Dunkin' Donuts is changing its name to attract younger consumers — Quartz
Dunkin’ Donuts thinks a name change will attract younger customers September 25, 2018 at 05:10PM https://ift.tt/2Q3bdhN

In a bid to attract younger consumers, the 68-year-old American pastry brand Dunkin’ Donuts will axe “donuts” from its logo, nomenclature, cups, and boxes. It will now be called “Dunkin’.”

The move, effective in January 2019, is the centerpiece of a new strategy to appeal to younger consumers by upgrading its image and technology, the company told NBC and Fortune. The overall rebrand will cost the company about $100 million, according to the Wall Street Journal (paywall).

The new name, the company believes, will draw attention to product offerings aside from pastries, such as its coffee. Caffeinated drinks in general and coffee in particular are huge right now. It’s why Coke bought the UK-based coffeehouse company Costa and Nestle bought Blue Bottle and entered into a deal to sell Starbucks drinks.

Dunkin’ will also simplify its menu from its currently-sprawling list of offerings, following another industry trend—McDonald’s, for instance, axed items off its dollar menu and breakfast menu a couple years ago to make ordering simpler. In addition, the pastry brand will add priority check-out lanes for customers who’ve ordered on the company’s mobile app in inat least 50 pilot locations in the US.

Top competitors such as McDonald’s and Starbucks have made similar moves to modernize their ordering technology. It’s a trend for many food chains serving up breakfast and fast-casual options. In the last three years, Chipotle added mobile ordering. So did Dominos Pizza, which found much success in the mobile upgrade.

“It’s time we take our relationship with our guests to the next level,” the company said in a statement. “We’re now moving to a first-name basis with America.”

Dunkin’ Donuts was founded in 1950 in Massachusetts, and now has more than 9,100 locations in the US, and more than 12,500 around the world. All of them will reflect the name change.

Mike Ovitz, a cofounder of Creative Artists Agency and former president of The Walt Disney Company, says there are many parallels between the movie and music industry of the 1970s and 1980s and Silicon Valley today. When it comes to managing creatives, he says you have to have patience and believe in the work. But to get that work made, you have to have shrewd negotiating skills. Ovitz says he now regrets some of the ways he approached business in his earlier years, and advises young entrepreneurs about what he’s learned along the way. He’s the author of the new memoir Who Is Mike Ovitz?

Images from Cassini show evidence of dust storms on Saturn's largest moon — Quartz
Images from Cassini show evidence of dust storms on Saturn’s largest moon September 25, 2018 at 04:35PM https://ift.tt/2xKEUwk

Until now, dust storms have only been observed on two celestial bodies: Earth and Mars. But after looking at images produced using data from NASA’s Cassini space probe, which crashed into Saturn in 2017 after 13 years of service, astronomers believe they’ve seen evidence of dust storms on Titan, the largest of Saturn’s more than 60 moons.

Originally thought to be a storm of methane clouds—Titan has flowing bodies of liquid methane that evaporate and rain back down periodically—the clouds observed were far too low in the atmosphere to be clouds. A story on the Jet Propulsion Lab’s website elaborates on how astronomer Sebastien Rodriguez and his team came to this conclusion:

Modeling showed that the features must be atmospheric but still close to the surface — most likely forming a very thin layer of tiny solid organic particles. Since they were located right over the dune fields around Titan’s equator, the only remaining explanation was that the spots were actually clouds of dust raised from the dunes.

The dust storm, pictured below in an array of satellite images, appears as pink blobs over the surface of Titan, which is rendered a blueish green in satellite imagery.

We won’t take politically expedient but economically unwise decisions- Bawumia - MyJoyOnline.com
We won’t take politically expedient but economically unwise decisions- Bawumia September 25, 2018 at 04:10PM https://ift.tt/2xBNK0s

The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has mounted a rugged defence for government’s management of the volatile cedi in a fragile economy.

According to him, the government is on the right path towards creating a viable economy and will not be coerced into making hasty decisions that will affect the economy.

His comments come at a time when many Ghanaians are reeling under a high-cost living triggered by a depreciating cedi and an escalating fuel prices.

The cedi is inching close to 5 cedis per dollar whilst the fuel is selling at 5.2 cedis per litre.

Many, especially members of the opposition NDC have berated government’s poor management of the economy while businessmen, women commercial drivers, market women all complain about the cost of doing business as well as rising cost of living.

