Very interesting post on federation vs centralization for new services:
One of the controversial things we did with Signal early on was to build it as an unfederated service. Nothing about any of the protocols we've developed requires centralization; it's entirely possible to build a federated Signal Protocol based messenger, but I no longer believe that it is possible to build a competitive federated messenger at all.

How We Moved Our API From Ruby to Go and Saved Our Sanity
Parse on their ditching-Rails story. I haven't heard a nice thing about Ruby or Rails as an operational, production-quality platform in a long time :(

Platform Game
I'm ambivalent about Microsoft acquiring Mojang. Will they Embrace and Extend Minecraft as they've done with other categories? Let's hope not. On the other hand, some adult supervision and a Plugin API would be welcome. Mojang have the financial resources but lack the will and focus needed to publish and support a Plugin API. Perhaps Mojang themselves don't realise just how important their little game has become.
