Teaching McLuhan: Understanding Understanding Media | Enculturation
more than this, he's drawing line from McL to Carr and others. "In this essay I will explain how I interpret McLuhan’s Understanding Media to my students. This essay is more interpretative than pedagogical. If we understand what McLuhan is saying in this book and how he is saying it, we can make these ideas understandable to undergraduates. I impose some linearity and coherence on McLuhan by identifying the following four themes that run throughout Part I of the book: media as extensions of ourselves, hot and cold media, the reversal of the overheated medium, and antidotes to the narcotic effects of media. Then my students and I explore the application of these themes in Part II of Understanding Media as McLuhan discusses how his theories apply to specific medi

media archeology - a conversation -
The important stuff is always in the footnotes.

"Media archaeology is an approach to media studies that has emerged over the last two decades. It borrows from Michel Foucault, Walter Benjamin, and Friedrich Kittler, but also diverges from all of these theorists to form a unique set of tools and practices."

How open source is disrupting visual art
Like open source, writing on a wiki and creating new work in DH men's sharing from the start, and that sharing disrupts ego and the myth of original creation. "This "solitary genius" myth largely holds to present day, but it’s a fundamentally dangerous assumption that causes artists to be analyzed outside of their social context and one that is getting harder and harder to maintain in the age of the Internet. Open source dismantles this notion, demonstrating more than ever that artists never work in a vacuum."

The Times’ Paywall and Newsletter Economics « Clay Shirky
Even Murdoch can't change the commodity market. "online, the Times has stopped being a newspaper, in the sense of a generally available and omnibus account of the news of the day, broadly read in the community. Instead, it is becoming a newsletter, an outlet supported by, and speaking to, a specific and relatively coherent and compact audience."

Andreessen’s Advice To Old Media: “Burn The Boats”
is longstanding recommendation that they should shut down their print editions and embrace the Web wholeheartedly. “You gotta burn the boats,” he told me, “you gotta commit.” His point is that if traditional media companies don’t burn their own boats, somebody else will.

Let's Stop the Twitter Madness - The Daily Beast
Second of two recent columns dissing twitter as a waste of time. Again, no evidence, a lot of straw arguments, and invoking the usual scary tropes and commonplaces: we aren't reading Great Works, Losing the Craft of the Thank You Note ... Comments from readers show insight.

Twitter Jumped the Shark This Week - The Daily Beast
One of two recent columns on why twitter is a waste of time - the arguments really seem that thin and puritan. It's a diversion from Real Work and Real Contact. Lots of name calling. Lots of fallacies. Little evidence.
