Confidence for good - Bobulate
People, both women and men, should be so fiercely passionate about good ideas that self-promotion is a natural extension. Otherwise, why is it worth doing in the first place? It’s when confidence and self-promotion are obfuscated from passion that the claims become flimsy and empty. Confidence can bridge the gap between desire and outcome as long as the integrity for what we believe and the authenticity of what we create remain in place. We have the ability to both do good work and to recognize it — the choice is ours to make. Confidence is good’s natural extension.

A Rant About Women « Clay Shirky
Now I don’t know what to do about this problem. (The essence of a rant, in fact, is that the ranter has no idea how to fix the thing being ranted about.) What I do know is this: it would be good if more women see interesting opportunities that they might not be qualified for, opportunities which they might in fact fuck up if they try to take them on, and then try to take them on. It would be good if more women got in the habit of raising their hands and saying “I can do that. Sign me up. My work is awesome,” no matter how many people that behavior upsets.

inessential.com: 3 laws
The Three Laws of iPhone apps:

1. An app must not allocate memory or, through inaction, allow memory to be allocated.

2. An app must obey all didReceiveMemoryWarnings given to it by the system, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. An app must continue to run and not crash as long as such running does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Restaurants Use Menu Psychology to Entice Diners - NYTimes.com
The use of menu engineers and consultants is exploding in the casual dining arena and among national chains, a sector of the business that has been especially pinched by the economy. In response, they are tapping into a growing body of research into the science of menu pricing and writing, hoping the way to a diner’s heart is not only through the stomach, but through the unconscious.

Paresthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paresthesia (/ˌpærɨsˈθiːziə/ or pronounced /ˌpærɨsˈθiːʒə/, spelled paraesthesia in British English) (also Cacaesthesia) is a sensation of tingling, pricking, or numbness of a person's skin with no apparent long-term physical effect. It is more generally known as the feeling of "pins and needles" or of a limb "falling asleep" (although this is not directly related to the phenomenon of sleep). The manifestation of paresthesia may be transient or chronic.

Charge for it. Rather than plead with people to support something they love, force them to. Even if they lost 80% of their podcast listeners, the still huge amount of remaining listeners will continue to enjoy the show (without the begging) and This American Life becomes financially secure.

Basement.org: The iPad & The Side Streets
We should all take Apple's lead in caring about and building great experiences for users. Apple is not evil. They build great experiences. They built a beautiful place for people to go. What the world needs isn't less Apple but more Apples. More enriching experiences. More options. More beautiful places to go. The Web is capable of anything…including hosting beautiful places to go. Apple isn't scary. Having only one Apple is scary.

A few of my friends are the drink-at-every-opportunity, go-out-four-nights-a-week, spend-all-your-disposable-income-on-alcohol-and-related-activities type. I used to be the same but since taking up triathlon five months ago I’ve cut back to almost nothing. I still hang out with these friends and have a great time with them but when I, again, told a friend I wouldn’t be drinking tonight he said:

stevenf.com - I need to talk to you about computers. I’ve been...
The iPad as a particular device is not necessarily the future of computing. But as an ideology, I think it just might be. In hindsight, I think arguments over “why would I buy this if I already have a phone and a laptop?” are going to seem as silly as “why would I buy an iPod if it has less space than a Nomad?”

UI and Us — UI and Ux design - UI and us Blog - Almost Touching the Tablet
But what excites me most is a possible feature that no one seems to have thought of. It's not sexy, and it's something we use everyday on our desktop machines. In fact you probably can't remember computing without it. And yet, I feel it's the key to the future of computing, and without it, the Tablet will not be able to spawn the New Age of Computing. So what's this amazing technology? I'll tell you: mouseOver. You know, the feature whereby links on a page change when you mouse over them, buttons darken and tooltips appear. The subtle interaction that lets you learn more about an interface without committing to anything as serious as a mouse click.

Just-world phenomenon
The just-world phenomenon, also called the just-world theory, just-world fallacy, just-world effect, or just-world hypothesis, refers to the tendency for people to want to believe that the world is just so strongly that when they witness an otherwise inexplicable injustice they will rationalize it by searching for things that the victim might have done to deserve it. This deflects their anxiety, and lets them continue to believe the world is a just place, but often at the expense of blaming victims for things that were not, objectively, their fault.

Design Explorations by 37signals
One of the first projects for me as a new designer at 37signals is to take a fresh look at a series of features and screens in the company’s applications. These individual pieces are ones that we know can be better but haven’t made it onto anyone’s plate yet. Much like the Highrise Contacts exploration I did a couple of months ago, I’ll be looking at each piece intensively for a short period of time with the aim of improving and refining the experience. And also like the Highrise piece, I’ll be carefully documenting the process, including the directions that didn’t quite work. So stay tuned for more like this in the coming weeks.