There have been calls for the government to remove taxes on fuel products in order to reduce prices on petrol and hopefully reduce the standard of living.

Members of the Ghana Federation of Labour are even threatening to go on demonstration if the government does not act with dispatch.

Head of the Federation Abraham Koomson told Joy News his members will soon come out with the plan for the demonstration if the situation remains the same.

But the government is unfazed by the mounting pressure and criticism.

The president only recently admitted there was economic difficulties in the country but was quick to dismiss assertions it had hit crisis level.

His vice also admits the difficulties but blamed external shocks for it.

Speaking at a Policy Summit, Monday Dr Bawumia said the government is on the right track despite the difficulties.

“We will strive as a government to keep the cedi stable. The shocks notwithstanding, the fact still remains that our record of management of the cedis has been a relatively good one.

“We will continue to stick to fiscal discipline and market determination of exchange rate. We will not be forced by these external shocks to take politically expedient but economically unsustainable decisions.

“We know we are on the right track and we are going to stay the course and look at the long-term interest of Ghana and not the short-term political expediency,” he stated.

Blockchain could help Africa’s commodity markets, says Ideanomics CEO Bruno Wu — Quartz Africa
Blockchain could improve transparency in Africa’s commodity market September 25, 2018 at 03:31PM https://ift.tt/2NDcdfU

Corruption, mismanagement and opaque business practices have for decades defined Africa’s commodity markets.

A Chinese billionaire says deploying new technologies might be the solution that could help African nations trade their minerals and natural resources more efficiently and profitably. Bruno Wu, chairman and co-CEO of technology company Ideanomics (formerly Seven Stars Cloud Group), says blockchain and artificial intelligence could create efficient systems that would help in pricing, selling, and ensuring accountability. Digitizing asset production and distribution would also allow for an opportunity to leapfrog, he adds, allowing the continent to lead just as it has with mobile money worldwide.

“Having a better tomorrow for Africa is about having a more transparent future. And blockchain can help there,” Wu told entrepreneurs and investors at an event hosted today (Sept. 25) at Africa House collective in New York.

Ideanomics has leveraged blockchain and AI to disrupt businesses for the past few years. Wu said the company has invested in 60 AI and blockchain companies, mostly in Silicon Valley and China, through strategic partnerships or ownership stakes. This month, the US-based firm also announced a joint venture to digitize the Asia-Pacific Model Electronic Port Network—a move that removes layers of middlemen in the port supply chain.

Wu told Quartz the company is studying the African market and would be open to working with countries that are leaders in producing key commodities, such as Nigeria for oil or Kenya for tea.

The announcement comes as African governments soften their stance on the use of blockchain technologies. After dealing with the issue with a mix of reticence and strong-handedness, governments such as Kenya’s have set up task forces to study the benefits and challenges. The decentralized, distributed ledger technology is also being used to disrupt everything from agriculture in Kenya and savings in Zimbabwe to trade in Nigeria and land fraud in Ghana.

Adopting the technology’s foolproof nature could also help save African economies millions of dollars they lose in corruption and money laundering, especially in the lucrative oil and minerals sectors. “Africa has an advantage with this digital future. So let’s not waste it,” Wu noted.

Justin Trudeau says there's a logic behind Canadian tariffs on Heinz ketchup — Quartz
Justin Trudeau says there’s a specific logic behind Canadian tariffs on Heinz ketchup September 25, 2018 at 03:03PM https://ift.tt/2xKYaej

Canada stamped a 10% tariff on imported American ketchup in July, as part of its retaliation for new US tariffs on Canadian metal.

Prime minister Justin Trudeau, speaking in New York today (Sept. 25), explained that there was a specific logic behind targeting US ketchup.

“The thing with tariffs is they actually raise prices for consumers,” said Trudeau, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations during an event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

In order to protect Canadian consumers, the government chose products where consumers could opt for competitors made in Canada and not affected by the tariffs, theoretically thus avoiding an increase at the cash register. Ketchup fit the bill.

“We have ketchup made in Canada, called French’s ketchup, and it’s just great,” said Trudeau. “And so if you’re going to raise the price of Heinz’s ketchup, Canadians should have an alternative that’s not going to cost them more in their pocketbooks. But it does have an impact on the American company.”

