Germany's chess village hopes heritage listing proves 'leap of joy' move | World news | The Guardian
"If, in spite of the home advantage, a Ströbeck player was about to walk into a trap set by the visiting opponent, members of the audience were allowed to shout out the warning “Vadder, mit Rat!” meaning “Father, be careful” in the local dialect."

Monopoly Killer: Perfect German Board Game Redefines Genre
It's Settlers. "To make Monopoly more competitive with German-style games, new editions are reemphasizing an old rule that no one paid much attention to: If a player lands on a property and chooses not to buy it, that real estate immediately goes up for auction."

Wings Of Desire (1987)
A strong and loosely-painted mythology of benevolently bored immortals pacing around Berlin before the wall fell, taking notes. But the good, mundane dialogue gets drowned out by bad, self-conscious poetry, and the love interest is mystifyingly shallow.

I Was A Male War Bride (1949)
An increasingly emasculated Cary Grant is pushed through a comparatively rational screwball comedy, with a self-aware script deflating its own farce and speeding matter-of-factly through the leads' relationship.

The Lives of Others (2006)
The counteraction of human weak points in the omniscient surveillance system of the GDR. Slow, strong character development; occasionally heavy-handed, but most of it perfectly underplayed.

Good Bye Lenin! (2002)
The value and cost of selfish, idealised delusions; the timeline and scenery of the film feeling a bit like one itself. Great snapshots of a society in quiet, half-mourned collapse, a lot of good dereliction, and the premise never overplays itself.

"Pausing long enough to pose for photographs, the Robin Hood gang then vanished into the warren of houses and stepped gardens overlooking Hamburg's picturesque Elbe River. [...] The raid [appeared] to be inspired by the hit German film The Edukators."

German furniture-shuffling activists discover their position in the scheme of things. Neatly constructed, but a couple more Edukations would have been nice.
