How to Cite Datasets and Link to Publications | Digital Curation Centre
"This guide will help you create links between your academic publications and the underlying datasets, so that anyone viewing the publication will be able to locate the dataset and vice versa. It provides a working knowledge of the issues and challenges involved, and of how current approaches seek to address them. This guide should interest researchers and principal investigators working on data-led research, as well as the data repositories with which they work."

An app can be a home-cooked meal
I am the programming equivalent of a home cook.

The exhortation “learn to code!” has its foundations in market value. “Learn to code” is suggested as a way up, a way out. “Learn to code” offers economic leverage, a squirt of power. “Learn to code” goes on your resume.

But let’s substitute a different phrase: “learn to cook.” People don’t only learn to cook so they can become chefs. Some do! But far more people learn to cook so they can eat better, or more affordably, or in a specific way. Or because they want to carry on a tradition. Sometimes they learn just because they’re bored! Or even because—get this—they love spending time with the person who’s teaching them.

The list of reasons to “learn to cook” overflows, and only a handful have anything to do with the marketplace. This feels natural; anyone who has ever, like… eaten a meal… of any kind… recognizes that cooking is marbled deeply into domesticity and comfort, nerdiness and curiosity, health and love.

Well, it’s the 21st century now, and I suspect that many of the people you love are waiting inside the pocket computer you are never long without, so I will gently suggest that coding might be marbled the same way.

Bash Brackets Quick Reference | assert_not magic?
Bash has lots of different kinds of brackets. Like, many much lots. It adds meaning to doubling up different brackets, and a dollar sign in front means something even more different. And, the brackets are used differently than many other languages. I constantly find myself doing a 5-second search for which one is the right one to do since I’m not writing Bash scripts all the time. So here, I’m going to lay them all out and then print this article out and staple it to the wall by my desk. Possibly with a decorative frame. So here we go.

A tiny note on all of these is that Bash generally likes to see a space between round or square brackets and whatever’s inside. It doesn’t like space where curly braces are concerned. We’ll go through in order of net total squigglyness (NTS score).

Wuhan Coronavirus: What Does R0 Mean? - The Atlantic
"R0 is the _average_ number of people who will catch the disease from a single infected person, in a population that’s never seen the disease before.

R0 is important because if it’s greater than 1, the infection will probably keep spreading, and if it’s less than 1, the outbreak will likely peter out.

R0 estimates for the new coronavirus are in line with those for many other diseases. They’re similar to those for SARS (2 to 5) and HIV (also 2 to 5), and considerably lower than those for measles (12 to 16).

A bigger R0 doesn’t necessarily mean a worse disease. Seasonal flu has an R0 that hovers around 1.3, and yet it infects millions of people every year. SARS had an R0 of 2 to 5 and infected just over 8,000 people.

The number is a measure of potential transmissibility. It does not actually tell you how fast a disease will spread.

R0 is not destiny. It is a measure of a disease’s potential. And once nations realize that a new disease exists, they can actively screen for it, check that health-care workers are using proper protection, and instigate quarantines. Even simple steps such as hand-washing might make a difference. All these measures could potentially lower the chances that the virus will spread and ensure that its actual transmission rate—the quantity known simply as R—is less than R0, and ideally less than 1."

Why procrastination is about managing emotions, not time - BBC Worklife
"“When someone finally recognises that procrastination isn’t a time management problem but is instead an emotion regulation problem, then they are ready to embrace my favourite tip,” says Pychyl.

The next time you’re tempted to procrastinate, “make your focus as simple as ‘What’s the next action – a simple next step – I would take on this task if I were to get started on it now?’”. Doing this, he says, takes your mind off your feelings and onto easily achievable action. “Our research and lived experience show very clearly that once we get started, we’re typically able to keep going. Getting started is everything."

Your guide to surviving downtown during the revolution anniversary crackdown | | Mada Masr
Life in central Cairo under Sisi:

"In the lead-up to each anniversary of the January 25th revolution, the authorities launch widespread security campaigns in downtown Cairo and its surrounding areas. These include apartment raids, arbitrary arrests, and the stopping and searching of cars, motorbikes and pedestrians throughout December, January and early February. Heavily armed police and armored security vehicles are currently stationed throughout the area. During this period, downtown becomes dangerous for its own residents, and many people choose to stay away from the area."

The EVALI and Youth Vaping Epidemics — Implications for Public Health | NEJM
"As of January 7, 2020, a total of 2602 cases of EVALI had been reported to the CDC from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; 57 deaths had been confirmed. All patients with EVALI have reported using vaping products. Nationally, most of these patients reported using THC-containing products, but some reported exclusive use of nicotine-containing products. The median age of patients was 24 years; 62% of patients were between 18 and 34 years old, and 16% were under 18.

Most patients with EVALI reported having obtained their products from informal sources, such as friends, family, or in-person or online dealers. In addition, laboratory testing of bronchoalveolar-lavage (BAL) fluid samples from 51 patients with EVALI revealed THC in most samples and vitamin E acetate in all samples, but did not identify these substances in BAL fluid samples from a control group. Vitamin E acetate can be used as a thickening agent in THC-containing vaping products, but the evidence is insufficient to rule out the contribution of other chemicals to the development of EVALI"

Behind the gorgeous new illustrated edition of Ursula K Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness - The Verge
"The look of the Genenthians in the story came from an attempt to visualize how a race of people who existed in a freezing, snowy environment might evolve to look like. Ursula had always had in her mind that these people would therefore resemble Inuit or Native American people... She described Genly Ai on the other hand as taller, dark-skinned, with an ethnicity that in the distant future would evoke a slight sense of racial mixing. I simply attempted to fulfill Ursula’s wishes and interpret her vision of the characters the best way I could."

Baked Spanakopita Pasta With Greens and Feta Recipe
Ingredients

Kosher salt and black pepper

4 cups chopped spinach, Swiss chard or other mild greens (tough stems removed)

4 cups chopped arugula, watercress or other peppery greens

1 cup chopped fresh dill or parsley leaves and tender stems, or a combination

6 scallions, trimmed and thinly sliced, whites and dark green parts separated

1 pound tubular or curvy pasta, like rigatoni or fusilli

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced

8 ounces cream cheese (1 cup), cut into 1/2-inch cubes

4 ounces mozzarella, grated (1 cup)

4 ounces crumbled feta (1 cup)

Preparation

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Heat the oven to 450 degrees.

In a 3-quart/9-by-13-inch baking dish, toss the chopped spinach, arugula, herbs and scallion greens with 2 teaspoons salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Squeeze the mixture with your hands to wilt, then set aside.

Cook the pasta in the boiling water until 2 minutes shy of al dente; reserve 1 cup pasta water, then drain pasta and set aside. Return the pot to the stove.

Melt the butter in the pot over medium heat. Add the scallion whites, garlic and a pinch of salt, and sauté until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the cream cheese and pasta water and stir until smooth. Stir in the wilted greens, half the mozzarella and half the feta until combined. Stir in the pasta until combined. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Transfer the pasta to the baking dish, then top with remaining mozzarella and feta. Bake until the sauce has thickened and bubbly and the top has browned in spots, 10 to 15 minutes. If you like a crisper top, broil for a few minutes.