Heinz is a particular target, because it put about 700 Canadian workers out of jobs in 2014 when it closed a plant in Ontario. French’s, which is mainly known for its mustard, began making ketchup in Canada after Heinz closed its plant.

French’s is actually an American company as well—it’s owned by McCormick & Co. of Baltimore. But it boasts that the ketchup sold in Canada is made there, with Canadian tomatoes.

UNGA: Trump's "principled realism" doctrine is an oxymoron — Quartz
Trump’s doctrine of “principled realism” baffles the foreign policy world September 25, 2018 at 02:06PM https://ift.tt/2xOHgdI

Donald Trump again used the UN stage to trumpet a policy of “principled realism,” whatever that may mean.

At first glance, the doctrine seems a contradiction in terms. In political science, realism is “essentially an approach to foreign policy that puts the nation’s interests above all other considerations—whether moral, human, or whatever,” says Paul Stares, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. “It’s all about national security and prosperity, and nothing else.”

So, once you add principles to a doctrine that places national interest above all principles, what do you actually believe in? The idea is “vacuous,” Stares tells Quartz.

“It has superficial appeal—you know, every American wants to be both principled and realistic but what does it actually mean in practice? Is it the idea that we should follow the principles of realism or be principled in a realistic way?” he asks. “In fact if you look at our policy in all kinds of places, we do one and contravene the other.”

He points to Iran and North Korea as two of many contradictory examples. With Iran, the US has played to principles but not its main interests by pulling out of a multilateral nuclear deal. That seems to have put the US in more danger, as it refuses to deal directly with a theocratic regime. By contrast, the US has try to rein in North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, but to do so, Trump helped legitimize its dictator Kim Jong Un when he became the first US president to meet with a North Korean leader.

The administration’s overall foreign policy has mainly looked like “ad hoc-ery” rather than an approach based on either principles or realism, says Richard Gowan of the United Nations University.

Trump betrayed such contradictions in his own speech. While emphasizing the importance of national sovereignty, he promised that “the United Sates will not tell you how to live or work or worship.” He then insisted that “all nations of the world should resist socialism,” and, after his speech, refused to rule out military intervention in Venezuela.

Bill Cosby is ruled a sexual violent predator — Quartz
Bill Cosby is officially the worst kind of sexual predator September 25, 2018 at 01:37PM https://ift.tt/2IdQ6q8

The actor once known as “America’s Dad” has officially been ruled to be a sexually violent predator in a Pennsylvania court—the highest-risk classification for sexual offenders in the state.

The classification means that Cosby must remain on the sex offenders’ registry for the rest of his life, undergoing regular counseling, register with state police, and notify any community he lives in of his sex offender status.

The ruling today (Sept., 25 ) comes ahead of the actor’s sentencing for drugging and molesting Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. While the defense has pushed for leniency and a sentence of no more than a couple of years, perhaps to be served under house arrest, the prosecution is seeking five to 10 years imprisonment, a $25,000 fine, and funds to pay for the costs of prosecution. Today’s designation may lean toward a stricter sentence.

The finding is part of the state-specific regulations of the federal law known as Megan’s Law, which requires authorities to inform the public about registered sexual offenders in their area. At a minimum, they must make registry information public. It’s up to each state to decide how it is done and to what extent information will be readily available. Cosby’s classification brings with it the most onerous sex-offender registration requirements that can be applied in Pennsylvania.

It suggests that Judge Steven T. O’Neill may believe, as a state-appointed psychologist told the court yesterday, that Cosby—accused by dozens of women of sexual misconduct is dangerous, and suffers from a mental disorder. “The behaviors are beyond [a sexually violent predator’s] controls,” psychologist Kristen Dudley said, “so they are urged to act on it. He is likely to reoffend.”

Scrabble tip: English words with a Q not followed by U - Business Insider
Your English teacher was wrong – there are tons of words that have a Q but no U September 25, 2018 at 01:19PM https://ift.tt/2OaO1Rr

The letter Q is almost always followed by a U in English, but that isn't always the case.

Scrabble players tend to struggle with words using a Q, but experienced players know they don't need a U to follow it.

There are a handful of words that English borrowed from other languages that flout that rule, like burqa, qat, and qabbalah.

Some things make perfect pairs.

