North Korea's economy contracted in 2017 — Quartz
North Korea’s economy is no longer booming July 20, 2018 at 03:02AM https://ift.tt/2O0Gstv

Sanctions are biting North Korea hard.

That’s according to South Korea’s central bank, which said today (July 20) that North Korea’s GDP contracted 3.5% in 2017, after growing by 3.9% the previous year. The Bank of Korea conducts research on North Korea’s economy as the secretive nation does not release economic data.

An official from the Bank of Korea said that North Korea suffered from a fall in mining exports and heavy-industry activity because of international sanctions leveled at the regime by the United Nations. The bank added that the effects of the sanctions would continue to be felt in 2018 despite the recent diplomatic thaws between North Korea and the international community.

Exports decreased 37.2% from a year ago, according to the central bank. In the fourth quarter of 2017, the IMF said, the value of exports from North Korea fell below $300 million, about a third of the amount in the same period a year earlier. The sharp drop can in large part be attributed to China’s increasing reluctance to buy resources like coal from its neighbor amid attempts to bring the rogue regime to the negotiating table and get it to suspend its nuclear weapons program. North Korean exports of coal, textiles, and seafood were banned under UN resolutions last year.

The United Nations sanctions not only ban trade with North Korea, but also stipulate that North Koreans working abroad, for example in construction or in restaurants, must return home by 2019. Russia, where tens of thousands of North Koreans work as laborers, said it would send all of them back by November next year.

Kim Jong Un has been eager to brand himself as an economic reformer who is concerned with the livelihood of North Korean citizens, even allowing the market to assume a greater role (paywall) in the country’s tightly controlled economy. Economic realities might give Kim pause should he continue on the trajectory of engaging with his neighbors, and of course the US.

Hyperloop is coming to Guizhou, one of China’s poorest provinces — Quartz
Hyperloop is coming to one of China’s poorest provinces July 20, 2018 at 01:23AM https://ift.tt/2LuHzjz

In China, one proverb tells the gist of how economic development happens in many poor and distant places: If you want to get rich, first build a road. The mountainous southwestern Guizhou province is a perfect example of that.

The Guizhou government yesterday (July 19) signed a deal with California-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies to build a track for a futuristic high-speed transportation system in Guizhou’s eastern city Tongren. Under the agreement, Hyperloop will establish a 50-50 joint venture with state-owned Tongren Transport, Tourism and Investment Group, according to state media People’s Daily.

Founded in 2013, Hyperloop aims to build a transportation system, also called a hyperloop, that uses magnets to levitate trains, purportedly making it possible to travel at speeds up to 1,223 km/h (760 mph). The arrival of a hyperloop project, where trains travel in an airless tube, in Guizhou shows how one of China’s poorest provinces is transforming into a tech hub. The province is now the data-storage home of Apple’s iCloud users in China, and will house the user data of social-media app WeChat.

Being part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative—a massive infrastructure project often dubbed the new Silk Road—has made Guizhou attractive for foreign investment. One of the initiative’s key components is building routes for high-speed trains. “We envision that Hyperloop will play into a bigger role in the Silk Road Economic Belt,” said Dirk Ahlborn, Hyperloop CEO in a statement.

Next stop: China. We are honored to sign an agreement to bring China’s first #hyperloop system to life. #HyperloopTTMovement #HyperloopTT pic.twitter.com/kILLx5ixUi

— HyperloopTT (@hyperlooptt) July 19, 2018

The hyperloop project in Tongren is expected to cost about 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) and will be divided into two phases. The first phase, which will cost about 2 billion yuan ($290 million), is a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) route that will connect Tongren’s airport to the city. The second part is a 50-kilometer (31-mile) route that connects the city to Mount Fanjing, a popular tourist destination in Guizhou, according to People’s Daily. A Hyperloop representative tells Quartz construction will begin early next year, but did not provide a timeframe for its completion.

China already runs the world’s longest high-speed rail line, and it’s also looking to develop its own supersonic transportation system that can travel over three times the speed of sound.

Reliance Jio effect: Phone calls in India are now nearly free — Quartz
Making a phone call in India is now nearly free July 20, 2018 at 12:40AM https://ift.tt/2LoSGO8

There’s never been a better time to say “Hello!” in India.

Rising competition and the popularity of internet-based calls have made voice calls nearly free in India.

Over the last two years, voice-call charges in India have fallen nearly 70%. In March this year, a minute of an outgoing call costs Rs0.16 ($0.002) as compared to Rs0.49 in March 2016, Manoj Sinha, minister of communications, said in a written reply (pdf) to the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of parliament.

“The call rates of both private mobile companies and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) telecom companies have dropped in the recent years,” Sinha said.

