SQS performance and latency
Some decent benchmark data on SQS:
We were looking at four values in the tests:
total number of messages sent per second (by all nodes)
total number of messages received per second
95th percentile of message send latency (how fast a message send call completes)
95th percentile of message processing latency (how long it takes between sending and receiving a message)

great, I've looked for this so many times. Only tricky limit I can spot is the 300 tps limit, and it's US-East/US-West only for now

ECS, Docker, ELB, SQS, SNS, RDS, VPC, and spot instances. Pretty canonical setup these days...
The mytaxi app is also now able to predict daily and weekly spikes. In addition, it has gained the elasticity required to meet demand during special events. Herzberg describes a typical situation on New Year's Eve: “Shortly before midnight everyone needs a taxi to get to parties, and after midnight people want to go home. In past years we couldn't keep up with the demand this generated, which was around three and a half times as high as normal. In November 2015 we moved our Docker container architecture to Amazon ECS, and for the first time ever in December we were able to celebrate a new year in which our system could handle the huge number of requests without any crashes or interruptions—an accomplishment that we were extremely proud of. We had faced the biggest night on the calendar without any downtime.”

Evolution of Babbel’s data pipeline on AWS: from SQS to Kinesis
Good "here's how we found it" blog post:

Our new data pipeline with Kinesis in place allows us to plug new consumers without causing any damage to the current system, so it’s possible to rewrite all Queue Workers one by one and replace them with Kinesis Workers. In general, the transition to Kinesis was smooth and there were not so tricky parts.
Another outcome was significantly reduced costs – handling almost the same amount of data as SQS, Kinesis appeared to be many times cheaper than SQS.

Comparing Message Queue Architectures on AWS
A good overview -- I like the summary table. tl;dr:
If you are light on DevOps and not latency sensitive use SQS for job management and Kinesis for event stream processing. If latency is an issue, use ELB or 2 RabbitMQs (or 2 beanstalkds) for job management and Redis for event stream processing.

All Data Are Belong to AWS: Streaming upload via Fluentd
Fluentd looks like a decent foundation for tailing/streaming event processing in Ruby, supporting batched output to S3 and a bunch of other AWS services, Kafka, and RabbitMQ for output. Claims to have ok performance, despite its Rubbitude. However, its high-availability story is shite, so not to be used where availability is important