Macaroni and cheese. Rocky and Bullwinkle. Hall and Oates.

The same can be said for two letters of the English alphabet: Q and U. Anyone who's taken a spelling class probably remembers their teacher telling them that in English, the Q must always be followed by a U.

Well, it turns out that's not exactly true. In reality, there are dozens of words in English that have a Q that isn't followed by a U. And no one knows this better than Scrabble players.

Many of those words are borrowed from other languages. Arabic and Hebrew are two especially common sources, as in English the Q is often used to represent the more guttural "K" sound that appears in those languages. We can thank those languages for giving us words like "burqa," a full-body garment worn by some Muslim women, and "sheqel," the currency of Israel.

But Q-without-U words come all from all over the globe, from Mandarin to Inuit to Zulu. A couple of them are even "homegrown" English words with a modern twist. They're all in the English dictionary, and therefore allowed in Scrabble.

Here's a sample of the English words in which the Q stands alone.

SEE ALSO: 'OK' was just added to the Scrabble dictionary, and experts are saying it could change how Scrabble is played

DON'T MISS: 8 common words you probably didn't know came from TV shows

Burqa

Language of origin: Arabic

A burqa is a long, loose garment that covers the face and body and is worn by some Muslim women.

Mbaqanga

Language of origin: Zulu

Mbaqanga is a style of music from South Africa that was popular in the 1960s. It combines elements of traditional music with jazz and big band.

Niqab

Language of origin: Arabic

A niqab is a veil worn by some Muslim women that covers the hair and the face except for the eyes.

Pictures: New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern brings her baby to the UNGA — Quartz
Photos: New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern brings her baby girl to the UNGA September 25, 2018 at 12:34PM https://ift.tt/2Ifubin

New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern, the world’s youngest female head of state, is now the first to bring her child to the UN General Assembly, as her 3-month-old daughter Neve Gayford attended the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.

In June, Ardern, 38, became the first world leader in decades to give birth in office. Images of baby Neve have been a rarity in New Zealand, as the prime minister’s office has been exceptionally protective of images of her young daughter. In August, the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Auckland was warned about taking unauthorized images of Neve.

Ardern has acknowledged that while the privacy of her child is important, her singular role as a head of state who also happens to be a new mother will attract attention. “I love that people have shared in this joy with us, and that’s been because I have a really public role and so I accept that means that our family life will be quite public…But at the same time, I’ve chosen a public life, Neve hasn’t,” she told the New Zealand website Newsroom.

Yesterday (Sept. 24), Clarke Gayford, Ardern’s parnter, sat with their daughter while she addressed the peace summit in New York.

Ardern and Gayford’s reticence to show off their newborn make the UN images all the most interesting. While they’ve avoided having Neve photographed in New Zealand, the couple made an exception for the largest of global stages.

How to Permanently Resolve Cross-Department Rivalries
How to Permanently Resolve Cross-Department Rivalries September 25, 2018 at 12:09PM https://ift.tt/2NI86ze

Adam Pretty /Getty Images

It can be challenging to synchronize complex tasks across multiple functions. Rather than cooperating, too many functions end up competing for power, influence, and limited resources. And such rivalry is more than a nuisance: It’s costly. One study reports that 85% of workers experience some regular form of conflict, with U.S. workers averaging 2.8 hours per week. That equates to $359 billion paid hours mired in conflict. It’s easy to blame these conflicts on personalities — think toxic bosses or big egos — but in my experience as an organizational consultant, the root cause is more often systemic. For example, this study examining the rivalry between sales and marketing showed that conflicts between managers from these historically warring functions were not driven by interpersonal issues. They were tied to the frequency of how they exchanged information, and the degree to which there were effective processes connecting their work.

France's new anti-catcalling law has prosecuted its first man — Quartz
The first man is fined under France’s new anti-catcalling law September 25, 2018 at 12:05PM https://ift.tt/2NHF1E5

A 30-year-old man in France has become the first to be fined under a new law condemning catcalling.

Extremely drunk when he boarded a bus at rush hour last week, the man slapped a 21-year-old woman on her behind, then proceeded to tell her, “You have big breasts,” according to Le Monde (link in French). She complained to the bus driver, who confronted the man. He then became physical with the bus driver.