One reason for this decline is the launch of Reliance Jio in September 2016, which disrupted the industry. The firm, founded by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, offers data and calls at rock-bottom prices, forcing other industry players to follow suit.

“Jio is a huge factor for what is happening,” said Sanchit Vir Gogia, founder and CEO of research and advisory firm Greyhound Research. “Voice is a foot-in-the-door strategy. Telcos offer cheaper voice rates to rope in customers and then package as much data as they can to get people more entrenched into the ecosystem…it’s about how you can cross-sell and upsell.”

Also, with broadband quality improving in the country, calls over the internet have become popular, eating into telecom players’ revenue.

“At times, you can’t connect a normal call but you can do a FaceTime call,” said Gogia. “And with cheap Chinese handsets coming into the market, customers have a WhatsApp or a WeChat at their disposal all the time.”

India's supreme court resumes bitcoin and cryptocurrency hearing — Quartz
India’s cryptocurrency saga enters a crucial phase in the supreme court today July 19, 2018 at 11:44PM https://ift.tt/2Nv6xjr

All eyes in the Indian cryptocurrency ecosystem will be on the country’s top court starting today (July 20) as hearings in their case against the central bank’s harsh measures directed at them resume.

While the verdict itself may take a while to be pronounced, the proceedings will clear the government’s stance towards the industry and the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) reservations against bitcoin and its ilk.

In April, the RBI had directed banks to wind down all cryptocurrency-related accounts by the first week of July. Soon after, the bourses challenged this in the supreme court.

The RBI’s diktat has been primarily challenged by the firms on two grounds, said lawyers familiar with the case. These are article 19(1) (g) of the Indian constitution, which allows citizens to enjoy the right to carry on any occupation, trade, or business; and article 14, which prohibits discrimination and mandates equal protection under the law for all.

In earlier hearings, the court refused interim relief to these exchanges. Yet, the industry remains hopeful.

“Our expectation is that the hearing will be on the basis of merit where we get to present the case on why the RBI circular is unconstitutional and should be quashed,” said Rashmi Deshpande, associate partner at Khaitan & Co, a law firm representing Kali Digital Eco-Systems, an Indian exchange planning to begin operations later this year.

Cryptocurrency exchanges versus the RBI

The matter is being heard by chief justice Dipak Misra along with justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.

The attorney general of India (AGI), KK Venugopal, is also likely to be present for the hearing, following the court’s directive. “The union government is also a party in some of the cases, so that may be one of the reasons for calling the AGI,” a lawyer requesting anonymity had told Quartz earlier. “But it also clearly shows that the court thinks it’s a significant matter.”

The court had earlier ordered the bourses to engage with the RBI and they, over the last two months, have been urging the baking regulator to soften its stance. These exchanges have offered to open up for more scrutiny and regulation if the blanket ban is lifted.

However, earlier this month the central bank rejected their suggestions, citing investor protection, the anonymity of transactions, and the cryptocurrencies’ lack of intrinsic value.

Now, the government’s draft regulations for the sector is their last hope.

American companies pay more per data breach than companies in other countries - Business Insider
American companies paid significantly more on average for every data breach in 2018 than companies in any other country July 19, 2018 at 05:42PM https://ift.tt/2mwy5JS

As we've seen over the course of the last few years alone, companies in the US have have had a particularly difficult time dealing with the repercussion of data breaches.

In 2018, about 25% of data breaches were due to human error rather than criminal activity, according to IBM Security and Ponemon Institute, and apparently they all happened at a monetary rate disproportionate to the rest of the world.

It's not just that they're struggling to maintain their reputations. As this chart from Statista shows, American companies also paid significantly more on average for every data breach in 2018 than companies in any other country — a little over $3 million more than companies in runner-up Canada, and more than twice as everyone other than Canada, Germany, and France.

Microsoft made more than $100 billion in revenue for the first time — Quartz
For the first time, Microsoft brought in than $100 billion in the last year July 19, 2018 at 04:55PM https://ift.tt/2JDMPPY

Business is booming in Microsoft’s cloud.

The tech giant generated $9.6 billion in overall cloud revenue during its fiscal fourth-qua rter, it announced today (July 19), a 23% year-over-year increase. Its cloud-computing platform, Azure, a crown jewel of the company’s cloud portfolio in its fight again Amazon’s competing business, grew 89% over the same period last year.

The company reported overall revenue of $30.1 billion in its fourth quarter, and $110.4 billion for the year since July 2017, beating Wall Street’s expectations of $29.2 billion for the quarter. Microsoft’s revenue was up 17% over its last fiscal year, leading to its first $100 billion-dollar year.

