US charges take shine off Brazil-driven Santander profit
Banco Santander has announced a net fall of four percent in its year-on-year fourth quarter profits. The drop is mainly attributed to a one-off impairment in its American business, where the bank took additional charges of €149 million ($186 million) by increasing its stake in Santander Consumer USA to 69 percent and making provisions for hurricanes. The Spanish giant still managed to post a net profit of €1.54bn for the period, thanks to a robust performance in Latin America. Brazil, the banks largest market in the region, accounted for more than a quarter of the group's earnings, and net profit was up 26 percent. "Throughout the year we have seen strong growth in Latin America, with our businesses in Brazil and Mexico performing exceptionally well", Ana Botin, Santander's executive chairman said in a statement.