At a court in Evry, near Paris, the man was fined €300 ($353) for his comments and jailed for nine months (six of which are suspended) for slapping the woman and attacking the bus driver. France’s minister for gender equality, Marlène Schiappa, was instrumental in getting the outrage sexiste law passed in August, which allows on-the-spot fines of up to €750. The creation of the law was partly fuelled by a viral video of a 22-year-old architecture student being harassed while she walks past a Parisian cafe, only to be punched by the same man seconds later.

Schiappa, 35, recalled her first instance of catcalling when she was 14 in Paris and a man said something obscene to her. She rushed home to her parents. “They just told me, ‘Oh, that’s normal. It’s always like that,’” Schiappa told Time magazine. “I thought it was my fault and it was up to me to have a strategy to deal with it: which clothes to wear, which paths to take. I was resigned to it.”

The law is the cornerstone of a pushback by the millennial politician against the attitudes of past generations. “We’re lowering society’s threshold of tolerance,” Schiappa told the magazine. “We’ll no longer tolerate threats directed at women.” The minister was quick to hail the first use of the law in the courts:

1ère condamnation pour outrage sexiste !
Bravo pour la réactivité du chauffeur de bus et mise en œuvre de la sanction. Ensemble mettons fin aux violences sexistes et sexuelles.#nerienlaisserpasser #loischiappa @NBelloubet @gerardcollomb @ALouisDeputee13 @LaetitiaAvia https://t.co/3DzKEcxoV1

UNGA: Donald Trump missed his UN speaking slot — Quartz
Donald Trump was late for his UN speaking spot and Ecuador’s president is in his place September 25, 2018 at 10:47AM https://ift.tt/2xRELaq

US president Donald Trump was late for the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, missing his speaking spot. Ecuador’s president Lenín Moreno Garcés taking his place.

Trump was seen at the UN headquarters on Reuters’ live feed around 10:15am—seven minutes after he was due to begin speaking. The White House press pool emailed at 10:08am that it was on the way to the UN in a presidential motorcade from Trump Tower, but that it had had no sighting of Trump.

Vice president Mike Pence, secretary of state Mike Pompeo, and press secretary Sarah Sanders walked into the General Assembly hall around 10:28am. Attendees immediately started murmuring under their breaths, disrupting Moreno Garcés’ speech.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on why Trump was late.

As the host nation, the US president always speaks second and the UN calendar planned for Trump to take that slot as usual. Trump tweeted an hour earlier that he planned to speak.

Will be speaking at the United Nations this morning. Our country is much stronger and much richer than it was when I took office less than two years ago. We are also MUCH safer!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 25, 2018

Ecuador’s Moreno Garcés used his slot to rail at the US blockade of Cuba and global powers’ spending on weapons. Trump took the podium afterwards, more than half an hour after he was slated to speak.

Video: God can favour you in difficult times – Mahama preaches September 25, 2018 at 09:55AM https://ift.tt/2OPNQrP

Former president John Mahama has said Ghanaians need to be thankful for the situation they find themselves because God is preparing them for something better.

Speaking at the Ringway Assemblies of God Church on Sunday, he said even in the midst of hardship, like the country’s current economy which is facing harsh criticisms with a lot of people saying things are hard it is not going well, “if you seek the favour of god you will reap 100 holds.”

According to him, “God can select you for favour that is if you seek his favour and if you do the things that please him.”

He cited many examples from the Bible about people who were blessed, even in the face of famine and drought.

On Monday, the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo admitted that the economy is going through some trying times.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Community in New York, USA, Mr Akufo-Addo attributed the difficulties in the system to the “dramatic increase in crude oil prices” and the strengthening of the US dollar.

President Akufo-Addo admits that has led to “a significant and rapid depreciation of the cedi” but was quick to add that the Bank of Ghana is fighting the depreciation.

He, however, dismissed concerns that these difficulties amount to a crisis; assuring that government is on top of the situation.

Apple MacOS Mojave can clean up your messy desktop in just one second - Business Insider
Apple's new Mac software cleaned up years of messy files that accumulated on my desktop in less than a second (AAPL) September 25, 2018 at 09:19AM https://ift.tt/2N0gsgb

Apple on Monday released MacOS Mojave, its latest free software update for Mac computers.

One of the best features introduced in MacOS Mojave is called Stacks, which automatically organizes all of your files into neat piles, grouped in the way you like.