Analysts are paying particularly close to the company’s commercial cloud services, which CEO Satya Nadella has touted at as the future of the company. Nadella’s cloud strategy means more recurring revenue and opportunities on platforms outside of its Windows operating system, a stark departure from the paths of past CEOs Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates.

Aside from the cloud, Microsoft has seen consistent growth in Dynamics 365, the company’s cloud business tools, as well as Xbox, LinkedIn and Office 365. The company’s “More Personal Computing” category, which consists of Xbox, Bing, Windows, and its hardware business, grew 17% in the last year, posting $10.8 in revenue.

Microsoft's Tom Burt says Russia tried to hack three 2018 US midterm candidates — Quartz
Microsoft says Russia tried to hack three 2018 US midterm candidates July 19, 2018 at 01:36PM https://ift.tt/2NwxseP

A Microsoft executive today swiftly contradicted Donald Trump’s claim that Russia is not trying to disrupt the 2018 midterms: The company has already worked with the US government to foil Russian hacking attempts on three candidates.

While refusing to disclose their names for privacy reasons, Tom Burt, Microsoft’s vice president for customer security, told the Aspen Security Forum that the three candidates “were all people who, because of their positions, might have been interesting targets from an espionage standpoint, as well as an election disruption standpoint.”

Burt said that the hackers targeted the candidates’ staffers with the kind of phishing tactics used to inveigle their way into the Democratic National Committee servers in 2016: They set up a fake Microsoft domain and attempting to direct staffers towards it. The government and Microsoft “were able to avoid anyone being infected by that particular attack,” he said.

When asked yesterday if he believed Russia was interfering in the US midterms, Trump said: “No.” This contradicted his own intelligence chief Dan Coats’s statement days earlier: “Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later claimed Trump had been misunderstood, insisting that he had meant “no” to further questions from reporters. “We believe that the threat still exists,” she said, according to the New York Times (paywall). “Which is why we are taking steps to prevent it.”

Burt said that so far Russian hackers have been less active than in 2016, during the presidential race. “The consensus of intelligence threat community right now is that we’re not seeing the same level of activity by the Russian activity groups,” he said. “We don’t see the activity of them trying to infiltrate think tanks and academia and in social networks to do the research they do to build the phishing attacks.”

He warned, however: “That doesn’t mean we’re not going to see it, there’s a lot of time left before the election.”

Headwinds and tailwinds: Jargon-loving execs say they face one more than the other — Quartz
Companies always seem to have the wind in their faces, not at their backs July 19, 2018 at 01:15PM https://ift.tt/2mthUwI

There’s an old Irish blessing: “May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back.” Corporate executives, it seems, have not been so blessed.

Transcripts of earnings calls, public financial filings, press releases, and presentations compiled by Sentieo show that companies say that they face “headwinds”—finance jargon for the external difficulties a business faces—far more often than “tailwinds,” which are factors that would helpfully push a company forward.

There all sorts of headwinds and tailwinds swirling around companies these days—regulations, exchange rates, politics, and the like—but it seems, for the most part, that companies believe outside forces are generally conspiring against them. (This also conveniently makes executives’ achievements seem all the more impressive.)

Even Apple, the world’s most valuable listed company, is not immune to the prevailing winds: In recent years, it’s had to deal with supplier headwinds, currency headwinds, and those pesky macroeconomic headwinds.

Mentions of both types of winds appear to be on the rise, suggesting that it’s getting windier out there. Maybe it’s global warming’s fault.

Turo’s peer-to-peer car marketplace showing no signs of slowing down | AWS Startups Blog
Turo’s peer-to-peer car marketplace showing no signs of slowing down July 19, 2018 at 12:24PM https://ift.tt/2O2qcbn

Founded in 2009, Turo arrived on the scene right at the beginning of what would be dubbed the “sharing economy”. The company’s premise seemed a bit out there at the time—having strangers share your car—but has since proven to be a lucrative business that attracts consumers and VCs alike.

According to Andre Haddad, CEO of Turo since 2011, there are almost 300 million cars in the United States and about 1.1 billion worldwide. While those numbers seem staggering, the average car is only used 5% of the time, per Haddad. Turo looks to fill that gap, offering a marketplace where car owners can share their cars with other users when available.

The company currently boasts more than 850 makes and models on its site, ranging from a Prius for $46 a day to an Aston Martin Vantage, yours for just under $800 per day. The emergence of the latter, premium-class, vehicle is something that took the Turo team by surprise initially. Who would want to have a stranger in their Aston Martin? What they learned was that Turo actually makes owning a premium-class vehicle a bit more practical than it used to be, since consumers can now offset some of the cost by sharing it.

