead to life. Hardware and electronics never held any charm for me. I've no love for chips and cables and solder. Give me a keyboard, a screen, and a language, and you have my attention. Thirty-five years produced a lot of work. So I thought, maybe time to talk about some of those projects.

The Hershey Fonts with Frank Griesshammer on Vimeo
In the 1960s, at Dahlgren Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dr. Allen V. Hershey worked on what was to become some of the earliest digital fonts. Hershey’s work is impressive for both technical and creative aspects, and was documented in a report called “CALLIGRAPHY FOR COMPUTERS”. Discovering this paper inspired Frank Grießhammer to resurrect Hershey’s work and bring the fonts to the age of OpenType.
Frank will talk about the history and environment of Hershey’s creation, and touch on the current state of resurrection. He has talked on the topic at TypeCon 2015 before, and while some parts will overlap, the presentation will not be identical.

Frank Grießhammer has been working as a type designer and font developer with Adobe since 2011.
Before coming to California, he graduated from the Type and Media masters program at the Royal Academy of The Hague in 2010, worked for FSI FontShop International in Berlin, and studied graphic design at Saarbrücken, Germany, and Florence, Italy.

BearSSL - Constant-Time Crypto
In 1996, Paul Kocher published a novel attack on RSA, specifically on RSA implementations, that extracted information on the private key by simply measuring the time taken by the private key operation on various inputs. It took a few years for people to accept the idea that such attacks were practical and could be enacted remotely on, for instance, an SSL server; see this article from Boneh and Brumley in 2003, who conclude that:

Bit Twiddling Hacks
When totaling the number of operations for algorithms here, any C operator is counted as one operation. Intermediate assignments, which need not be written to RAM, are not counted. Of course, this operation counting approach only serves as an approximation of the actual number of machine instructions and CPU time. All operations are assumed to take the same amount of time, which is not true in reality, but CPUs have been heading increasingly in this direction over time. There are many nuances that determine how fast a system will run a given sample of code, such as cache sizes, memory bandwidths, instruction sets, etc. In the end, benchmarking is the best way to determine whether one method is really faster than another, so consider the techniques below as possibilities to test on your target architecture.

CRC RevEng: arbitrary-precision CRC calculator and algorithm finder
CRC RevEng is a portable, arbitrary-precision CRC calculator and algorithm finder. It calculates CRCs using any of the 102 preset algorithms, or a user-specified algorithm to any width. It calculates reversed CRCs to give the bit pattern that produces a desired forward CRC. CRC RevEng also reverse-engineers any CRC algorithm from sufficient correctly formatted message-CRC pairs and optional known parameters. It comprises powerful input interpretation options. Compliant with Ross Williams' Rocksoft™ model of parametrised CRC algorithms.

Stop Using word2vec | Stitch Fix Technology – Multithreaded
When I started playing with word2vec four years ago I needed (and luckily had) tons of supercomputer time. But because of advances in our understanding of word2vec, computing word vectors now takes fifteen minutes on a single run-of-the-mill computer with standard numerical libraries1. Word vectors are awesome but you don’t need a neural network – and definitely don’t need deep learning – to find them2. So if you’re using word vectors and aren’t gunning for state of the art or a paper publication then stop using word2vec.