Stacks cleaned up years of messy files in less than a second, with a click of a button.

The first then I did when I downloaded MacOS Mojave, the free new software update for Mac computers that went live on Monday, was use a new feature called Stacks.

Stacks takes the brainwork out of a repetitive and annoying task — keeping your files organized — by doing the heavy lifting on your behalf.  With a click of a button, MacOS Mojave can clean up your entire desktop, and organize all of your errant files into neat little stacks.

It's dead simple to use. You just go to your Finder, click View, and then click Use Stacks.

Here it is in action:

You can even organize your Stacks the way you want: based on file type, or when you last added it, or tags you create yourself.

Stacks was able to do in just seconds what I haven't been able to do in years of owning Mac computers. I love organization, but it's hard to keep all of my desktop files tidy since I'm continually adding to the pile every single day — I take a lot of screengrabs as part of my job, and when I'm collecting dozens of photos from videos and live events, the last thing I'm thinking is which folder I'm going to put them in later. Even when I do take time to organize my desktop, it just gets messy again a few days later.

Stacks is a simple and elegant solution to a problem that's more annoying than you'd think, and it's a great reason, by itself, to download MacOS Mojave.

How to Help a Colleague Who Seems Off Their Game
How to Help a Colleague Who Seems Off Their Game September 25, 2018 at 09:05AM https://ift.tt/2xD9B7I

joshlaverty/Getty Images

When we think about productivity at work, we often think about how to motivate ourselves — or the people on our team. But sometimes the people who are struggling to stay focused and engaged are our peers. And while it may not be an official part of your job description, helping a colleague is the kind thing to do and can be beneficial to your own productivity.

Here are several things you can do for your colleagues to help them through a rough patch.

Acknowledge

The first step is to let your colleague know that you’ve noticed they’re off their game. Find a time to chat with them at their desk or invite them to grab a cup of coffee or a drink after work. Tell them what you’ve observed. Perhaps they look down, or frustrated, or unable to concentrate.

You can’t force a colleague to disclose what’s going on with them, but just letting them know that you’ve noticed that they seem to be acting differently shows them that someone out there is paying attention. They may not want to discuss the issue when you first bring it up, but you’ve planted the seed for future conversation by letting them know that you are there.

And sometimes that’s enough. In an era of hot-desking, flexible schedules, texts, and emails, it is easy to lose the human connection at work, which can make you feel as though you are working for an unsympathetic and faceless organization. Knowing that you have colleagues who care can sometimes be motivating in itself.

Validate

Beyond just stating that you’ve observed that your colleague is struggling, you can also help to validate the difficulty of being productive. One of the big motivation killers for many people involves a combination of imposter syndrome and social comparison.

Imposter syndrome is a common feeling where people believe they’ve risen to a position they don’t deserve. They fear that their colleagues and supervisors will discover that they don’t deserve the position they’ve gotten, so they do their best to hide their bad days and the limitations of their knowledge.

National Voter Registration Day: US voting habits are terrible — Quartz
Americans! Your voting habits are terrible, so register to vote September 25, 2018 at 09:00AM https://ift.tt/2QWbxQw

It’s National Voter Registration Day in the United States. Consider registering!

Federal elections are coming up on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. In a few states, you need to be registered to vote 30 days out from the election. That’s next weekend, so check these deadlines now.

In the US, presidential election participation is pretty high: Over 6 in 10 eligible Americans voted in the last three quadrennial elections.

The problem is midterm elections like this year—when Americans pick just their lawmakers, only four in ten voters make their voices heard.

This is not a very impressive return; half of the time, control of US congress is decided by a minority of voters.

If you compare the US to voter participation in wealthy countries that do not have a compulsory voting laws, you’ll find that Americans are terrible at voting compared to the Scandinavians, and indeed most other countries:

Who to blame? Traditionally, young people, who appear to have way better things to do than vote. Consider recent evidence:

Youth of America, you are needed in the voting booths. Particularly in Minnesota, according to researchers at Tufts University who track youth voting and found that young people could have a major impact on the state’s senate election and three contest House seats.

Speaking of states, here is every state that comes in below the US average in voter turnout. We’re looking at you, Hawaii.

Collins Dauda wanted by police - MyJoyOnline.com
Collins Dauda wanted by police September 25, 2018 at 08:37AM https://ift.tt/2NHCWbe

The Minority in Parliament are angered by the warrant for Collins Dauda's arrest.

