25 years of EdTech – 1998: Wikis
Martin Weller reminds us that wikis didn’t take off in education - but not without effort from a lot of us. Effort that went on from 2003 here: http://erhetoric.org/WeblogsAndWikis . Why would wiki fail? Wikis are easy to work on, but wiki-writing is hard. It doesn’t have to be hard, but the dominant rhetoric pushes against the provisional, speculative, slowly-evolving-over-time, communal work that wikis support.

Authoring, Audience, Authority: Lessons from Student Contributions to the DRC Wiki
Interesting to see that urbane students have the same issues with wikis and DH concepts as the more parochial students I work with. But why o why ask students to follow wikipedia guidelines of NPOV? Why recreate wikipedia? Write wiki entries from local interests for local interests.

Intertwingled Work - Greg Lloyd
An excellent post on intertwingledness in contexts. If pages/content are findable and addressable, they can be intertwingled - and it a matter of creating contexts that allow us to draw from that complexity to make meaning. Greg gives an apology for inline links, but, really, we don't need to apologize for that anymore. Let 'em eat cake.

It's the culture, stupid! How Atlassian maintains an open information culture
Pretty good article about wikis in Atlassian, a wiki-value-added company. The emphasis is on local practices of sharing ("culture" is the code word), and how those practices are made open on local wikis and blogs. Good for outlining some of the possible practices corporate wonks might be asked to engage. Some cheer leading, but worth a butchers.

Who Does What On Wikipedia? - Technology News - redOrbit
Ram and Liu identified seven specific roles that Wikipedia contributors play.

Starters, for example, create sentences but seldom engage in other actions. Content justifiers create sentences and justify them with resources and links. Copy editors contribute primarily though modifying existing sentences. Some users – the all-round contributors – perform many different functions.

"We then clustered the articles based on these roles and examined the collaboration patterns within each cluster to see what kind of quality resulted," Ram said. "We found that all-round contributors dominated the best-quality entries. In the entries with the lowest quality, starters and casual contributors dominated."

To generate the best-quality entries, she says, people in many different roles must collaborate. Ram and Liu suggest that the results of this study should spark the design of software tools that can help improve quality.

WikiResearch / Improving Academic Writing Skills
Thorough research with a diverse group of students. The reach the usual conclusions but wisely emphasize moderation of claims. Representative anecdotes. "Through collaboration and iteration, we were able to significantly increase and improve the effectiveness of our use of wikis in writing-intensive classes. We found that although the wikis were a compelling tool for teaching writing and although students improved their confidence in and ability to write, we could not attribute either of these effects directly to our use of wikis. Instead, wikis facilitated the methods of teaching writing we already practiced, such as multiple drafts, self and peer review, and writing for audiences other than the teacher. We found wikis most useful as a tool for student collaboration and were delighted by the community building effects of this collaboration.

From Knowledgable to Knowledge-able: Learning in New Media Environments | Academic Commons
Wesch. "As we increasingly move toward an environment of instant and infinite information, it becomes less important for students to know, memorize, or recall information, and more important for them to be able to find, sort, analyze, share, discuss, critique, and create information. They need to move from being simply knowledgeable to being knowledge-able."

While well worth reading and citing, there isn't much new in this article. It's solid anthropological principles and understanding applied to teaching and learning.
