What's Actually Wrong with Yahoo's Purchase of Summly
An old post about Y!'s acquisition of Summly, an iPhone app which uses NLP to summarise news stories. This is an excellent point about modern tech startups:
[Summly] licensed the core engine from another company. They are the quintessential bolt-on engineers, taking a Japanese bike engine, slapping together a badly constructed frame aligned solely by eyeballs, and laying down a marketing blitz. That's why the story sells. "You, too, can do it." But do you want to? [...] it's critical to keep tabs on the ratio known as "glue versus thought." Sure, both imply progress and both are necessary. But the former is eminently mundane, replaceable, and outsource-able. The latter is typically what gives a company its edge, what is generally regarded as a competitive advantage. So, what is Yahoo signaling to the world? "We value glue more than thought."

Introducing Groups.io
Mark "ONEList" Fletcher's back, and he's reinventing the email group! awesome.
email groups (the modern version of mailing lists) have stagnated over the past decade. Yahoo Groups and Google Groups both exude the dank air of benign neglect. Google Groups hasn’t been updated in years, and some of Yahoo’s recent changes have actually made Yahoo Groups worse! And yet, millions of people put up with this uncertainty and neglect, because email groups are still one of the best ways to communicate with groups of people. And I have a plan to make them even better.
So today I’m launching Groups.io in beta, to bring email groups into the 21st Century. At launch, we have many features that those other services don’t have, including:

Integration with other services, including: Github, Google Hangouts, Dropbox, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and the ability to import Feeds into your groups.
Businesses and organizations can have their own private groups on their own subdomain.
Better archive organization, using hashtags.
Many more email delivery options.
The ability to mute threads or hashtags.
Fully searchable archives, including searching within attachments.

One other feature that Groups.io has that Yahoo and Google don’t, is a business model that’s not based on showing ads to you. Public groups are completely free on Groups.io. Private groups and organizations are very reasonably priced.

Theresa May warns Yahoo that its move to Dublin is a security worry
Y! is moving to Dublin to evade GCHQ spying on its users. And what is the UK response?
"There are concerns in the Home Office about how Ripa will apply to Yahoo once it has moved its headquarters to Dublin," said a Whitehall source. "The home secretary asked to see officials from Yahoo because in Dublin they don't have equivalent laws to Ripa. This could particularly affect investigations led by Scotland Yard and the national crime agency. They regard this as a very serious issue."

Yahoo! moving EMEA operations to Dublin
Like many companies, the structure of Yahoo's business is driven by the needs of the business. There are a number of factors which influence decisions about the locations in which the business operates. To encourage more collaboration and innovation, we’re increasing our headcount in Dublin, thus continuing to bring more Yahoos together in fewer locations. Dublin is already the European home to many of the world’s leading global technology brands and has been a home for Yahoo for over a decade already.

SAMOA, an open source platform for mining big data streams
Yahoo!'s streaming machine learning platform, built on Storm, implementing:

As a library, SAMOA contains state-of-the-art implementations of algorithms for distributed machine learning on streams. The first alpha release allows classification and clustering. For classification, we implemented a Vertical Hoeffding Tree (VHT), a distributed streaming version of decision trees tailored for sparse data (e.g., text). For clustering, we included a distributed algorithm based on CluStream. The library also includes meta-algorithms such as bagging.

the real reason Marissa Mayer canned remote Y! employees (apparently)
After spending months frustrated at how empty Yahoo parking lots were, Mayer consulted Yahoo's VPN logs to see if remote employees were checking in enough. Mayer discovered they were not — and her decision was made.

we're hearing from people close to Yahoo executives and employees that she made the right decision banning work from home. "The employees at Yahoo are thrilled," says one source close to the company. "There isn't massive uprising. The truth is, they've all been pissed off that people haven't been working."

Storm and Hadoop: Convergence of Big-Data and Low-Latency Processing
Yahoo! are going big with Storm for their next-generation internal cloud platform:

'Yahoo! engineering teams are developing technologies to enable Storm applications and Hadoop applications to be hosted on a single cluster.

• We have enhanced Storm to support Hadoop style security mechanism (including Kerberos authentication), and thus enable Storm applications authorized to access Hadoop datasets on HDFS and HBase.
• Storm is being integrated into Hadoop YARN for resource management. Storm-on-YARN enables Storm applications to utilize the computation resources in our tens of thousands of Hadoop computation nodes. YARN is used to launch Storm application master (Nimbus) on demand, and enables Nimbus to request resources for Storm application slaves (Supervisors).'