Some police officers have stormed the residence of Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Alhaji Collins Dauda to arrest him, Adomonline.com has reported.

The incident happened Tuesday dawn at his home in the constituency where the police claim they had orders from above.

Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka confirmed this to Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.

He said Collins Dauda was not home when the incident occurred but his family members were left traumatised.

The Minority Chip Whip has accused the government of intimidation and has vowed to resist any further threats.

Meanwhile, the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command has asked Collins Dauda to report at the office of the IGP when he arrives in Accra.

It is not clear yet why the former Minister has been invited by the police.

But Mubarak Muntaka said the Asutifi South MP will not report to the police since he has not been charged for any crime.

Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Joseph Opoku Gakpo says Alhaji Collins Dauda, a former Local Government Minister under the John Mahama administration, has confirmed being invited by the IGP.

He said the Minority were locked in a meeting as at Midday, delaying seating for today.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu is expected to brief the media later in the day on the development, Gakpo reported.

Cities could save the bees. They're healthier than farm bees. — Quartz
Urban bees are living healthier lives than rural bees September 25, 2018 at 08:18AM https://ift.tt/2O7r4yw

Bumblebees are making it in the city.

Research published in the Royal Society B found that bumblebees living in urban areas experience healthier lives than their counterparts in rural habitats. Their colonies are larger, better fed, and less prone to disease. Urban colonies also survive longer than their country cousins.

Researchers raised colonies of wild-caught bumblebees 1 in agricultural and urban environments. Every week, the researchers would count the bee population in each hive three times. This is what they observed.

1

The common European bumblebee Bombus terrestris

The bee colonies experienced population cycles, peaking between three and five weeks and then falling rapidly. Colonies in the city grew larger than those on the farm.

Entomologist have shown that over the last 80 years, changes in farmland have resulted in fewer pollinating insects like bees and wasps flitting about the landscape.

Industrialized practices, reduce the diversity in food sources for bees. Farming across large acreage for a single crop—known as monocropping—ensures a brief window of available resources for bees to gather pollen. That plus the presence of insecticides and pollutants makes bucolic life less of a bee paradise and more a bee wasteland. Chemicals used in farming have been shown slow rates of bee reproduction and increase the prevalence of parasites in colonies.

While the study notes that flowers from public and private gardens offer a varied and consistent diet for bees in urban areas, it suggests fewer pesticides may be why bees thrive in the city.

Nonetheless, the bee species studied adapts well to different environments according to Dr. Sydney Cameron, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She told Quartz that bees of different sizes or length of tongues might have more difficulty adapting to urban environments.

As with humans, cities offer insects opportunities for growth. Whether swarming Times Square, or invading Los Angeles the pollinators stay busy and multiply.

The Dangerous Side Of Biking

By Emily | source:Here Sep 25th, 2018

Biking is one of the most popular activities worldwide. In fact, in some countries like Denmark, it has become the main vehicle for transportation, surpassing cars and even the subway.

Copenhagen folks ride around 2 miles per day, and people use their bikes for pretty much every trip under 4 miles.
Worldwide, biking trends are on the rise. In the US, bike trips rose from around 2 billion in 2000 to around 4 billion in 2009.

Among people in the US, men are more likely to ride a bike than women. This isn’t the case in northern Europe, where pretty much everyone bikes.

In the US, women claim they’re concerned by their safety and that keeps them from riding more often. Women with children drive around 20% more than men, probably hauling their kids to a myriad of activities: this makes it more difficult to ride a bike. In Denmark, they have those long family bikes, but they’re still a rare occurrence in the US.
Women’s concerns about bike safety are well founded: in 2009 bicyclists deaths represented around 2% of all traffic fatalities.

Legislation changes have been made in order to protect bikers around the US, making the streets a safer place. If you want to know more, check today’s infographic! It’s all about bike safety. Enjoy the ride!

Born to run, I would spend all day running and surfing if I could. In the meantime I'll just chase dreams.

We are in crisis; MP hits back at Akufo-Addo - MyJoyOnline.com
We are in crisis; MP hits back at Akufo-Addo September 25, 2018 at 07:40AM https://ift.tt/2Q0ZUGT

A legislator on the Minority side has charged President Nana Akufo-Addo to admit the economy of Ghana is in crisis rather than labelling it as a mere difficulty.