Outside of making vehicles more affordable, Turo also enables car owners to share their passion with a wide array of people. Haddad is a great example of this. A fan of Teslas, he currently has three listed—a Model S, X, and the 3—and finds that many of the people booking his cars are really excited about a unique experience that can often be hard to track down (the Model 3, for example, is widely available to test drive).

So what’s next for Turo? The company has raised about $200 million in funding to date from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Trinity Ventures. Having closed a $104 million Series D round in April, it would seem the peer-to-peer car sharing startup has plenty of gas in the tank. Companies in its class are often included in public offering rumors, but for now, Turo looks to be happy expanding its mark on a now-established industry.

George R.R. Martin: "Fire & Blood" isn't the next Game of Thrones novel — Quartzy
George R.R. Martin warns fans that his 1,000-page Targaryen history will disappoint them July 19, 2018 at 12:11PM https://ift.tt/2Lkmsn9

In April, George R.R. Martin announced he would publish a new book by the end of 2018. True to form, it would not be his years-late next book in the Song of Ice and Fire narrative, upon which the HBO show Game of Thrones is based.

Martin announced then that Fire & Blood, a 989-page history of the Targaryen family in the style of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, would come out Nov. 20. The book, he said, would cover the Targaryen kings, from Aegon I to the III, and would include “lots” of dragons. He was also sure to emphasize that the book wouldn’t exactly be for casual, plot-loving readers or watchers of the show.

Martin wrote, “I do want to stress… indeed, I want to shout… that FIRE & BLOOD is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never intended to be. … Everyone clear on that?”

This week, Martin re-affirmed that this is not the book his fans really want. In an interview with Publishers Weekly, Martin said:

The important thing, as I keep stressing, is that it’s not a novel. I think it’s very entertaining—a lot of people will like it, I hope—but I don’t want them to buy it thinking that they’re getting the latest Ice and Fire novel, which is an entirely different literary form than what’s essentially a popular history.

Fans of the show may be long past caring about the existence of Martin’s books, as the plot overtook the novels in season six, which aired in 2016. But for purist fans of the book series, the delay on Winds of Winter has been agonizing, as Martin has continued to work on a seemingly endless list of projects that are not the sixth book.

Martin is not the first creator to warn fans in advance that they might not like what he’s about to produce. Indeed, fervent internet fandom is gaining unprecedented clout in Hollywood, and “fan service” does seem to guide plot lines and inside jokes on the HBO show. But Martin as an author seems to be suffering from a different problem: He has long promised he’ll finish Winds of Winter, and seems to genuinely care about feedback from his most loyal fans. But that’s still not enough to get him over the severe procrastination and rabbit-hole-burrowing that’s led him to this deep-cut historical non-novel.

Netflix just hired The Weinstein Company's former top awards strategist — Quartz
Netflix really wants more Oscars recognition July 19, 2018 at 10:32AM https://ift.tt/2O0ACs0

Fresh off its Emmy nomination sweep, Netflix may be preparing for a serious Oscars push.

The streaming-video giant just hired Hollywood’s top awards strategist, Lisa Taback, who earned her stripes working with famed awards-season hustlers, producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

Netflix poached Taback and colleagues from her consulting firm, LT-LA, the Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday (July 18). Taback has helped deliver seven Best Picture awards at the Oscars—Hollywood’s top honor—and many other accolades in her career. In her new post at Netflix, she’ll head up talent relations and report directly to chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

The hires come ahead of Oscars season in the US, when studios release the films they deem most worthy of critical acclaim, in the hopes of earning recognition from the illustrious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which runs the awards ceremony.

Taback worked in the publicity department at the Weinstein-run Miramax in the 1990s, where she was reportedly tasked with delivering Oscar nominations and wins at any cost. Harvey Weinstein was known for doing anything in his power, shy of breaking the rules, to win awards. She started her own consultancy in 1994, but continued to work with the Weinsteins and was a strategist for The Weinstein Company as well.

She cut ties with The Weinstein Comany a few years before Harvey fell from power and the company went bankrupt. She remained one of the leading awards-season strategists in the business. Taback reportedly campaigned for Lionsgate’s La La Land and A24’s Moonlight, both of which dominated the 2017 Oscars.

With Taback in its corner, Netflix could become a new awards-season powerhouse. It won its first feature-film Oscar for the documentary Icarus last year, and it proudly displays its Oscars, Emmys, and other accolades in the entryway of its West Hollywood offices. It opened offices in Los Angeles in 2017, and is eager for more recognition to attract top-tier talent. Netflix wants to cement itself as not only a place for zeitgeist-hitting TV, but top-quality movies and series that could go up against any Hollywood studio.