Reacting to what President Akufo-Addo told a Ghanaian community in New York, USA Monday, Rockson Dafeamekpor believes the President’s sugar-coated his description of the Ghanaian economy.

“It has moved beyond mere difficulties to a crisis,” the South Dayi constituency representative stated.

The President in his speech, however, attributed the “difficulties” in the system to the “dramatic increase in crude oil prices” and the strengthening of the US dollar.

Related: We’re in difficult times; Akufo-Addo concedes

“We have to approach the foreign exchange matter medium to long-term, by expanding our supply base, that’s not a crisis…they’re difficulties the system would be able to accommodate…” he said.

Reacting to these comments, however, Mr Dafeamekpor said the ‘difficulties’ tag is not accurate. “We are rather in crisis,” he told Kojo Yankson on the AM Show on the Joy News channel Tuesday.

The MP explained the challenges that have met the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) implementation of the free Senior High School policy and the hike in tertiary fees and as well as other sectors including fuel prices, can only be described as a crisis.

However, Sekondi MP, Andrews Agyapa Mercer, who was also on the show noted that President Akufo-Addo should be cut some slack, for admitting the difficulties in the system instead of insisting they amount to a crisis.

Commenting on the banking crisis, Mr Mercer noted that the job losses could have been prevented if the erstwhile John Mahama government had acted fast at the time the banks began facing difficulties, instead of the NPP government having to deal with the situation after assuming power.

He also lauded the government on some macroeconomic figures stating that fiscal deficit, for instance, was reduced to 5.9% of GDP in 2017 from 9.3% in 2016.

Are college safe spaces good or bad for students?
Safe spaces: Where should the line of censorship be drawn? September 25, 2018 at 07:11AM https://ift.tt/2pxdkiA

A team at UMass Amherst recently sequenced the genome of the Canadian lynx.

It's part of a project intending to sequence the genome of every vertebrate in the world.

Conservationists interested in the Canadian lynx have a new tool to work with.

13th-century fantastical depiction of an elephant.

It is easy to see how one can look at 66,000 genomic sequences stored away as being the analogous equivalent of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It is a potential tool for future conservationists.

But what are the practicalities of sequencing the genome of a lynx beyond engaging with broad bioethical questions? As the animal's habitat shrinks and Earth warms, the Canadian lynx is demonstrating less genetic diversity. Cross-breeding with bobcats in some portions of the lynx's habitat also represents a challenge to the lynx's genetic makeup. The two themselves are also linked: warming climates could drive Canadian lynxes to cross-breed with bobcats.

John Organ, chief of the U.S. Geological Survey's Cooperative Fish and Wildlife units, said to MassLive that the results of the sequencing "can help us look at land conservation strategies to help maintain lynx on the landscape."

What does DNA have to do with land conservation strategies? Consider the fact that the food found in a landscape, the toxins found in a landscape, or the exposure to drugs can have an impact on genetic activity. That potential change can be transmitted down the generative line. If you know exactly how a lynx's DNA is impacted by something, then the environment they occupy can be fine-tuned to meet the needs of the lynx and any other creature that happens to inhabit that particular portion of the earth.

Given that the Trump administration is considering withdrawing protection for the Canadian lynx, a move that caught scientists by surprise, it is worth having as much information on hand as possible for those who have an interest in preserving the health of this creature—all the way down to the building blocks of a lynx's life.

Cape Town startup RapidDeploy to move HQ to US after AT&T deal for 911 product – Ventureburn
Cape Town startup RapidDeploy to move HQ to US after AT&T deal for 911 product September 25, 2018 at 07:11AM https://ift.tt/2xAKNxa

Just over a month after announcing a deal with US telecoms giant AT&T to offer its platform to the US’s 911 service, SA startup RapidDeploy is moving its headquarters to the US.
RapidDeploy claims that its cloud-based technology platform, offers emergency first responders relevant and accurate information in real time on a critical situation. This reduces response times dramatically, in scenarios where every second is a matter of life or death.
The platform is already deployed in over 35 agencies around the world, with the solution deployed as far afield as Fiji. To date, the platform has processed tens of thousands of emergency calls.
CEO and co-founder Steven Raucher (pictured above, right) revealed the news [...]
